MelesZenawi:The idea of needing to run to anyone in hard times is actually one of the set reasons why Nigeria is the mess it is. Run to who for exactly what kind of hard time? Do people run to people in the US, UK, China or even Ghana? Who told you Edo State people seek friendship and allies? They fight their battles themselves. Haven't you observed that the fear of rejection within the SS didn't stop them from being in an opposite party as against the mainstream party in the region? You must be a commedian. Unfortunately you have still not been able to mention just one of those things which Edos and Yorubas exclusively share in common. Oba, I am told, means yam barn in Igbo. However the fact that the Omoku people of Rivers State use it as the title of their monarch negates all your hypothesis that Edos' use it for their monarch automatically translates to Yorubaness on their part. . I have told you that outside Benin and Agbede, Oba is not used anywhere as monarchical title in Edo State. I have also told you that the actual Bini word for king is not even Oba but Ogiso which has no Yoruba connotation at all. I have also told you that the bearing of Yoruba names was for political advantage in the Old Western Region which was domineered over by Yorubas but with the creation of the Midwest the whole trend reversed to the indegeous names. It is normal for one culture to heavily influence another but that can never mean that they are of the same origin. Today, we all Nigerians share a lot in common with the English but that doesn't make us Britons. In the pre-colonial era the Benin Empire was never under Yoruba suzerainty but an autonomous power of her own which even fought wars with the Yoruba empires of the time. So how could such have ever been a Yoruba enclave? This has nothing to do with political correctness but the truth. Perception and reality are two different things. You seem unaware of the numerous threads here in which different and indeed all Edo monickers have consistently denounced the theory of Edos' sameness with Yorubas. Contrary to your claim the average Yoruba is even more inclined to view Edo as Igbo albeit erroneously. In my neighborhood in Lagos the Yorubas there term me Omo-Igbo regardless of the countless number of times I have told them I am Edo not Igbo. In fact on one occasion, my boss' wife, an Ijebu woman, told me to my face that beyond Ondo State Eastwards, they see all of us as Igbos and will continue to do so regardless of how much we claim we are not. There was an instance of me having a misunderstanding with a Yoruba guy in the same neighborhood, and his fellow Yorubas tried to settle it. After narrating my version in English, the Yoruba guy began to narrate his in Yoruba. For the fact that I don't understand Yoruba, I demanded that he spoke in English. Immediately the panel of judges said 'Okay you are Igbo'. I replied, "No I am Edo'. Then the next thing they said was, "You are all the same". And that was what how I just walked away. So I don't know where you conjured this your perception from that an average Yoruba sees an Edo person as a brother. In fact whenever push comes to shove, the average Yoruba person lays it bare that Edos aren't related to them. At best they would say we are adopted or even fake Yorubas. I have experienced it personally. In the Old Western Region they labelled our representatives as 'kobokobo' meaning a people whose languages were unintelligible to them and their cultures and value systems altogether strange. I am not hating on anyone but just saying it exactly as it actually is. I have no use for political correctness. We only sometimes share political ideology with Yorubas because we see them as more realistic and pragmatic in politics than other Southern tribes who rather delude themselves with one-Nigeria ideology despite the preponderance of evidence to the contrary and its attendant bitter lessons. |
nonaira:Get out of my sight. Wasn't it you who mentioned me first? Your attempt to twist the story and lay the blame on mullato claro is pure falsehood. All Mullato Claro's anti-Igbo campaign were retaliatory and never provocative and that is why you couldn't make good your threat to substantiate that claim with links to the threads in which he allegedly started it. You have earned suspension countless times here and always returned with a new moniker because of your tribalistic inclinations and the tendency to render unprovoked attacks on dissenting voices against your beloved but misreable and destructive PDP. And you think anyone either gives a fucking damn about you hate filled Igbos who plunged us all into the mess we battle with till today? Unlike you, I don't detest any tribe. What I detest is revisionism and lies regardless of who it emanates from. I was initially on guest mode on NL but the unprovoked anti-Edo bile from Igbos, especially one Xtrose, and their revisionist tales of the alleged roles played by Edos against them during the war made me register to fight back and put the records straight, and that I have been doing with unassailable facts and will continue to. Your terming this igbophobia will not detract me from it a bit. I guess Mullato Claro also started the war tales based anti-Igbo campaign, right? Then in 2015 you Igbos took the anti-Edo campaign to a new high over the presidential election results thus automatically setting me up for a greater resistance. All I too have always seen is that when it comes to facts based debate you particularly are always lost in the woods hence are quick to save face with abuses with which you prove yourself a victim of moronic plague and peddler of propaganda. |
MelesZenawi:Truth appears like hate to the typical Nigerian who naturally loves to wallow in lies and make belief. The phantom similarities between Edo and Yorubas doesn't make Edos Yorubas any more than the similarities between some other separate tribes make them same as each other. A community called Omoku in Rivers State have their monarch described as oba I guess that makes them Yorubas? In fact only the Binis have Oba and they alone don't make up Edo State. In other parts of the state their monarchs are not called Oba but appelations like Imah, Otaru, Ukpilagbe, etc. Even the Benin monarchs were originally called Ogisos and not Obas. Language fusion and spelling similarities also abound between Igbo and Yoruba Languages for which I have already given copious examples. The Ooni of Ife recently declared that Igbos were once indigenous to Ife. But hypocrites like you overlook all that and begin to fabricate phantom cultural affinities between Edos and Yorubas. Edo State is a heterogenous mix of different tribes, so how does it even make sense for anyone to claim that Yorubas are related to all of them? You are the one who should stop all these revisionist tales because they have taken you nowhere. Leave Edo State people to be who they say they are. It is not by force to belong to you. Your actual brothers are trapped in Northern states like Kogi and Kwara and have been crying to get reunited with their kit and kins in the SW but you ignore them totally and keep dragging Edo with whom you really have no cultural links. Why this attache by force? Why? |
Nowenuse:You are an ignoramus of gargantuan proportions. Etsakos were a clan in the ancient Benin Kingdom who had to migrate out of it in protest of harsh treatment meted out to them by the reigning king at that period. No Edo people are of Nupe Origin. Cut that dirty crap. In one line you claim Afemais are of Nupe origin. In another line you claim that their being captured as slaves by Nupes led to the introduction of Nupe names to them. How could Nupe names have to later be introduced to a people who were supposedly already of Nupe origin from the beginning? Can't you see that your stories are not adding up? You think the name "Afemai" actually defines every ethnicity in Edo North? It is actually an Etsako appellation but loosely applied to the Senatorial District just for political expediency. Edo North is not an ethnically homogeneous area at all. Stop peddling ignorance. Another evidence of your ignorance is the claim that the spread of Islam ended in Agbede. There are actually indegeous moslems in Ewu which is further south of Agbede. Mr. Man, you know nothing about Edo State. I will advise you to keep off issues concerning the place so you won't continue to embarrass yourself in a public forum. |
Nowenuse:Your ignorance of the Oshuku generic appelation doesn't detract from its factuality. All what you wrote above are the lies which have been repeated for ages and have therefore worn an appearance of the truth. The mere fact that you can't see that the Oshuku's indegeous to Cross River State are not classified as Egbura, Egbira and whatever you call it means that you are wrong is a clear indication that it is you who have comprehension problem. Even the Ebira guy you mentioned above has, in obvious acknowledgedment of his ignorance in face of superior argument and historical accounts, surrendered for more education by releasing his WhatsApp number for a chat yet you a complete outsider has come around pontificating on that. What a hypocrisy! You yourself have always been on NL trying to make clarifications on the differences between the Hausafulanis and the Middle Belters to which you belong despite the average Southern sees all of you as one and the same. If we are therefore to go by your reasoning, then I too can conclude that as long as most Hausafulanis claim that all of you Northern Nigerians do actually speak Hausa Language, then you are a Hausafulani. It is rather disingenuous of you to bring the issue of speaking the same Language into this discuss as if that has anything to do with the bone of contention which is the fact that Ebiras have been trying, albeit fruitlessly, to impose their own identity on the others. A honest interloper would have asked for more education on the Oshuku appelation rather than dismiss it just because he has never heard of it. Does the mere fact that Egbas, Yewas, Ekitis, etc all speak Yoruba make all of them Ijebus? Even the Ebiras themselves know of the Oshuku appelation hence none of them has denied it here. It is the main inscription even on the emblem they themselves designed for their so called Ebira vonya movement. So I don't even think you are honest for claiming you have never heard of it. Isn't it funny that you, as a complete outsider, are the one trying to tell a people who they are? Why then do you fret here when others classify you as a Hausafulani by virtue of the fact that you are from the Northern part of the country? Please you have no business on this Oshuku issue hence you will do well to keep yourself out of it. |
MelesZenawi:I guess it was out of love your brothers launched that campaign of caulumny against Edos who under normal circumstances mind their business and don't concern themselves with the affairs of others? If you want the links to the over 50 of those threads in which Igbos started that hate campaign against Edo State just because of bitterness over the 2015 election results statistics from the state, I will gladly furnish you with them. |
MelesZenawi:Mr. Double Standards, kindly tell us where you were when your brothers started it all beginning from 2015 by launching a campaign of caulumny against Edo State over the outcome of the 2015 presidential election results in the State by which Buhari scored 40% to Jonathan's 60% and which, according to your kinsmen here on NL, was too much for Buhari from a SS state. I personally reminded them how they too have as a tribe alway given over 70% votes thus outright victory to Hausafulanis or their Southern stooges over Southerners in all federal elections from independence to 2007 but they wouldn't let reason prevail over emotions. So put yourself in my shoes and see if you would develop love for such a tribe which gets provoked not even because their preferred candidate lost in your State but that he won with a margin of not up to 90%. Be honest. |
nonaira:I guess you have not noticed the Edophobic Igbo tribal bigots who inspired in me a retaliatory hatred for Igbos, right? You are rather the one making a fool of yourself by being economical with a truth you know deep down in you. Where were you when your Igbo brothers started it all by beginning to profile Edo State people and labelling us traitors, calling them Fulanis and Yorubas of the SS, saying Edo is a SW or even NC State and all other abusive utterances just over their choice of APC government at the state level. Some of us put it before them back then that their own Rochas Okorocha was of the APC too but the hypocrites kept on bashing Edo all the same. Despite all that provocation no Edo person ever claimed that Imo state People are the Yorubas and Fulanis of the SE neither did we deride them as being part of the NC for being an APC controlled state under Rochas Okorocha..yet you expect me to be Igbo loving and even send thank you cards to those Edophobic Igbo monikers here on NL? You must be a commedian. You Igbos cannot take one tenth of the shit you throw at others effortlessly. The day you folks stop your resentment against Edo for their political choices is the day my Igbophobia will seize. Any baby which decides that his mother will not sleep must himself stay awake to achieve that. |
realoscar84:Why are you yourself upset and troubled by the revelation that there is actually nothing like 'Ebira Etuno'? That coinage is nothing but a very recent fraudulent revisionist tale embarked upon by Ebiras with the intent of replacing the Oshuku appelation with the term 'Ebira' in their quest for greater political relevance at the national level owing to their loss of such at the demise of military rule in 1999. Etunos are not a subset of Ebiras at all but are rather of co-ordinate status within the Oshuku Descendants group. Get it now? And if it is not all politically motivated, why do you people leave out the Oshuku Descendants in Cross River State in this your rather queer quest to subsume everyone under the Ebira appelation? It is obviously because they are geographically too far away to be useful to this your quest for a larger political relevance at the national level. Simple! I spent the first 33 years of my life without hearing anything like Ebira-Etuno. In fact while Ebiras enjoyed national relevance and patronage from the militaristic Northern Oligarchy during military rule, they used to label Etunos as 'annavi' which literally means bush people and savages. They would mock the Etuno language as inferior and unintelligible by spoofing their pronounciations. But once military rule ended and the relevance became threatened both nationally and within the politics of Kogi State, we suddenly began to hear things like 'Ebira-Etuno, Ebira vonya, Oshuku Ebira, blah blah blah blah" If at all the Oshuku appelation has to be replaced, then it should be with Etuno since according to the Oshuku migrational history, the Etunos' patriach was the eldest of the four brothers and that Etuno was the originally intended destination as they moved away from Opoto land. It therefore doesn't really make sense for the descendants of the second born who settled along the way to assume control and impose their whims and caprices over those of the first born who took the pains to get to the originally agreed promised land. It is all together rubbish. |
RemiOAjayi:The bearing of Yoruba names by Edo and Delta people was purely in quest for political advantage in the Yoruba dominated Western Region of old and nothing else. It is exactly like how most Middle Belt tribes bear Hausa names when they are actually of distinct tribes from Hausafulanis. Even some Yorubas bear names like Sanni, Bello, etc and I guess that make Yorubas related to Hausafulanis, right? Now let me tell you the reason why Yorubas lie about that cum the benefit they hope to derive from doing so. It is natural for every other neighbouring tribe to try to attach themselves to the history of a tribe which is known for her greatness and alluring history. We all know that all over the world the Bini history and culture is regarded as superior to all other tribes'. In fact the Europeans confessed to meeting civilization in Benin but bringing it to all the other tribes including Yorubas. They added that Benin artefacts rivalled those of Europe and shared similar technological creation inputs to those of their European counterparts. Recall that it is only in Benin that Europeans ever stole handiworks made by black Africans meaning they acknowledged that Benin technology and skills were superior to theirs. You don't steal what you can do a better version of, you know? So this glory is what Yorubas and indeed every other Southern tribe loves to share by attaching their history to that of Binins and Edos in general |
agadez007:You don't give a flying horseshit yet you are here quoting me. See yourself? Are we the ones nicknamed chestbeaters to warrant the above rant from you? If you don't care about what happens in Edo State then what is your fucking business replying to my comment? You can as well vote Atiku and even Obasanjo as your governor and deputy, who cares? |
agadez007:Obsession begets obsession. Are you suggesting that you have not seen the loads of threads in which Igbos just attack Edos without any slightest provocation but just out of resentment over the choice of Edo people to be ruled by the APC after PDP nearly killed and buried the state in her eight years unprecedented and monumental misrule supervised by Lucky Igbinedion and Tony Anenih? |
Ctorch:The only people to whom Edos have close blood ties are the Urhobos and Isokos. All else you hear are fabrications for political profiling. |
Ctorch:There is nothing like a larger family of Yorubas to which Edo belongs. According to Bishop Ajayi Crowther who was himself a Yoruba and an authority on Yoruba Anthropology, the Yoruba appelation is a very recent invention aimed at unifying previously unrelated ethnic groups occupying the Southwestern parts of the territory now called Nigeria. Prior to the advent of that appelation the Edos had been known as a distinct and cohesive people. So how does Edo which existed before Yorubas suddenly fall under the so called Yoruba family? |
AgentGoat:Does the similarity of the languages automatically translate to being the same? The mere fact that we are even talking of their similarity makes it clear that they are not the same. If they were one and the same language, then no one would be talking of similarity in the first instance. Please recall that you can't be saying Hausa is similar to Hausa or Igbo similar to Igbo. But we can say "Igbo is similar to Yoruba" meaning they are different languages in the first instance to warrant a search for similarity. Above all, similarity is a relative term whose validity is difficult to measure. |
Emary:Well, if commonness of an assumption makes that assumption the truth, then the world wouldn't have been accused of ignorance as it is currently done. |
Ctorch:So it takes a mod to say something for that thing to be true. The said mod once erroneously claimed in another thread that no part of Edo State is a hilly terrain and hence exposed his ignorance about the state he so speaks of with authority. Unfortunately you have not given any specific citation or instance of the similarities you allege between Edo and Yorubas, yet you claim eyes can see them. I have rather pointed specific examples of similarities between Yorubas and you Igbos. In all his Yoruba irredentism Awolowo the most knowledgeable Yoruba man to ever walk on earth surface, never targeted anywhere in the present Edo State because his personal reserch visits made it clear to him that there is really no cultural or linguistic affinity between Edo and Yorubas. The only place he targeted is the Itsekiri enclave whom he helped install/impose their Olu as the Paramount ruler of Warri hence the intractible Warri crisis. But it continues to beat common sense why you Igbos focus on Edo in your search for Yorubaness but abandon Delta with the obviously Yoruboid Itsekiris and Olukunmis. How doesn't this prove clearly that it is all aimed at political blackmail? The bearing of Yoruba names in Edo doesn't make them Yorubas any more than their bearing of Nupe names like Damisa, Daniyan, Attah, Dirisu, Daudu, Mayaki, etc. make them Nupes. All these are just due to cross-cultural interferences through trade or war and conquests. Yorubas too do bear such Nupe names, and it doesn't make them Nupes. Igbos never really had interactions with many other tribes prior to colonization hence the less frequency of adoption of names of other tribes. |
RemiOAjayi:So the mere fact that Yorubas bear English names means they are now white men or that they migrated from England to their present location, right? The mere fact that Yorubas christians bear Jewish names at the point of baptism means they are now Israelites? The adoption of names outside one's culture is the most unreliable evidence of shared culture and origin. Prior to amalgamation of Nigeria, none of the tribes which currently make up Edo State gave Yoruba names to their children. The quest for political relevance in the Yoruba dominated Old Western Region necessitated the rather myopic decision by parents of that generation to start giving Yoruba names to their children in total abandonment of their own native names. In Akoko-Edo and Etsako areas specifically, names like Saiki, Damisa, Daudu, Daniyan, Mayaki, Sanni, etc which are all Nupe names were also given to children. Does that make Edos Nupes at the same time as 'being' Yorubas for bearing Yoruba names? Mind you that due to the regrettable identity crisis which the bearing of non-native names has caused in Edo State, parents of this very generation have reverted to giving native names to newborns. |
Emary:So Oduduwa who, according to Yoruba history, dropped from the sky and landed in Ife, later bore a son who travelled from Ife to Egypt to become the projenitor of the Binis who came from the Egyptian plains according to their own history? Aren't we supposed to be logical in our approach to historical reconstructions? If the Yoruba history you claim to have been taught in school is anything to go by, then why haven't wondered why during the times of the Old Western Region, the Yoruba chief whip in the Region's parliament would, at the opening of sessions, give salutations to the Ooni of Ife, Alafin of Oyo, Awujale of Ijebu land and leave out the Oba of Benin and then declare that he had saluted all the Yoruba traditional rulers? The fact that none of those Yoruba monarchs he mentioned ever "corrected" him to include the Oba of Benin means they themselves knew deep down in their hearts that the theory of Edo being Yoruba was a politically motivated fabrication. You rely on Yoruba "history" to determine who Edos are rather than Edo people's own history? So you found reliable and plausible the history of a people who claimed that their projenitor dropped from the sky and are even relying on whatever such mythical history says of another tribe? Yoruba history also tells us that Igbos are emigrants of Ife, so we can as well conclude that Igbos are actually Yorubas more so that a lot of Igbo words have very close spellings and pronouncuation with their Yoruba equivalents e.g. Orisha (Yoruba) and Olisah (Igbo), Ewure (Yoruba) and Ewu (Igbo), Enu (Yoruba) and Onu (Igbo), etc? |
AgentGoat:They speak Etuno and not Ebira. Simple and short. |
Rgade:Nearly everyone who refers to Edos as Yorubas are Igbos, and I have given the reason for that already. Check all pan-Southern Nigeria Facebook groups and you will see the names who constantly try to blackmail Edo with the Yoruba tag just because Edo seems to prove wrong their sentiment that SS/SE is a PDP enclave. In fact even here on NL you can take a look at the moniker's who argue that Edo is a SW or NC state for being controlled by APC, and judge for yourself which tribe they mostly belong to. |
Onijagidijagan:I wonder for these Igbo ignoramuses online o! They say Edo is Yoruba despite they can't mention just one Edo town to which Yorubas are indigenous. Ironically they even claim Delta State with its Yoruboid Itsekiri and Olukunmi people is an Igboid State. Confused clowns. |
sagitariusbaby:You made my day with this comment. There are actually at least 15 different tribes in Akoko-Edo out of which none is Yoruboid let alone being Yoruba contrary to some tales from Ignoramuses online. The peaceful coexistence among them is founded on the fact that they don't preach one-Akoko-Edo the way one-Nigeria is preached to defraud one another at the national level, but each tribe is allowed to assert herself and protect her culture from undue interference from the others. They all know their bounds and respect one another's desire to be themselves. This is just the secret to their peaceful togetherness despite a whole world of difference among them. |
AgentGoat:It is rather you who doesn't know anything. That guy you quoted is perfectly correct. There are no Ebiras indegeous to Edo State. Igarras are not Ebiras. Go and get your facts right about this and eschew the recent dubious attempts being made by your people to supplant the Oshuku appelation with Ebira. |
Ctorch:And what are the basis of your assumption? We understand that Edo State People's preference for APC government in the state has so much planted resentment into you Igbos that you have for the past 6 years been peddling this narrative to blackmail the people into going back to the PDP which you erroneously assume is the SS' and SE's party. But we don't give a damn because your refusal to also lump Delta State as well with Youruba despite her obvious more manifestly Yoruboid Itsekiris and Olukunmis together with Urhobos and Isokos who trace their ancestry to Edo all expose the political undertone behind it. As long as you keep trying to paint Edo as Yorubas twins without carrying along Deltans who with their own mouths claim sameness of ancestors with Edos, then your hypocrisy and quest for political correctness becomes obvious even to a simpleton. Keep deluding yourself. |
realoscar84:You are rather the one who should stop speaking out of ignorance. Ebira is not even a language in the first instance but a dialect of the Oshuku Language. What is spoken by Igarra people is Etuno and not Ebira. Stop misinforming people. Leave Igarra people alone and face your Kogi State. You Ebiras must learn to stop this your tendency of trying to supplant the Oshuku generic name with Ebira. Igarra people are not a subset of Ebiras, rather they are as independent to themselves as Ebiras are to themselves too. In Cross River State there is an Oshuku speaking tribe there as well and they are not called Ebiras. All this offensive attempts to reclassify Etunos as Ebiras is a recent politically motivated fraudulent development. Please stop it. |
Madaraa1:Don't mind him. |
Mynd44:Could you kindly mention who those Yorubas from Edo State are? You have peddled this misinformation for too long. |
Ctorch:Unfortunately, you seem unaware that Edo is not even a homogeneous state in terms of tribes. Isn't it ironical that in your imagination you feel Edo should be added to Yoruba despite no tribe in the state has any fundamental cultural affinity with Yorubas but for a state like Delta with manifestly Yoruboid groups like Itsekiris and Olukunmis you have no qualms in seeing it not added to Yoruba. Virtually all Edo Languages have the v, z and ch sounds which are absent in Yoruba hence one is always left wondering where your likes conjure this pro-Yoruba affinity theory for Edo while leaving out Delta State despite her more Yoruboid indigenous peoples. Does the need for political correctness really take Nigerian (especially Igbos) this far into manufacture of false narratives against all glaring facts and logic? |
Litmus:Bridge roads have drainage systems that are very fast and effective. Have you ever seen water gather on a bridge for up to 10 minutes after rainfall? If the drainage systems on ground roads are constructed to be as effective as those of bridges, potholes will become history on ground roads. |
gidgiddy:You have kept on repeating this stale line of "Ironsi never conducted any coup..." Who even told you this? A coup is any take over of power in such a manner which cricumvents the laid down constiutional provisions for that. Ironsi planned and executed a coup within a coup. What the constiution he swore to protect and preserve in all circumstances dictated for him to do at that moment was to simply swear in Alhaji Dipcharima as Balewa's replacement, also replace the slain premiers with their deputies, proceed to punish the coup plotters according to the military courtmatial laws of which he was the chief custodian, and returned to the barracks as a professional soldier who should show no interest in politics while still in office. But his greed for power and personal aggrandizement got the better part of him as he told the parliarmentarians to give him power and threatened them into unwilling submission by claiming that he would not be held responsible for whatever befell the country if political power was not surrendered to him. That itself was a coup. For a supposed chief security officer of the entire country to in advance deny responsibility for any security breach should he be denied power means he was up to a very dishonest game. And each time you claim Ironsi foiled the coup, you sound rather shallow and illogical for the following reason: Ifeajuna's coup was aimed at introducing military rule and subverting the independence constiution. Now Ironsi's action ended up producing exactly the same result. So how did that amount to foiling of the coup? An actual foiling of the coup should have resulted in preserving the democracy in place and returning power to the civilians without any alteration in the extant constiution. It is like Thief A robs you of your money and as he was on his way escaping with it, Thief B stops him and robs him too of the money and then ran away. Then you begin to commend Theif B for foiling Theif A's attempt to rob you despite he didn't return the money to you after robbing Thief A of it. Does that make sense? |
