Within the next 3 to 4 years we will have steady power in Nigeria. There’s a lot of stuff going on to increase output, man. As we speak the distribution infrastructure is being overhauled and rebuilt by Siemens, plus other stuff.
If you truly believe this sir, I say with all respect, I don't think you know Nigeria.

Prayerfully, four years from now we will both be alive and well and I may remember to draw your attention to this post of yours.

In particular, let us see how much increase in power generation there will be as compared to today.

The telecoms were able to work because Obasanjo did not set their prices at 1 kobo per minute

Meanwhile, discos cannot set their prices nether can gencoss. Result, they operate at a loss, and investment becomes difficult because no return on investment.

Then there is the power theft. Including at high levels of government. ( Does aso Rock owe telecoms any money?).

Cost reflective tarrifs.

You won't work well if you were underpaid. So why should discos work well with underpaid?
They are not operating at a loss because the difference is subsidized by government.

Anyway let's agree that even if consumer payment is a problem, it is not the only problem and in my view not even the main reason for our epileptic power situation.

Agreed.

On another topic , fuel subsidy is another fraud we have been committing against ourselves since the Abacha Era. We all knew it was high stakes fraud, but we all looked away.
There is too much fraud embedded in the system. When the day of reckoning comes, then we all feign surprise and shock.
Do you agree with the subsidy removal and how it was done?

So why does GSM work despite it being in a corrupt country?

If your employer was not paying you well, you won't work optimally.

Better do some reading. I used to think like you until I did some reading over the last ten years.
My dear brother, I am nothing if not a reader.

The telecomms industry is very different. It came in at an advanced stage in our trajectory and was picked up by international companies such as MTN, Econet (later Vmobile, later Airtel). These companies built the network as a private investment with international financing.

In Nigeria, you need to understand that there is, and there has always been, a very deliberate sabotage of the power sector. This country is the largest importer of generators in the world by a large margin. There are vested interests in ensuring that we have no power and they get paid for that. If Nigeria has steady power today, believe you me, the global generator manufacturing industry will take a BIG hit.

This issue is closely related to the matter of our refineries. For decades they have not worked. There are also vested interests in ensuring that they don't. Petrol importers for years made a killing on that. Please do not think for a second that these people rest. They are busy, going to and fro daily, bribing and compromising people in power to ensure their market thrives.

The most important thing in making something work is political will. If the leader or leaders of a country don't want something to work, it will not work.

So I think shifting the blame to the consumer is a little simplistic. As far as I know, most Nigerians would gladly pay for steady electricity.

There will be steady power if Nigeria

1. Pays a cost reflective tarrif.

2. Stops using power without paying.

Fix those two issues, other palava would fix itself

See Ivory coast and Ghana. They pay over 187 naira per kWh.Everyone pays Nigeria pays between 50 to 70 naira per kWh and 30-40 percent do not pay. Including your government.

For more information, the PDF document ; solving the liquidity crunch in the power sector is a good place to start.

Good morning
If you think it's about consumers not paying their bills only, maybe you don't know just how corrupt this country is.

Bad policies, yes.
But the recent slump of the Naira was not only inevitable, but predictable. It is just delayed moment of reckoning.
For 8yrs , Nigeria was ruled, micromanaged by a bloke who was not shy to admit that he didn't understand how the economy works. He borrowed, borrowed and borrowed more for non-productive ventures. We used scare resources to defend the Naira rather than allow it to gradually find its true productive value over time.
The shock we are seeing over the last couple of months simply could have occurred gradually over an 8yr period.

A currency represents the productive capacity of the economy.
The Naira has lost its sovereignty for 3 main reasons.

1. It is neither backed by any Gold reserves nor a productive economy. An economy RUN on imported generators that RUN on imported fuel cannot ever be productive.

2. Nigeria is heavily indebted. Our forex earnings from crude oil are being primarily used for debt servicing.

3. We still run the most expensive, most inefficient and most corrupt political system in the world. A system that neither inspires confidence, patriotism nor investments.
All of this is true but floating the naira is the immediate trigger for this present slump. Very bad timing after the subsidy removal only weeks before.

What's dumb about this is that it is simply a list of facesaving insults—nothing of substance. At no point do you point to something I said that was wrong... I provided clear arguments as to why you were wrong... and you devolved into nonsequiturs and ad hominem, like a child. quite clearly you were not qualified to render an opinion on this case... but you pretended you knew it all. You repeatedly remind us all that you've "rendered legal advice in over 40 countries"... as if that qualifies you as an expert in US law. The typical Nigerian mentality. A shame.
Oga you were the one who started insults. Check your posts. I never insulted you before you insulted me. I am tired of you. You know nothing. You are a simpleton.

I have repeatedly pointed out your embarrassing errors. The last one was saying that nothing can be done after he has pled guilty. Only a daft retard would think this conversation was about what to do after throwing in the towel. After the game is over. How could you say something so irredeemably silly?

Before that I gave you analogies and in the most infantile and retarded way you took them as statements of fact. That's as bad as Jesus giving a parable, say of the Good Samaritan, and you replying that it never happened.

That's how unfathomably dense you have been.

Actually Okafor's law is a myth. If a woman returns after being banged so good, what makes you think she's not getting it other places? If you're proud that you did her good and she returns, wait until shit goes sour in the relationship and see if she won't dump you. And by the way, if she keeps returning, it means she loves it so much that she can cheat it on you whenever you're not around or too busy. So what's there to be proud about a hoe?

Another nonsensical ad hoc policy dead on arrival.
I still fail to understand how restricting the availability of forex would help the Naira.
Nigeria is heavily dependent on imported goods, from toothpick to the very fuel we use to run our generator-economy. Therefore, forex would always be in great demand. If the supply is disrupted by ill-conceived ad hoc policies, the value of the available forex would always go up and up.
But we have been import dependent forever and the naira didn't zoom this low. That tells you it's not just the import dependence causing what's currently happening. It's bad, horribly bad policy making.

Konquest:
That's very statesmanlike.

NOTE: The decision to suspend Niger was a joint ECOWAS decision taken by ALL the Presidents and NOT an individual decision taken by the Nigerian President. This is to correct the misinformation of the poster above me and his dishonest ilk.

In the final analysis, negotiation skills have to kick in whenever there are crises situations around the world. Emotional intelligence is key in every human interaction for sustainable development. The military must be encouraged to return to democracy at the shortest possible time with sanctions lifted gradually to enable full integration into ECOWAS in the light of several capital projects such as the international gas export pipeline project passing through Niger Republic to Algeria via Nigeria which will have huge economic significance in West Africa for gas exports to Europe.

There's still a 50/50 chance those 3 countries of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso would still go ahead with the plan for their own confederate state or union. If they do go ahead then they'll have to go through some birth pangs. Just like Senegal and Gambia that fused to form Senegambia but later broke up again to become independent of each other.

Singapore and Malaysia also fused into one union in the 1960s but later went their separate ways with Singapore majorly being the better for it under the guidance and leadership of the late Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew who took that city-state from a developing nation of about 3 major ethnicities of Chinese (over 80 percent), Malays, and Indians, to a world-class, technologically and economically advanced nation.
Leave story. BAT hast lost the stare down, the contest of wills, he has blinked first with a wholesale capitulation (not the gradual removal of sanctions you mention).

He acts without thinking and has been demystified. A great politician doesn't always make a great president.

This is more idiocy from you frankly. You're a Nigerian lawyer with zero experience in US law... and here you are, pontificating with a lot of English words but saying nothing of substance.

First, the 5th Amendment goes beyond just protection against self-incrimination. Second, it has zero relevance in this matter. The wife was obligated to report once her husband made her aware of his federal crime. She could claim the 5th amendment and then spend the next 20 years in prison once it was proven she was aware of what her husband did.

Let me repeat what others have said that seems to not penetrate your bubble of misguided self-importance... there are zero "interesting directions" this could have played. First, you are NOT a US lawyer, and cannot for the life of me understand why you think you are more knowledgeable than the US Justice Department and his defense lawyer. Second, he confessed to his wife and made a plea deal. There are no avenues left when you voluntarily plead guilty to a crime. Just so you are aware, the conviction rate for federal prosecutors here is >90%. It would be nice to not have those who have no literacy in US law continuously making a fool of themselves. Stick to Nigerian law... thanks.
Just look at the bold. Who would imagine that one has been talking about what can be done after he has confessed and done a plea deal. Clearly one has since been talking about all options which would have been available from the get go, pre confession, pre deal. This conversation could not be read any other way save by a re.tard.

You huff and puff but are beyond shallow. You have no sense of nuance, subtlety and fine detail whatsoever. You repeatedly misunderstand what is being said in a most embarrassing way: it is painful to watch.

One has tried to be most gentlemanly to you, but its useless. You are simply vacant.

If you don't know it, American law is rooted in the same English Common law as Nigerian law, and I have rendered legal advise in over 40 countries including places as far away as Russia, the UK and the UAE.

You are dense. I have nothing more to say to you. Good night.
