Protectionism will not bring any benefits to the country as a whole.
most countries- UK for example will never go out of the way to employ people from foreign countries, they only consider people from other countries if and when they can't get some people from their own country AND THEY DON NOT SPECIFICALLY STATE WHAT NATIONALITY THE PERSON MUST COME FROM or who the job is ideal for based on nationality, just bias from the onset!

Stockbrokers said they have not received any formal communication from any of the capital market regulators on the reduction in market charges announced by the Federal Government last Wednesday.
The Federal Government through the ministry of finance had last Wednesday approved about 40 per cent reduction in all capital market fees for both primary and secondary market transactions.
By the approval, average equities transaction cost in the primary market, which currently stands at 6.92 per cent has been reduced to 4.32 per cent, while transaction cost on bonds has been reduced from 7.03 per cent to 4.79 per cent. For the secondary market, total transaction costs on equities have also been reduced. Specifically, equities transaction cost on the buy side has been reduced from 4.07 per cent to 2.36 per cent, while the sell side is now 2.65 per cent from the earlier cost of 4.12 per cent.
Government had fixed April 24, 2007 as the effective date for the commencement of the new cost regime. But a cross-survey of stockbrokers at the weekend showed that operators have neither receive any formal directive on the reductions nor the breakdown of the cost structure that will indicate the percentage due to stockbrokers, the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Central Securities Clearing System, Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Government.
Stockbrokers who spoke on anonymity said regulators jumped the gun in the consideration and announcement of the reductions stating that the policy changes announced Wednesday did not reflect input of operators.

@ Dis Guy - What of the new rates introduced? Aren't they supposed to take immediate effect?
Well according to this it should take immediate effect maybe there are some 'buts' and 'ifs' the brokers are trying to capitalise on.

Dollyp1, why don't you ask them what the charge was for.

Seriously I lived in the north for 2 years and I know these Almajiris are not from Niger Mind you the Almajiri's are different from the curly haired, fair skinned ones we see around begging for money. They are children between the ages of 3 and 14 years very dark skinned. Because of the extreme poverty in the north some parents send their children to Islamic scholars to learn Koran since the Mullah is not a millionaire, the children are left to go outside to community to beg for alms from the people and some people give them because they see it as if you are helping God's work. These children sleep outside in the rain or shine and woe betide you if you go to and canteen and take your eyes of your food.
What did other state governor do effectively to curb begging ?

Anyway, I hope he is part of the plan, that is if he doesnt join another party

bloody hell how can he(el rufai) be finance minister or even energy
Investment › Re: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by DisGuy: 7:13pm On May 02, 2007
It is fair if you have been told the percentage they'll charge you for every transaction

It's a rip off if it is well above the 'normal' commsion rate and you've not been made to understand that before you bought the shares

not too sure, what the current charges are

yea nigeria should use the so called reserve and build hospital, farms, and more refineries then cheesy

I really wonder sometimes if other governors basically use up the allocations and get some sort of loans from private and international firms to build infrastructures are not doing so at the expense of the the next administrator or FG with some over optimistic projects making waves with NTA and co

shld we observe a clapping ovation for yar'adau just because he didnt steal govt money?

leadership goes beyond all that. if the man couldnt develop his state while he was govenor, y should we waste our time over him. will he begin to spring up surprises now that he's president? i think not. what he will do in his position as president is already reflected tru katsina state.

if he did, y didnt he campaign against the ugly trend?

i already know the kind of president we have and im not expecting him to peform more than his capabilities smiley
In the nigerian context, yes, you should observe a standing ovation for yaradua 'just because he didnt steal govt money' and also for other governors that achieved something

almajiris is a big issue for the hausas, they feel strongly about it and im sure yar'adua being an hausa man would not consider it improper to have children beg for food on the streets.
Almajris is a big issue for nigerians, I dont know if you watched the documentary on nta about almajiris but ALL of the 'elders' in that programme consider it 'abusing the goodwill of fellow citizens' and pure laziness in most case

if he did, y didnt he campaign against the ugly trend?
i wonder how many governors did that, given the condition of nigeria any govt official that does without putting in place adequate facilities will be a laughing stock- give out 50 okadas, 20 generators and several bags of rice is wasteful!
Politics › Re: Yar'adua - A Curse In Disguise by DisGuy: 10:24am On May 01, 2007
basically you want someone who will be on television with about 12 PR assistants huh?
In Yar' Adua, I see complacency.
based on what exactly? based on the fact that he looks calm and collected?
everyone cant be an oshomole* (the ex-labour guy), people lead in different ways

Atiku was hungry for the job does that mean he can actually deliver? wink

zillonnair:
i should tell you so you can go ahead and further castigate the character of african and nigerians in particular. Nonsense, i suggest you find a more positive thing to write about
so basically there is nothing positive for you to tell him?

My focus are the recent national reforms (with respect to the global education conferences) and their
impact on the daily life in schools! Maybe some of you can help me: What do you think are the EFA
goals or the UBE reform affecting the local schools or is it just political rhetoric which has not that much impact?
most of those reforms are still on paper right about now probably on the conference chair wink
honestly i think those reforms will go a long way IF they are diligently put to practice but as thing are we are still waiting for the change, a lot of time has already been spent on inspections alone and most of the recommendations have been met by rusty heads of school that don't welcome change without getting anything in return [usually less regulation, less workload, improved salaries, better job security]

Right about now the current minister of education is taking up a new job, so we'll probably be another 6months back in reforms as the new minister would either ditch the current plans or take time in adjusting to the new position wink

Governor Joshua Dariye again served fresh impeachment notice by Plateau State lawmakers on the day he resume in office after the illegal impeachment.

is this not Bad Belle? The man have 29 days to handover, it's better and honourable to allow him complete his tenure and depart peacefully?
It is also better and honourable to respect bail!

"I want the deputy governor to cooperate and handover properly. This dodging-dodging will not help,"-BBC
Mr Dariye says he will "pump a lot of money" into a state-owned university he was building before he was impeached last November.

"pump a lot of money" hint hint wink

Investment › Re: Govt Raises Minimum Fund Portfolios For Capital Market by DisGuy: 10:50pm On Apr 30, 2007
To be honest the govt shouldnt be encouraging anyone to get insurance backing it should be standard business sense,  Insurance even for big companies is still a grey area for this 'executives' they like cutting corners that's why these regulations always seem like big task to them.

Also to regionalize the program for companies that do not have a lot of assets or that are just starting up until they can raise enough capitals, that way it would be regulated and the small companies too would have a piece of the pie. There would be more competition, better services and more employment.
I don't really get the concept of regionalising  the program, if you mean companies in some parts of the country requiring lower capital, then that is a good idea only that some people might exploit that by opening a branch say in katsina state/ogun state only to open another in lagos where virtually 99% of their operations will take place.
on the other hand quality might be comprised

I think they can have something like community banks or different requirements for brokers that deal with special kind of stocks e.g ethical stocks or exclusively funds

I think with better regulations and enforcements we will be in safe hands-fingers crossed

Ah ah smiley we're getting somewhere. I'll like to ask more questions at this point.

1. How long can you wait to get your orders delivered?
2. Will you pay extra to get express shipment/delivery?
3. Will you prefer to tell relatives in nigeria to buy things you want -- or prefer to buy through a website?
4. How often do you normally shop online.
5. Which one are you comfortable with? Credit cards, money wire, paypal, egold.
-just answering

1. preferably within 24 hrs
2. dependng on what you mean by 'extra' and 'express' as long as its not significantly more expensive than the localpost
3. Relatives, thats if you have any left at all in nigeria. and also price
