PoliticsNigeria Pays Ministers Higher Than US, UK, SA by Donmams(op): 1:47pm On Jul 26, 2013
Nigerian ministers receive higher salaries and allowances than their counterparts in Britain, United States, South Africa and other stronger economies, relative to the country’s wealth, according to an investigation by Daily Trust using official data from several sources.
A Nigerian minister soaks up N32 million (about $200,000) in yearly emoluments, more than 120 times the country’s gross domestic product per person (GDP).
This means that a minister picks up a package that equals over 120 times what each Nigerian citizen is worth when the nation’s total wealth is shared by the population.
In these terms, the cost of maintaining a minister here by far overtakes what obtainsin Singapore which pays the one of the highest packages globally. A Singaporean minister receives about N240 million yearly but this is only 28 times the country’s GDP per person.
A minister (secretary) in the United States is paid about N31.84 million yearly, a little less than the Nigerian ministerial package but amounting to just 3.9 times the GDP perperson in the US.
South Africa pays N31 million, while Australia pays N22 million to a minister amounting to 2.1 times of GDP per person inthat country.
Euro Zone’s biggest economy Germany paysabout the same amount as Nigeria, while Britain pays a slightly higher amount of cash of about N33million but this is only 2.4 times its GDP per person.
Nigerian ministers are even ahead of headsof government in very wealthy nations like Britain and France, whose Prime Ministers receive about N30 million yearly.
In Canada, a minister’s salary is 4.5 times the country’s GDP per capita, though he receives N38 million per annum - a higher amount of cash than Nigeria’s.
The gap is even more striking when the Nigerian minister is compared with his colleagues in less strong economies, like Ghana’s which pays N9 million to a minister - just 35 times its GDP per person.
The result of Daily Trust’s investigation on ministers’ perks is coming few days after the paper published details of similar fact-cat salaries enjoyed by senators and House of Representatives members which place them on the top spot in global MPs’ salaries chart.
According to records of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), a Nigerian minister of state receives N30 million ($189, 735) yearly in salaries and allowances, slightly less than his substantive cabinet minister.
With 30 ministers and 12 ministers of states in President Jonathan’s cabinet, the Federal Government spends more than N1.3billion yearly to maintain the ministers.
The senior and junior ministers receive about N960 million and N360 million per annum respectively in legitimate perks.
But RMAFC had said ministers illegally receive much more money, through frivolous trips, maintenance of fleet of vehicles and other costs.
Documents show that a minister receives an annual basic salary of N2 million, accommodation N4 million, vehicle loan N8 million, furniture allowance N6 million, utility N607, 920, vehicle maintenance N1.5 million, entertainment N911, 880 and leave allowance N202, 640.
The minister also receives N506, 600 for personal assistants, N1.5 million for domestic staff, N303, 960 for newspapers and N6 million as severance gratuity.
For their parts, ministers of state get each N1.9 million as basic salary, N3.9 million for accommodation, N7.7 million for vehicle loan, N5.8 million for furniture, N587, 274 for utility, N1.4 million for vehicle maintenance, N587, 274 for entertainment and N195,758 for leave allowance.
The junior ministers also receive N489, 395 for personal assistants, N1.4 million for domestic staff, N293, 637 for newspapers and N5.8 million as severance gratuity.
In addition, the minister is entitled to N35, 000 as duty tour allowance (DTA) while minister of state receives N30, 000 per day.For foreign trips, a minister receives $1,000 per day while a minister of state receives$900.

PoliticsTam David-West On Patience Jonathan by Donmams(op): 7:31pm On Jul 11, 2013
What is the interest of the President in a misunderstanding between Amaechi and his former chief of staff?

Patience, the President’s wife, hates Amaechi. Thanks to your magazine for its recent cover story, ‘Her Imperial Majesty’. It was a fantastic research. I am not talking about the first lady, I hate the word Your Excellency. Which Excellency? Have you ever heard Barack Obama’s wife being addressed as Her Excellency? Or David Cameron’s? We forget that the place of first lady is completely unconstitutional and irrelevant. I am happy the National Assembly stopped the N4b allocation proposed by Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory for construction of a building for African First Ladies Mission.

Why does Patience, who I don’t think is patient, hate Amaechi?

She hates Amaechi because she wants an Okrika man to be governor after Amaechi. Unfortunately for Patience, she is not restrained at all. She can say anything and do anything without inhibition. That is why I congratulate TheNEWS on that in-depth research. Mrs. Jonathan once embarrassed Amaechi at a public function in Okrika. That was uncivilised. I think without further delay, Patience should be humble enough to publicly tender an unreserved apology for that attitude because being a president’s wife doesn’t give her the licence to be rude. Who will take what Patience did? That shows how impatient she is and that shows you how much Amaechi has absorbed. She humiliates him everytime. Jonathan caused it because he can’t say no to whatever his wife says. He is a very weak husband and he is a very weak president. Whatever she says must happen. How can anybody read that well researched cover story of your magazine and feel glorified. If I were Mrs. Jonathan, after reading TheNEWS magazine, I’d leave Abuja and go on sabbatical for a long time. How can she face the public now with such revelations of her unconstitutionality? Whenever she goes out with her husband, she stays in front and the husband stays behind her. Nigeria should not take this and the earlier we rose to say this nonsense must stop, the better.

Wives have a lot of influence on their husbands. Most of the things Jonathan is doing are very wrong. President Jonathan is so obstructive. If she is good, she should be able to talk to her husband not to do things that are not good and always remind him that they should leave good legacies behind. Abdulsalami Abubakar’s wife advised her husband well. She went to university and law school. But this is a lady that ended in high school.
But she has a degree.

As far as my record shows, I don’t attach any degree to her, but if I am wrong, please, Reuben Abati, publish it and let me be educated. As far as I know, she did some secretarial studies or something. There is no record that says that Mrs. Jonathan is a graduate. I am saying that the excesses of Mrs. Jonathan can’t be a positive platform for her husband to be a president. In fact, in any other country, if you are unable to restrain your wife’s excesses, you are impeached and you go back to your village and stay.

What is your take on the way Patience Jonathan took over everywhere in Port Harcourt recently?

I was there. I witnessed it. I arrived the same day. Fortunately, I left the airport before they closed the road, but I saw the crowd gathering. It was a very obscene show of arrogance of power. As soon as I checked into my hotel, the sirens came. Even Amaechi couldn’t come out of Government House. Where did she get the money to build that big house she just built? There was heavy security and the neighbours were complaining. When I was leaving the airport, I counted at least 20 security cars. One of the policemen said: ‘Professor, hurry up before the superhuman being comes.”

Even the policemen were not happy.

A few people have suggested that first ladies should be assigned constitutional roles

It is sad. It is just like the agitation for assigning constitutional roles to traditional rulers. If constitutional roles are assigned to the traditional rulers, by the time the reality will dawn on us, it will take so long to reverse the disaster. It is better the way it is now. Any provision for traditional rulers is dangerous for Nigeria. The Oba I admire and adore in Yorubaland is Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III. He has given the royalty its due respect. He has not degraded and desecrated it. He is a king with magnetic brain. He is so brilliant. He is a good role model.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday described the killing of over 40 students and a teacher of Government Secondary School in Mamudo village, in Yobe State, as wicked, horrific and barbaric.

Jonathan, who spoke through the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, said that his administration will not be undermined by any group or persons.

According to him, any person who target innocent children as a result of emotional dyfunction will certainly burn in hell.

He sympathized with the affected families as he assured that the war against terror is still very much on course.

Jonathan was optimistic that his administration will see the end of terror in the country.

Describing terrorists as cowards, he said: “the killing is barbaric, completely wicked. Anybody who will target innocent children for any kind of grief of emotional dyfunction will certainly go to hell.”

The attackers, who stormed the boarding school about 3 a.m. on Saturday, were said to have set fire on the hostels which burnedthe victims alive as they were asleep.

The students that managed to escape from the fire were reportedly shot by the attackers.

Some of the injured students in critical conditions are being treated in hospitals in the state for varying degrees of burns.

PoliticsJonathan In Trouble: Middle Belt Witholds Support. by Donmams(op): 8:21am On Jul 05, 2013
Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang yesterday said the Middle Belt, under the aegis of Middle Belt Forum (MBF) will not support President Gooodluck Jonathan’s second term ambition until he decides to run.
Some elders of the Southsouth and Middle Belt under the aegis of Congress for Equalityand Change (CEC) led by Elderstatesman, Chief Edwin Clark and former Senate President, Ameh Ebute last month backed Jonathan’s ambition to retain his seat in 2015.
Speaking with State House correspondents at the end of a closed door meeting with Jonathan yesterday, Jang said the Middlebelt will only make its position known after the President makes his intentions known.
He said: “Southsouth forum is the zone of the President, so if they have started making the noise, it is good because he is "their"(read: sectional president) President, ours is to support. But you don’t start shouting before the man says this is where I am going.”
“So, when he talks, supposing he says he doesn’t want to go, so allow the man to talk. When he talks, (if people are supporting, we shall come out to support him),”(Read: GEJ is becoming unpopular) the Plateau governor said.
On the visit, the former Information Minister, Prof. Jerry Ghana said: “This session was designed for exchange of ideasin an interactive manner with Mr President. We brought leaders from 14 states in the Middle Belt.”
“We are very delighted and honored that the delegation was led by the former Governor of Plateau State, Chief Solomon Lar. Essentially, we came to see Mr. President to appreciate what he has been able to do so far as contained in his mid- term report.”
“We appreciated the area of achievement and we also pointed out areas that needed further attention so that their completion will give tremendous credibility to this government and also help those of us who are supporting the government from the part of the Middle Belt the credibility to speak about government.”
Also yesterday, the President promised that the Federal Government will monitor the disbursement of the N5.7 billion which was recently approved for victims of the 2011 post-election violence in nine states, astatement by the president’s spokesman, Dr Reuben Abati said.
Replying to concrns raised by the middle belters, led by Chief Lar, Prof. Jerry Gana andJang, Jonathan said the Federal Government will do all within its powers to ensure that the money goes to genuine victims.
“The Middle Belt has a key role to play in Nigeria. You have played a crucial role in keeping us united. I urge you to continue in that spirit,” Jonathan added.
Other members of the Middle Belt Forum included General Zamani Lekwot, Gen Joshua Dogonyaro, Gen Atom Kpera, Chief Fidelis Tapgun, Senator Ibrahim Mantu, Senator Jonathan Zwingina, Senator Ameh Ebute, Senator Joshua Dariye, Rev. Jolly Nyame, Gen Ishaya Bamaiyi, Dr. Bala Takaya, Ambassador Dan Suleiman, Hon. Margaret Ichei and Joe Gadzama.

Chris Brown is being accused of living up to his bad-boy reputation.

E! News has learned that the singer has been accused of assaulting a woman at a San Diego nightclub on Saturday evening.

The Anaheim Police Department confirmed that they received a phone call from a woman alleging that she was pushed by the rapper during his performance at Heat Ultra Lounge at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday night.

She claimed that she was pushed and injured, but did not meet with the police in person regarding the incident.

NEWS: Chris Brown's bachelor pad is not for sale

The investigation is currently ongoing, and police have not revealed the identity of the woman involved in the alleged incident.

E! News exclusively spoke with the operational manager at the nightclub who claimed to hear that Brown had "moved someone out of the way" after his set and that "perhaps the incident is being blown out of proportion."

Brown, apparently responding to reports of the incident, tweeted , "I didn't do anything." His tweet has since been deleted.

Earlier this month, the "Fine China" singer was in court to discuss discovery materials stemming from his 2009 assault case.

NEWS: Get details on Chris Brown's latest legal woes

The L.A. County District Attorney's Office had accused the Grammy winner of providing shoddy documentation concerning the 180 hours of community labor he supposedly completed as part of his sentence for assaulting Rihanna .

Per the current terms of his sentence, he is on probation until next summer. The judge set a preliminary hearing date for July 15 to determine whether they should move forward with a probation-violation charge.

No word yet on how the latest assault allegations may affect Brown's ongoing court case.

UPDATE: Heat management is standing by Brown, with Mike Joher of Royal Entertainment telling E! News in a statement that, based on information gathered from their security, mall security and other partygoers, "it is apparent that the alleged incident regarding Chris Brown is fales."

According to the club, Brown's accuser was trying to jump on the stage and "there was no way that he could have touched her, his section was roped off and he had heavy security surrounding him. Witnesses state that she was persistently trying to rush Chris" and was "eventually removed from the club."

Heat also alleges that the woman threw her shoes at club security as she was being escorted out and, while they thought about calling the cops, they allowed her to just leave.

Brown "was a complete gentleman and remained professional throughout the entire night," Joher concluded. "Neither I, nor any of the witnesses we spoke to, saw him push or touch anybody."

First Lady Patience Jonathan has slammed those describing her office as unconstitutionally, saying it cannot be separated from the Presidency.

The first lady, through her media aide, Ayo Oshinlu, was yesterday reacting to a newspaper editorial that criticised her for speaking from a podium with the nation’s official seal two years ago.

According to Mrs Jonathan, her office, just like American First Lady Michelle Obama’s, derives from the Presidency and has responsibilities to discharge, whether ceremonial or official, in order to “smoothen the operations of the president and the Presidency”.
