Hi, there's this thing that has been bothering my mind as regards people's reaction to teenagers having a car. In some countries overseas, there are some vehicles that they believe are meant for teens but here in Nigeria, if a teen is seen driving that type of car, you'll hear people say 'tani o gbe iru motor yi fun omo yii?' i. e ' who gave this boy/girl this type of vehicle to drive?' When you visit a website like edmunds.com, you'll find a topic there 'cars for teenagers' which include the: 2009 Honda Accord 2009 Toyota Camry 2010 Chevrolet Malibu 2010 Volkswagen Jetta 2011 Hyundai Sonata 2012 Honda Accord 2012 Hyundai Sonata 2012 Toyota Camry 2012 Volkswagen Jetta 2013 Chevrolet Malibu and the likes. My point and my question now is that, is because of the status of our country Nigeria as a developing country or what? I'll appreciate substantial comments, thank you.
these cars dont anything like what the average teenage wil buy but then again it's depending on what country you are surveying- these cars are family, boring grown men cars Golf, Vauxhal Corsa, Seat Ibiza, 206 GTi, Audi A3/A4 have more va va voom for the average teenager in Europe- Hatchbacks, small and easy to park and sporty feel to the main issue, most teenagers in naija cant afford to buy a car as they are not allowed to work, hence adult will usually be shocked- they know it's most likely their family car or belongs to someone who will foot the bill when something goes wrong. Teenagers elsewhere will most probably buy the cars on credit, and pay it off on a monthly basis from their part time work and personal savings |
come on masterminds...lets have the name of all the previous Attorney Generals in kogi |
naptu2: The BBC's Will Ross takes the train from Lagos to Kano.I'm surprised yet again that it's only a foriegn media outfit/reporter that has been able to make a video of 'new development', the rest couldnt even manage a decent picture documentary thanks Naptu2 |
I wonder why they cant just get decent toilet set up on the trains? whats with the shot put on the tracks? |
Sincere 9gerian: Premium Times, as biased as they are towards this govt, did LIVE blogging twice on the railways. On no occasion did the journey from Lagos to Illorin take more than 9 hoursBusinessday is pro government August 26 2013 and heres their experience http://businessdayonline.com/2013/08/lagos-kano-train-service/ we got to Abeokuta at 7.33pm, Ibadan 10.12pm and Oshogbo at 2.20am on Saturday yet at that unholy hour, under-aged children and aged mothers were seen hawking all kinds of goods at the train station. At this station, I saw passengers struggling and jostling to get inside the train and most of them were elderly women traders with several bags and baggages. That scene alone strengthens Nigeria’s position as a country with a high level of child abuse. Less than 10 minutes into the commencement of our journey to Offa, I noticed a sudden shutdown of engine noise and all of a sudden, the 300 tons engine head started pulling all the 21 coaches at a 100 percent less speed than that of a millipede. When our reporter asked one of the security officers drafted from the NRC Police Command what is the cause of the sudden development, he retorted “Ah my brother, we have to crawl like this until we get out of this situation. Any time it rains and the tracks gets waterlogged, it impedes free movement of the steel wheels as a result of the scratching effect until it is dried up again and the train returns to its normal speed. And if the train moves faster than the crawling speed, it will derail.” It took the combined effort of some NRC staff to come down from the train anytime there is a wheel spin to pick stones and sand in order to lubricate the wheels for easier movement of coaches. At this point, I remembered telling my wife to commit my journey into prayers. I also recollected that Victor Obayagbona, a colleague of mine, had prayed for me Thursday night in the office prior to my departure. We got to Oshogbo at 2.20am and struggled to get to Offa station by 8.05am on Saturday as a result of the hitches. |
deeptesting: I am pretty sure Nigerians will call the government several names if your submission is implemented but the truth is that development comes with a price...Are we ready to pay that price as a people? I attended a seminar few months ago in Dubai though I have been to other western countries, I was perplexed by the level of progress the UAE has made and the people live by the laws governing the country....So I strongly believe that the Nigerian government and the people are responsible for the menace...I was in Abuja late last year, i noticed theyve introduce parking restrictions in some parts of town-slowly but surely people are already 'thinking' before parking, parking well within acceptable limits and some look for alternatives if they dont want to pay they can call govt all sort of names but if the government is sincere and the rules apply to everyone! Law abiding citizens will be the same people on the side of the govt and many will even beg the govt to introduce such policies to their area! a honest governemnt will go the extra mile to reinvest the accrued revenue to improving road transportation many local govt in other parts of the world are also called names when these sort of policies are introduced but the people/residents actually at the receiving end of monster drivers, wayward drivers will defend the govt actions |
"Always at War" I don't know who most of these drivers on the road are fighting. I was once on the line at the toll, with my car perfectly within the confines of my lane. Just before approaching the booth, another motorist started jostling for position with my car. The height of all madness, is what I experienced that day. This dude just brazenly rammed his car into mine, I guess he was thinking that I would give way so as not to damage my car, but in that moment, I felt I had to defend my right and stay in my lane (as childish as that sounds), hence refusing him entry. Usually I would allow entry to cars that are already in front of mine, but this guy was side by side with me, the best thing a sane person would do when trying to enter someone else's lane in that situation would be to go in after me. Anyway after the initial ramming, he kept going, that is, he just kept bashing my car, forcefully removing me from my lane. It got so bad that when I tried to swerve away, to give this mad man chance, I couldn't. Why? Because this lunatic had rammed his car tire into mine, sorta locking both of them. I reached my boiling point when I looked over through my window to shout at the guy, and behold to my amazement, the guy had an emotionless face on him, while just looking forward, as if nothing was happening, and the bashing of my car was all in my head. I just had to get out of my car and kick his ass, lol. I really can't say it any better, it was sweet ass kicking, the justified kind. Police had to come in, blah, blah, blah, at the end the mad man came to be apologizing, evidence of the obvious dual personality possessed by him. It really is war on the roads, but as I said, I don't know who they are fighting.
LMAOOOO zombie nation, was he an office dude or driver or just random car owner? he might have just done 10hour shift at the office, with numbers, data, codes coming out of his ears- he was in dead zone and you were at the receiving end lol |
when driving on a 2-3 lane road, for some weird reason, people try to drive in between you and the car on the next lane even though theres no main advantage to it, they are not exactly getting anywhere fast as theres traffic ahead, and some darn right dont even drive in one single lane, they just hug the middle of the lane |
BECAUSE THERES NO ONE TO PUNISH THEM!!! hefty fines, clamping and seizing their license would make people think twice!! just imagine all those that formed extra lanes to bypass slow moving traffic were blocked off and made to stay extra 3hours i doubt they wil do the same thing again so soon there are many things that happen in the country that people dont see as bad because they dont get told off!! |
Where are all those economist that keep shouting Refinery business is not profitable ? |
lygn19: All I am saying is that in Nigeria,,,every individual, regardless of tribe shud be allowed to tap into d economy and compete in a level ground,,,der shudnt be govt restricted "NO GO AREAS"... Every1 shud be allowed to think like a true capitalist... Nobody shud be made an Island...if Mr A is from d north is given certificate to produce sth, just bcoz they want to keep Mr A in business doesn't mean,u shud restrain Mr B from getting d same certificate, even if its d same procedure he passed tru...when all the mister ABC were getting contracts to import fuel no issue but mister D that seems to consistantly do well in his basic area is always getting a knock because he is not from your area...and like any sensible business man operating in an unpredictable environment like ours is influencing the the govt to get favourable business policies like a normal capitalist would!! don't hate the player!! there are a 101 sectors dangote is not competing in, no one is pointing at Arik, Banks etc |
you made a naija call for 150ksh? don't forget to take pictures when you settle in properly ![]() |
ifebosco: give credit when due,the man is a good businessman who give´s jobs to many nigerians, dangote is a political multivated money, although i still respect him smallYes he is a good business man no one is denying him credit--- but saying 'great man' is gone [the initial explanation] saying you feed people== sound like self-praise to me |
Afam4eva: The meaning of "Dike" is lost in translation. of course it sounds weird for someone to say something like that in English but not in Igbo. The meaning should not be seen from a literal prism. "Dike" can often be used in exchange of any prefix though does not share the same meaning with the prefix.thanks |
iT NOT NEW NIGERIAN players have a lot of coach and ogas to settle with every trransfer to Europe and elsewhere, getting playing times with nigerian team increase their chances of getting international clearance Ligue 2 for that matter same story playing out with Kayode and Ogunjobi |
berem: The man is rich and he helps the needy. So many people depend on his for daily survival. I know of a Widow he gave a brand new car and cash. He and his wife are generous people. So he is right if he made that statement.this first part or the second part? as in do people really refer to themselves as the 'great man' especially at the point of dea and I cant imagine a Dangote saying 'i'm feeding xxxxx people' dunno dont sound like what someone will say or should say about themself perharps the reporters was adding his own jara |
Im actually thinking of doing the same via Dubai next time but i'll be staying for a day or two it's like a holiday within a holiday ![]() |
'Dike Anaaaaa' (Thecan anyone help with this, is this an IGBO proverb, and if it was does it mean? -cant really imagine anyone saying this about himself really "why didas in...? |
If you have EU visa or Passport you'll be allowed to leave the lounge area. if you don't 10hours is damn long time to sit and wait especially knowing theres a beautiful, lively terminal outside waiting to be explored ![]() If you booked your tickets yourself, I'll advise you to go back online and choose a more appropriate change over time. they have connecting flights every other hour |
