Admiral Augustus Aikhomu was the first naval officer to attain the rank of 4-star admiral, but he attained that rank after he had left active service.

Augustus Aikhomu was a commodore when he was made the chief of naval staff after the 1983 coup. He was subsequently promoted to the rank of rear admiral.
