Turning people's children into soldiers without volunteering for it is a bad idea, national guard or not, this isn't what NYSC is all about, if Nigeria need people, don't use slave labor, hire them, there are tens of millions of people in Nigeria that can fill that role, NYSC should stay as it is.
No parent slave to send their kid to school only to end up in harms way without consent.
We have one of the youngest population in the world, use them.

If he had said his idea of National Guard entails temporarily creating an elite force comprising men from the military, police, DSS and local vigilante groups; training them properly, equipping them dangerously and giving them a semi-autonomous command(answerable only to the ONSA and Presidency), with the goal to flush out terrorists in the NE, then it would have made more sense.

Victory for 120 battalion. Absolutely routed the 1st, 2nd and 3rd wave of BHT attackers. Whoever is leading them knows what he is doing.

Troops of 120 battalion stationed in Goniri, Gujba local government area of Yobe State have reportedly inflicted heavy casualties on Boko Haram terrorists who attempted to infiltrate the town through the western axis of the town.

It was learnt that the assailants, who came in droves at about 7pm yesterday, met their waterloo at the outskirt of the village where officers and men of the battalion confronted them in a fierce battle.

It was also gathered that there was wild jubilation in the town by residents of Goniri over the success recorded by the troops.

The town suffers from poor telecommunication facilities, hence it was hard to reach out to the residents for more details on what had transpired during yesterday’s gun duel.

When DAILY POST sent a text massage on the situation in Goniri town following the attack to the spokesperson of 27 Taskforce Brigade Buni Yadi, Major Alimi, he replied saying “The situation is cool and calm, Goniri is peaceful for now”.

The image maker did not give further details on the number of casualties from both sides.

Goniri, which is about 80 kilometers away from Damaturu, the Yobe state capital, was once under the occupation of the Boko Haram insurgents.

With Goniri’s attack, the insurgents have raided three communities in Yobe state in less than a week.

It is indeed a sad state of affairs when we start contemplating involving mercenaries at this stage, after 5 years. It was forgivable 3 years ago, when the BH offensive caught us pants down and the only option for shielding our balls from international shame was to hire the skilled and expensive hands of South African mercenaries.

i. ALL men on Op Lafia Dole/Zaman Lafiya cannot have same.
ii. ALL CTU and ATS cops don't have same
iii. We see SF/SOF units operating minus these tiny force multipliers (more accuracy=more kills)

This Olawepo Hashim is bereft of ideas.

He wants to establish a National Guard when the Police is understaffed and underfunded. Even at that, most of the policemen are personal security to VIPs and there are just few left for citizens.

Mrrights, tell Hashim that the police has Marine Police, Inland waterways Police, Border patrol police, Air wing (Air police) and Mounted troop (horseback). Instead of training, buying equipment and empowering them, he wants to establish an imaginary outfit.

He is clearly ignorant of the workings of our security forces and doesn't deserve to lead Nigeria.

I agree that our current Armed Services are under-trained, undermanned,overstretched and under-equipped.

But the man is right.

Most serious countries, even those smaller than our dear Nigeria have a national guard or gendarmerie as the French speakers call it.

Even in the 1980s, IBB saw it fit to create a National Guard for Nigeria.

However, fear of coup and power dilution killed the idea.

In replacement, they embarked on expanding the then elite MOPOL to serve the purpose. Forgetting that effort and money had already gone down.

We still suffer for it today, as the training bases built in anticipation of the nascent National Guard are sited in Sambisa and surrounding areas.

Today, those MOPOL now typically deployed as nothing but glorified bodyguards. The training bases nko, I hear you ask?

They are serving as BHT bases (correct as at 2016 IIRC).

Why cant our military officers have those modern rifles used by US marines to fight Boko Haram.

Below is what our DSS use.

Bro, the Tavor as pictured is more effective for Close Quarters Battle (CQB) operations versus the Kalashnikov.

The AK-47 is an assault rifle(a combination of CQB and battle rifle) and each get their use.

The Tavor is good for close protection as illustrated in your pics while the AK-47 is better suited to the war-front (easy to use, clean, maintain, scavenges ammo from other 7.62mm weapons etc)

Plus, an AK's bullet is bigger (7.62 x 51) and does more damage than a Tavor round(5.56)
