Fulaman198:

I'm in accordance with what you say. Gaelic was once the main language in Ireland but that's besides the point. Herein lies the problem.

Most Africans know more about European and Western history than they do about African history. Most Africans care more about European things than African things. It seems that the true dominant world culture is European culture. Everyone talks about it. You don't see people discussing African culture to the same level at all. That's why there needs to be steps to culturally preserve ancient customs and to be very culturally aware.

I get you. I was actually appalled when last year, on a thread on nairaland, I learned that the government had decided to scrap history as a subject in schools. Before then I always felt history was not prominent enough in our curriculum. I learned the real stuff of the Nigerian civil war from Chimamanda ' s half of a yellow sun. Before then my erroneous belief about d war was as follows:

'the easterners decided to secede because oil was discovered in their region. They were greedy. There was a war, a few died. '

I was so ignorant, I was embarrassed to learn about my ignorance . That was when I started to wonder why all the schools I attended never offered history. I think history should b Compulsory in primary and secondary schools.

Recently I read about the Oyo empire when someone created an elaborate thread about it. It was a shock to learn that I come from such a great place with great history. Of course I knew a lot about the British, Greek, Egyptian and Roman empires but very little about my own Oyo. It is such a shame . We need to teach history as a compulsory subject.

We need to the proactive steps. Our museums are practically dead.

And another problem seems to be that we hardly 'export' our art to d world. If not for movies who would know that in India it is women who pay dowry. But I think it's easier for them sha because they retained their language as lingua franca unlike us.

NickiRoman: ...What do you mean by "A lot of Nigerians here would want you to put your signature in English"? Do you mean A lot of Nigerians care about your signature

Your world really does evolve around Nairaland grin,

Lol. I thought I was the only one that sneered at that statement.

All this culture issue sef ehn e get as e be o. What you guys should realise is that there are over fifty countries in Africa , thousands of languages and distinct cultures (although we could argue thatI there are some similarities)

And the so called oyibos that we jumble up together and regard as Western culture, they once had distinct cultural practices. But with continued interaction over long periods they absorbed from one another and became really similar.

I am pan African. I love Nigeria. I speak my native language very very well. I speak English very very well. However I read and write English much better than my native language.

English is our lingua franca. That is the major thing that has led to us absorbing the so called western culture. Once a language becomes dominant in a place the battle for cultural supremacy is half won. The dominant language you speak determines the books you read, the movies you watch, the online sites you visit etc. We all know that the info we consume affects how we see things. So over time the things we read about (practices, dressing, etc) look to us as the 'normal and acceptable'.

We can certainly take steps to preserve aspects of our culture but I don't think we can go back to to pre-colonial cultural Africa.

A lot of cultures have had to deal with this. A lot of people don't even know that there are local languages in places like Ireland till this day .

Why would someone decide to wait for something to b sent to them when they can simply get it with d click of a button? Because they are not aware of the download link! You should consider things before jumping to conclusions. Pls just direct them. No insults!

Well that one concern people wey dey watch nollywood, not a fan and never will i be. Me thinks she should upgrade. She has the resources, talent, why can't she go into directing? Csami: But she self no get shame, she is suppose to be a director now.

This statement is based on the presupposition that there is a ladder in the movie industry : from costumier to actress and then u graduate to directing. That is wrong. If what u know how to do is act then stick to it. When she tried singing and e no make sense u guys dey yab am. Now u want her to direct so that you can have something to laugh about abi?

So u want her to scamper of to new York film academy like all our nollywood actors, some of whom have zero passion for directing. I don't think Sandra bullock, meryl streep etc have directed any movies. It's thise same nonsense mentality that drives our artistes to run and establish record labels after just one hit track.

Dunno y people just 'pretend' to hate geneveive. You know she is good and when her next film comes out you will still make sure you watch it. Abeg she spoke the truth joor. She cannot b dragging roles with the 'waka pass'. She has paid her dues.

And as for that director that calls her an ingrate, did they pay her for doing nothing? Was her face not selling their movies? It's business. They both benefitted from it. So he should stop making it sound like she was a charity case he took on.
I tire for naija people o. Una no like to dey hear true talk.

Sports / Re: My Analysis On The Super Eagles Team! by DarryOsh(m): 1:43am On Jul 01, 2014
ideyvexnow: How Nigeria Can Win The Fifa World Cup In 2018.

It is no longer news that Nigeria have just been eliminated from the ongoing 2014 Fifa World cup in Brazil.

This can be attributed to many factors such as poor squad selection, in ability to defend set pieces, lack of creativity in the final third of the

pitch and finally, sub standard/half baked player abilities development (with the exception of Enyeama)

The Real Problem....

It is public knowledge that Nigeria is the most successful country in the world at the Fifa Under 17 World Cup level, but we have not been able

to translate this success to the Super Eagles.

The Reason for this is simply because, at the under 17 level, Nigeria has lots of football academies around the country whose job is to scout for

and train naturally talented and skillful young players who are between JS3 and SS2 level.

These academies help the young footballers to develop their personal abilities like running, jumping, heading, shooting, passing, dribbling, ball

juggling etc.

As a result, Nigeria benefits immensely, by winning lots of Under 17 world cups.

Guys and Girls, what do you think?

This is what I think : u failed to mention the number one reason why we excel at under 17 level. Our so-called under 17 boys are usually grossly over-aged! Don't pretend to miss that fact!

Family / Re: He Wants To Set Up A Room With N250,000 by DarryOsh(m): 1:00pm On Jan 05, 2014
It depends on a number of things:

Are going to furnish the room from scratch or u already have a few things?
Perhaps you have few things from school. Or there are some extra stuffs u can take from home

What is your taste?

What state and area are we talking about. Getting a decent place in a decent area in, for example, Lagos would cost more than say Oyo.

How financially bouyant are you?
It makes no sense to furnish ur room beautifully and be unable to afford three decent meals, have some guests over once in a while and cater for some other basic stuffs. If your parents are not sending you away, no need to rush out only to come back asking for financial help. I understand you want to b a man. Great! But it is very important that you have a steady income that can maintain your lifestyle. Make sure you have a reasonable job. The reason why I hammered on the final poiny is that I imagine that your folks are speaking based on their judgement on the size of your pocket. I belive they wouldn't see the amount too much if they are very sure you can comfortably afford it.

Having said all that, I really don't think 250k is too much an amount to spend on getting a decent room. As long as you can comfortably afford it and you are not smashing your piggy bank to scrape the last coins.

I hope this helps.

That is why african race will continue lagging behind in term of everything. I am not a politician neither a tribalistic person.

Obanikoro Musiliu is a hypocrite and a man without integrity anfd dignity. He was brought up and trained by Tinubu, who happen to be his political Godfather. They were together from day of Alliance for Democracy.

Secondly, fashola is not the only governor in Nigeria using Range Rover bullet proof as official car.

Moreover, our president is spending one million naira for a meal when millions of Nigeria can not boast of five thousand naira as capital

we Nigerian youth should stand and fight out this corrupt old generations so that our generations to come can breath a fresh air
anytime I see the highlighted, I cringe. The most shocking is that some bigots would close their eyes to this disturbing report, amongst others, and declare boldly that gej is the best thing that ever happened to Nigeria. Its so disheartening. Come 2015, we need to use our heads.

I began to dislike yorubas since i came on this forum and saw how you guys humiliate igbos. I don't like tyrannical evil oppressive people who make fun of others.Yorubas are a dark inferior tribe,I like Igbos more.
Lagos is a mega stinking slum, everywhere stunk once i got out the airport. those white companies in victoria island ,international flights and stock exchange should be moved to abuja.

You see, i really did not want to comment on your post which reeks of hate and ignorance and inferiority complex(I mean that in the nicest way). But I changed my mind. You need to be corrected.

What is you obsession with skin colour that you have to scream it like its what your life depends on? Its quite surprising that you think that Yorubas are so 'black' when we are not even the tribe with darkest skin colour in Nigeria. And while i know that your side has the largest population of people with fair-skinned people, a lot of easterners are dark skinned. Nevertheless, Skin colour is immaterial(and you will begin to cry racism as soon as u land in Heathrow).

You said that foreign companies should relocate from Lagos, You should know that no one forces companiess to their region. Something attracts them!

I understand you claim that Yoruba Nairalanders have been unfair in their remarks about easterners. How could you ever imagine, that those 'few' Yoruba nairalanders in the virtual realm of internet are somehow representative of the entire Yoruba tribe (or all yoruba nairalanders for that matter). Please I beg you, attack the individual(s) you have issues with and dont assume that everyone is the same just because they share something in Common. For example, wont it be wrong for a newspaper to report that ALL Nairalanders are tribalist (and racists obsessed with skin colour) just because a few like you have paraded your selves that way. Unlike you i would never judge the easterners I have as friends by your actions.

Now everyone, i have read every single comment on this thread! I have learned a lot. Please look at Rossike and Coogar for example, they really know stuffs. What a fine debate. I tell you, they both would probably get a standing ovation if they gave talks on TED (or any other platform for that matter).

But see how they spoiled it all with the insults and name-calling. And then we all scream that nigeria is not moving forward, that it is on the verge of collapse. That someone doesn not belong to the same school of thought, tribe religion, political party etc does not make them your enemy, not neccessarily!

When will we ever realise that we are all on the same side, working towards the same goal.

Its such a shame to see our leaders of tomorrow (or leaders of today, cos i have no idea what your ages are) conduct themselves in such a manner. Mind u its not just those two, they just seem most prominent.

Anyway, thank you guys for schooling me tonight about history and other stuffs, even though one could argue that more of what I learned are insults.

If u have seen Chimamanda Adichie's(i love that woman) talk on TED titled The Danger of a Single Story, you should remember her words, "what if we had an african TV network that told our own stories, what the Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe calls a balance of stories."

you see, i dont blame westerners for seeing Africans as savage beast who dont have stoves in their homes. That is simply what their media tells them. And what do we do about it as Africans. For goodness' sake cant we have our own world class Tv network to tell 'our own stories'. We can continue to whine from nw till God's kingdom come, but things wont change till we wake up. Even nigerians would believe Cnn rather than local stations over things that happen here in Africa. Sometimes, even our local stations just copy and paste what was said on bbc even when the news is about us. Even that 100 million nigerians are 'toilet-less' news. How many of our local stations can boldly come out and say, cnn,bbc una dey lie, we have carried out our own research and these are the actual figures. But no, they would just echo the bogus news.

Like i always say about the many problems we have here, say corruption for example, we are not tired yet. When we are tired of it all, we will do something. Talk is really cheap! Well, i am pinning my hopes on challels Tv to be that african TV network that would dare to tell our own stories (before i float mine). They are really getting better.

Mind you, I am not sayin we should pretend that all is well when there is actaually fire on the mountain. No, but there has to be a balanced truth! Not one-sided news
But in the mean time, i have a standard response for a snobbish foreigner who asks me such question as: 'do you know how to use a ball point pen or do you speak African? Or have seen a toilet before?'

Ans: If you cannot grasp the reality that being black, African, or Nigerian doesnt make me inferior to you, then i see it as an intellectual fault on your part. Do you not really know or do you merely pretend not to be aware that Aliko Dangote from Nigeria is the 14th richest man in the world. Seriously, very few Americans are richer than him. Nigeria alone has more than 300 language, there is no such language as 'African'. Dude (or babes) get an education and stop living in utter ignorance. Or do i look like I am starving to you?"

Then i would sigh. That should shut the snob up for good.

Anyway, I am willing to create that TV network that wil tell our stories and save us all this embarassment, u guys should wish me luck.
