What is wrong with the Nigerian Local Breed of dog?

A very wealthy man once came with his dog to the clinic for medical attention but before he came, he had called me. I was really expecting a German shepherd dog or a Rottweiler but lo and behold it was our Nigerian local breed of dog. To be candid, I saw disappointed faces among my staff but I tried to be nice to the man by saying nice things about his dog. We still did our examination and clinical procedures and issued the man his bill which he cleared happily.

Out of curiosity, I asked him why he chose a Local dog. He answered: “I guess I have to answer this question for the rest of my life”. He narrated his story about all the dogs he ever acquired and the sad way they all died. He spoke long about a Caucasian breed he once owned that was more of a companion to him & the way he usually goes to evening walks with that dog. The death of that dog made him give up on keeping dogs entirely but on narrating his story to a friend, his friend told him that our local breeds hardly die of all these diseases so he considered getting one.

I thank God that most members of my staff heard the story. After the man left I raised the question: “But what is wrong with our Nigerian local breed?” One of them said that it belittles the man, that a man of his status should own one of the best breeds available. So I asked again that considering his story about his experience with those breeds they preferred, what can they say? The other echoed that the man must have contacted inexperienced vets to treat his dogs. I only wanted to hear from them. I saw from their views, a resentment for the local breed.
The Nigerian local breed has been called all sorts of names such as “Ekuke”, shit eater, stray dog, local dog, “shinee” to mention but a few. These names are derogatory in nature to make the dog look unimportant and undesirable. “Ekuke” as they are popularly called are the dogs preferred as food for the cultures that eat dog meat popularly called “404” (four-ow-four). They are the cheapest dogs to buy in Nigeria. They are sold as little as one thousand five hundred naira (N1,500) about $10 (ten US dollars).

So what is bad about the Nigerian Local breed?

If you ask many Nigerians that resent this breed of dog the reason why they dislike it, they won’t be able to give you concrete reasons. Many of us have seen very intelligent local breeds. Many of them are trained and used for hunting bush meat by locals in which they perform excellently well. In the rural areas these dogs are usually the best for securing the compound or yard against intruders, although they are good at alerting against strangers. I have seen many of these dogs doing spectacular things but I guess like Jesus said: “A prophet is not recognized in his environment…” I have seen foreigners who prefer our own breed to theirs, pointing out the unique features they possess while we, Nigerians buy books to read about the foreign breeds.
I guess we, Nigerians should start to love our local breed of dogs and also acquire and keep them just like the man in the story above.

Let me tell you a fact that Local Nigerian breeds resist many of the diseases other foreign breeds will die readily from here in Nigeria. So think about it.

1. God gave no man authority to make recommendations of such where it concerns His Will and Law. He was not being foolish when He left it to individuals to decide these things for themselves. Your recommendations amount to traditions which God explicitly condemned as an abomination - Matthew 15 vs 1 - 14 and Mark 7 vs 1 - 13

2. I am afraid you are mistaken about your statement concerning Jesus Christ's teachings. Jesus Christ, God's New Covenant Law and Truth in the Kingdom of God is instead a different and separate standard standard God's Old Covenant Law of Moses.

If there is a 90% chance that an activity will cause me to sin, it means I am not where God expects me to be - there are still lies stored up in my heart that I have yet to rid myself of in order that I may instead be free from slavery to sin - Matthew 15 vs 10 - 20 & Mark 7 vs 10 - 23 & John 8 vs 31 - 32. Again, Jesus Christ did not teach avoidance as strategy for overcoming sin, instead He taught us that we should instead we should submit ourselves to God's Truth in obedience so sin, and the curse, no longer rules over us.

4. Here's the kicker ..... Jesus Christ said you are to only learn from Him so how can you "learn" from the experience of others when as a born-again, you are meant to learn these things only from Jesus Christ- Matthew 23 vs 8 - 10

He doesn't actually say, "if your right hand will cause you to sin(future tense)" nor does He say to cut off someone else's hand if sin is caused. Instead, what Jesus Christ said is, "if your right hand causes you to sin(past tense), cut it(your own right hand) off..." - Matthew 5 vs 29 - 30.

Some are able to date without risk of temptation while there are others who find, this after trying it, cannot keep themselves from sinning. Jesus Christ, in no way, imposes any rule as far as dating, allowing individuals to decide what they can or can't handle for themselves

2. Again, pay attention to what Jesus Christ in fact said and how much different it is from what you are here insinuating. Jesus Christ in no way advises individuals to avoid engaging in activities for fear of sin. Again, what He said is instead, "if your right hand causes you to sin(past tense), cut it off".

3. Please realize that instituting rules in addition to that given us by Jesus Christ is sin against God. This is akin to setting onself up as god over those who you give these rules to, and that is in direct violation of God's Law, Jesus Christ.

Dating is not a sin neither is it indicated by God as avenue for sin. As Matthew 5 vs 29 - 30 reveals, God has infact left it to individuals to test their limits and decide for themself, where He, God, has not set any explicit rules.

Making a recommendation of what behavior is inadvisable to engage in, is not the same thing as making it part of the "Law". Yes, Jesus warns in Revelation 22:18-19 that adding or removing from the words of this prophecy will attract a curse.

He however doesn't say that making recommendations by drawing inferences from real life experiences and the commandments is sin. A cursory look at Jesus' teachings will show that they are largely inferences from the commandments handed to Israel by God through Moses.

If there is a 90% probability that engaging in an activity will lead you into sin, would you want to try it out to see if you are among the 10%? The picture you paint is that of trying everything and anything, then when it leads you into sin, you can then say "Oh! This led me into sin, and it is something I shouldn't do anymore".

And by that you imply that learning from people's life experiences and history is completely moot.

NB: The statistics presented above is just an example, and though I cannot categorically say that dating will lead to lust in 9 out 10 situations but I'm very certain that the likelihood is very high.

Also to infer that sexual lust is behind all dating is a bit much.

2. Succumbing to lust is one thing. Dating is another. Many date without ever really lusting after their date for one reason or another. However, even those without a dating relationship can and do succumb to lust. So tying dating to adultery is not a right way to go at all.

Those who make excuses for fornication do so for reason unrelated to God's Law, Jesus Christ. We have no right to add our own modifications to God's Law because of what people do. That is sin.

I am not saying that lust can only come from dating. But I'm saying that dating definitely and almost certainly exposes you to lust, unless you are asexual.

Jesus said something "if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off" while that can be literal it also is largely figurative indicating that you avoid and separate from things that can and does expose you to sin.

Is having your right hand sinful, "absolutely not" just as you are arguing about dating. But is it advisable to engage in it considering what lurks in the shadows, "absolutely not".

Finally, I want to add that I'm not on a campaign to change your mind on this subject. I just commented so as to appreciate the journey of the person who created the thread.
