Messi isn't Spanish. Messi is Argentine and Argentina National Team is either best or second best National side in South America every year since his career. Messi gets to play against national teams that are many leagues their junior, everyday, twice on Sunday. That was more than enough opportunity to statpad.

The gap between Argentina and any other National Team in South America is way way wide compared to Portugal, that has never been in the Top 3 teams of Europe all through Ronaldo's career. And Portugal are always surrounded by fellow European Teams with little gaps separating them.

Guatemala (3), Hong Kong (2) and Nicaragua (2) are not even South American farmers, but they still donated generously to Messi's largesse.
