Fineman2: Story of the day;
Hello Omajuwa. I am an only child who is 42years old. My mother refused to remarry after my father died when I was young. She sacrificed so much for me to be where I am today. I got married about 7years ago. My wife and I have been looking upto God for a child. After pleading with my wife for us to adopt at least a child to no avail, I decided to get my mum who stays with us to help me speak to her woman to woman. But this made them become sworn enemies. My wife since then talks to my mother anyhow and disrespects her every now and then. It has been like that for months.
Few days ago, while returning from work, I heard their loud shouts from outside but I remained outside waiting for the shouts to be over as I didn’t want to be put in the position of choosing a side. But I had to intervene when I heard a loud slap. My wife had slapped my mother. I was enraged but I kept my cool, took my mother from the scene and catered for her. I have since not said a word to my wife.
All I feel when I am at home is sadness and depression. I have no peace in my own home. I have sacrificed a whole lot just to make this marriage work. The woman I married has become someone else. I have defended this same woman from my extended family for years. I have been labeled a ritualist and all sorts of name due to our childlessness but I have never cheated and I have always defended my wife despite knowing that she is the one with fertility issues.
Even though my mother has been trying to put up a strong front since that day, I know that she has been crying herself to sleep. I love my wife so much but I love my mum too. What could my mother have possibly done to warrant her slapping my mother? I think my wife is selfish and is no longer who I married. Why would she rather constantly inflict pain and sadness on her own family? I just want peace of mind and I have made up my mind to divorce my wife. But hope this won’t be a mistake? Is there still a marriage to save here? How do I go about it? What do I do? Please help me. I don't see the marriage breaking, I think you can amend the marriage. You have work to do between the both. Sorry for blaming you. You didn't do well that is what has led to this rift. You should learn how to function between them n peace will return. I am so sorry for your mum n I thank God for your patience not to beat your wife that day |

BreconHills: You talk about a 400% increase as if it will remain at 400% forever. When you free up an industry, competitive pressure forces down prices. The cost of sim cards approaches zero today but they were very expensive in 2000. Furthermore, the Dangote refinery is coming onstream and there will be an availability of supply. The additional taxes on petroleum profits can be easily recycled back into the system and while prices may rise across the board the fact that more players will come out in all industries will ultimately reduce prices.
It is also likely that import duties on solar panels will drop tremendously. We are seeing an upsurge in demand for solar that will; weaken demand for petrol and diesel with an impact on prices. You have to look at the ecosystem effect caused by a range of solutions rather than isolating the 40% increase. If pay rises were 400% what would that do for inflation that is sky-high?
Your point would be better made if you could provide your own alternative plan and not nebulous and fairy-like platitudes. Contrast plan vs plan. Its easy to breakl things down but more mentally challenging to provide workable solutions. This is the bane of Nigerian "intelligence"
Waiting for your plan. When they did conditional cash credits you said it was a fraud, free school meals fraud, trader moni, fraud, graduate employment schemes fraud. Why don't you explain your alternative after all I believe you've thought about the matter beyond the level of mere criticism.

Petrol is more than Kerosene o. Since kerosene prices skyrocked and mostly not available since the subsidy was removed. What will you bring up as a cheap alternative to petrol. I pray they removed it and gets the other parts right else we go just suffer as a nation in vain LordAdam16: Yes, and everyone uses gas now because the kerosene subsidy was removed.
If kerosene subsidy had been maintained, the penetration rate for gas will be much lower than it is today. The economic impact from the expansion of gas use will be muted. Look around you and notice how many jobs and the level of economic activity gas infrastructure has generated. Some commercial companies can now move off the national grid because of the buildout.
The erstwhile cabals doing nothing but sending invoices to the FG and smuggling kerosene over the border to get double returns have turned their attention to more productive pursuits. And Nigeria saves at least $1b from not paying that subsidy.
Gasoline will be similar. Transportation prices will surge initially, but that'll level off in time. And if we were a serious country, $5b of the $8b saved should be earmarked to secure a $90b low-cost facility (at an avg. of 2%) from a mix of international development banks to build out our grid on a build for transfer model. Where the government builds with these low interest facilities that only governments can access, then sell them at significant premiums to a mix of international and local investors. Rinse and repeat. The jobs and economic activity from such a scheme should supercharge our anemic GDP growth rate.
Everyone benefits from this. The politicians, civil servants, regulators, banks, investors, operators can skim from the project and there'll still be a visible, impactful build out that changes the economic landscape.
But this is Nigeria. We go out of our way to make things hellish. It's like our favorite national pastime.

tunwumi: This comment is very interesting. The main issue is why palliative when it will disappear to ghost. Instead the fund should go to infrastructure like road, bridges, hospital, and industrial infrastructure for development. U see how they have been thinking sometimes ago I wrote here of how unsustainable the npower stuff is and how it is not the best though maybe some sort of immediate measures but not a way of growth some people who maybe beneficiaries were angry. The truth is we have the most lazy set of leaders. Leaders who sees the world in a loopsided way, people who consider employment as them giving jobs rather than creating the enabling environment. Fund research, create infrastructure etc and watch the wonders that will spring. Like you I am also hopeful for to refuse to be is to be suicidal. The Tinubu administration must do something differently else they will remove the subsidy we will suffer and little or no gain will be seen from the suffering. |

This kind of comparison is very insane. Let's try and be very logical 1. Do we have the same package interms of education? 2. Tell me the ratio of the income of those places compared to the cost of their education. 3. Nothing in Nigeria is costly when converted in other currency of first world countries so does it mean it is actually cheaper. That's same way prices of fuel per litter is compared and ours look very cheap where as the cost burden on us here is more than it is in the countries where it was higher than ours. tunwumi: I challenge you to mention anywhere in the world that have cheaper education than Nigeria.
I said it earlier, wisdom come with researching not to just comment on bitterness.
Well it depends on which divide you are, I believe and hope for a better Nigeria.
It is possible |
Politics › Re: What Might Happen To Nigeria Currency After Subsidy Removal? by dbestuncle: 11:46am On Apr 18, 2023 |
tunwumi: The currency will be stable as the loophole of subsidy payment will be blocked. But the main issue is the purchasing power within the economy as the price of fuel may be around 450-500.
Most Nigerian are unreasonable in commodity pricing, they are on the exploitation campaign. This is subject to a lot of uncertainty but the removal must be done. The government will have a lot of money at hand to spend with the removal.
We have to close mark the state governors as they will become wasteful due to surplus funds.
It will make a lot of sense if Dangote refinery can also come on stream. It will help to control the prices as transaction will be in niara. As much as we have agreed that we need to remove fuel subsidy, what have they said will be a palliative measures for the economy. The mumu arrangement of shaing the borrowed $800million for 10million households 5,000 naira per month is the kind of dumb things that they do. Our Governments are not and they have never been sincere with us if not eith all the noice about repairing the refineries we are still where we are till now |
