Wonderful. The more you look the less you see.

Is Opay not Chinese? I don't really know much about Moniepoint but I know Opay has chinese connects
It used to be. But where else is better and safer for underhanded financial dealings if not Nigeria?

Opay registered its parent/holding company in Nigeria just 3 months ago as OPAY HOLDINGS.

2 years ago it raised $400 million from (mostly) U.S. VCs at a $2 billion valuation even though its financial records weren't really subjected to public scrunity before that.

Piece of cake. Register as a U.S. company, get millions of dollars in funding, then do business as a holding company registered in places with lax regulations.

Welcome to Sub-Saharan African fintech ecosystem. Exploiting loopholes.

The lure of free money is a higher motivation to risk it all and damn the deterrents as Flutterwave proved until they were caught.

There's a loophole which can be exploited. You can register the company in the U.S. to get VC funding from VCs like Y Combinator, then register the parent company is some nontransparent haven like Panama or even Nigeria.

For example, say I am Tony Elumelu building a fintech SAAS and a startup around it. I can register the company name in the U.S. as, say, UBA. Once I get funding, I can register a parent company or holding company, say Heirs Holding, in Panama or Nigeria. Then siphon funds through Heirs Holding and it wouldn't be illegal.
Even Y Combinator allows this.

Many of these fintech companies have parent companies in countries with nontransparent regulations.

OPAY, for example, has a parent company. Moniepoint has a parent company. These parent companies are mostly not accountable to most regulations.

Even the top tech news platforms laundering the images of these fintechs have parent companies or holding companies where the board is sketchy.

Tech Cabal, the biggest tech news platform in Nigeria and West Africa, has a parent company/holding company called "Big Cabal" and that's where the information trail stops.

It's deeper than you even realize.

The same network of people control the top tech blogs. They control the perception of everything and what you know about the inner workings of these tech companies.

To raise venture capital in the Nigerian tech ecosystem, there are arses you need to kiss. Like really kiss else it's you against a mountain.

Is there a Nigerian FinTech company not running some sort of fraud. I feel genuine pity for people keeping their money with these people. E better to try your luck with Sportybet or Bet9ja at least when you lose you know you selected wrong games
Actually, African , SubSaharan Africa in general have that slight taint.

Another reason Y Combinator insists founders seeking to get VC funding must register their companies in the U.S. before Demo Day so they are subject to regulations.

Flutterwave was complicit too (mostly money laundering) between 2019 and 2022, but after they were fined heavily and severally in the U.S. and founders made to appear in court, they buckled up.

Other VCs like the Boabab Network don't insist on this so the companies escape regulations. And they are hawks too preying on founders with stringent conditions.

Our systems are weak. Even giants like Access Bank commit fraud by making unsanctioned deductions from accounts.

If you are active on Nigerian Tech Twitter, there's been a buzzing scandal about PayDay, and even more so in the last few days, with accusations of fraud and the weakness of its security systems.

The platform carrying the story is one of Nigeria's two biggest tech news platform, TechNext24.

But here's where it gets even more interesting: The major recounts/stories/testimonies/evidences it is basing its accusations of PayDay's complicity in fraud are gotten from... Guess where? Nairaland!
Nairaland is being referenced to corroborate the accusations.

Now you see why I insist you should counter lies regardless of whose ox gets gored, else years from now these anti-people power-grabbers-by-all-means would try to rewrite history. It might mean being at odds with the 'egbons' you look up to but counter the lies for the greater good.

Nairaland is still the highest-ranking Nigerian website in search results. What you post here matters in the grand scheme of things. Counter the lies for posterity sake. Else Nations Newspaper and others would use the lies as evidence years from now. Your rebuttals shape public opinion in the long run.

Here's purportedly the place where the Amalgamation of Northern and Southern Nigeria was formed in Lokoja.
https://www.nairaland.com/7804257/picture-house-where-fredrick-lugard

The thing is, it's a lie . Sorry many historical recounts of Nigeria are false.

It was actually signed in Akwa Ibom.

The 1914 Amalgamation House in Akwa Ibom is less than 250 meters away from the 1929 Women Massacre spot (which is wrongly called Aba Women Riot because it did happen in Akwa Ibom, and we had to file documents to get it properly gazettle officially less than 2 decades ago.

Those two historical sites are less than 150 metres away from the Bridge of No Return where slaves were shipped off to the Americas.

Less than 200 metres away is the only Women War Memorial in Africa to honour these women, and one of two in the world - the other being in the United States.

I should know since I took pictures of these places, did videos and interviews for a documentary in February, 2020.

Just across that strip of ocean is Opobo in Rivers State which is very visible.

About two kilometers away, you have the longest natural coastal beach in West Africa - Ibeno Beach.

Much of Nigeria's history recounted today is a lie which is why telling and documenting events for posterity sake is important.
I could draw parallels with how Buhari got whitewashed and sold to Nigerians because we had mostly false recounts of his military rule.

Please if you have time, analyse that Kelvin's guy tweets. I am not Emefiele's fan but I don't understand the negative reactions following that tweet. Emefiele will explain everything there with no sweat. Emefiele spoilt his name by going into politics and all while being the Governor of CBN sha.

CBN manages foreign exchange reserves. Is one of their core responsibilities. CBN Act 2007.

Foreign exchange reserves na assets held by CBN in foreign currency (dollar). I already knew where the Kelvin guy was heading to when I saw this three words in his posts. SDRs, foreign exchange reserves and IMF.

During Emefiele, it was non floating exchange rate. You need somehow high foreign exchange reserves to back the Naira against the dollar. We import almost everything including PMS. Like subsidy on dollar.

Yes, you can use foreign exchange reserves as collateral for loans, assets like foreign bank notes (dollars) make up foreign exchange reserves.

The Kelvin guy said the actual numbers are 50 percent of what was stated. No sane organisation or institution will give you loan without collateral.

Remember, you need high foreign exchange reserves to act as a buffer in the non floating exchange rate. Now let's say we have 10 dollars in our reserves, we borrow 10 dollars to add making 20 dollars. How much should be stated that we have in our foreign exchange reserves?

The question I expected people to be asking is why didn't Emefiele use SDRs to borrow from IMF instead of going to, in quote "two US banks" (no names). I know there are reasons for not approaching IMF, maybe constraints or something.

Buhari fixed the dollars so that things will not be too expensive even borrowing to back it up. People complained. Nigeria depends on imports, we all know.

Tinubu came and float it, no more subsidy. We can't afford it anymore. People are still complaining.

So I ask you, what exactly do we want? Until we start producing, exporting more than import and making Nigeria a very industrialised nation. The Naira will continue to depreciate against the dollars.

Dollar is the SI units of all currencies. Countries review their minimum wage with respect to the dollars to balance everything. I want FG to do the same. Not that dollars will rise and minimum wage will remain the same. Is a no no.

Teaming up with a Tinubu who's covetous was always going to be a recipe for economic disaster at a time when financial resources SEEM to be scarce.

Here's how much of a lavish spender Akpabio was:

During his time as Governor (the first tenure especially), all you had to do was name-drop Akpabio's name in a song poorly made on FL Studio and you'd get #5 - 15 million naira and a jeep as gifts.
Artistes and pseudo-artistes in and from Akwa Ibom made money this way.

If you name-drop Akpabio then add the "Akwa Ibom ado okay" slang, free access to government house for millions.

It didn't matter if you had the artistic flair of Speed Darlington. Praise Akpabio in your song and money drops.

Remember how MC Galaxy used to name-drop Akpabio on every song between 2011 and 2014? I could mention several others.

Man used to honour church invites with Ghana-Must-Go bags of money as donations. Yes, actual bags.

So lavish, till date, he's nicknamed "Ano owo nkpo" (loosely translated as "the one who gives" ). But "gives" from where? Our Commonwealth.

That was not someone I wanted managing Nigeria at this time.

He executed many projects but he's a lavish (and sometimes wasteful) spender. These are coexisting truths about him.

There's a reason I didn't support Akpabio's presidential campaign - even kicked against it - even though he's still the Governor with the most executed projects Akwa Ibom has ever had.

There's a reason I didn't gloat about his emergence as Senate President online and offline, even though there was an ongoing interstate ego tussle involving me and a few others right on this thread.

Governance goes beyond ethnicity and state affiliations.

Obi was and is always the best person to lead Nigeria through these rough times based on his antecedence of frugal and wise management of state resources. Akpabio was always the opposite (his good intentions regardless) and all you have to do is local-search my moniker(s) and add "Akpabio" to it, filtering to the politics section.
Sending millions to senators to "enjoy the weekend" is reminiscent of how he used to lavish multiple millions for being invited to a church or some random function.
