NO, I don't think banks should run shifts because it's not realistic and it's unprofitable.
Texmex mentioned aligning with developments in the global economy- I hardly think staying awake through the night is the remedy to that. That the US starts a new day as we close in Nigeria is a geographical phenomenon that cannot be helped. If we pretend to be awake when North America is awake, how do we handle eastern coutries like China and Japan that are in different time zones as well?

These other economies are basically cashless based; they use credit cards and other e-channels that we have refused to embrace here.
Cheques can and will be given same day value ONLY through technological input like what automated clearing,NIBSS and interswitch are offering, and not more man-hours as u suggest.

Assume banks run shifts, who amongst us would honestly like to be found in a bank discussing credit lines for his new business or LPO financing in the dead of night? Back-end and end-of-day processing already takes place in the late evening to early night, and IT handles that. They run shifts and I guess that just about makes sense.

If we have ATMs that actually run 24/7 with less service downtime; POS terminals and vending machines at Petrol stations, Malls, Hotels even schools etc where we can make payments WITHOUT cash and obtain a receipt, what do I need a bank for? To go there and get delayed and leave with a sour taste in my mouth for dismal customer service??

Use a cheque-book for third party transactions. Get internet banking to make transfers to ANY bank in Nigeria. Obtain a mastercard to purchase and transact globally. Use a debitcard for daily cash withdrawals and to top-up.

They were supposed to keep tabs on their investments, monitor how well "their" bank is doing as a growing concern, instead they're looking for who to blame for their stupid decisions of not cashing in on time, or calling the board to order.

@papabrowne- I beg to disagree that banks are scared to give out loans now, or that entrepreneurs are scared to access these facilities. There are businesses that need periodic injections of cashflow, mainly from banks, to thrive. Such businesses are legit, are growing/going concerns and are indeed profitable.
All that is needed is due process, proper documentation, the applications must meet the minimum requirements of regulatory bodies and indeed the financial institution involved.
As a matter of fact, these banks failed not directly as a result of the MDs/CEOs, but as a result of lapses from internal control and level management. These are internal police, where were they when credits with weak credentials were being appproved?

The police has to step up its recruitment requirements and has to be a place of choice NOT desperation!
Basic requirement now is primary school leaving cert I think for rank and file, and even at that, some candidates can barely speak the english.
Then they have to be careful who they select for firearms training and handling. If you give a slowpoke a gun, you make him a dangerous slowpoke

Back to Bond and Daniel craig: Most people just know Bond from the movies, not the one in the novels by Ian Fleming.
The real Bond was a toughie, and is even scarred in the book, YES, he has a scar!
This is a lad that was thrown out of classy boarding schools for incessant roguish behaviour, and is described more as SUAVE than HANDSOME.

Albert Brocolli had to sell the movie franchise somehow and several changes were introduced to Bond's character. I had almost the whole library growing up and I'd like to rebuild that library cos it's some of the best espionage fiction you'll ever get.
The Bond in the novels felt pain, shed tears, despaired and was rescued from death more than once (Read you only Live twice, infact he suffered ED in that Book lol, a whole Bond!)
My advice, if you can, read the books, then re-watch the movies. You'd see that the closest thing to the Original Bond created by Fleming is in this order-

Sean Connery (Still too handsome, but very rugged!)
Daniel Craig (He's THE Bond in the books, believe it!)
George Lazenby (The forgotten Bond from OHMSS, pure action that one)
Pierce Brosnan (Just follows the script)

The irony is I actually Like Roger Moore the best, despite his lack of credentials to the true Bond persona.
All the rest just plain suck if you ask me(Timothy Dalton for God's sake? They might as well have hired Terry Wogan instead)
