I slid it across the desk, Slowly. Cautiously. Consciously. Praying no one would hear as my heart beat against my ribcage. The new girl was still bent double, tying the laces of her ‘cortina’ sandals. I slid the paper under her N.O.E.C. textbook and ran out of the classroom before she could notice. I hid under the stairs waiting for the world to come to an end. One part of me prayed she would not read it, The other part prayed she would read it quickly and spare me suspense. 10minutes… 20minutes…. 30minutes… No shouts! No angry crowd screaming for my head! Not a soul looking to find me in my hideout. I returned to class, to be a man and face the music. One step after the other, I walked nervously into Primary 5S. There she was! Talking to the teacher! I made a U-turn to dash out of the room! SEUNFUNMI! Mr. Biney, our Ghanaian teacher called out. The class suddenly went quiet as every attention turned to me. ‘Take her to the proprietor’s office’ he said in his characteristic harsh voice. I looked at the desk. The textbook was still there. I deduced that she had not seen it. I made up my mind to collect the book from her as if I wanted to check And quickly remove it from the textbook. ‘You forgot to pick your NOEC from the table’ I told her on the way out of the classroom. ‘It’s not mine’ she replied. Suddenly the world still as I paused. I ran back into the class to retrieve the book Alas! It was gone! I could almost say it disappeared. It was there a few seconds before. What happened? Suddenly my mind told me I was in a very deep trouble…….. (to be continued) Read more at http://deedeesblog.com/2016/04/11/childhood-naughtiness-the-case-of-the-love-letter/

Richard rented a house and moved in with his family. After paying rent for two years, his rent was increased from N400,000 to N500,000. He did not complain because he likes the house. The following year, he could not come up with the money and the agent was on his neck to make payment. His wife noticed what he was passing through and then decided to borrow the money for the husband. Richard was indeed very happy and paid the house rent. Later, he paid back the money to the wife. Two years later the rent was increased from N500,000 to N700,000 and he became upset. He pleaded with the agent to introduce him to the landlord of the property in order to beg for a reduction in the rent, the agent bluntly refused. Richard decided to investigate on his own only to discover that the house was actually owned by his wife. This revelation really shocked him and he was left reeling with so much anger and resentment. If you were Richard, what will you do? I am not surprised really as this has been the case in recent times. The world so much fraught with increased in gender equality and the continuous rise of the women folk wants to become ‘men’ in the society. Wives building houses with their husbands being unaware, buying cars, investing in so much and then the spouses are completely oblivious of all the heavy capital investments made by the wife. I will always appreciate a very enterprising and wealthy wife; she will provide the necessary balance needed for nuclear family sustenance. However, it would be completely unwise to embark on a mission of continuous investment with your other half being totally unaware. While it could be deemed that the lady would be termed a successful wife, it is also important that care should be taken when it comes to issues that could strain the relationship in a family. Believe me you, I would love my wife to acquire landed properties, ensure capital investments are being procured, but she should not do this behind my back. It is no big deal to me really whether my wife is wealthier or not (provided she is humble and not overly filled with too much pride that it gets into her head). What may be wrong is she doing all of these behind my back! The question I am going to ask is, why? If she acquires these in her own name, why would she not bother to inform me, infact I would have expected that she informs me before she acquires, but whichever way it works, she needs to inform before/after these acquisitions. A lot of women believe that for the sake of safety, to reduce resentment, and so that the husband would not think ‘she’ wants to take over as the head, she may decide to make all these acquisitions in secrecy. Although many women intends to make the husband aware of these later in life but what they did not really think about is the implications of these decisions if the husband eventually discover just like the case of Richard. Let me quickly point it out that while we go about ensuring acquisitions because we want to be wealthier and have investments, we should not allow these to strain the relationship we have built in the family. An issue like the one above destroys a family more than it brings together. When there is apparent lack of trust in a family, there would be stunted growth and development. We need to put the kids into consideration. What we do today is what they would understand as being right tomorrow. Men, continue to hold the forte as the man of the house by ensuring that the domestic responsibilities are being met. Women should always learn and understand that the husband is the head of the family; at least that’s what the law and our culture says. Ensure you invest having the love of your family at heart, do not keep things like this away from your husband, it destroys than it fosters. Carry your husband along in your decisions, your investments, and your projections. It is pretty essential. We decided to advise Richard to forgive his wife and move on, she has shown remorse and explained why she has been receiving the money from her husband, and we eventually understood that she had fixed all the money received in the husband’s name in a bank. www.deedeesblog.com |

I did not start it. Honestly I did not start it. She did. Sandra Ehihegbamen did. And they fueled it. Yes, my friends fueled it. Femi, Tunde, Idowu and Rasheed fueled it. They fueled it and the endgame was my undoing. She wiped the board while I was still writing, She cleaned off what the teacher wrote on the blackboard, I told her not to, that I was still writing, She only hissed and continued. I would not have reacted had my friends shut their mouths. I would not have raised my hands, Had her friends not looked at me like that, I threatened fire and brimstone, Promising to kill her if she did not stop wiping the board, She stood her ground and dared me to do my worst. My friends urged me on, Telling to stand my ground and show her I was the man. Her friends stood rock solid behind her, They encouraged her to give me a piece of her mind. Pride filled my heart, blinding my eyes, Ego blocked my thoughts, I pulled my belt to deal with her. Even while pulling the belt she dared me. Dared me to hit her and see hell. Her taunts fueled my fury, lending a hand to my resolve. Twack! Twack! The belt struck her, but not beyond that. She held on to the belt before I could go ahead. It was after feeling dazed that I realized she had slapped me. One minute I was holding up my belt, The next minute I was under her, taking so many blows that could pound yam to pulp. How it happened, till today I still wonder, It happened so fast, too fast, Even Jet-Li would have been envious. All I remembered was that her knees pinned my shoulders, Her buttocks rested flat on chest and her legs packed my hands tightly to my side. My face moved from side to side Yielding to the impact made by her hands on my face. The slaps came raining down in torrents, And I could not do anything to stop them. It took the timely intervention of the teacher, To extricate me from under her, But not before she had beaten ‘the hell’ out of me. My cheeks were swollen cheeks, My lips were bruised and one eye was swollen. I busted into tears as I explained my part to the teacher. I took a closer look at the girl who just beat me, And I knew I had bitten more than I could chew. Between my tears I threatened, cursed, raved and ranted, Puffing like a goofy toad. I promised her hell. I promised her moments of hurt and grief. She only had to pretend to come close And I once again took refuge in the teacher’s embrace. It took me another one week to summon the guts to return to class, Even then the taunts knew no end. I became ‘the boy who was beaten by a girl’. No one remembered that our class captain Was also once beaten by the same girl. My friends who led me into the fight nko? They vanished the moment Sandra began her fistful lessons, Leaving me to learn my lesson in a hard way, As for Sandra, I still await the say I would take my revenge. Or maybe I should just keep to my own and not get beaten again. Or what do you think? Have you heard of a case where he was beaten by a ‘she’. Oya shareyour stories too…… |

My friend shared this on facebook yesterday and it generated a lot of buzz online. So I decided to bring it to Nairaland to get feedback. See below: Please pause and answer this curious mind.... Bra! Who invented that contraption? I want to believe it was either a very busty lady or a man(let me not categorize his condition). I would love your thoughts on bra, who invented it and why. For me, I would survive without a Bra,m. |
Do you say yes to things only to keep people happy? Do you fear saying and doing what you actually want? I know how that feels. From a young age, I was the polite, good girl. I rarely rebelled. I wanted to keep everyone happy. I thought that if I was honest I’d be rejected. That those closest to me wouldn’t love me. I thought I’d end up alone. At friends’ houses, asked what I’d like to drink or eat, I would always respond with “Whatever’s easiest.” I never wanted to be a burden. At twenty-one I met my boyfriend’s parents. Dinner was fresh sardines complete with tiny bones. I was vegetarian and hated fish, yet I said nothing and ate away. I fought the urge to be sick. I followed each revolting bite with a gulp of water. I should have spoken up, but I feared disapproval. After college, the desire to keep everyone happy led me into jobs I thought people would approve of. By my mid-twenties I had a job in management. I was successful. But inside I was miserable. Living my life according to the word “should” was gruelling. When I finally stopped, I felt empty and unsure of who I was. One day it became too much. I didn’t want to get out of bed. Everything was an effort and I spent hours sobbing. I looked in the mirror. I was disgusted by my reflection. I’d roll my hand into a fist and hit myself around the head. I thought I deserved to suffer. I knew I needed help, so I reached out to a doctor. He put me on antidepressants and I started to talk to a counselor. After I started to understand my motivations and explored my values, I started to believe I was enough. I didn’t need to hide who I was to gain people’s approval. I started to feel less depressed. I still have my days when I worry what others think, but I don’t feel the urge to adjust who I am, or to follow paths that aren’t right for me. This process didn’t happen instantly, but looking back I see the steps I followed. 1. Start with the root. It’s tempting to ignore people pleasing. You feel in control. You feel comfortable . But until you start to examine the root of your behavior, it’s likely that you’ll continue to constantly want to please others. This comes at a cost to your own happiness. Instead, take some time to explore the motivations behind your people pleasing. How does it benefit you? What belief does it show that you hold about yourself? I believed that by not speaking up, people would love and accept me. This all stemmed from the root belief that to be accepted and loved I needed to be someone else. As a small child, there was a lot going on in my parents’ lives. They were loving and caring but they were young, new parents with a lot of financial pressure on their shoulders. Life was busy. I didn’t want to be another thing that they needed to worry about. If I was polite and kept everyone happy I thought this would create less stress for them. So that’s what I did. Over the years, it became an ingrained habit that showed up in all areas of my life. I associated being loved with people pleasing and the truth as rejection. 2. Ask yourself these two questions. Letting go of the belief that lies at the root of your people pleasing can seem impossible. It’s scary to step away from something you have held onto for so long. One way to make it easier is so examine your belief further. I find these two simple questions help: Can you absolutely know that it’s true? In Katie Byron’s The Work, she suggests we use this question to investigate our beliefs. When I first read this question, I struggled with it. My people pleasing was so ingrained that the belief that I needed to be someone else to be loved felt so real. Of course it was true. What helped me was to consider the word “absolutely.” It implied there was no room for doubt. So I searched my brain for examples that would 100 percent prove this belief. There weren’t any concrete examples. I realized I had created the belief myself. There was no way I could know that it was absolutely true. Is it helpful? We often pursue harmful behaviors and beliefs because we believe they offer us something. In reality, they drain us of time and energy. So ask yourself is my root belief helpful? Does it help me move further toward my life goals? When I asked myself these two questions, I realized that my belief was neither absolutely true nor helpful. This made it easier to let go and to move onto something new. 3. Get to know yourself. When your life has been full of people pleasing, it’s hard to know what to replace it with. It can be tempting to let the habit creep back in. To fill the space it left. I felt this way. At first, it was painful to confront the fear that perhaps I didn’t know who I was. It felt like I was moving closer to a trap door about to take a peek inside. What if there was only darkness? I fought the urge to run the other way. Instead, I slowly started to take note of my reactions to things. I let my intuition guide me. As I did I started to rediscover things about myself, things I had known but had remained hidden beneath the trap door. I remembered my love of helping and supporting people. My curiosity for different cultures. The draw toward acting and improvisation. I realized I would never be happy in my job, stuck behind my desk working with data rather than people. 4. Sow new seeds. Giving up people pleasing is challenging. It can seem overwhelming. Instead of thinking of it as planting acres of maize, think of it as sowing a seed. One small seed. That’s all. What’s one tiny thing you could do to take yourself away from people pleasing and closer to authenticity? Could you express your true opinion about something? Could you be honest that you don’t want to go to that social event? As you start to sew a new seed and nourish it with action, new shoots and roots will appear. Yes, you may feel guilty for being honest at first, but it will get easier. As you practice, the old root and belief will naturally start to wither. You’ll feel more assured and confident. — Constantly trying to please others is exhausting, particularly when it leads you to live a life based on what you think you should do rather than what you want to do. But taking small steps to understand this part of you can have dramatic effects on your life. Imagine not having to constantly adjust who you are to please others. Imagine feeling more confident in expressing who you are. Start with step one. It doesn’t mean you have to give up doing things for others. It does mean giving up a toxic habit. Adjust less to others. Listen more to yourself. www.deedeesblog.com |
