I read on on two Nigerian newspapers last week, though no pictures or follow up as usual
It was picked up by Nigeria's Legal Aid Council who appointed Mr Nwaokporo a lawyer.
i think legal aid council are part of the NBA, as usual you have to bring things to people attention to get help

He still faces trial on armed robbery, conspiracy and weapons charges.
I can't believe they still want to prosecute him after six years without charge!

he should be paid 2m/year for the rest of his life!!

Who should assist them before? They should assist themselves. They chose farming as their profession so they should seek to improve themselves with the little support government is trying to give them. At least government has been subsidizing fertilizer for years and if the only vision the government can see for farmers is fertilizer, they should begin to look beyond the government.
beyond the government, the banks don't understand the agriculture sector or perhaps they are reluctant to loan farmers due the amount of time it takes to recover their investment and its also high risk, I don't think the Nigerians banks have appetite for that, if you notice they were falling over themselves to invest in shonga farms aka white farm in kwara because they have a track record

remember local farmers don't even know how to access all these government grant talk less of loans

Considering I am from the same Nigeria, I do not believe for one minute that the money is locked with the government. When we have thousands of local investors in the same country and many people looking for what to invest their money into. We have millions of Nigerians outside of Nigerians with money to invest. I believe the problem remains that instead of exploring other possible ideas, we continue to hope too much in a government and system that continues to fail us.
did you see what happened to the stock market when teh govt refuse to sign the budget? thats just a tit bit, the govt is too powerful

donmayor:
Nigerian rice is not well processed. Farmers producing should learn modern techniques. Why won't demand be low for rice with stones? Imagine picking rice before you eat it.
As large as Nigeria is, they claim we have only 30000 tractors? Farmers should be encouraged to embrace modern agricultural techniques to increase yield as well as better process their produce.
even with the tractor, the farmers still have to pay to rent them, they just park them at the local departments like
they are on parade or something! you rarely see the tractors in private farms if they are ever leased out!

The first line there started whenhuh Cause as I remember it, it has been the issue with the whole agricultural sector since the 80's. Why it is suddenly the issue for today when both the price of local and foreign rice is on the rise?? People have been smuggling rice in for decadesl. Even during the ban of the 90's and still the price of both local and foreign remained high. Why is a problem that is decades old suddenly the reason for the high price of rice today??
it's not just an issue now,It has been an issue ever since and moreso people are not willing to invest when they can easily make money importing rice. if you read properly i didnt say it is the sole reason for the price today, the problem is not our problem alone!

Is it really the government's job to encourage people to do anythinghuh I mean I am not in anyway saying Government does not have a role to play but for pete's sake, we have been living in a country where Government rarely does anything and we expect it to encourage us to do what we know is for our own good??
Actually theres nothing wrong with the govt encouraging people to do somethings
unlike other parts of the world, cash seems to be locked in government departments
due to corruption and to some extent lack of capacity, majority of these farmers dont actually know what to do
with money, if govt set the pace then people will follow

Where is this evidence that you claim??
low investment in growing and processing local rice
volume of imported rice increasing not only via the seaport
people are also smuggling in rice through benin/togo

Kobojunkie:
Even back when the ban on importation of rice was in place. It was still the same claim. People bought ofada and Nigerian grown brown rice and the price kept going high.
there are no pricing mechanism in nigeria, people charge whatever they like and for some reason ,price rarely come down in nigeria!

We are speaking of Nigeria here. Again, 75 million people living under $2 a day and you really believe demand is low for the goodhuh
Demand is low for Nigerian rice! the evidence is there!

Seun:
There's low demand for low quality food.
if it was possible to differentiate between foreign petrol and imported petrol, theres a good chance people will
say one is of superior quality! if it helps there are some oyinbos processing the food in some SW states
maybe they should start using oyinbo pictures on the packaging grin
Food › Re: Rising Prices Of Food by DisGuy: 1:45am On May 09, 2008
you know what i mean!

If demand for the product is greater than supply I think those importing rice
since 1980's would have scaled down by now and more businessmen will be into processing of rice
there's only been an increase in demand in the past two years for local rice
the quality is improving too

the way it is people are even making big profit smuggling rice into nigeria from
neighbouring countries, that says alot!
Food › Re: Rising Prices Of Food by DisGuy: 1:37am On May 09, 2008
people are waiting for the government to invest in this and that
government is waiting for the people to invest in this and that

I think another problem is that people are not actually buying made in nigeria rice
I think that is one of the reason why the govt increase the duties on imported rice-
so people can patronise the cheaper local one but no we wan chop tolly boy wink

A question please:
Is the Federal Govt still subsidizing the price of fertilizers for farmers?
Yes, we don't have a single manufacturer of the product in the country at the moment
and with the raising price of crude oil the price of fertilizer is increasing every year
if they don't subsidize it, Ota and other private farms will probably be the only ones that can
afford it, even at the current price state governments subsidize it when it is delivered to their state

babakura:
Now we know ,
We need to go back to Agric (build back d groundnut pyramids in the north, cocoa in the west, rubber , palm in the east ) and other crops that can thrive on our soil,
I think our lot will be better
Actually I don't think they can, back then industries processing groundnut were not available
and population was low and other related industries see little value the product

I wonder why the EFCC is not after this? Or is Yaradua sleeping? When he could easily catch "Etteh and Grange"!
i think the EFCC investigates mainly based on petitions and evidence-you can catch the likes of ettech and grange easily because one disgruntled members that did all the runnings will get only N25k when he is cashing millions on a daily basis, white collar crime is a bit more sophisticated wink

I don't think the AFC is involved in a illegal dealing at this point though

isn't AFC supposed to be an African thing why are all or majority of the board members nigerian and their investment focus is mainly nigeria, what happened to ADB?

the problem in nigeria isn't the president, it's the legislature. nigeria would be smoother if we have an effective legislative branch. nigerians complain about who their president is, but our problem wouldn't be huge if we cared who was elected as our representative in the senate or house assembly. did u expect yar'adua to come into power and raise a magic wand. no i'm not a yar'adua supporter.
agree with you, its total system failure, people wonder why he is bleeping rule of law rule of law but on daily basis many people don't follow the rule of law! I think if people follow the basics then things will actually improve!

so how many of you went to the polling station?

The thing will Ken Livingstone was that he too comfortable with the job he shot everyone down with his overwhelming PR crew- except that guy from evening standard-Andrew
And he was also playing the ethnic minority card too much he did a lot for them but at the same time they are still a minority in London and half of them don't even vote!!

I think if there was a different labour candidate he would probably have won he's been there Eight years!!
having a person like Gordon brown as the leader of labour party doesn't help either

If the conservatives don't curb Boris Johnson's buffoonery they wont win anything in a major election, so i think labour can count on Boris to F up big time! who wants the tinny routemaster when there's free bendy bus

Yar'adua is indeed a total failure as far as governance is concerned. He lacks the charisma to lead this great country called Nigeria. All his policies are of sick mind and equally the continuation of Obasanjo rule. PDP as a party should be dissolved since they all lacked vision likewise direction.

The bill has been on the president's desk now for years. This is the major reason why I sometimes feel Nigeria deserves to be exactly where it is today cause it seems the people are themselves not majorly ready to see change and so continue to make excuses to remain where they are today by constinually creating feather beds to cushion these charlatans we have in office, year after year.
the recommendation was that for the bill to be effective/relevant, the country needs to have specific departments like the national statistic bureau, departments in all govt agencies ready to comply with the law and workers/civil workers trained to comply with the law. I don't really think we have an office of national statistic as it is- the FOI is very important but as it is they should focus on strengthening institutions and implementing existing laws that also have direct effective on business and citizens

people in developed countries are proactive AND their representatives are also responsive, it's a two way thing after many years including 8 years with you hero obj people will just have to do the basic to survive and maintain sanity, allow going to Abuja to protest to people in glass houses or people with police escorts ready to shoot
Politics › Re: Reps Resolve To Probe Nnpc by DisGuy: 3:45am On Apr 24, 2008
The participants therefore endorsed the Freedom of Information Bill and resolved as follows:

· That the National Assembly should pass the Bill as quickly as possible, while the President should also assent to it, when it is passed by the National Assembly.

In anticipation of the passage of the Bill and the need to ensure its effective implementation, efforts should be made to engage the planning, research and statistics department of virtually all ministries, parastatals and commissions to make them aware of what is expected of them when the Bill becomes law and how to respond to request for public information that are in their custody. This is because by the nature of their functions, they are the repositories of information concerning the workings of their agencies.

That efforts should be made to address the capacity problems of both government agencies and civil society organizations, which could undermine the effective implementation of a Freedom of Information law in Nigeria, as there is a particularly level of capacity deficit among some government institutions in the area of generation and storage of basic information about their activities. The capacity issues in government also include infrastructural prerequisites in the area of Information and Communication Technologies, adequate training and manpower development, funding constraints, literacy level, commitment to change, etc.

democracy is slow lmao dude and nigeria's democracy appears to be worse but the speed at which you want things done is totally unrealistic!!

we know what the FOI bill is capable of, whether they actually follow or implement it is another thing entirely, now if you are as passionate about it as you are passionate about your petition you will start a new petition to bring it back to the fore front- contact your friend Patrick Obahiagbon

lmao can fix nigeria in one year- ode shocked
Politics › Re: Reps Resolve To Probe Nnpc by DisGuy: 2:45am On Apr 24, 2008
@lmao dude there's a big difference between how government is supposed to work and how it works especially the nigerian one! tongue

Lmao dude, what about a petition like the one you're carrying around concerning NIPOST, surely the FOI bill is more important than the nipost, or you are looking at it from a biznes angle only? wink

Sky Blue:
@Dis Guy, i really don't understand what line you are actually trying to argue, what about continuity in government, considering that it is thesame party that is ruling and that this bill is not a party but a Nigerian masses interest based bill why on earth should it start from square one? Do they need a new sheet of paper to write it or what? SO WHY THE DELAY? I genuinely don't understand your arguement so could you enlighten me? And also consider that Yaradua said he would pass the bill as quickly as possible (you can go and read 10month old news to confirm) so there is your time frame. So quickly as possible to pass an already established bill is 1 year? Really? Are we being serious here?
All the things he said he would do during his swearing in, emergency in power sector, electoral reforms, FOI bill, etc, anyone please, has he done any of them or laid down any feasible or concrete plans towards achieving anything. Hate to sound like a broken recors but this is ludacris.
that is what I'm talking about
Politics › Re: Reps Resolve To Probe Nnpc by DisGuy: 1:06am On Apr 24, 2008
in case you don't know about how the government works, (I actually don't think you do, going by some of the things you say)

if the people sponsoring the bill/ or reps moving the bill leave office it is very likely the process will go back to square one!!

lmao dude, why did OBJ sign it ? > correction< @ lmao why didn't OBJ sign it?
