The 32-year-old Gabon star remains out of consideration for selection following a breach of club discipline Mikel Arteta has revealed that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will not come back into consideration for a recall at Arsenal ahead of their trip to Leeds on Saturday. The Gabon international striker was not selected on Wednesday as Arsenal defeated West Ham 2-0 at Emirates Stadium to jump into the Premier League's top four. That was the second game Aubameyang had been forced to sit out in a week that also saw him stripped of captaincy duties at Emirates Stadium following a breach of discipline. What has been said? Following the win over the Hammers, Arteta was asked by BT Sport if Aubameyang would feature in Arsenal's next match. The head coach replied: "He wasn't eligible for this game and that's it. This game is gone. We will discuss it in the near future." That time has now come, with the Spanish coach stating that the 32-year-old frontman will once again be forced to watch on from afar when the Gunners head to Elland Road. He has said: "No, he’s not available for selection." Arteta went on to say when asked about what Aubameyang needs to do in order to be welcomed back into the fold: "Well, he’s not available for the Leeds game, and this is the situation right now." Pressed further on whether the issues with the former skipper could impact plans to tie Alexandre Lacazette - who has filled the armband of late - to a new contract, the Gunners boss said: "Alex’s performances, involvement and commitment is without question. "It’s not related to his contract situation. I discussed it in the summer with him - what the situation was - and we are both clear on that. Auba’s situation is something separate to that." What did Aubameyang do? Arteta initially dropped the striker for Arsenal's match against Southampton after he was absent from a pre-match training session. After a 3-0 win over the Saints, Arsenal released a statement saying Aubameyang had been stripped of the club's captaincy and would also not be considered for selection against the Hammers. In the statement, Arteta said: "The decision that we have taken as a club is very clear. It is because we believe that he has failed to be committed at the level that we all expect and agreed. "That commitment and passion has to be there. Unfortunately, it wasn’t." |

A re-draw for the Champions League last 16 has pitted Manchester United against Atletico Madrid after Ralf Rangnick’s side had initially been drawn to face Paris Saint-Germain. A surprise turn of events saw the initial last-16 draw declared void after what UEFA called a "technical error" involving Atletico Madrid, Liverpool and Manchester United, Sky Sports reports. The re-draw took place three hours later, and Liverpool now face Serie A champions Inter Milan, Chelsea drew Ligue 1 winners Lille - having done so in the first draw as well - while Manchester City will take on Sporting Lisbon. United looked to have been offered the biggest reprieve after drawing PSG in the initial draw, but a meeting with Atletico in European competition since 1991 will still provide a stern test. Meanwhile, Real Madrid will perhaps feel the most aggrieved by the error - they were drawn against Benfica in the morning but will now face PSG instead. Elsewhere, Liverpool's reward for becoming the first English side to win all six Champions League group games is a tie with Inter, who won Serie A last season and currently top the table after 17 games. It was a case of deja vu for defending champions Chelsea, who were drawn against Lille in both the original and rescheduled draw. City, last season's losing finalists, face Sporting for the first time since the two sides met in the Europa League nine years ago. Champions League last-16 draw Salzburg vs Bayern Munich Sporting Lisbon vs Manchester City Benfica vs Ajax Chelsea vs Lille Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United Villarreal vs Juventus Inter Milan vs Liverpool Paris Saint-Germain vs Real Madrid

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, lead counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has moved to ask Justice Binta Nyako of a Federal High Court in Abuja to recuse herself from the trial of his client. He also stated that contrary to reports, the legal team which he led did not stage a walkout from the court during Kanu’s trial on November 10 following the refusal of operatives of the Department of State Services to allow some of them to gain access into the courtroom. “My client and by extension, the legal team has no implicit confidence in the court to proceed in this case. So, going forward, we are activating processes to urge my Lord to recuse herself from this case so that the Chief Judge would give a directive to that effect. It is open now even before a layman on the street, it’s clear that she is partial. “So, now let me say this to you; this is a case in which we are representing a race, not Nnamdi Kanu. This is a case involving Igbo’s not Nnamdi Kanu alone we’re representing a race in this case. As sensible as serious as this case may be, it shouldn’t have been treated with this sense of levity,” he said. SaharaReporters had on November 7 reported that Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s counsel, said Kanu's legal team would take urgent and decisive measures over the arbitrary adjournment of the case. Taking to his Twitter handle last Wednesday, Ejimakor had described the acts of Justice Nyako at the Wednesday's trial as a “travesty of Justice”. He had tweeted, “I’m not happy. The world should not be happy. The judge LOCKED out Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers & refused us entry into the courtroom. She then arbitrarily adjourned the case to January 19, 2022. This is a travesty of justice. We will surely take urgent & decisive measures.” SaharaReporters had earlier reported that the trial of Kanu was adjourned to the 19th and 20th of January 2022. Kanu had alongside his lawyers protested the refusal of the DSS to allow some of his lawyers access into the court, particularly the lawyer from the USA, Bruce Fein. Kanu, who was re-arraigned before trial Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, is facing a seven-count amended treasonable felony charge the Federal Government preferred against him. The Nigerian government had in the amended charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015, which was signed by a team of government lawyers led by the Director, Public Prosecution of the Federation, Mr. M. B. Abubakar, alleged that Kanu had in furtherance of an act of terrorism, issued a deadly threat that anyone that flouted his sit-at-home order should write his or her will. The Nigerian government alleged that as a result of Kanu’s directive, banks, schools, markets, shopping malls, fuel stations were not opened for businesses, with vehicular movements grounded in the South-East region of the country. It said the action amounted to an offence contrary to and punishable under 1(2) (b) of the Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act, 2013. The Nigerian government equally lined up five witnesses to testify in the matter, including officials of the DSS and one Ronald S. who was identified as the manager of a hotel in Lagos State. ue 1 The No.10 is still searching for his first Ligue 1 goal following his summer arrival from Barcelona, so what's going wrong for the Argentine? When Lionel Messi hastily completed his summer move to Paris Saint-Germain on August 10, he probably did not expect that nearly three months on he would still be waiting for his first Ligue 1 goal. Adapting to the Champions League with his new side has not proven a problem. He has scored three goals in three games in Europe’s elite competition, introducing himself formally to the Parc des Princes crowd with a trademark run and shot into the top corner against Manchester City before netting a double in the comeback win over RB Leipzig. In domestic competition, though, he has yet to score. This is a run almost unparalleled in Messi’s career. Since the 2005-06 campaign, when he was still only 18, Messi has only once had to wait beyond matchday eight of any league season for his first league goal, in 2019-20, and even that was only because he missed the first five matches through injury. Admittedly, this time around, he has managed only 325 minutes spread over five appearances, but for a man who has grown used to scoring virtually every time he takes the field over his storied career, this represents a goal drought. “Ligue 1 is a more physical league, where games are hotly contested, where there is a lot of back and forth,” Messi told Sport this week. “The players are strong and fast. Physically, it changes a lot. “In Spain, all the teams try to play a lot more and they keep the ball from you if you don’t press well. The biggest difference, though, is physically.” Credit to Messi, he already has an excellent understanding of his new surroundings, and the reasons why he has yet to get off the mark in Ligue 1. Perhaps the most important is that, as he freely admits, he has not had proper time to adapt. Messi has played in back-to-back league matches only once this season, having missed six of PSG’s 12 games to date because of injury or international duty. His Ligue 1 debut against Reims in mid-September arrived when he was short of match sharpness, having previously played in the Copa America two months before, and it is fair to argue that he has yet to regain his edge. Even when he featured a fortnight ago against Lille, he did so with a minor injury that ultimately forced him off early. Furthermore, he is not being afforded the space he had become accustomed to in Spain. Opponents are far likelier to sit in a defensive bloc to combat PSG, offering the capital side's superstar forwards little room in which to work. Moreover, as Neymar has found to his cost, it is a division in which physicality is allowed to come to the fore. Beyond playing in a new league, though, Messi is discovering for the first time the challenge of playing for a new team. This has manifested itself in a change of position. He has come away from the middle of the field and shifted to the right of a 4-3-3 system, with Neymar on the left and Kylian Mbappe in the middle. Messi may no longer be the primary target for defenders to shut down but, equally, he is no longer the focal point for his team-mates to find. On average, he is touching the ball nearly 40 per cent less in Ligue 1 than he was with Barcelona in La Liga last season. He is also down in terms of shots and chances. The decreases may not be severe but Messi is clearly having to get used to being more peripheral. He learned in September that his Barcelona privileges wouldn't extend to PSG when he was substituted by Mauricio Pochettino with the game still in the balance against Lyon. Further to this, there is a valid argument to suggest that he has been a victim of PSG’s lack of identity. Head coach Pochettino has been criticised since the start of the season for lacking any clear ideas in terms of how he wants his side to play. This free-for-all approach has often left the team relying on the individualism of Mbappe to dig them out of problems, with this lack of coherence affecting fellow new arrival Georginio Wijnaldum. Away from the field, Messi has also explained the challenges of staying in Paris. “We spent a month and a half at a hotel and it’s not easy for the children,” he told Le Figaro. “In addition, we lived in the centre and in Paris the traffic is hellish. We needed an hour to take them to school and an hour to get them to training. “The children couldn’t stand being at the hotel any longer. It was hard. But at the same time, we tried to make the most of the city, which was good for everyone.” All these factors – the change of league, club and lifestyle – add up to make for a complicated start to life at PSG. Fans expecting Messi to score freely in what has been portrayed as a ‘Farmers’ League’ have been left sorely disappointed. Indeed, he will now do well to reach the 25-goal mark in league play that has been his staple since 2009. No-one is writing Messi off, but it is impossible to ignore that his start for PSG in Ligue 1 is not going as expected source:https://www.goal.com/en/news/messis-worst-start-in-15-years-why-is-paris-saint-germains/1m0rhd5lnm9g1edxh6ibeh64b

US embassy cables reveal top executive's claims that company 'knows everything' about key decisions in government ministries The oil giant Shell claimed it had inserted staff into all the main ministries of the Nigerian government, giving it access to politicians' every move in the oil-rich Niger Delta, according to a leaked US diplomatic cable. The company's top executive in Nigeria told US diplomats that Shell had seconded employees to every relevant department and so knew "everything that was being done in those ministries". She boasted that the Nigerian government had "forgotten" about the extent of Shell's infiltration and was unaware of how much the company knew about its deliberations. The cache of secret dispatches from Washington's embassies in Africa also revealed that the Anglo-Dutch oil firm swapped intelligence with the US, in one case providing US diplomats with the names of Nigerian politicians it suspected of supporting militant activity, and requesting information from the US on whether the militants had acquired anti-aircraft missiles. The latest revelations came on a day that saw hackers sympathetic to WikiLeaks target MasterCard and Visa over their decision to block payments to the whistleblowers' website. The website's founder, Julian Assange, spent a second night in jail after a judge refused him bail prior to an extradition hearing to face questioning over sexual assault charges in Sweden. Campaigners tonight said the revelation about Shell in Nigeria demonstrated the tangled links between the oil firm and politicians in the country where, despite billions of dollars in oil revenue, 70% of people live below the poverty line. Cables from Nigeria show how Ann Pickard, then Shell's vice-president for sub-Saharan Africa, sought to share intelligence with the US government on militant activity and business competition in the contested Niger Delta – and how, with some prescience, she seemed reluctant to open up because of a suspicion the US government was "leaky". But that did not prevent Pickard disclosing the company's reach into the Nigerian government when she met US ambassador Robin Renee Sanders, as recorded in a confidential memo from the US embassy in Abuja on 20 October 2009. At the meeting, Pickard related how the company had obtained a letter showing that the Nigerian government had invited bids for oil concessions from China. She said the minister of state for petroleum resources, Odein Ajumogobia, had denied the letter had been sent but Shell knew similar correspondence had taken place with China and Russia. The ambassador reported: "She said the GON [government of Nigeria] had forgotten that Shell had seconded people to all the relevant ministries and that Shell consequently had access to everything that was being done in those ministries." Nigeria is Africa's leading oil producer and the eighth biggest exporter in the world, accounting for 8% of US oil imports. Although a recent UN report largely exonerated the company, critics accuse Shell, the biggest operator in the delta, and other companies, of causing widespread pollution and environmental damage in the region. Militant groups engaged in hostage-taking and sabotage have proliferated. The WikiLeaks disclosure was today seized on by campaigners as evidence of Shell's vice-like grip on the country's oil wealth. "Shell and the government of Nigeria are two sides of the same coin," said Celestine AkpoBari, of Social Action Nigeria. "Shell is everywhere. They have an eye and an ear in every ministry of Nigeria. They have people on the payroll in every community, which is why they get away with everything. They are more powerful than the Nigerian government." The criticism was echoed by Ben Amunwa of the London-based oil watchdog Platform. "Shell claims to have nothing to do with Nigerian politics," he said. "In reality, Shell works deep inside the system, and has long exploited political channels in Nigeria to its own advantage." Nigeria tonight strenuously denied the claim. Levi Ajuonoma, a spokesman for the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, said: "Shell does not control the government of Nigeria and has never controlled the government of Nigeria. This cable is the mere interpretation of one individual. It is absolutely untrue, an absolute falsehood and utterly misleading. It is an attempt to demean the government and we will not stand for that. I don't think anybody will lose sleep over it." Another cable released today, from the US consulate in Lagos and dated 19 September 2008, claims that Pickard told US diplomats that two named regional politicians were behind unrest in the Rivers state. She also asked if the American diplomats had any intelligence on shipments of surface to air missiles (SAMs) to militants in the Niger Delta. "She claimed Shell has 'intelligence' that one to three SAMs may have been shipped to Nigerian militant groups, although she seemed somewhat sceptical of that information and wondered if such sensitive systems would last long in the harsh environment of the Niger Delta," the cable said. Pickard also said Shell had learned from the British government details of Russian energy company Gazprom's ambitions to enter the Nigerian market. In June last year, Gazprom signed a $2.5bn (£1.5bn) deal with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to build refineries, pipelines and gas power stations. Shell put a request to the US consulate for potentially sensitive intelligence about Gazprom, a possible rival, which she said had secured a promise from the Nigerian government of access to 17trn cubic feet of natural gas – roughly a tenth of Nigeria's entire reserves. "Pickard said that amount of gas was only available if the GON were to take concessions currently assigned to other oil companies and give them to Gazprom. She assumed Shell would be the GON's prime target." Pickard alleged that a conversation with a Nigerian government minister had been secretly recorded by the Russians. Shortly after the meeting in the minister's office she received a verbatim transcript of the meeting "from Russia", according to the memo. The cable concludes with the observation that the oil executive had tended to be guarded in discussion with US officials. "Pickard has repeatedly told us she does not like to talk to USG [US government] officials because the USG is 'leaky'." She may be concerned that ... bad news about Shell's Nigerian operations will leak out." Shell declined to comment on the allegations, saying: "You are seeking our views on a leaked cable allegedly containing information about a private conversation involving a Shell representative, but have declined to share this cable or to permit us sufficient time to obtain information from the person you say took part in the conversation on the part of Shell. In view of this, we cannot comment on the alleged contents of the cable, including the correctness or incorrectness of any statements you say it contains." |
Everton's Alex Iwobi extended his impressive goalscoring record against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Monday night. The Nigeria international got his side’s only goal as the Toffees bowed 2-1 to Bruno Lage’s Wolves at Molineux Stadium. Nevertheless, the rebound fell to the former Arsenal man, who drilled the ball into the bottom right corner of Jose Sa’s net in the 66th minute. Following his latest effort – his first of the 2021-22 Premier League campaign – the 25-year-old has now scored three times against Wolves, his most against any opposition in the tournament. Coincidentally, that was his first goal in 24 league appearances, with his previous strike coming in the exact fixture at Wolves in January last season. In the keenly contested affair, Iwobi lined up in the midfield alongside Cote d’Ivoire’s Jean-Philippe Gbamin, Allan and Andros Townsend. It proved to be a slow start for Rafael Benitez’s team, and they conceded first in the 28th minute through Max Kilman. Algeria prospect Rayan Ait-Nouri whipped a corner kick into the penalty area and the Englishman showed great desire to head past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Four minutes later, Mexico forward Raul Jimenez doubled the advantage for Lage’s side, slotting home from close range following a defensive error from Godfrey. Although the visitors pulled a goal back six minutes after the hour mark, they could not restore parity as they stumbled to their fourth defeat of the ongoing campaign. While Iwobi was in action from start to finish, Gbamin – who made just his second ever Premier League start for Everton in the Premier League, 807 days after his first (v Watford on August 17th 2019), the 14th longest gap between a first and second start in the competition for the same club - was subbed off for Fabian Delph in the 46th minute. Tenth-placed Everton would be hoping to return to winning ways when they welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Goodison Park on November 7.

Christian Pulisic's Chelsea career is being held back by a run of injuries that is threatening to put him to the back of a queue in one of the world's most competitive squads. His latest ankle knock is his third major setback since joining the Blues from Borussia Dortmund in 2019 for £58 million ($73m) – a record transfer for a US Men's National team player. Including a whole host of minor problems, the 23-year-old has now racked up an estimated 11 injuries during his two-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge, resulting in him missing 40 matches in all competitions for Chelsea. It is an incredibly frustrating situation not only for the player but also his club's medical team, who have constantly tried to resolve Pulisic's problems by carefully handling his workload and conditioning. However, they have, thus far, been unable to find any solutions, with his explosiveness always liable to lead to muscular injuries, while his agility and speed make him a moving target to be kicked by opposing players. The United States men's national team captain is, at least, close to making another comeback, having returned to training on Thursday, raising hopes that he could feature for Chelsea before the upcoming international break. Of course, Pulisic's latest injury occurred during his last appearance for his country, against Honduras in September. “He got injured by a foul, a tough foul, and he hurt his ankle," Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel explained when pressed on his winger's fitness issues. “There is nothing to worry about in terms of the specific details. We are not hiding details. But I cannot give you all of the details because I am not a doctor. "At the moment, though, he has had some setbacks from pain. Not from a major injury or complications. It is simply the pain in the ankle that disturbs him. Once these players with quick movements like Christian, once they feel this pain and they are not free in their movement, recovery doesn't happen. “You start all over again and you reach a certain point and the pain comes back. And you have to take a little break and start all over again. Christian Pulisic Thomas Tuchel quote GFX “So, right now, we are very, very close. He was so close to coming to training last week and had a little setback and reaction, with pain. Nothing serious, though. “He is very impatient, of course, and he does everything and we can see him suffer in every meeting. And every time we meet him here [at the training ground], he is really suffering and he wants to be on the pitch, helping us. "Everybody is doing their very best. Unfortunately, the injury takes its time.” Time is a precious commodity in football, though, and particularly at a club like Chelsea. Pulisic will obviously always be a key figure for his country. But, at Stamford Bridge, players are expendable. Things can change very quickly and while Pulisic is a highly valued and well-liked member of the squad, it is telling that Chelsea have been winning without him. The depth of talent available to Tuchel was underlined only last weekend when his side routed Norwich 7-0 at home in spite of the fact that their two starting forwards, Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner, missed the Premier League clash through injur. Remember, too, that Hakim Ziyech is struggling to overcome a shoulder problem, which has caused a dramatic dip in his form, and yet Chelsea are still finding ways to win matches. Why? Because other players are stepping up to the plate. Mason Mount hit a hat-trick against Norwich, while Callum Hudson-Odoi, who was arguably at the bottom of the pecking order before Pulisic's most recent injury, is showing signs that he is finally ready to realise his full potential in west London. Tuchel reveals Chelsea injury blow for 'fighter' Kovacic Pulisic, then, will be under immediate pressure to prove his worth to Tuchel when he does get back on the field. Under previous manager Frank Lampard, Pulisic clearly demonstrated that he can become a world-beater. His contribution over two legs in last season's Champions League semi-final win over Real Madrid was immense.

Documents released by WikiLeaks today shed light on a power struggle within the highest offices of the Catholic Church. Amongst the documents is a private letter written by Pope Francis. The existence of this letter, addressed to the papal envoy Cardinal Raymond Burke, has been the source of much speculation in the media [1]. It is now published for the first time in full and with the Pope’s signature. This letter concerns the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, also known as the Order of Malta or the Knights of Malta, originally founded in Jerusalem during the Crusades in 1099. As the name indicates, it has been widely recognised as a sovereign entity in itself despite theoretically being subject to papal authority as a Catholic institution. This ambiguous status cuts to the heart of the dispute as it reached a fever pitch after Pope Francis forced the abdication of Matthew Festing as Prince and Grand Master of the Order in January 2017. A month earlier Festing had dismissed the Order’s Grand Chancellor Albrecht Freiherr von Boeselager. The reason for the dismissal is said to be that Boeselager, who served as health minister for the Order, was held personally responsible for having approved funds for an aid mission in Africa that distributed condoms, amongst other things. This directly contravenes Church teachings on contraception and Festing was adamant that Boeselager be held responsible. Boeselager, however, appealed to Pope Francis, who in turn deeply undermined the Order’s independence and sovereignty by appointing a papal commission to investigate the matter and report back to the Holy See. Boeselager was subsequently reinstated at the same time as Festing was ousted. The papal letter, published by WikiLeaks today, shows the Pope was aware of and involved in the dispute since at least November 2016 when he met with Cardinal Burke. The Pope’s dramatic moves in January 2017 effectively abolished the sovereignty of the Order and have been described by its harshest critics as the annexation of one country (the Order) by another (the Holy See) [2]. Members of the Order even went so far as to challenge papal authority on the matter and refused to co-operate with the Vatican’s investigation [3]. This is seen by many observers as part of a larger power struggle between conservative and liberal elements within the Church, represented by Festing and Boeselager respectively (for example, [4]). Adding yet more intrigue to the tale are rumours that some high-ranking members of the Order have also attended Masonic lodges or other organisations deemed suspect by the Church [5]. Some of this seems to be confirmed by the Pope’s letter, which is dated 1 December 2016 (over a month before Boeselager was reinstated and Festing dismissed). In the letter Pope Francis states: “In particular, members of the Order must avoid secular and frivoulous (sic) behaviour, such as membership to associations, movements and organisations which are contrary to the Catholic faith and/or of a relativist nature.” He goes on to state that any members of such organisations need to be removed from the Order. Regarding the condom scandal at the heart of this matter, the Pope states: “I would be very disappointed if ‒ as you told me ‒ some of the high Officers were aware of practices such as the distribution of any type of contraceptive and have not yet intervened to end such things.” He further states that: “I have no doubts that by following the principle of Paul and speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15), the matter can be discussed with the Officers and the necessary rectification obtained.” The letter also confirms that Cardinal Burke had an audience with the Pope on 10 November 2016 to discuss the mounting crisis. This was before Boeselager was even removed by Festing. The text of the letter makes clear that the Pope was already committed to asserting his authority over the Order at this early stage. He writes: “Your Eminence, together with the leaders of the Order, will have to make ever more clear the close connection which unites the Sovereign Military Order of Malta to the Roman Pontiff, both from a structural and operational point-of-view.” Along with the Pope’s letter to Cardinal Burke, WikiLeaks has published several other documents relating to the dispute. These include internal communications and memos, some of which have been quoted in the media. https://wikileaks.org/popeorders/ |
