Unclaimed Dividends Hits N52 Billion, Reps Intervene By Goddy Egene, 23 April 2012 Unclaimed dividends in the Nigerian capital market stood at N52.2 billion as at December 31, 2011, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has said at the weekend. SEC made this disclosure while commending the positive move by the House of Representatives to tackle the challenge posed by unclaimed dividends in the market. The House had last Wednesday at a plenary session, passed a resolution mandating the House Committee on Capital Markets and Institutions "to investigate the high volume of unclaimed dividends in quoted companies in Nigeria and report to the House within four weeks." SEC hailed the resolution, which came about through a motion sponsored by one Akpan Micah Umoh. Umoh had in his motion, said the unclaimed dividends were gradually mounting up to over N40 billion. But SEC explained in a statement that the unclaimed dividends actually stood at N52.2 billion, saying that out of this figure, 84.7 per cent (N42.5 billion) was held by nine out of 23 registrars who submitted their returns. "This legislative attention to the intractable issue of unclaimed dividends is a positive development. It was out of concern for this unfortunate situation in which return on shareholders' investment by way of dividends is perennially locked in the unclaimed dividends saga that as far back as in 2002, the SEC sponsored a bill in the National Assembly for an act of parliament which will set up the 'Unclaimed Dividend Trust Fund'. "This fund and the Act of Parliament which set it up were intended to drastically reduce or completely eliminate the incidence of unclaimed dividend by providing alternative domicile for funds deriving from unclaimed dividends to what was stipulated in Section 382(1) of the Companies and Allied Matters Act," SEC said. That section of CAMA stated that: 'Where dividends are returned to the company unclaimed, the company shall send a list of the names of the persons entitled with the notice of the AGM to the members. After the expiration of three months of the notice mentioned in 382(1), the company may invest the unclaimed dividends in an investment outside the company. No interest shall accrue on the dividend against the company.' However, the apex regulator of the capital explained that if passed into law, the 'Unclaimed Dividend Bill' would have removed the point of domicile for unclaimed dividends from their originating companies to another party managed Trust Fund and removed the incentive which feeds the collusion between certain players in the market to frustrate shareholder access to dividend accruals on their investment. The commission noted that if diligently prosecuted, the investigation by committee may well hold the key to unlocking the challenge posed to the Nigerian capital markets and investor public by this phenomenon, which contributes to the erosion of confidence in the market by denying investors their rightful returns on investment. SEC declared: "Also deserving of urgent legislative attention is Section 385 of CAMA which provides that the right of a shareholder to sue for dividends subsists only for 12 years beyond which such action becomes statute barred. This deserves review. "The establishment of an Unclaimed Dividend Trust Fund will cure this defect by making it possible for shareholders to recover their dividends however long this may take. Certainly, a more proactive legislative oversight will complement the efforts which the SEC has made and sustained against unclaimed dividends over the years," the body added. The big poser is 'Are these really unclaimed divideds, UNSENT dividends or a combination of both?' I will share my experience and views after some comments. |

The single most revealing sign of a cheating partner? If you really know your partner, LISTEN TO YOUR GUT! An intuition (gut feeling) that something is not right usually is a sign you may have a cheating problem. “When in doubt check them out.” Some common signs include; 1. Paying extra attention to physical looks and clothes. 2. Being more secretive with phone. May switch off, hide or speak in vague manners on the phone at times. The body language too (it is difficult to mask that one while speking with the 3Rd party) 3. Sometimes may even try to be extra nice to you, to divert ur suspicion. 4.The number of the 3rd party may not be sved, but if u know how u can see frequent communication with d person. 5. May start coplaing about small things. 6. Will always want to know ur to movement be sure u not going happen on them. So on and so forth, but if u really KNOW your partner you will know when the behavioural pattern has changed, if u watch closely enough , excercise patience and not jump d gun. You will know the truth. And the TRUTH will set you free. |
The question now is which of these ladies needs a man more urgently? |
Easy Now ! One thing at a time. You have not graduated yet and you are worried about getting a job and all that. Get the degree and then you can worry about a job and or what next to do? DO NOT MISS THIS GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY. You may never get another chance. |
I thought this question was meant for the ladies in the house, judging from the tone and context. Well, since the guys have hijacked it, might as well put in a word or two. Cheating in all its forms and ramifications has a negative connotation. I guess there is nothing wrong in secretly admiring someone you find attractive. But going the whole hog emotionally or physically, is a different ball game and can lead to dire consequences. If you really care for that special one in your life, my advise will be: DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT! Some are of the opinion that if you are not married, it is Ok. But then, what is the assurance that marriage will change you for the better. I mean, if you do it out of wedlock, there is every likelihood that you will go on in marriage. If you are not satisfied, quit and move on.The havoc that follows such acts far outweigh the momentarily thrills. That is, if you really care for the one you are with. In all, I guess it's a matter of conscience. If you feel you can handle any and every thing that comes out of it then, , that is your decision. If you can't take it, Don't give it. Cos, ANYTHING can happen. |
@ Rokiatu; I would if I could my Dear. I enjoy discussing matters of the heart. But I hardly have the time to indulge my self. LOL. |
I guess this is a dicey one. However, if the physical cheating is a one night stand and probably done on the spur of the moment, I think it will be easier to deal with than the emotional cheating. The problem with emotional cheating is that you see the signs and may not be able to prove anything till it goes GBAM right before your eyes. This can be devastating cause it can keep u wondering where you went wrong.Especially when you know the third party involved. Both are bad and are better kept off any serious relationship.Never underestimate the power of imagination when these kind of things are involved. Have you seen the movie ' Eyes wide shut'? Just to drive home my points. |

U must b talking about bottom. Abi? We all know them. Don't we? |
Ma Gee. I no envy u at all. I am in the industry and know what it feels like to have your job on the line. However my adice; 1. Take time to pray over the whole thing. 2. Decide on what you really want to do here. 3. Act by engaging her in a soul to soul discussion and let her know your mind. 4. Accept the outcome in Good faith. Whichever way it goes. But If were in your shoes and I am most certain that I do not want her. I will be very nice to her. Get to know more about her life, by sharing as much info as is safe and possible. Assure her that you adore her too, but the office enironment makes it complicated for u, as people are bound to suspect with time. Make her realize that there are more to get from true friendship than sexual acts. The Lord on you side. It can be a WIN WIN. GOOD LUCK, BRO!!! |
CBN Unveils Four Pillars of Banking Reforms This Day Front Page The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has unveiled its blueprint for the reform of the banking sector, which is built on four pillars. The CBN Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, announced the blueprint during his pre-convocation lecture at the 28th Convocation of the Bayero University, Kano, at the weekend. The four pillars of the reforms are: enhancing the quality of banks; establishing financial stability; enabling healthy financial sector evolution and ensuring that the financial sector contributes to the real economy. Sanusi also clarified a newspaper report which quoted him as saying the rescued banks would have to pay back the bailout loans by May this year. The CBN, he said, has not given any bank a deadline to repay the intervention funds and "it would be unreasonable to do so". The exposure was taken in the first place to address a solvency problem caused by huge levels of provisioning that eroded the capital of banks caused by non-performing loans and bubble capital. I doff my hat for the Master, Sanusi, sorry Mallam Sanusi. I told you guys to give him time. After which he can then be assessed. LOL |
Hello All, Pls I am having a challenge with my laptop. A HP Pavilion. Each time I try to boot and start using the system, I get this message on my screen; (-- Windows software protection An unauthorized change was made to windows. Windows has discovered a change that will result in limited Window functionality.) This message persits and I can not view my desktop any more. But If I boot in safe mode, I can see my desktop. Pls your urgent assistance will be appreciated. |
BEACAUSE I AM INVOLVED. One challenge we have in this country is taking side based on sentiments instead of facts and convictions. A few months back I advocated for caution on the issue of CBN and the Banks. I said we should give it 12months then decide if CBN has done well or not. This is only the beginning. By the time the effects tickle down, even a goat will know the truth, even he refuses to admit it. Our people say that you can only tell a blind man that the soup does not have enough oil but, definitely, not salt. His taste buds will certainly guide him in that area. For the avoidance of doubt the issue under discussion is manner of approach and not personality. That is, if you get what I mean. |
Examine your conscience, woman!!! Do u have a man in your life? If yes, why this excitement for another guy who may have someone else in his life? However if you are certain that the coast is clear, you can plunge. As the saying goes, there is no harm in trial. You can start by thanking him for a job well done. Follow up with an avid interest in his profession and request for a time to talk about it. LOL and Best of luck. |
CANDID ADVICE. 1.Take some time off everything. 2. Pray over this and ask for God to guide your decisions. 3. Take the bold step and decide. Once you have taken your decision, there is no going back. The bridge must be burnt and bombed. If your quite certain that you do not want your former girl. TELL HER! Let her know that no amount of threat will make you take her back. Marriage is by agreement , NOT by force. Me think she is only blackmailing you. After trying her luck else where and failing. She now wants to trick you into marriage. The decision is yours my brother. Best of Luck. Remember to send us the wedding IV. |
Ma Dear Lady, U may have, heard it all. seen it all and even done it all. But on this one, I think that there r some pertinent questions u need to ask urself b4b proceeding . 1. Y do you want this guy to notice you? - So that he can be your friend? So that you can go to bed with him, or just because that is what u think every other gal in school wants? 2. After he has NOTICED you, what next? 3. Assuming you want something steady with him, how can you manage the stress of other Notice seekers, contenders and pretenders alike? 4. How sure r u that u are not inviting a broken heart by this? I mean, with it worth the stress after all. If after searching your mind on these posers you still want to go on, then the solution is simple. B BOLD. Corner him, anytime he is alone and express your feelings. As sincerely as possible. If the guys can do it, the ladies can too. After what a man can do, a woman , You said it!!! HAPPY TOASTING |
When I first saw ur pix in ur profile here, I knew u were special. But never in ma dream did think u were this creative. Pls pour it out and never ,ever bottle up the talent.Am I impressed! GO GURL!!!!!!!!!!! |
I got a handsome ROI on a little sum I invested a few weeks back. If u think 15% flat/monthly with principal repayment on the 3rd month suits u. Ring me up on 08037000425. It is clean, a bit risky. But I am genuine and verifiable. U can also monitor from anywhere. However I will not like to take much at the onset. 500grand on starting. If u r convinced u can increase l8a. Best regards. By 15% flat, I mean 15 k for every 100k every month. In 3 months, 100k will b returned with interest of 45k. But u get 15 k interest paid to ur account every month. regards. |
MICHELIN89, You are the woman. That is how a decent woman should feel about her body. VDU the call it? Visible undies line. That the oyibo sees as a distaste, Now our people are celebrating NO undies. My God!!! Go Girl. And help us educate other ladies on better ways to dress, |
This is a rather serious issue, but some of us would joke about it. It is unfortunate but each time I see it I feel something is going seriously wrong in our society. I can not imagine my sisters leaving the house in such rubbish. I wonder if those girls come from their parents' homes. I saw one today, she was coming down from a taxi we werer in. Half her ass was showing and very dark too. I found the site repulsive. The elderly lady sitting beside me clapped her hand in shock, but said nothing. At the rate we are going, Well, May God help us. Any time I see anyone close to me in such clothes, I revolt and complain seriously. |
Caution, my people. C-A-U-T-I-O-N-U. That is what I advocate here. If You ask me I will say. Let us give this people time to come out fully. No matter how we argue it, me thinks some hasty decisions were taken by people who should know better. Some time in the past, some knowledgeable people asked for some support measures to assist the capital market and cusion the effect of the economic melt down in the country. This was turned down. Today, N620B is being injected to cover up shortfalls partly created by deals in the Capital market. MERICINE AFTA DET!!! As for take over or sell of banks. The banks are as good as sold. At the prize some of the shares are going, one only needs the right amount of funds and the necesary mechanism to get hold of the ownership. Shareholders are dumping their shares like hot coal. As for who these banks are being packaged for, I do not really care provided they come out better and stronger with Minimal pain to the stakeholders and staff. As someone pointed out earlier here. The apex bank is giving an ironical situation by punishing the banks for giving out loans. To salvage the situation, they are doing the same thing the are punishing people for. How are they so sure that these banks will pay back? As for the government running these banks in an event of default. A huge laugh. Infact, the moment I hear they are taking over any of the banks am pulling any N1 I have there. We all know how good they are managing things. The Federal roads, that reminds me, my girl is sitting in a bus practically packed along Ore High Way- (time 1.45 am) She left the East by 8 Am yesterday for a test in Lagos. How about NITEL, PHCN and I believe you can name the rest. Caution, my people, caution. |
Someday we will arrive. But for now me personally thinks that taking hasty and sweeping decisions on certain issues that affects us all is not going to help us. |
