The new head of Nigeria’s stock market regulator is encountering “subtle and aggressive” resistance to efforts to root out brokers whose alleged abuses contributed to a $50bn crash that brought the financial sector close to collapse.

Arunma Oteh, who took over at the Securities and Exchange Commission in January, is battling to impose tougher oversight and increased disclosure to restore confidence in what was once viewed as a prime frontier market.

But some financiers who stand to lose lucrative trading licences are said to be applying pressure to thwart an SEC investigation aimed at establishing whether brokers misused investors’ funds and are in effect insolvent. Some financiers were seeking to use close ties to politicians to stall the investigation, suppress its findings or undermine Ms Oteh, allies said.

“These people are determined to undermine Arunma and to make sure that she stops,” said one Nigerian financier close to the SEC boss.

Some reformers fear such a blocking campaign could hamper Ms Oteh’s plans to name and shame some of Nigeria’s 300 brokers. One foreign banker said the brokers had a “tremendously strong lobby”.

If a working class Englishman saw a bloke drive past in a Rolls-Royce, he'd say to himself "Come the social revolution and we'll take that away from you, mate". Whereas if his American counterpart saw a bloke drive past in a Cadillac he'd say "One day I'm going to own one of those". To my way of thinking the first attitude is wrong. The latter is right.
or maybe the first one is showing signs of a caring society, where people who pollute the environment are taxed to death grin and the second one is showing signs of perpetual bank debtor grin

Yes the government should tackle corruption and also focus on education
But the Employers, who will be making use of these resources should also DEMAN FROM the government that the curriculem and emphasis on theory should be changed. They keep complaining about the quality of graduate without
doing anything to change the fundamemntals, they only donate money for buildings via adverts. The should partner NUC
in other to get relevant modules/practise into the university system.

They have taken the 'easier' option of importing chinese, philipinos etc etc thinking those will stay only for short the term.
They should be at the fore front of adopting newer work experience schemes, just like they did with CSR with the banks following each other in adopting one cause or the other.

Ahmed Musa is now the all time highest goal scorer in the Nigerian league with 18 goals surpassing Ishaya Jatau and Okorondot's record of 17 goals
ARE U SURE?

if the score line is only 1-0, then he has only equalled teh record

Current highest goal scorer in the Nigeria Premier League, Kano Pillars Ahmed Musa has told the official NPL website that he is confident of breaking the goals record set by Ishaya Jatau and Akarandut Orok in spite of the club's banishment to Calabar for the rest of the season. Musa noted that he needs just two goals to be able to break that record and write his name in gold

There are job oportunities everwhere. There is always a vacant position for an individual who has value to add to an organization. Employers of labour are looking for people with solution or ideas for solution to the problems and challenges facing their organizations. In other words they are interested in what you can do, not the litany of certificates you parade.
But the only way EMPLOYEES in nigeria atract those people is by the number of Certificatet they bring to the interview

Lets be honest if employees dont demand certificate students will be spending valuing time and effort arranging work experience instead of shelling out on certificate

I wonder why NFF will reverse NPL's decision to banish Pillars to Calabar. Why will NFF order Pillars to move to Abuja instead of Calabar? The idea behind banishing a team is for it to play without its fans support. Is moving Pillars to Abuja a blessing or punishment considering the distance between Abuja and Kano. I think Pillars officials have bribed the NFF.
Banishment comes with conditions, if they pay tehir fines on time and appeal i think you can have it reduce and banishing a team all the way to the other side of the country is not really sensible apart from playing away from your fans there are other risks involve Nigerians roads are not exactly safe for travelling coupled with logistic issues

The English people are not regarded as hooligans in any news aired by BBC, SKY or CNN, check it properly they single out those hooligans and they don't attach sporting hooligans to other stories, the same way they don't attached unrelated news to sports; it is a known fact that each time the English football team are going for tournaments, SOME die-hard fans who are sometimes regarded as hooligans try to find their way to the venue, but you can never find such news about sporting hooligans being linked with any regular story; what they simply do is attach every negative story about fraud and add the name NIGERIA, they don't care about; first they do the damage, then they wait for us to complain then they apologies and that is the end of story. Something must be done, this cannot continue, we know not all Italians are mafia, same way we know not all Arabs are terrorist.

Well done guys for making your voice heard - GOOD THING WE NIGERIANS HAVE A WAY TO COMPLAIN ABOUT A FOREIGN STATION- its a shame we cant complain about programmes on NTA through the wonderful website

People, I cannot understand this constant whining about the BBC. Why do you still watch their channel, listen to their radio or go to their website, if you know that they hated you that much? Why not rely on NTA or FRCN website for their unbiased and fantastic journalism?

thank you jare, funny thing is that is one of the only website nigeria get their news, football etc from! its very common to see someone proving a point about news stories by posting the BBC. Chances are people will rely on the BBC website for nigerian team news- as the local media cant be bothered

I think you'll have to wait a bit for someone to load it onto youtube the iplayer is only available for UK
cant remember how fast the 'welcome to Lagos' got on youtube

Are you sure you really want to watch it? its like watching an amateurish documentary on cheap camcorder!!

the thing is the BBC now realise how obsessed nigeria and other Africans are about the portrayal of  nigeria- protest letters, commentaries, viewing figures shooting up etc etc
