@ skyblue
I just think a lot of people are just used to the way things have been done in nigeria for the past decades that WE DO NOT BELEIVE in any initiative of the government. This programmes is less that 7 days. In all project ramifications , it's tooooo early to call if a failed project. As skyblue stated above, there other initiatives to reduce road congestion. BRT is just one of the initiatives. |

Kobojunkie: LMAO!!!!! We are talking of lagos where people do not even have power at all or good roads and you are asking them to start "INCONVENIENCING" themselves in the name of going green LMAO!!!!
Abeg!!! Abeg please, let us be reasonable here. London has good roads and the reason why those people are willing to pay such fines is cause they have reached a stage where they feel it is needed. Lagos never even reach good road stage, talk less of imposing green standards on people. It is the right of every human being to choose to drive or not to drive. Government should not start FORCING people not to drive. It can however provide them with an alternative and as time goes on, the people of their own free will realize that the alternatives may actually pay them more than they driving themselves would. And from the initial post of this thread, it is clear that we are not there yet. Do you start penalizing people for using an amenity that they are long overdue?? I believe more focus should be placed on fixing the roads that these BRT buses and other vehicles plow and then as time goes by, people will realize and get to know that it may actually work better for them to take the bus. I live here in the United states and I am still not convinced to take public transportation. Hey!!! read my post very well. 1. I said the emphasis is NOT on green standards BUT on reducing the number of cars on lagos roads. 2. Imposing extra charges on wanting to drive to VI/ Ikoyi is NOT forcing people to drive but providing them with an expensive alternative, thereby reducing the number of cars on lagos road. 3. BRT roads are in good shape. I am sure you have not driven on BRT marked roads for over a year . It is easy to critisize from the US. The roads BRT are plying are in good shape 4. Like i said, The traffic in lagos ( Mainland to Island routes) is usually caused by 8-5 workers that drive their empty cars to the office, park and drive them back empty. If government should scrap BRT now, same people critisizing the scheme will shout blue murder. Why can't we solve our problems one at a time. If we can reduce the nmber of cars by half , the effect will be felt on spheres of lagosians lives. ( Family, health, etc) One step at a time. |

Kobojunkie: 1) Why would Lagosians leave the cars at home?? Even here in the city, with all the mass transit and taxis, people still drive. Check out NY with it's metro system and all. I think maybe fixing all the roads will greatly move things forward cause I suspect that the reason why the hold ups are bad is cause many of the roads still need to be fixed and fast. Kobojunkie: 2) Even without a dedicated lane, the government should also try to enforce traffic laws as way to help move traffic along faster. I have not seen the buses myself but I have seen the lagos roads and dealt with lagos traffic and I know their hope, just that a few more effort needed to clean things up for better. People drive by choice in developed world not that they don't have a choice. Also about one in five guys have cars. We are not talking about green effect on the climate here but to reduce the VOLUME of cars in lagos. There are some zones in london that you pay to enter because of the perculiar nature of london's land mass. Besides if all the roads in lagos are in perfect condition, there would still be traffic congestion due to the volumeof cars plying the roads, which also tranlate to the pressure on the roads |

yimiton: Lagos BRT was launched yesterday, 17th March, 2008 after so much adverts on it's proposed efficiency and effectiveness. People were encouraged to leave their private cars and join BRT to avoid traffic and holdups. I thought it was a nice idea and since I was running a bit late for work today, I decided to try it out. It would be an understatement if I said I was disappointed. It all started when I had to stand on the queue for over a 1hr 30 mins before I eventually got in. The bus was so overfilled that people were standing like the popular 'molue' in Lagos, the fares where high and primary as well secondary school children with uniform where made to pay the same expensive fares and stand all through the journey. It will surprise you to know that Ojota to Maryland was charged N50 as well as Ojota to Fadeyi and Ojota to TBS was N100. The worse thing is that we still got held up in hold ups where there were no BRT lanes and I'd never been as late to the office as I was today. I think this whole idea is a big slap to the general public, the government has taken the tax payers' money, invested it in a business that will probably be beneficial to a few people instead of the masses and promised us an Eldorado.
I think the BRT fares should be cheaper than privately owned vehicles, there should be different fares for people who do not take it from one initial terminus to the other; children of school age *especially those wearing uniforms* should not be made to pay; the staff members should be properly trained on how to manage crowd and make people queue. The promise of BRT that they'll be available every five minutes should be implemented to the letter. Alternatively, the BRT idea should be scraped and Train system should be introduced.
Have you taken BRT, if yes, please share your experience, suggestions and ideas and remember to take the poll. @ poster like you rightly said the Effectiveness and efficiency of the scheme willbe realised when 1. lagosians leave their cars at home 2. Stop driving on CLEARLY marked bus lanes. It is so easy for us to condem governmnet policies butlet us ask oursleve "are we doing our own part ?". If someone is driving on bus lanes 200 fasholas can't do anything about it. In the UK you dare not drive on bus lanes during a certain time of certain dasy, hence public buses have unhindered traffic. Also , I have on more than 20 times stood on buses in the UK. The idea of entering a bus is to get to your destination and just imagine that people are not blocking the bus lanes , a distance from Anthony to TBS will be less than 30 minutes. I don't like the bit of you saying govt should scrap BRT and start train. Some people will also complain. Don;t forget that some people's home will be demolished for the new rail tracks and ofcourse you expect govt to abandon that too. For me, i think the nest step the govt should take now is to encourage companies to use staff buses , then move to the next level of selling week-day ( VI/IKOYI ) car licences for those that want to drive to the island. This will discourage peope from taking their cars. Those that cause traffic in lagos are the 8am - 5pm workers that just take their empty cars to the office , park, then bring them back empty by 5 or 6 . |

It hard to be committed to this country actually. Sometimes i sit down i look at what nigeria has done for me and i find it out to name one thing. From my nursery school to youth service to working life ---- Nothing!!!!. It is normal in a transactional environment for people to be give back to "who" gave to them.
Most people are patriotic because we do not have any other country. All I can advice is that we strive to make nigeria give so much to our children or else the resentment will continue for a long time to come. |

How experienced was westerhof when he became nigeria's coach? how old was he? I think he just counting on one of our problems to get himself noticed ( white skin supremacy) For his information: 1. Keshi qualified a below average team for the world cup 2. Siasia took an average Nigerian team to the finals of the U-23 world cup( this is the stage before the world cup) |

Sky Blue: People keep using Kenya as an example, why is there violence in Kenya? Is it not because of a perceived injustice? It is only in Nigeria that reasoning will be upside down. This has nothing to do with putting someone else in Power and this is so much bigger then Yaradua, they couldn't just have asked for a re-run? When i hear the word democracy tagged to Nigeria i can't help but laugh.
But for real though, I seriously do think that since the majority seem to be so willing to settle with this, we should just stop deceiving ourselves and move to stop holding elections in Nigeria. Why do we spend billions and waste time on elections if there is no point? The assembly should seriously consider this, it would save us money in the long run. OBJ or IBB or Adedibu can just select our next leader in 4 years time instead of putting Nigerians through the farce and insult called Nigerian (magic) elections. Just remeber what happened between BUSH and Al gore, 8 years ago. There is something called National interest. No doubt i welcome this judgement, it is something i have always wished for because i know the next election will be better |
