As an aside I read JT Edson books as a child and even then I could see there was something off about them. Eventually I saw them for what they are apologist books glorifying the south. In one of them a black dude said he was better off as a slave. Then you have stories like the hooded riders which are a naked celebration of the KKK. but a person who had no knowledge of slavery would not see the insidious white washing of the deep south and their practices.

About animals talking, I believe it may happen one day. For some animals intelligent enough, all it takes is an adjustment to their vocal chords which I am sure science will soon make possible.
