Tinubu: I never said I spent N35bn on Buhari’s elections

Dyepkazah Shibayan
JUNE 26, 2020 6:34 PM

Bola Tinubu, a national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has denied saying he spent N35 billion on the elections of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 and 2019.

A report had quoted Tinubu as expressing regrets that he spent heavily on the president.

The report said while having a discussion with Bisi Akande, former interim chairman of the APC, on the dissolution of the national working committee of the ruling party, Tinubu accused the president of betraying him.

But in a statement Tunde Rahman, his spokesman, issued on his behalf, the APC national leader dismissed the claims.

“The authors of the libelous report claimed Asiwaju made the allegation in a discussion with former APC Interim Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande,” the statement read.

“Firstly, no one person elected President Buhari. He was elected by the generality of Nigerian electorate. Asiwaju Tinubu would not arrogate you himself the commendable decision taken by the people. Also, that outlandish claim only existed in the imagination of the authors of the story.

“Asiwaju rooted for President Buhari’s election and in 2015 and re-election in 2019 along with other right-thinking political leaders and teeming members of APC and Nigerians across the country.

“He has no reason to regret the rightful decision or describe President Buhari as ‘ungrateful’. He remains steadfast in his support for the president and the programmes and policies of his administration as he has always been.

“Nothing has occurred to warrant any change of heart.”

The statement said since reference was made to how Akinwunmi Ambode, a former governor of Lagos, could not secure another term, it is possible that those behind the report “betrayed where they came from”.

“The report linked recent developments in APC to the fate suffered by former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode in the 2019 governorship race in Lagos State, perhaps betraying where the authors were coming from,” the statement read.

“Asiwaju has put the events of 2019 behind him. He has moved on. Indeed, Lagos has moved on. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is providing good, purposeful and responsible leadership. Lagosian are enjoying the fruits of good governance under the able and dynamic governor Sanwo-Olu.

“Asiwaju and governor Sanwo-Olu have the best of relationships, contrary to the impression the report sought to create.”

FG to begin enrolment of third batch of N-Power next week
June 19, 2020

By Faith Yahaya, Abuja

Online portal to open for application on June 26, 2020

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development has said that it will commence the enrolment of the third batch of N-Power beneficiaries next week.

According to the ministry, the decision to enrol the third batch of the scheme was made following consultations and a review of the submissions on the reform of the programme for greater efficiency.

It also explained that the enrolment will provide opportunities for more Nigerian youths to access the programme, in furtherance of the President’s vision of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty.

The ministry said the current enrollees of the scheme (Batch A) will exit June 30, 2020 while (Batch B) will exit the programme on July 31, 2020.

This is contained in a statement in Abuja on Friday by the Deputy Director Information of the ministry, Rhoda Iliya.

According to the Minister, Sadiya Farouq, “We have commenced the transitioning of beneficiaries from Batches A and B into government entrepreneurship schemes and engaging private sector bodies to absorb some of the beneficiaries after the completion of psychometric assessment to determine competency and placement into various opportunities.

“The Federal government is committed to the continuation and expansion and as such will now begin enrolment and onboarding of a new Batch of beneficiaries. Skills acquisition for entrepreneurship and job creation are critical for an economy that will require a boost post-COVID-19 and we are gearing up proactively for the challenge.”

On the mode of application, the ministry said: “Applications will be conducted using a hybrid system of enrolment to ensure that all Nigerians are given an opportunity to participate. As a Ministry that caters for the vulnerable, we will also make special considerations for Persons living with disabilities.

“The online portal would be open to receive applications from noon on June 26, 2020 and will provide a level playing field for all applicants.

“As part of the Ministry’s reforms to make the programme more efficient, all applicants must supply their Bank Verification Number (BVN) in their application to ensure a streamlined and transparent selection process.”

The ministry further explained that once applications are submitted, it will review submissions and publish a list of successful applicants.

It also stated that comprehensive details for the new batch will be announced in the coming weeks.

It however noted that past beneficiaries will not be eligible to participate in the application process.

The N-Power Programme was inaugurated by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2016 under the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP) with the mandate of lifting citizens out of poverty through capacity building, investment, and direct support.

The programme has enrolled 500,000 beneficiaries so far with 200,000 from Batch A which started in September 2016 and 300,000 from Batch B which kicked off in August 2018.

The beneficiaries were supposed to spend not less than 24 months on the programme and were spread across the key industries targeted by the programme; agriculture, health, education, and tax.

President MBuhari has approved the recommendation of the Hon. Minister of Power , Engr S. Mamman for the Appointment of Dr. Nnaemeka Eweluka as the substantive MD/CEO for the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET).
The Minister of Power, Engr. Sale Mamman, has announced Dr. Nnaemeka Ewelukwa as the new Managing Director/CEO for the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading PLC (NBET).

Ewelukwa replaces Dr. Marilyn Amobi whose tenure elapses in July 2020.

A statement by the minister’s spokesman, Aaron Artimas, on Monday said, the new appointment was in furtherance of the reorganization and realignments in the Power Sector.

Until his appointment, Dr. Ewelukwa was the company’s General Counsel and Secretary.

“He is to succeed Dr. Marilyn Amobi, as substantive Managing Director/CEO, while the former MD is to handover and proceed on terminal leave with immediate effect.

“President Muhammadu Buhari had earlier approved the recommendation to this effect,” Engr. Mamman said in the statement.

Daily Trust reports that Engr. Mamman had in December 2019 directed that the erstwhile MD, Dr. Amobi stepped down over myriads of complaints.

The minister also raised a five man committee to investigate the complaints against Amobi that include overriding superior officers’ decisions.

Barely 24 hours after the directive was issued, NBET confirmed in a statement that Dr. Ewelukwa, a General Manager, and the pioneer General Counsel and Company Secretary at NBET took charge of the agencies’ operations.

Dr. Ewelukwa has been there at the establishment of NBET by the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) as a bulk electricity trader in the nascent electricity market.

Ewelukwa has been part of the executive management team at NBET and has over 20 years of professional experience spanning private practice, academia and currently, public service.

Prior to joining NBET, he served as a Technical Adviser on electricity regulatory and transaction issues with the Presidential Task Force on Power (PTFP) set up by the federal government to lead the implementation of the reform roadmap for the power sector.

He has led NBET’s negotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and the development of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs} at NBET, paving the way for billions of dollars in additional private sector investments in the electric power sector.

Dr Ewelukwa is also a co-author of three globally acclaimed handbooks on electricity transactions.

A qualified lawyer by training, Dr. Ewelukwa holds an undergraduate law degree from the University of Nigeria, a Master of Laws degree in International Business Law, from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE} and a PhD in Law from Queen Mary, University of London, with specialization on privatization and the legal reform of the Nigerian power sector.

He is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Exactly my thought. Europe long have a record of taking every opportunity to spy on and exploit African countries. Their resources and sources of revenue are fast on the decline. Just as the likes of Columbus and European elites convened to share African resources to themselves long before the colonial era, Africa is the new market and the reason why world leaders are fighting a cold war on our land, yet we can't even see it, but too naive and blinded to accept anything. As for the coming of Orange, I am not in a position to judge criticize anything. If their intentions turns our genuine (something rare with Europeans), then we have no problem, but bear in mind that whatever business Europeans bring to Africa is not an indication that they actually mean well for us.
We have all the resources and even good education, yet impoverished, so bad.
Exactly. Especially Telecoms business. What better way to spy on a country than that?
