The youths disobeyed the orders of a politician (sitting governor of Lagos State) to disperse and opted to continue with their October Carnival at the toll plaza.

The youths and the opposition politicians maliciously exernalised a local protest through outright lies, misinformation and outrageous deceit leading to avoidable loss of lives and properties.

The youths either through inexperience or youthful exuberance invited, admitted or otherwise co-opted hooligans, political thugs, miscreants and other deplorables of the society to the October Carnival by feeding them.

It goes without saying that if the politicians elected by the youths fails or neglects to keep their end of the electoral bargain, it does not justify the consequent looting and destruction of the livelihood of innocent people all over the country. The youths should have waited for an opportunity to speak with one voice through their votes.

The current Agemos are 17 not 16. One of them apparently lost his powers.

Not quite true.

There are currently 16 titled Alagemos or Olojas in Ijebuland. In other words, these 16 Olojas are the ones that journeys from their respective abodes to Ijebu Ode every July- August each year; they carry charms luggage or loads; dance in raffia attires at Itooro, Ijebu Ode (except one that dances covered in mat). The other Agemos are merely priests. They carry no charms luggage and do not dance at Itooro. Among them are Ogi from Idogi in Ijebu Ode, the E(A)due from Ago Iwoye -there are 4 Agemos from Ago Iwo- Oru axis. Every other year some long forgotten Agemos priestly lineages suddenly reactivate and join the festival.

By the way, the popular "Alagemo merindinlogun" mantra by which the Ijebus are hailed was the handiwork of Ebenezer Obey (an Egba man) in one of his albums

Fun facts on Agemo masquerade:

1. Not unique to the Ijebus.

2. The original Agemos were 48 and NOT 16.

3. The Agemo did not originate with the migration of Obanta, it was the religion of the autochonous society he met at Ijebu.

4. Agemo is an harvest festival (mainly yam and corn) amongst the Ijebus.
