The Arewa Consultative Forum on Wednesday disagreed with the 19 northern state governors that northerners were not parasites on other regions of the country.


ACF said that indeed, “northerners are lazy and parasites” on other regions, pointing out that there was no reason to run away from the truth.

This was contained in a statement on Wednesday by the ACF National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Anthony Sani.

It, however, said that the people of the Niger Delta were responsible for the economic woes of the North, having raided the people of the Middle Belt who were part of the North as slaves for the whites during the colonial days.

The forum also flayed the Senate President, David Mark, over his comment that the organisation consisted of failed politicians who were in the habit of imposing their views on northerners.

Apparently referring to the controversy surrounding the victory of the Senate President at the election petitions tribunal, ACF said, “Winning election is one thing and earning the honour is another.”

The ACF further welcomed the assertion by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, on the pervasive poverty and illiteracy in the North, urging him to match his expression of concern with positive actions in the area of employment according to Federal Character, as a way of reducing the problems.

Meanwhile, the Northern Democratic Coalition on Wednesday condemned the First Northern Agricultural Summit that just ended in Kaduna, describing it as‘fraud.’

In a statement entitled, “Fraudulent Northern Agricultural Summit,” and jointly signed by its Chairman, Alhaji Abdulmumuni Al-Basir, and Secretary, Elisha Kura, the group condemned the 19 northern governors over what it described as ”another jamboree” aimed at fleecing the people of their money.

The group said, “This is another fraud of the century because it has been confirmed that the governors of the 19 northern states, banks and individuals contributed N3.6bn to organise the summit.

“This is an amount large enough to take care of a large number of the poverty-stricken people of the North. Clearly, this is an agenda of some self-styled leaders of the North to further enrich themselves to the detriment of the less privileged.”

ABIA State Governor Theodore Orji has declared that Rivers State reaps from oil wells that belonged to his state.

The development, Orji said, was enabled by the artificial boundaries created by previous verification committee. He, therefore, called on the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to address the matter.

The governor spoke on Monday when members of the RMAFC Gas Monitoring Committee (GMC) visited him in Umuahia.

Orji lamented that while other states of the Niger Delta control their oil wells and reap the full benefits of the 13 per cent derivation, Abia had been denied its share such that 'our derivation till date is being shared 50-50 with Rivers State."

Describing the GMC as made up of experts that can verify his claims and resolve the issue, Orji told the panel led by Emmanuel Nsa that "the resolution of the dispute will pave way for the effective verification of Abia State gas reserve because those 22 oil wells produce associated gas."

According to him, between December 2007 and March 2008, Abia submitted two memoranda to President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua and the Chairman of RMAFC on the anomalies of the 2006 verification exercise and the delay in its implementation. He said that he was also aware that the President directed the RMAFC to resolve the issue, hence he awaited the agency's implementation of the presidential order.

Orji said: "I wish to state here without equivocation that the boundary dispute involving Abia State oil wells is purely artificial. It exists only in the offices at Abuja. We know what belongs to us and that it has never been in dispute.

"One action of the authorities which has greatly hindered our development is the classification of the oil wells in the entire Old Imo State as 'undecided' while those that were decided were ceded to Rivers State. We have been fighting this injustice for a long time and I am glad they are beginning to listen to us."

At the onset, the location of an oil wells in any part of the country, he said, was not associated with any boundary dispute nor unhealthy politicking because oil was in the exclusive list in the Nigerian Constitution and does not attract any derivation payment to the host region or state.

Earlier, Nsa said that his team was in the state to verify the production levels, type of gas produced, quantities of associated and non-associated gas as well as its contribution to the Federation Account.

He added that this afford the GMC the opportunity to ensure justice, equity and fairness to all beneficiary states in respect of the 13 per cent derivation of the gas produced by them as directed by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court in 2002 in the suit involving Attorney-General of Abia State and 35 Ors on Resource Control, directed that revenues from gas be separated from that of crude oil in the Federation Account.

Teenager donates 10,000 pairs of shoes to charity

A15-year-old Nigerian student in Philadelphia, USA, Miss Chierika Ukogu, yesterday donated 10,000 pairs of shoes to the needy in Abuja and Ukpor, in Anambra State.



About 7,000 of the shoes were sent to the motherless homes in and around the Federal Capital Territory, while the remaining 3,000 would be distributed to the indigents in Ukpor and its environ.

Briefing the press in Abuja on how she came about the project, Ukogu said she conceived the idea to help the needy when she visited her home town, Ukpor, Nnewi South of Anambra State, five years ago.

“About five years ago, I travelled to Nigeria and I went to Ukpor, my home town. I noticed a lot of children walking around with no shoes in this modern day. I know that if you walk about with no shoes, you are more prone to parasites, bacteria, diseases and wounds.

I was touched and made up my mind to help. The opportunity came last year when I was invited to a business camp in the USA where I wrote several articles on the plights of Nigerian indigent children and my experience when I travelled to Ukpor," she explained.

Ukogu, a student of Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Philadelphia, said her articles and proposal at the camp attracted publications in several USA based journals.

``After the publications, I was able to collect over 10,000 flip flops (shoes) from donors through my school and my father volunteered a section of his garage where they were stored.

``The donations have been coming in their thousands because of the willingness of the people to help me in my plight,'' she said.

To make the project formal and to facilitate the shipment of the shoes to Nigeria, Ukogu said that she formed a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) duly registered in the USA, known as Flip Flops for Africa (FFFA).

``The first batch of the 10,000 shoes was shipped in to the country just a week ago, with the financial assistance of my parents, Mr and Mrs Joe Ukogu,'' she said.

On her challenges, Ukogu said that shipping the consignment to Nigeria and within Nigeria``was a real hazzle'' particularly getting people to understand the objective of the shoes.

The mother, Mrs Frances, said it was difficult transporting the shoes from Lagos to Abuja.

``The American side has been taking care of, the major problem is here in Nigeria because, yesterday, when I was to transport the consignment from Lagos to Abuja it was a big problem.

``I had to pay extra money because the security agents and the bus drivers were telling me the goods were contrabands even when I tried to explain to them that they were for donation for charity,'' she said.

The teenager called on the Nigeria government and other charity organisations to collaborate and support her for effective shipping and distribution of the shoes to the needy in Nigeria.

She also said that she was hoping to extend the gesture beyond Nigeria and to all African countries who are in need of the help.

``My goal is to collect and distribute over one million shoes in a year.This is achievable because the shoes keep on coming in by donors.

``Besides, I am making plans to partner with multinational shoe manufacturers in the developed countries for support,'' she said.

A member of the House of Representatives from Ukogu's constituency, Hon. Cyril Maduabun (PDP Anambra), who was at the occasion commended the efforts of the teenager.

Maduabun, the House Chairman, Public Petitions Committee said, ``It is a worthy initiative from a young girl like her and we will encourage and support her to continue.

``The House has just set up a Committee on NGO and things like this, we will do everything we can to assist her''.

Govt scraps state first lady status

APPARENTLY reacting to reported feuds in the homesteads of some polygamous governors over the position of first lady, the Federal Government may have taken steps to outlaw the post at the state level, even as it is unknown to the nation's statute books.

The government, in a two-page letter from the Federal Ministry of Information addressed to all the 36 state governors through their commissioners for information, described the post at the state level as unconstitutional.

Confirming the development yesterday in Gusau, Zamfara State Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Danmaliki, who spoke through the state Director of Information, Ibrahim Na'ayi Salihu, said his ministry had already received the letter and concerned authorities were notified about the development.

"I am please to inform you that we have received a circular from the Federal Ministry of Information on banning wives of the state governors from addressing themselves as first lady. According to the circular, only the wife of Mr. President will henceforth be addressed as First Lady," Na'ayi stated.

However, Na'ayi declined to make copies of the letter available to reporters, saying: "You can quote me but I cannot give you the letter."

Abuja Tragedy: 100 trapped in collapsed shopping plaza

A four-storey shopping complex on Tuesday in Abuja collapsed with over 100 people trapped in the debris with unconfirmed number of dead people.

The incident occured at about 2.00 p.m. At the time of the incident, construction workers were said to be working on some parts of the building. The building, situated at Utako district of Abuja which was housing some shops and other business outfits was allegedly overcrowded with peThe incident, recorded many casualties including women, especially those selling foods and water to workers at the complex which was on the fourth floor of the building. It was gathered that the building started experiencing some vibration on Monday following the additional work going on the fourth floor of the building but emergency reinforcement work that was quickly started to remedy the situation could not prevent the building from collapsing.



The Nigerian Tribune learnt that the workers had complained that the building was vibrating while workers and other people using the building were going in and out but the before any concrete measure could be put in place, the building caved in.



A staff of Abuja Municipal Management Agency disclosed to the Nigerian Tribune on condition of anonymity that the collapsed plaza was marked for demolition last year but their demolition sign was ignored.



He said instead of the place being sealed up nothing was done because the owner was regarded as untouchable. The former Managing Director of the agency, Miss Jumai Kwanachie, however, refused to speak on the matter. It was during her tenure that the approval for the building was given by the Federal Capital Territory administration headed by Mallam Nasir el-Rufai.



The shopping plaza which is located along Solomon Lar Way in Jabi area of Abuja started in 2007 and is nearing completion. It was equally gathered that after the collapse of the building, it took over three hours before rescue teams from the Federal Road Safety Commission, Civil Defence Corps and the Police could arrive the scene of the incident which is opposite one of the major hotels in Abuja and less than 400 metres away from the popular Julius Berger Junction and main yard of the construction firm.
