Despite decades of sanctions, Iran has succeeded in developing its missile arsenal, which is larger than that of any other Middle Eastern country including Israel, a Pentagon study said Tuesday. "Iran has an extensive missile development program, and the size and sophistication of its missile force continues to grow despite decades of counterproliferation efforts aimed at curbing its advancement," the Defense Intelligence Agency said. The study said Iran considered missiles to be a strategic necessity due to the limitations of its air force, which still has some US planes ordered by the pro-Western shah, who was toppled in 1979. "Lacking a modern air force, Iran has embraced ballistic missiles as a long-range strike capability to dissuade its adversaries in the region -- particularly the United States, Israel and Saudi Arabia -- from attacking Iran," the report said. Iran has "the largest missile force in the Middle East," the report said. A US intelligence official said on condition of anonymity that the assessment included Israel. The report said that Iran had developed a series of missiles that could strike at a distance of 1,250 miles (2,000 kilometers) -- capable of reaching Israel or Saudi Arabia. Iran in 2017 showcased the 1,250-mile-range Khoramshahr missile, which can carry multiple warheads. The Pentagon study, in line with a tweet at the time by President Donald Trump, said the missile appeared to use technology from North Korea. But the Pentagon study said that Iran was spending slightly less on its military, with $20.7 billion budgeted in 2017. Iran's economy has come under growing pressure since Trump last year withdrew from a denuclearization accord and reimposed sweeping sanctions. Christian Saunders, an expert on Iran at the Defense Intelligence Agency, warned of the impact if an arms embargo is lifted on Iran next year. "These restrictions are set to expire in October 2020, providing Tehran an opportunity to acquire some advanced capabilities that have been beyond its reach for decades," Saunders told reporters. The Islamic republic has faced UN-mandated sanctions on importing most weapons since 2006, but the embargo is set to expire five years after implementation of the nuclear deal. The accord, which Iran reached in 2015 with former president Barack Obama's administration as well as Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia, is on life support after Trump left it and as Tehran takes steps to end compliance as a protest over continued sanctions. A US intelligence official expected Iran to concentrate on procuring fighter jets and battle tanks, with Russia and China the most likely suppliers. Iran argues that it must keep up its defenses, pointing to Western support for Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq war and Israel's undeclared nuclear program. KngGezy:Honestly i love your post. Xiaomites love to spoil brands They have spoiled that Infinix thread. I have seen so many complaints about Xiaomi here but if the same problem was posted on Infinix thread instead of them to try and give solution or let others who knows about it wade in they would start derailing the topic shouting infinix is crap this and that, in the end the poster won't get solution to his problem. Funny enough if an Infinix phone falls into water and the user came there to ask for solution these guys would start criticizing Infinix as if other phone brands are water proof. I have helped guys solve their problems here and i have tried my best on Infinix thread too. One thing i know is these manufacturers are trying be it Xiaomi, infinix or Oppo. It all boils down to what you want. Infinix does not make use of snapdragon like other manufacturers if you are a heavy gamer then go for Xiaomi, samsung and the rest. You don't have to blame Infinix for releasing Helio P22 when other manufacturers are using latest snapdragon version. It's like criticizing HP for producing a computer with Intel Celeron processor when there is Intel core i3, i5, i7. Celeron is only good for office work, desktop publishing while core i3, i5 and i7 are for gamers, programmers. And everybody cannot be a gamer or a programmer so it all boils down to what you intend to use the device for. I love your post. |

blackboy:China is ready to take its rightful position in that region. South Korea and China were both victims of Japan's aggression during WW2 and they share a common history. |
The defence ministers of South Korea and China have agreed to develop their security ties to ensure stability in north-east Asia, the latest indication that Washington’s long-standing alliances in the region are fraying. On the sidelines of regional security talks in Bangkok on Sunday, Jeong Kyeong-doo, the South Korean minister of defence, and his Chinese counterpart, Wei Fenghe, agreed to set up more military hotlines and to push ahead with a visit by Mr Jeong to China next year to “foster bilateral exchanges and cooperation in defence”, South Korea’s defence ministry said. Seoul’s announcement coincided with growing resentment at the $5 billion (£3.9bn) annual fee that Washington is demanding to keep 28,500 US troops in South Korea. That figure is a sharp increase from the $923 million that Seoul paid this year, which was an 8 per cent increase on the previous year. An editorial in Monday’s edition of The Korea Times warned that the security alliance between the two countries “may fall apart due to Washington’s blatantly excessive demands”. Mr Trump has previously threatened to withdraw US troops if his demands are not met, with the editorial accusing the president of regarding the Korea-US mutual defence treaty “as a property deal to make money”. The vast majority of Koreans agree, with a recent survey by the Korea Institute for National Reunification showing that 96 per cent of people are opposed to Seoul paying more for the US military presence. There is also irritation at the pressure that Washington is applying to the South to make Seoul sign an extension to a three-way agreement on sharing military information with the US and Japan. The General Security of Military Information Agreement is due to expire at midnight on November 23 and South Korea insists that it will only agree to an extension if Japan cancels restrictions on exports of chemicals critical to the South’s microchip industry. Japan is widely believed to have imposed the restrictions as the latest incident in its troubled relationship with South Korea, which includes the issue of compensation for labourers put to work during Japan’s colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula. The two nations' defence ministers held discussions with Mark Esper, the US defence secretary, at the weekend but hopes that a breakthrough might materialise came to nothing. Just days before an agreement designed to protect the allies from North Korean belligerence runs out, Tokyo and Seoul merely reiterated their long-held positions. The US demanded in July that Japan pay $8 billion a year to keep 54,000 US military personnel in the country, Foreign Policy reported late last week. Tokyo currently contributes $2 billion a year to US military costs in Japan. “This kind of demand, not only the exorbitant number, but the way it is being done, could trigger anti-Americanism”, Bruce Klinger, an analyst at the Heritage Foundation think tank, told Foreign Policy. “If you weaken alliances, and potentially decrease deterrence and US troop presence, that benefits North Korea, China and Russia, who see the potential for reduced US influence and support for our allies”. Daniel Pinkston, a professor of international relations at the Seoul campus of Troy University, was more blunt in his assessment. “It’s just extortion”, he told The Telegraph. “It’s little more than a mob boss going around and demanding protection money. The numbers that the US is demanding are politically impossible for Seoul and Tokyo to swallow and that is just fuelling resentment." India has made an advance payment of $800m for Russia's S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems, the head of Russian conglomerate Rostec, Sergey Chemezov, said. Chemezov told reporters on Monday that negotiations were under way and a contract with India will be completed in 2025. The development comes amid threats of US sanctions, but New Delhi has pinned its hopes on a waiver from Washington. India signed a $5bn deal to buy the long-range surface-to-air missile systems in October 2018 during a visit to New Delhi by Russian President Vladimir Putin. At the BRICS summit in Brazil on Thursday, Putin said the S-400 deliveries to India were going "according to plan". "This was very much on the cards. The United States has more or less signalled that it's ok with this project and it is not likely to invoke sanctions against India as a result of this," Ajai Shukla, an Indian defence analyst, told Al Jazeera. Moscow has long been the main supplier of military equipment to India - accounting for 62 percent of its total weapons imports during the last five years, according to the Stockholm Peace Research Institute. However, in recent years, New Delhi has inched closer to the US and Israel for weapons supply. The US has warned that India could face sanctions if it goes ahead with the S-400 deal, it has issued similar threats to Turkey over a planned purchase of the missile defence system. Under a US law, known as the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), the purchase of defence equipment from Russia can be subject to sanctions. However, the president can opt to issue a waiver. Shukla, the Indian analyst, said that despite concerns, the move is unlikely to negatively affect India's relations with the US, as it has Turkey's. "India has been buying arms from Russia for decades. It has only recently switched over to buying arms from America. "America is quite happy that it is selling a large number of arms to India and it realises that it cannot stop India from having a defence relationship with Russia because that is a historical pact," he said. "The India-Russia relationship is a very old and tested relationship." India's relations with the US have also been hit by trade frictions, with New Delhi imposing higher import tariffs on some US goods in retaliation for the US's refusal to exempt India from steel tariffs.
