Canada has the highest numbers of professionals doing menial jobs, and it's very very expensive and lonely place. In my view, I don't know any western country that is as lonely and boring as Canada. Its just crush your soul. A country that is 10x bigger than Nigeria but has less the population of Kano and Lagos, will be lonely and expensive since its sparsely populated.

I'm not saying Canada is bad, but if you compare it with places like Australia or Germany, then it should take the back seat. Oh and its too cold, like freezing cold. Who wants that? I know many people that left Canada back to Europe, but I know only few people that left Europe to Canada.

Of course if someone is coming from places like Nigeria, Canada is better, but compare to other Europeans countries, Canada is a joke. You guys are suffering there lol
Dude, I hardly compare countries because I believe everyone's destiny is different. If I tell you the number of people I know in Germany that wants to leave. lOOOL. What of language barrier.

See, no country is easy. Just choose your hard.

Bye.

If you finally decide to travel, then remove the UK, and to some extent, Canada from that list (or make it your last option). The rest are good, but the suffering you will face before you reach the promised land in places like Canada and UK, you might have been old then.
I don't really know about life in Australia but saying Canada should be last on a list that includes Germany & New Zealand is funny. If you have the right skill sets, you can easily hit the ground running in Canada. @OP, I'd suggest you stay back in Nigeria with your earnings but is life only about money? It's left to you to answer. I live in Canada.

Peace!

If I were you, I'll start with the question: do you want to educate yourself or do you just want a job?
If all you want is a job, then you may not need a masters. It may take a while, but you'll get a job. You just need to be persistent. You could start firstly with networking on LinkedIn, so that you are more visible to recruiters when they search. Then you may want to focus on certifications like the CBAP, if business analytics is more what you are interested in. Then go hard with looking for a job by submitting hundreds of applications. There are a lot of openings for business analytics and even more on data analyst roles. It may take a while, but you will eventually get a job, provided you get those certifications and you are good at data analysis. You could also search for preliminary certifications issued by Microsoft and IBM, etc. in data analysis. These will bolster your applications and may help you secure a job.

I say this because you shouldn't expect to find studying in Canada easy. It is often much more difficult than Nigerian students anticipate. Most Nigerian students are not equipped well enough in Nigeria to study abroad. It can often get very frustrating and tedious. You have to be sure you want to do this, so that when you finish you don't feel like it was a waste of time and effort.

If you are convinced and you really want to educate yourself, then you could consider going back to school. Starting with a certificate could be a good thing and you could put that on your CV while applying for a masters degree. Many of the universities offer these kinds of co-op or certificate programs which you can apply for and easily get into. These are however not as difficult as the masters program. It may be easier to get into a business analytics masters than it is to get into a data science masters. The latter is more competitive. You may also just consider masters in computer science or statistics which cover pretty much the same syllabus, though on a more fundamental level. If you have PR, it won't be a waste of money as you'll be paying a fraction of international student cost. And in some schools like University of Calgary, I think, getting the diploma in data science may improve your chances of getting admitted into their masters program. There are a few schools like that.

Now, you may also want to keep in mind that while having a masters degree may improve your chances of getting a job, it doesn't automatically guarantee you a job. In fact, you may be surprised that some of your friends who don't do the masters end up with good or better jobs. You just have to ask yourself why you are taking the masters in the first place.

One thing the masters may fetch you is more interviews. But you still need to be very good at data analysis tools e.g. SQL, because the interviews will test you on this.
Nothing to add.

Romance › Re: Married People: What Advice Do You Have For Singles? by damzy88: 10:40pm On May 03, 2022
Shokoloko:
Know why you decided to get married in the first place:

1. Do not marry a man/woman that Is lower your league. Forget I will brush him/her up. I will open a business for him, I will send her to school. Only a small percentage of those relationships are successful

2. Do not marry a man /woman that you are not attracted to. Do not say love will grow. 95% of the time it doesn't. People just resign themselves to fate. If during the date of courtship you do not always feel like (I said feel like, not actually jumping them) jumping your fiance/fiancee backout.

3. Do not marry a foreigner except you have decided that you end your days in a foreign land. If you want to retire in Nigeria do not try this. The spouse and your kids will not come back with you. You will die here alone

4. Do not marry a man/woman that Is disrespectful to househelps, artisans, and less-privileged

5.Do not marry a person whose mother or elder sisters do not like you. That person is a sibling first before a spouse. Na you go tire.

6. Discuss how many children you will have before marriage. Some people will be impregnated until they die and the other spouse is free to remarry their actual choice who will only have 1 or 2 kids.

7. Do not do a total joint account. You are a team and not Siamese twins

8.Set your boundaries. Boundaries determine the level of respect you get in marriage. Do not pretend. If you do not like cooking, say that you do not like cooking but you are willing to do it from time to time. If you do not like to wash say it. If you smoke weed, say it. If you have a child somewhere, say it. If you plan to not let your spouse work, say it. Do not disclose body count

9. Do not try to change your partner. Work with what you see or leave.

10.If you have a misunderstanding, do not decide not to talk about it. Even if you bury it , it will surface 10 years later. Talk about it every night until its sorted out

11. Men, Pregnancy and childbirth stress a woman. Be kind.

12.Find out your spouse's love language. There are five love languages. If you are not loving your spouse in the love language he or she understands. You have done nothing. The love languages are words of affirmation, physical touch, gifts, acts of service and quality time.
Because my spouse associated gifts with love, I had to learn to give expensive gifts to him. My spouse bought me a very good SUV before we married, but it didn't mean as much as the two of us in the kitchen: I am washing plates and he is rinsing or we are cleaning the plugs of our generators together. That, to me is more than a car. So find out your spouse's love language

Check your love language here https://www.5lovelanguages.com/quizzes/

12.Pray, Pray, Pray. There are forces specifically out to destroy marriages

13.God hates divorce, but he prefers you alive and divorced than dead because of domestic violence. You can leave

14. Forget that talk about not bringing in a third party. I and my spouse could not see eye to eye about an issue for 9 years until we brought in a third party
I love your number 3. I'm in a foreign land and I have always had this opinion. smiley

Many thanks for all your contributions. I am more inclined to stay back in Nigeria and I will. Starting life all over again in a new country is a turn off for me. For my profession I'll need to spend a year or two writing exams in any new country to get certified in that country before I will be able to get similar job and roles unless I want to switch careers. My job in Nigeria is secured. The Company is over 50 years old and even though it started as a one man business it's no longer so. After becoming a director within 3 to 5 years you become a shareholder. Shares are allotted to you as part of your employment benefits and the shares are often enough to make you part of the decision makers. I feel I have better prospects staying here and building my career than relocating to a new country and starting all over again.
If all you listed above is true, I'll suggest you stay back in Nigeria. You can always send your kids and wife to Canada.

I live in Canada and I know what I'm saying.

Peace!

I sometimes read threads like this, especially with regards to “Japa”, and I weep in my heart.

A nation where 80% of the most active and productive age group feels the only way they can succeed or prosper is by leaving the country is really pitiable and sad. The narrative has pervaded the whole atmosphere, that you see even someone that is moderately well off in Nigeria jumping or abandoning ship to face an unknown fate.

I don’t blame anyone, especially those with such notions, a force propelled that…but is very sad

Investment › Re: What's The Best Way To Invest Idle Funds? by damzy88: 2:57pm On Mar 22, 2022
perambulator:
Fixed deposit in Nigeria is a waste of time if you really understand money. Why? The amount of interest may sound high but it is high for a reason…..inflation in Nigeria is high. If you take a course in finance, one of the 1st things you will learn is that you have to look at your returns relative to inflation. So if you have a return of 15% but inflation of 20%, you are actually losing wealth even though on paper you have more “money”. Before you invest you need to understand some concepts like inflation, relative return, and the difference between wealth and money! The fact that you have more money than you started with does not mean you are wealthier!!!! 1 billion Naira may sound like a lot but it does not make you a rich man because it cannot buy much in Nigeria!!!! You buy a decent land in ikoyi as a “rich man” and you will find you will struggle to build a decent house with what is left, then you will know billion in Naira is nothing!!

Let’s say a piece of land costs 10m and a car costs 10m but you decide to put 10m in the bank and get 30% pa interest. If after a year you collect your 13m and are feeling richer until you realize that car is now 15m and the land is 16m, you’ve actually damaged your wealth by putting your money in fixed deposit despite on paper having more money. A good investment you should be able to buy more that what you could before you invested.

Long and short if you put your money in a fixed deposit, when you get your money back with your big interest can you buy the same items you could buy if not you have actually lost wealth and you are poorer despite having more “money”. So a good investment is either one that protects your wealth or increases your wealth. That is the question you need to answer. You investment needs to at the very least protect you from inflation but also grow your wealth.

I hope that helps!
I like your ideas. Do you have specific examples of the kind of investment one should look into?

Brother. Just follow your heart.

If you are sure of your employers in the UK, you can move. £4000 is just fair enough. Just keep off London.

But, in the long run, if you have a plan to not work under a firm forever and actually build something for yourself, I won't advise you go... Nigeria is your best bet in that case. 1.5 million is something more substantial here. But it'll depend on your plans and dreams.

Also know that most of these japa brouhaha are emotionally fueled. Most of those fueling it have never been outside this country before. They don't know what's up.

Going can be good. Staying also owes some good potential... If you pray, pray about this...
I agree with the fact that the "japa brouhaha are emotionally fueled".

Davidoff2000:
I nearly ran mad when I came back for reasons I don't care to mention here now. It took me two years before I got a job and started getting back on my feet. Now, I am happier here than there.

Now lemme tell you about America.

America is good, depending on your level and state before you got there. If you were jobless, doing POS or selling rat poison in traffic, getting to America will seem like heaven for you and you cant stop thanking God you got there. If you were doing good, living the good life in Nigeria, and then relocated to America, America is only a slight upgrade. There is nothing an American can enjoy there, you wont enjoy here (with your money ofcourse).

If you were using iphone11 and you got bumped to iphone13, will you go thanking God and be freaked that you are now using iphone13? No. But if you were using techno or itel and then got gifted 1phone 13, its a whole new game altogether.

That's how it is-so it depends on your status on Nigeria really and then how you got there- your path to citizenship. If you go as a student on full tuition, you are good. If a spouse or parent won a green card and you go and you don't even have an idea how rent is paid, you are good too. You don't worry about insurance, taxes, etc etc. Someone has already made the sacrifice for you.

But if you go on a visa, overstay and hope to make good? You are on a long thing, and your experience will be one of stress and near bitterness. Your path to citizenship determines everything.

In America, someone must have made the sacrifice for you, for you to come and start enjoying the good life. If you are the one to make the sacrifice? Only your children will enjoy o, not you- you are the pathfinder, the sacrificial lamb- you won't enjoy your life- others would.

Las las..if you are earning good in Nigeria, you have a better life balance- money, family, social network, sense of community etc.

There, its a lonely society out there, so cold it can make you miserable in old age due to loneliness.

My two kobo
You have a point.

while your are running away from Nigeria - somewhere in Lebanon, some men are thinking and praying hard to find themselves in Nigeria - even without $1 in their pocket, they believe they will make it big within 5 years and become millionaires because of Nigeria’s almost non existent taxes, huge market to sell anything sellable, loop holes everywhere that they can exploit that western organized societies can’t tolerate - and u want to waste that money venturing into the unknown and 10 years later - you still don’t have papers to travel to your land of birth Nigeria. and even when u have the papers, you can’t afford the air ticket and even if u can afford the air ticket - you get to Nigeria and discover most guys who didn’t travel when u did now have houses, cars, now married to the women they love or at least chose for themselves and by themselves with children and u will look lost because u don’t have a house of your own, probably u don’t have a wife and kids and it is now u are trying to hurriedly look for a “wait and take” wife which some family member organized for u as a rescue plan - and you are not even sure her feelings towards you is genuine because probably she too wants to escape Nigeria and she sees you as a means of doing just that!

brother - if i were you, i will go get a chilled bottle of beer and relax - the grass is always greener on the other side - put on your thinking cap and think critically - keep that 2.5 million in the bank so you don’t make stupid decisions in a haste - spend the next 2 weeks researching what u can be selling that people must buy in your area and start doing that with N500k - only

when u start making profits then introduce another 500k into it, be prudent with your money and watch ur life take off for good

if in future u want to travel and live abroad u will not go like a fugitive - but with dignity and on your own terms.

be wise!!!!

Remind me of my first winter in Canada during my grad studies days. I was staying in a basement apartment with a white couple staying above. I just woke up one morning and realized that I couldn't open the door out of the apartment, which had a backdoor to the exterior with a small stair case in the open air. Problem was that a lot of snow had fall overnight in that area and there was no way the door could be pushed out. I had to shout loud for my neighbor to come dig me out of the snow. Snow shoveling is an exercise I did for good 9 years. It wasn't fun at all.. Once you live in a house with driveway or walk way, you got no choice. Imagine, you already shoveled the snow in front of your house and later a snow ploughing truck clearing the road pushed another pile to your driveway and walkway. By law, in certain provinces, you must clear the snow on the public walkway in front of your house.
