Croatia was just lucky to have scored the first goal, and then subsequently getting a penalty. I agree that the Nigerian team isn't formidable, but they tried. I think they played better than Croatia.

Russia 2018: Eagles squad valued N5.5b




Nigeria’s Super Eagles to the Russia 2018 World Cup is valued at $154 million which is in the region of N5.5 billion. This is according to a recent survey carried out on the 32 teams at this summer’s World Cup, which starts on Thursday in Moscow.

Using data from football data site Transfermarkt, analysts at Dutch bank ING have calculated that around £9 billion ($12 billion) will be on show at the tournament, with Spain being the most valuable team — it’s worth more than £900 million ($1.2 billion).

Though, Nigeria is the third highest valued team on the African continent, the Eagles are placed 19th according to the data with Egypt and Senegal valued at $231.4 million (17th) and $331.6 million (11th) respectively.

Big European and South American sides dominate the upper echelons of player worth, while minnows like Panama and Saudi Arabia dwell at the bottom end of the charts.

In fact, the world’s top three players — Neymar, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo — are worth more than the nine least valuable teams combined, ING calculated.

“Some say the football market is highly inflated — and it’s certainly astonishing to see the significant increase in team values from the last World Cup,” Ian Bright, a senior economist at ING said. “But whether you truly get value for money is a question that only fans can answer.”

Onazi dropped as Eagles’ vice captain


Contrary to the make-believe video that there are no squabble between John Obi Mikel and Ogenyi Onazi, Daily SunSports can exclusively report that all is still not well in the Super Eagles’ camp ahead of the World Cup.

Daily SunSports last night scooped that the Trabzonspor of Turkey midfielder has been dropped as Super Eagles’ assistant captain.



Our camp source hinted that national team manager, Gernot Rohr is not disposed to the appointment of a vice captain, saying the idea was counter productive to his plans ahead of the Mundial.

“Rohr has resolved to cancel the position of vice captain in the Super Eagles as it is believed to be one of the issues militating against the team.

“Mikel remains is the captain and have been told to hand over the captain’s band to the most senior player on the pitch whenever he is being substituted.

“By this pronouncement, Onazi ceased to be Super Eagles’ vice captain from now on,” the source revealed.
It was also gathered that due to Onazi attitude in camp, Mikel has asked for the player to be dropped but the Nigeria Football Federation fears a backlash as some players are believed to be loyal to him.

Onazi, according to our source may miss the first group game against Croatia as the technical crew would claim an injury prevented him from the tie.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles will fly out of their Avita Resort in Bad Tatzmannsdorf, Austria to Russia today for the 21st FIFA World Cup finals – their sixth appearance in seven finals since making a debut in the USA in 1994.

Since emerging from so called ‘Group of Death’ in the African qualifying series, becoming the first African team to reach the finals in Russia, the Eagles have played against Argentina, Poland, Serbia, DR Congo, England and Czech Republic in friendlies, winning two, drawing one and losing three.

Victories over two –time world champions, Argentina (finalists at the last finals in Brazil) and Poland were followed by defeat by Serbia, a draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo and losses to England and the Czech Republic.

Coach Gernot Rohr would be the first to admit that the statistics from these friendly encounters were not head –turning, but he insisted at the weekend, just as Captain Mikel Obi did few days earlier, that the underdog tag that had come as a result suit the three –time African champions nicely.

“We are okay with the garb of the underdog. But the defeats have done something for us – we have our heads firmly on our shoulders and we are focused.

“Together, we have reviewed the matches and learnt so many lessons. We will approach the World Cup matches differently,” said Rohr.


Nigeria’s first match is against Croatia on Saturday, with the Eagles logging a balanced record of having won their opening match at the World Cup on two occasions, drawn once and lost twice. On the three occasions they have not lost their opening match (1994, 1998, 2014), the Eagles had progressed to the Round of 16.

An underwhelming recent record, being the lowest –ranked team in Group D and the lowest –ranked African team in the finals, plus a recent tag by FIFA as mere ‘perennial World Cup appearance –makers’ all tend to project the Eagles as a side waiting to be rolled over.

That would be the biggest mistake of the so –called big teams.

Nigeria’s senior team has the knack for coming to the party when least expected. Lumped in a fiery assembly with Cameroon, Algeria and Zambia in the African qualifying race, the Eagles made short work of the pool, emerging run –away winners with a match to spare, and with the distinction of hammering African champions, Cameroon 4-0 in Uyo.

Dino Melaye backtracks; says Abiola’s GCFR honour well deserved


The Kogi West senator, Dino Melaye, has backtracked on his position that the Federal Government’s decision to honour presumed winner of the 1993 presidential election, Moshood Abiola, with Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) was wrong.

Clearly against his previous stance on the award, the senator now fully supports the decision which has continued to generate debates.

Mr Melaye featured prominently in news and social media posts in the past few days over his comment on the conferment.

At the Senate plenary on Thursday, he argued that the National Honours Act provides that such a honour be conferred on the recipient in person; and since Mr Abiola is dead, he cannot receive the award.

He added that the act provides that the honour be bestowed on Nigerians and since Mr Abiola is dead, “he is no longer Nigerian”.

“Subsection 2 of the act says a person shall be eligible for appointment to any rank or holder unless he is a citizen of Nigeria. A dead man is not a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We should not be emotional about this. The law remains the law.

“Subject to the next notice, a person shall be appointed to a particular rank of an order when the president receives him in person,” he said.

Mr Melaye’s comment was widely criticised by many Nigerians.

However, in a statement on Sunday, Mr Melaye backtracked, saying his previous comments were “misrepresented.”

He said his support for the award is unshaken as he had been clamouring for such years before.

“Since last two days, I have been inundated with calls and text messages from well-meaning Nigerians especially my constituents, who want to inquire my exact position on the declaration of June 12 as the new Democracy Day and the conferment of the highest National Honours of GCFR on the late Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election.

“For the avoidance of doubt, my views and belief on the sanctity of June 12 and the place of the late Chief MKO Abiola in Nigeria’s democratic history, have not changed and will not.

Hence, in my view, the decision by the Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari to honour the late business mogul was deserving and long overdue save for the attendant legal issues raised.

“It is a verifiable fact that I have canvassed for this recognition for Chief Abiola over the years, and granted interview to Channels Television two years ago, where I advocated for same.”

The lawmaker did not offer any clarification on his earlier statement on the “loss of citizenship of the deceased.”

He instead urged the federal government to work on what he said were legal encumbrances surrounding the decision and to alter the National Honours Act “to accomodate the new development.”

“Let me make also it abundantly clear that while both Chief Abiola and the late legal luminary, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN) deserved more than the GCFR and GCON Honours respectively to be bestowed on them posthumously next Tuesday, it is however important that the right thing be done in their memory should not have any blemish in the guise of the current debate for legality or otherwise of the historic Honours as we are witnessing now.

“I urge the federal government to do the needful and display sincerity of purpose by officially recognising Chief Abiola as President-elect and cause the official results of the June 12, 1993 presidential election to be released by INEC since President Buhari himself had admitted in the Presidential Order designating June 12 as Democracy Day, the most freest and credible election, and then the GCFR title will therefore have a meaning.

“If the right thing is done now by the federal government by proposing amendment to the National Honours Act 1964 to accommodate the current developments, no government in future will reverse the decision. This is my stand as a lawmaker,” Mr Melaye added.

Mr Melaye, a lawmaker under the platform of the ruling APC, has been in the eye of the storm lately after he was arraigned by the police over criminal allegations.

The lawmaker who consistently criticises the policies of the APC-led federal government was also recently charged for attempted suicide when he jumped off a moving police vehicle conveying him to his state, Kogi, to face criminal charges.

Reps In Rowdy Session Over June 12 Declaration, Ask Buhari To Honour Nwosu

A rowdy session has erupted in the House of Representatives over the declaration of June 12 as the new Democracy Day.

The plenary turned rowdy on Thursday when the lawmakers debated the powers of the Executive to make such pronunciation.

President Muhammadu Buhari had made the declaration in a statement on Wednesday that June 12 would replace May 29 as Democracy Day because it was a more symbolic day.

The announcement was to honour late MKO Abiola – the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election – whom the President also conferred a posthumous GCFR title on.

Lawmakers at the green chamber, however, questioned the legality of the Executive to make a pronouncement that goes against the Public Holiday Act, which gives power to parliament to prescribe public holidays.

After minutes of noise and disorderliness, calm was eventually restored in the House when the Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara, intervened in the matter.

The lawmakers further asked the President to honour the then Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Humphrey Nwosu, who conducted the election which many believe is the freest in the nation’s history.

Speaker Dogara consequently froze the debate and referred the matter to the House Committee on Justice, Rules and Business.

He directed them to review the matter and report to the House with an advice on the implications of President Buhari’s pronouncement to the Public Holiday Act.

Meanwhile, the matter received a warm welcome at the upper house of the National Assembly.

The Senate supported the declaration of June 12 as a public holiday but insisted that May 29 remains the day for the inauguration of a president and newly elected officers.

They asked the Federal Government to pay the entitlements due to Abiola’s family as president, and that of Professor Baba Gana Kingibe, his then running mate as vice president.

The lawmakers also urged the electoral umpire to declare the results of the June 12 election.

After Nike received 3 million pre-orders, Nigeria’s World Cup kit was officially released for sale on Friday, June 1. Outside NikeTown in London, fans lined down Oxford Street and round the corner to purchase the kit.

The kit, which was available for sale online quickly sold out with many buyers unable to add to their cart.

Nike UK also said there were no plans to restock.

The American sportswear company released the home and away jersey, a fan kit, a travel suit, a bucket cap and an anthem wear and Mercurial football boots as part of the collection.

However, fake replicas of the jersey has flooded the market before the official launch with reports claiming about 3 million of the fake jersey was already on sale. The home jersey which goes for about 41,000 naira in Nigeria was first worn in the friendly against Poland in March. The home jersey was worn again in the match against DR Congo.

The Super Eagles are likely to wear the home jersey in their friendly against England on Saturday. The jersey was rated as the best World Cup jersey in a poll conducted by Sky Sports and has been well received by non-Nigerians.

Trump scraps Kim summit, cites North Korea's 'open hostility'



(Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday called off a historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un scheduled for next month, even after North Korea followed through on a pledge to blow up tunnels at its nuclear test site.

Trump announced his abrupt withdrawal from what would have been a first-ever meeting between a serving U.S. president and a North Korean leader in Singapore on June 12 in a letter to Kim.

A White House official said a North Korean official's condemnation of U.S. Vice President Mike Pence as a "political dummy" was "the last straw" that led to cancelling the summit.

"Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it would be inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting," Trump wrote to Kim. "Please let this letter serve to represent that the Singapore summit, for the good of both parties, but to the detriment of the world, will not take place."

Trump called it "a missed opportunity" and said he still hoped to meet Kim someday. However, the chances for a quick rescheduling appear remote and cancellation of the summit will renew fears of a return to conflict on the Korean peninsula.

The North Korean mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump’s cancellation of the summit.

U.S. stocks dropped sharply on the news, with the benchmark S&P 500 Index falling more than half a percent in about 10 minutes. Investors turned to U.S. Treasury debt as a safe alternative, driving the yield on the 10-year note, which moves inversely to its price, down to a 10-day low and back below the psychologically important 3 percent level. The U.S. dollar also weakened broadly, particularly against the Japanese yen, which climbed to a two-week high against the greenback.

"You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God that they will never have to be used," he said.

Earlier on Thursday, North Korea had repeated a threat to pull out of the summit with Trump next month and warned it was prepared for a nuclear showdown with Washington if necessary.

DECADES OF TENSION

North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons has been a source of tension on the Korean peninsula for decades, as well as antagonism with Washington, but escalated into fears of war last year after North Korea said it had tested an H-bomb and developed a missile capable of hitting the United States.

The rhetoric reached war-like heights under Trump as he mocked Kim as "little rocket man" and in address at the United Nations threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea if necessary. Kim had called Trump mentally deranged and threatened to "tame" him with fire.

Kim rarely leaves North Korea and his willingness to meet and Trump's acceptance sparked hope but it had faded in recent days.

Trump's letter to Kim also referred to the possibility of war.

"You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God that they will never have to be used," he said.

The reference to Pence that offended the White House came in a statement released by North Korean media and citing Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui. She had called Pence a "political dummy" for comparing North Korea - a "nuclear weapons state" - to Libya, where Muammar Gaddafi gave up his unfinished nuclear development program, only to be later killed by NATO-backed fighters.

"Whether the U.S. will meet us at a meeting room or encounter us at nuclear-to-nuclear showdown is entirely dependent upon the decision and behavior of the United States," Choe said.

U.S. national security adviser John Bolton first advocated a Libya as a model of disarmament. That incensed North Korea, which said the reason it had its nuclear arms was to ensure it did not end up like Libya and its then-leader. Gaddafi gave up his unfinished nuclear program only to be later killed by NATO-backed fighters.

The White House official said back channels for discussions with North Korea remained open and there still was hope for peace but Pyongyang must first change its rhetoric.

SOUTH KOREA SURPRISED

South Korea's presidential Blue House appeared taken off guard by Trump's letter and an official said it was "trying to figure out what President Trump exactly meant."

South Korean President Moon Jae-in had met with Trump at the White House on Tuesday to urge him to follow through on the summit and not let a rare opportunity with reclusive North Korea slip away.

A few hours before Trump announced the cancellation, a small group of international media selected by North Korea witnessed the demolition of tunnels at the Punggye-ri site on Thursday, which Pyongyang said was proof of its commitment to end nuclear testing.

The apparent destruction of what North Korea said was its only nuclear test site has been widely welcomed as a positive, if largely symbolic, step toward resolving tension over its weapons. Kim has declared his nuclear force complete, amid speculation the site was obsolete anyway.

Cancellation of the summit denies Trump what supporters hoped could have been the biggest diplomatic achievement of his presidency, and one worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize.

Senator Bob Menendez, the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, said he had not had a sense that the administration had engaged in the detailed preparations necessary for a successful summit with Kim. He also suggested that recent rhetoric from top administration officials might not have been appropriate ahead of the meeting.

"I'm not sure that constantly quoting the Libya model is the diplomatic way to try to get to the results that we try to seek in North Korea," Menendez said at the start of a committee hearing with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The outlook for the Trump-Kim meeting had suffered a setback this month after North Korea angrily rejected the notion that would agree to unilateral nuclear disarmament as the United States has demanded.

Trump responded by raising his own doubts as to whether the summit would go forward but seeking to placate Kim by pledging that on Thursday that Kim’s security would be guaranteed in any deal.

At the same time, Trump insisted on concrete steps before any easing of sanctions and warned that failure to reach a denuclearization agreement could lead to "decimation" of Kim's rule.

Defense stocks got a lift from Trump's announcement, and the NYSE Arca Defense Index rose nearly 1 percent to near a record high. The advance was led by a 3 percent gain in military drone maker AeroVironment Inc, and major U.S. defense contractors such as Raytheon Co, Lockheed Martin Corp, General Dynamics Corp and Northrop Grumman Corp all moved higher.

Put it in another way, those that drink a bottle of coke immediately after opening it will have a different experience from those that drank theirs after it has been opened for 30 minutes.

For the discerning, you can understand the plight of Osinbajo. Nigeria's former finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala says she was bounced from Aso Villa under Goodluck Jonathan for not yielding to corruption.



For refusing to play ball, Nigeria’s former finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was locked out of the presidential villa during the dispensation of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Okonjo-Iweala disclosed this in her new book titled: ‘Fighting Corruption Is Dangerous’: The Story Behind The Headlines’.

After serving as finance minister during the Olusegun Obasanjo years, Okonjo-Iweala returned as Coordinating Minister of the Economy under Jonathan; a position she held from August 17, 2011 to May 29, 2015.

However, in her book, Okonjo-Iweala says it wasn’t always smooth sailing in the power corridors.

Barred from prayers
In one instance, an unnamed presidential aide who didn’t want a policy to take off because of vested interests, told her to back off.

When she didn’t heed his warning, she was barred from saying prayers with Jonathan and his family inside Aso Rock, like she had always done.

“The presidential aide told me that he wanted to convey a message to me that there were people not happy with the port reforms especially the abolishment of the Cargo Tracking Note (CTN). And he asked me, indeed advised me to reinstate it. I was dismayed”, Okonjo-Iweala writes.

She continued: “The fact that the matter has been brought to his attention meant that whoever the unhappy people were, they were influential. I explained the genesis of the port reforms, the situation of the presidential task force and the approvals for action given by the president.

“By implementing the reforms measures, we were just carrying out the presidential approvals. He said he understood but that I should nevertheless find a way to reinstate the CTN. I left his office very troubled. Being on the wrong side of (these kind of) people made me uneasy.

“I knew they could be consequences but I also knew that there was no going back on these important reforms. Clearly the $6 million from the Nigerian Ports Authority from the Cargo Tracking Note not being remitted to the treasury must be going into some influential pockets.

“The morning after meeting with the presidential aide, the consequences began to become clear. I was privileged that part of my daily routine was to join the president and his family and his few close friends in fellowship and morning prayers in the residential complex”.

Okonjo-Iweala says the villa gates were slammed against her after the conversation with Jonathan’s aide.

“That morning the gates remained firmly shut as I was told I could not go in. Taken aback I asked why, all I could get as a response was that they had received instructions not to let me in for morning prayers. I began to argue but realizing that it was fruitless, I returned home.

“By the third day, the security officers at the gate all of whom knew me well told me, ‘Honourable Minister Ma, I think you need to talk to the presidential aide, ‘they gave me the name of the aide and it was the same person who had asked me to restore the CTN”.

IMF boss embarrassed
Okonjo-Iweala details that she was embarrassed when the villa gates were again shut against her when IMF boss Christine Lagarde came visiting.

“After going to the gate and not allowed in for the fourth time, I pushed the situation to the back of my mind and turned to the preparations for the upcoming visit to Nigeria of the MD of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Madame Christine Lagarde, on Dec 18-20, 2011.

“She was scheduled to meet with the president on the final day of her visit December 20. There are usually many protocols and conventions to observe on high level visits especially when the visitor is accorded head of state’s status as Christine Lagarde was.

"One of these is for such dignitaries to enter the Villa for a meeting with the president through a gate designated for Heads of State only. Because Madame Lagarde was to use this gate, I had asked my staff to double check and ensure all was in order and I was reassured.

“But when the motorcade reached this gate it was denied entry. Embarrassed, I tried to find out from the security guards what was going on; they said they had no instructions for her to use that gate. And we should proceed to the entrance reserved for state governors.

“So I apologised to Madame Lagarde and told her there must be a mix up and asked the drivers to proceed to the other gate. When we got there, we were again denied entry. By this time it was clear to me that there was no misunderstanding but that this was deliberate.

“We were told to go back to the regular entrance used by everybody, park our car there and we'll have to walk, 5 min down the villa corridors which were long and leading to the president’s meeting room. Such treatment of such dignitary at the level of head of state was unheard of.

“Christine, clever as she is had figured out something was wrong but she didn’t know what. She handled it all with gaits and elegance telling me she didn’t really care which gate she went through or how far she had to walk as long as we met with the president.

“When the president enquired if everything was alright, she replied wittily, Mr. President there was a bit of a mix up about gates and we had to walk here. But it gives me the chance to see your beautiful Villa and its lovely gardens. The President looked puzzled but smiled”, Okonjo-Iweala wrote.

Okonjo-Iweala's career in government
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala served as Minister of Finance under Obasanjo from July 15, 2003 to June 21, 2006.

She also had a brief spell as Foreign Affairs Minister under Obasanjo from June 21, 2006 to August 30, 2006.

She is credited with achieving debt forgiveness for Nigeria under Obasanjo.

Okonjo-Iweala returned as Coordinating Minister of the Economy under Jonathan; a position she held from August 17, 2011 to May 29, 2015.

Nigeria frittered its oil wealth in Okonjo-Iweala’s second coming under Jonathan.

The former minister blames powerful State governors for her country’s inability to save; at a time when the price of oil in the global market hovered above the $100 mark.

Nigeria slipped into a recession a year after Okonjo-Iweala and Jonathan involuntarily left their jobs, thanks in large part to depleted reserves and plunging price of crude oil in the international market.

I don't know how you will use a sample of those who refuse to grow in grace to categorize the abundant number of of those who are living Christ like. This is laziness in thinking. For those who are vindictive, do you pray for them? Do you allow the light of Christ to flow through you to show a difference? Why do you think Jesus instructed us in this manner in Matthew 5: 38 - 48? Do you think he was referring to our relationship with unbelievers only?
