Kano Deputy Gov preempts impeachment notice, resigns from office

TED ODOGWU
5 AUG 2018
Ted Odogwu, Kano

Kano State Deputy Governor, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, on Sunday resigned from office, having been elected on the platform of the ruling, All Progressives Congress.

Abubakar resigned his position following hints that 31 members of the state House of Assembly had already signed his impeachment notice, scheduled to be tabled before the House on Monday for deliberations.

It should be recalled that Abubakar has been at loggerheads with his boss over some differences bordering on loyalty between the Gandujiyya and Kwankwasiyya groups.

In a letter dated August 1, 2018, addressed to Kano State Governor Abduallahi Umar Ganduje, Abubakar said, “I would have desired to remain up to the end of our tenure in order to fulfill the aspirations and expectations of the good people of Kano State as expressed in our joint ticket in 2015.

”But with the current and persistent irreconcilable differences on matters relating to governance and government operations, personal opinions and the concept of, and respect for democratic ideals and values, it would be unfair to my conscience, to the good people of Kano State and to you as the head of the Government to continue to remain in my position as the Deputy Governor.”

Abubakar will join his political godfather, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, who defected to the Peoples Democratic Party from the ruling APC.

Abubakar has been under pressure from the governor’s loyalists to resign or face impeachment.

Buhari fumes over APC Chair’s comment as Amaechi denies calling Oshiomhole bad-luck

ON JULY 25, 20186:31 PMIN NEWS, POLITICS197 COMMENTS …As By Johnbosco Agbakwuru ABUJA –

MINISTER of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi on Thursday denied ever saying that the All Progressives Congress, APC, national Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole was a bad luck to the party.

This is as Vanguard reliably gathered that some Ministers have frowned at the comment made by the APC national Chairman where he had threatened to expel cabinet members who disobeyed his directives from the party. But the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has said that any misgivings between the party and cabinet members will be resolved amicably.

Meantime, Comrade Oshiomhole was at the Presidential Villa, to see the President after the weekly Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting at the Council Chamber. Presidency sources revealed that President Buhari was not happy with the comment by his party’s national chairman where he said that if the President was condoning indiscipline from his cabinet he was not going to condone it.

“The President was not happy with the comment of the APC Chairman because it portrayed the President as inefficient,” the Presidency source had said. While berating the Labour Minister for not carrying out his directive that he (Ngige) should inaugurate the board of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, NSITF, Oshiomhole said, “If the minister refuses we will suspend him from the party. You know we must return to internal discipline. “For me it is the height of mischief for any minister, you cannot purport to be honourable minister and you act dishonourably and nobody is greater than the party. “And if the President condones disrespect for his office, I will not condone disrespect for the party. And when we expel the minister we will prevail on the president that he can’t keep in his cabinet people who have neither respect for his own decisions nor have respect for the party.”

Speaking while briefing State House correspondents after the FEC, meeting, the Minister of Transportation who interjected from the question to the Minister of Information on what was the position of the council on the face off between Oshiomhole and Ngige, said that there were many fake stories going around. Amaechi said, “How do you know it is true, I saw in social media this afternoon where they said I said the Chairman is a bad luck. I never said so . I have never said such a thing. They quoted me that I was attacking the Chairman.”

On his part, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said, “Two weeks ago, we launched a campaign against fake news and it is one of the most dangerous phenomenon we have today. “We don’t know who said what and until we know and the ministers confirmed this statement credited to them.It is a difficult time really. I can assure you if there is any problem between the party Chairman and any of our ministers, it will be resolved.”

On whether the defection of 15 senators and 37 House of Representatives members from the APC to the opposition political parties was discussed at the FEC meeting, Mohammed said, “no it was not discussed at FEC and secondly Mr President has already given our position which is that this is a democracy, people are free to make choices .”

NFF Crisis: Buhari has saved Nigeria from embarrassment, says Pinnick

As SSS chase Giwa out of NFF State Security Service agents Monday ejected the Nigeria Football Federation Chris Giwa faction from the Glasshouse headquarters of the NFF, following directives from President Muhamadu Buhari.

Pinnick and Giwa And an embattled Amaju Pinnick who was briefly banished by a Supreme court order enforced by Sports Minister Solomon Dalung was full of praise for the President for his good judgment and foresight, which prevented the country from being sanctioned by the world soccer governing body FIFA. “We must give all the credit to our President, Muhammadu Buhari, for acting to restore the leadership of the federation and saving the nation the embarrassment,” Pinnick said.

“Even as the situation persisted, I was very positive about his patriotic commitment to the best interest of the nation and his clarity of judgment to bring order to bear. “It is said that the sheep cannot be suffering the pangs of birth tied to the stake while elders are around.

He has demonstrated this fatherliness in so many ways across various sectors and now football is the latest beneficiary. We thank God for his life and for giving him to us.

“By his intervention, the nation has been saved the embarrassment, the world football community has been reassured of the high sense of responsibility of the government of Nigeria as a member of the international community and hope is brought back to thousands of Nigeria youths engaged in football as the various national teams can proceed on their various programmes without apprehension, the various leagues which were stopped under the circumstance can now get back to action while the confidence of the various sponsors, partners and investors in Nigeria football has been restored.”

He urged Nigerian football stakeholders to embrace peace and work for the overall progress of the country’s football and youths. “Football is about people, about unity. The game belongs to the fans and the pride belongs to the nation. The people are deprived when football is inhibited but with the action of the President, Nigerians can now enjoy what they love most.”

Pidgin, shorthand, causes of mass failure in English — WAEC

July 16, 2018
The Public Relations Officer of the West African Examination Council in Ghana, Agnes Teye Cudjoe, said the 2018 WASSCE Chief Examiner’s Report attributed the massive failure in English to the use of Pidgin language and short-hand by students.

According to WAEC, 193,882 candidates, representing 61.67% out of the total number who sat for the exams failed to obtain a pass mark to enable them to secure admissions into the university, reports Adomonline.

Provisional results released by WAEC indicated that 99,402 which represents (31%) obtained D7-E8 in the English Language, 94,607 which represents (30.09%) obtained D7-E8 in Mathematics, and 109,069 which represents (34.72%) also obtained D7-E8 in Integrated Science.

68,002, representing 21.61%, obtained F9 in English Language; 99,275 (31.58%), obtained F9 in Mathematics; and 46,367, representing 14.76%, had F9 in Integrated Science.

Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive Monday, Agnes Teye Cudjoe explained that although 2018 WASSCE saw an increase in the passes in Science compared to 2018, there was a total drop in passes in English and Maths.

She added that the 2018 Chief Examiners Report informed WAEC of a lack of vocabulary in the scripts of most of the candidates.

The 2018 Chief Examiners Report has recommended extensive reading for the students to help students build their vocabulary.

“You would agree with me that these days, our candidates hardly read, everybody is busy doing WhatsApp and all that. If students spend more time reading very good books, textbooks, Literature and English books they will improve and have command of the English Language.

According to MadamTeye Cudjoe, the report also urged teachers to give students more exercises on spelling drills, comprehension and summary to help students improve their Vocabulary.

“With respect to Mathematics, the 2018 Chief Examiners report revealed that the major challenge for the candidates was as a result of their inability to translate story problems into mathematical statements. The report also discovered that the candidates failed to answer questions on trigonometry and geometry”, she added.

Yakasai, Ezekwesili knock Buhari for ‘security racking brains’ comment

July 13, 2018
Olaleye Aluko, Abuja

A northern elder statesman and Chairman of the Northern Elders Council, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, has attacked President Muhammadu Buhari for saying his security chiefs are still racking their brains to tackle the ongoing killings in some parts of the country.

This is just as a former Minister of Education and co-Convener of the BringBack OurGirls movement, Mrs Oby Ezekwesili, also chided the President over the comment, saying Buhari was “detached from reality.”

The President had on Wednesday urged Nigerians to be patient with him as his administration made efforts to tackle ongoing killings in parts of the country.

Buhari, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, had said his security team were racking their brains to come up with a lasting solution.

The President had stated this while condemning the killings of scores of people, including a district head, in Gandi village in the Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto State by bandits.

Yakasai, in an interview on Thursday, said if the security agencies did not yet have a firm programme to tackle the killings, it was a bad omen for the 2019 elections which Nigerians were looking forward to.

He said, “I feel disappointed because all this while; is there no clear-cut strategy on how to deal with these problems? You know that it started with Zamfara, and moved on to Kaduna. Then it got to Plateau, and then to Nasarawa, Benue and the rest of the country. Is it now that they are thinking of strategies on how to deal with the issues? This is a very serious issue, particularly as we are approaching the elections in 2019.

“If we do not have a firm programme to deal with the situation in these states, what do we do when the election comes? I am honestly not impressed.

“I read what the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, said when he met with the President recently. He said the President was thinking of reorganising the security architecture. But what we heard from the Speaker is quite different from what the President is now saying. If the President wants to reorganise his security architecture, that means there must have been a blueprint on how to deal with the security situation. It is not a good commentary honestly.”

Meanwhile, on Twitter on Thursday, Ezekwesili criticised the President for asking for more patience.

She said, “Did he (Buhari) just say be patient? This is all we need as citizens to know that our President is very detached from the reality of what his people have been telling him to stop the killings. His security teams are racking their brains? This is too much.”

It's well acted, no doubt, but the thing that you thought was the MacGuffin turns out not to be. Like seriously, by the time you finish the film, you'll realise it didn't do anything. The premise, though, is cool. I really want to see more of Sofia Boutella kicking a$$ in other films. Sterling K. Brown needs a blockbuster. Oh and Dave Bautista should just keep on acting, he just keeps getting better. All in all, I can see this film flopping.
I just watched the trailer. I think it is a rip off from John Wick. Anyway, let us have the link when it comes out.
PoliticsGumi’s Pedagogy by Dotng(op): 5:32am On Jul 10, 2018
Gumi’s pedagogy

SHEIK Ahmed Gumi,a fiery Islamic preacher in an interview with a weekend Newspaper packed a lot of truth to power. His critical intervention at a time Nigeria lies prostrate at the intensive care unit of dying countries is the stuff of a great teacher showing up at a teachable moment .

Lovers of this country have pontificated in diverse ways on the need for Nigeria to tinker with its structure in order to have a governable country and create a productive polity where accelerated development would take place.

This has been rejected by the apostles of unitary rule who want to keep Nigeria as it is for the sake of command and control in subversion of the well being of the peoples of Nigeria. President Buhari as the número uno of the band of defenders of the status quo that has stripped Nigeria of its status lampooned advocates of restructuring while receiving some Urhobo Chiefs recently as people with “personal agenda.”

But hear Sheik Gumi teaching sense: “We need to bring people together. Nigeria has reached a stage to restructure. Restructuring is mandatory. We need leaders that people can trust. The masses are very skeptical about him(Buhari). If people have representatives, let’s restructure Nigeria and you will see how we can live as a nation.

We need a new crop of leadership.” In an April 8,2015 article in New York Times titled “Can Nigeria’s Former Dictator Become a Democrat ?,Max Siollun made the following observations. “In most countries, a 72-year-old retired general who once led a severe military dictatorship that imprisoned its opponents without trial, publicly executed convicts by firing squad, arrested journalists who criticised it, ran an Orwellian intelligence apparatus that bugged the phones of government ministers — a man whose overthrow three decades ago was welcome with relief by his countrymen, and who lost three consecutive presidential elections in 12 years — would be considered unelectable. But not in Nigeria.”

He concluded the piece by saying “Nigeria at the moment needs a reconstructive surgeon and not a bulldozer.” It would appear that bulldozing leadership paradigm it has been in the last three years and hence Gumi’s admonition. “But because of the problem that we have in Nigeria, we need a person that can truly unify the country, pacify and put the country together.

So, when I see a leader polarising or dividing the polity, no matter how he claims to be good, he is not good for the situation. You see, it is not every time you have a leader that is good for a situation. Every situation has its own remedy. We need in Nigeria a person who can listen and bring everybody together and also have a way of negotiating in the murky water of politics.”

One bizarre phenomenon has afflicted this country in the build -up to the last election till now in public discourse. It is the virus of a group of Internet thugs a.k.a Buharideens. They are not people who believe in arguments based on refined engagements.Every argument with them within two exchanges degenerate to “your father, your mother.” Sheik Gumi has some words for these elements: “Buhari is just a common man. He is just an ordinary one man in Nigeria. We cannot be hypocrites, hiding facts because of a man. Why are people shivering because of him because he has a team of illiterate, fanatical followers? We can deal with them. They should not hold us to ransom. He is a victim of this ignorant, unemployed and senseless followership. When politicians see that, they become frightened. We won’t succumb to that. Let’s do what is right. Put the right Nigerians to lead us, if not, we will destroy ourselves. We cannot be victims to these rascals.

When you try to correct the president, they come out in their millions trying to abuse you. They don’t even counteract your points with knowledge. If you think abusing us will deter us, you are mistaken. There is problem with and in the government. We have absolute failure in government. People are dying, things are not good.

We cannot continue this way. ….If you think the fault of a man should not be mentioned, because he is your hero, then you take him as a small god. Only God does not make mistakes. The idea that he should not be corrected; that he does not make mistakes is a deification which is wrong. It is imperative on us to speak out loud with anger about this kind of follower-ship. It is not healthy for our well-being. We cannot be subject to a cabal. What is the truth about what they call Buharism? It does not put food on my table, it does not educate my child, it does not provide security; so what are they talking about? What are his economic policies? How can we cage ourselves?”

Another fascinating point Gumi made in this national teaching is the imperative of modernisation in the North of Nigeria. He is North and therefore cannot be accused of putting down his region of the country. He only wants modernisation which Nigeria would be better off for when he said:”The northern region, even though supplied many leaders, has been backward. One of the reasons is the nature of the northern man. He has a psyche that is molded by the emirate system before the coming of the white man which is the absolute control.

In some places, you cannot even put on a very clean cloth because they will say you are competing with the king. The society has not changed. They feel that they are the new kings. An ordinary northern leader thinks of northerners as subjects. He does not want to improve their economic and social well being. For instance, it is high time we stopped this genuflection before the emirs.

They don’t have any power over us. We are human beings. They maintain the feeling that ‘I am superior, the others are subjects.’ They do not want to assist the region. This is the Northern psyche. Even though they have been ruling for a long time, the north has been backward. The masses have been looking for a messiah that will free them from this bondage”. I have interacted with a lot of friends from the North who are already in the world Gumi painted.

I have seen a lot of northerners rising to lead the charge against bad governance shattering the myth that an average northerner will support a leader from the north -good or bad. That tribe must increase! Nigerians generally do no scrutiny of those they want to employ as leaders. They do better job scrutinising and background checks on people they want to engage as drivers than they do of people they want to put in leadership position.

Gumi has some lesson for them on this: “You don’t give power to an angry man. Give somebody whose head is calm and can sit down and prioritise his development. Buhari came in angry and was trying to catch thieves and people were clapping for him. The time is gone. Fighting corruption is good but it should not become your slogan. It should not be your only political selling point.” Give it to Gumi for speaking out when it matters!

SportsAkanji Wears Eagles Jersey Amidst Dual Nationality Protests by Dotng(op): 5:17am On Jul 10, 2018
Akanji wears Eagles jersey amidst dual nationality protests

July 10, 2018
Festus Abu, St. Petersburg

Borussia Dortmund’s rising star Manuel Akanji could be gearing up for a battle with the Switzerland Football Federation following comments by the AFA General Secretary Alex Miescher suggesting the country would review its policy on players with dual citizenship.

Miescher joined the hot debate whether in the country whether the national team having many players with foreign roots truly reflect the country after the Red Crosses were sent packing from Russia 2018 World Cup after losing 1-0 to Sweden in their second round fixture at the Saint Petersburg Stadium on July 3.

And Swiss-born Nigerian AKanji, who is one of the revelations of Russia 2018, has subtly indicated that he is not ready to deny his Nigerian roots for the sake of playing for Switzerland by publicly identifying with the Super Eagles.

No fewer than 12 of the players who played for Switzerland in Russia were either born abroad or have immigrant parents.

Granit Xhaka and XherdanShaqiri , who are ethnic Albanians from Kosovo, were fined by FIFA for making hand gestures of an Albanian national symbol to celebrate goals in the 2-1 defeat of Serbia on July 6.

“That incident shows that there’s a problem. We have to ask ourselves: do we want dual nationals?,” Miescher was quoted by Tages-Anzeiger as saying.

He said the federation could offer its support programme for young players only to those who drop their second nationality.

The federation, who distanced themselves from Miescher’s comments, however said they had only been considering getting young players to give up their second nationality when joining the national team training programme.

The development has elicited a groundswell of criticism with football fans in the country taking to Twitter to make biting comments about the move to stop players with dual citizen from representing Switzerland.

Versatile Switzerland defender Akanji, who was born to a Nigerian father and a Swiss mother, has added fuel to the fire by posting his picture on his Instagrampage wearing the Super Eagles’ jersey in Ibiza, Spain, where he has been holidaying since the Swiss crashed out of the World Cup.

The 22-year-old wrote, “There were so many emotions during this World Cup, ups and downs, but in the end I‘m really proud and happy to have played my first World Cup. I hope it wasn‘t the last one, thank you Switzerland for the support. We will come back stronger.”

Although Akanji did comment on the issue of dual citizenship, he has been under criticism in the social media and Swiss press for his Instagram post.

Some of his critics have questioned his loyalty, though they condemn the football federation for its move.

Tam David-West: If The People Are Happy, One Million Obasanjos Can’t Stop Buhari

sor Tam David-West, a diehard supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari and former Minister of Petroleum and Energy, says although things can change quickly in a few months, he would not, at the moment, wish for Buhari to return for a second term I office.

Speaking in an interview with The Sun, however, David-West said he would not toe the line of “professional letter writers”, such as Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida, who are telling the President outright not to seek a second term.

He noted that if Buhari can make the people happy in the coming months, a million Obasanjos or Babangidas can’t stop him from winning a second term.

“It is not true. It does not necessarily follow. Do I want Buhari to win second term? Yes and no. Yes, because I don’t associate myself with the theatricals of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida, and Theophilus Danjuma. If people think he is doing well, they will vote for him. If people think he has not done well, they won’t vote for him,” he said.

“But immediately you have people who are professional letter writers, trying to make sure, who are you to tell Buhari not to seek second term? You once sought third term. He who goes to equity must have clean hands. Obasanjo is not qualified at all to tell Buhari not to seek second term. When you were seeking third term, they wanted to change the constitution for you.

“And my answer is ‘no’ because things must improve. I know that within few months, a government can make purposeful impact. Right now, why I am saying ‘no’ is that I ask myself as a supporter of Buhari: Are the people happy? A good friend is not one who praises you, but the one who tells you the truth. There is no question that people are not happy. There is no question that the economy is not doing well. There is no question that a lot of people are suffering. So, if he wants to run for a second term, it will be on his ticket.

“Nobody imposed Buhari on Nigerians. People voted for him. Get the ticket first and when you take the ticket, let the people be happy. Where there are areas of discontent and concerns, try to take active steps to correct them so that you can give greater happiness to greater number. When Nigerians are happy, they will vote for you. One million Obasanjos cannot stop them. When Nigerians are happy, one million Danjuma and Babangida cannot stop them. They will vote for you. Nigerians are not fools. When you are doing well, they will vote for you.”

The NFF boss oversees the Africa Cup of Nations committee which will see him in charge of the organization of all nations cup tournaments. Former CAF President Issa Hayatou chaired the last AFCON committee. Pinnick also holds the leadership baton of the Media committee of the continental football body.

He is also a member of the Organising Committee of the World Cup and has been in charge of many World Cup matches ongoing in Russia. Following the disquiet in the Nigerian football house, Amaju had ignored all pleas not to talk about it.

If England win the World Cup we won't have a rest. Premier League commentary will be like:
"World Cup winner Jordan Henderson wins the tackle"

"Eric Dier who won the World Cup passes the ball forward"

"Young World cup winner Rashford makes a run behind the defense"

Ashley Young who helped England win the World Cup falls down under a challenge from Van Dijk, whose country didn't even make it to Russia...

This is where I d say the coach was stupid. He should have played someone else instead of Mikel. Of all the players on the pitch that day, Mikel was the least motivated to continue playing in the world cup in Russia. Even if we had advanced, he would have flown back to Naija to sort out things.

While I dont blame him, he played most of his passes backwards. He could not motivate the team to hangon till the end. And to the people that kidnapped his dad, all doors to their success in life will be shut! unless they repent.
Did you read where he said he did not inform the coach. It is not by force to comment. Just read and pass. cry

This is a joke! Some people are toying with FIFA ban. By the time they ban the country for the next four years all your eyes will clear. No court has jurisdiction on football affairs. Go and look for somewhere to play your politics. After FIFA has recognised Amaju and he has the support of CAF president you fellows are just joking.

Killings in Berom LG Has been going since late 90's. It did not start with President Buhari, as some useless pigs and their sponsors will want you to believe.

While we urge Mr. President to find lasting solution to the crisis, we all should be guided well as not to play into the hands of 2015 election losers who depend solely on the killings of their fellow countrymen as a means of reclaiming power.
You are quite right about the italicised and that is one of the principal reasons Jonathan was voted out. What is the value of a leader that cannot solve problems? In other climes, the leaders would resign or be forced to. There is no justification for the president to continue to be in office if he cannot provide leadership in the area of security of lives and property especially if he cannot compel his appointees to do their job. The seat of the presidency is not the inheritance of anyone or a retirement plan. If you merit the seat you will be elected.

Before I think hard to remember old action movies for you, I'll like to suggest this movie that I love so much. I watched it many years ago, around 8 years ago, but it's one of my favourite movies of all time despite it not generating enough buzz like so many other high grossing movie. It leaves me with nostalgia.

The movie's name is Mindhunters. Very interesting. It's about a group of FBI profilers being killed systematically by someone. Download it and watch, and after the first kill, try to guess who was the killer and write your reason somewhere (I don't want you to do guesswork and get the correct killer). I can assure you that you'll never guess the killer correctly with good reason till the end. grin grin

I'm coming with the list. Let me think.

If anyone is interested, watch the movie too.
I will look it up.
SportsNigeria Captain Mikel Slams Croatia Decision To Rest Star Players by Dotng(op): 10:25pm On Jun 22, 2018
Nigeria captain Mikel slams Croatia decision to rest star players

The Super Eagles could find themselves relying on the Group D leaders - who plan to leave big names out against Iceland - to reach the knockout stages.

Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel has called on Croatia to be professional and not rest players against Iceland in a match that could yet decide the Super Eagles' World Cup fate.

Two goals from Ahmed Musa ensured Nigeria remain in the hunt for a place in the knockout stages as they saw off Iceland in Volgograd.

Gernot Rohr's side now know that a victory over Argentina in Saint Petersburg will be enough for them to reach the last 16 for the fourth time in their history.

And though a defeat to the Albiceleste would confirm their elimination, a draw would mean they require Croatia to do them a favour against Iceland.

Croatia have already booked their place in the latter stages of the competition, and as such manager Zlatko Dalic has vowed to leave out some of his star players in a bid to conserve their fitness.

Mikel, though, does not understand the reasoning behind Dalic's decision and feels it is unfair on the rest of the teams in the group.

"I don't think it's the best thing to do," he told Goal. "This is a massive tournament - you can't rest people and give others a chance of qualification.

"They should be professional and play their best team. This is such a big stage that you can't rest players just to help other teams to qualify."

Nigeria have faced Argentina four times in their previous five World Cup appearances, losing on all four occasions, but the form of the South American outfit have raised hopes that the Super Eagles can end that run.

Despite having Lionel Messi in their number, Jorge Sampaoli's side have picked up just one point from their two games thus far, including an embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Croatia on Thursday.

However, Mikel is aware that recording the victory his side require will be no easy task.

"I think they have played well. It's going to be a tough and difficult game for us."

Both Nigeria's clash with Argentina and Iceland's match with Croatia take place simultaneously at 7:00pm BST (2:00pm ET) on Tuesday June 26.

PoliticsEXCLUSIVE: Seychelles Begins Probe Of Saraki, Wife, For Alleged Money Laundering by Dotng(op): 8:06pm On Jun 22, 2018
EXCLUSIVE: Seychelles begins probe of Saraki, wife, for alleged money laundering

Authorities in Seychelles have opened a criminal investigation into the multi-million dollar assets which Senate President Bukola Saraki and his wife, Toyin, are believed to hold through offshore shell companies in tax havens, PREMIUM TIMES can report.

Bukola and Toyin Saraki are being targeted by financial intelligence operatives for their “suspicious” use of offshore shell companies as uncovered in the Panama Papers investigation published in 2016, according to new records obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and shared with PREMIUM TIMES and other partners.

Investigators at the Seychelles Financial Intelligence Unit said they are interested in determining whether or not Mrs Saraki stood as a front for her husband in the ownership of some of the offshore holdings linked to the family when a trove of offshore assets managed by Panamanian law firm, Mossack Fonseca, was leaked to the media.

The investigators are also working to determine if the transactions undertaken with the shell companies were used to launder funds or carry out other suspicious activities.

Two weeks after the Sarakis were exposed as owning undeclared offshore assets in violation of Nigeria’s code of conduct regulations, detectives from that country’s FIU asked Mossack Fonseca to furnish them with all documents relating to Sandon Developments Ltd, a firm registered in Seychelles under Toyin Saraki’s name.

Mossack Fonseca responded to the request on April 29, 2016, by forwarding a link to the PREMIUM TIMES article on the Panama Papers as well as all documents relating to Sandon Ltd, including international passports and business activities.

The status of the investigation, however remained unclear as there is no record of any update about it since Mossack Fonseca responded to the authorities’ requests at the end of April 2016.

Mrs Saraki registered Sandon Ltd in 2011 and used it to buy a family property at #8 Whittaker Street, Belgravia, London SW1W 8JQ.

Mr Saraki denied links to the offshore assets in 2016, saying they belonged to his wife’s family. But information obtained by PREMIUM TIMES at the time indicated that the Senate President merely used his wife as a front, and Seychelles authorities also found the denial unconvincing.

The revelations were amongst the findings of a lengthy investigation by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung and more than 100 other global news organizations – including PREMIUM TIMES.

PREMIUM TIMES was the only Nigerian publication involved in the investigation, which lasted a year before the first set of stories started running on April 3.

For two weeks, Yusuph Olaniyonu, a spokesperson for Mr Saraki, did not return PREMIUM TIMES requests for comments about the criminal investigation of his principal and spouse in Seychelles.

Nigerian authorities had previously stated that they were investigating Mr Saraki’s offshore assets that were not declared in contravention of the law, but no charges have been brought against him.

Offshore shell entities are not necessarily fraudulent. There are legitimate uses for them by businesspersons across the world, but several other people, including criminals, have used them for untoward activities.

When Mrs Saraki registered Sandon Ltd on January 12, 2011 in Seychelles, she listed Babatunde Morakinyo, a long-term personal aide and friend of Mr Saraki, as a shareholder.

Mr Morakinyo was amongst the top aides of Mr Saraki who were identified by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as laundering billions of naira in suspected bribes from the Paris Club refund to Nigerian states in 2017.

While incorporating that Sandon Ltd, documents show, Mrs Saraki bought a curious service from Mosshich she tucked the hidden assets.

PREMIUM TIMES further reported at the time that Sarakis used nominee directors in order to perhaps avoid being identified as the beneficial owner of Sandon. Nominee directors are sometimes used in tax havens to conceal real owners of companies and assets.

She then made an undertaking indemnifying the Panamanian company “in respect of all claims, demands, actions, suits, proceedings, costs and expenses whatsoever as may be incurred or become payable by you in respect of or arising out of any member or employee or associate of your company or associated companies holding any office, directorship or shareholdings in the company or by reason of or in consequence of any act or decision made by any such person or company in connection with the management and/or administration of the said company.”

Shortly after the company was incorporated, Mrs. Saraki used it, in July 2011, to buy the property on Whuttaker Street, Belgravia, London SW1W 8JQ.

The property, acquired from Renocon Property Limited, a company registered in the British Virgin Island, was never disclosed to Nigerian authorities as required by the country’s code of conduct law.

The revelations came at the time Mr Saraki was being tried by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) for failing to properly declare his local assets when he became governor in 2003, 2007 and when he moved to the Senate in 2011, having completed the two terms allowed under the Constitution.

In June 2017, the CCT found Mr. Saraki not guilty on all the 18 counts of false assets filings as brought against him by the Nigerian government.

The Nigerian government challenged the ruling at the Court of Appeal, which affirmed the conclusion of the tribunal on all but three counts in a December 12 ruling. Mr Saraki appealed the decision to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to deliver its judgment in the appeal on July 6.

Why can't we EVER hire top class coaches like Carlos Quieroz, Oscar Tabarez and even Hector Cuper?

I watched the Iranians play against Spain yesterday and I was mightily impressed. They were so organized without the ball and lightning on the counter.

I was paying a keen attention to their defensive block. They defended in two organized, flexible blocks of 4 with 2 pressing the ball. Once Spain moved their shape, one of the pressers drops back and allow someone else to step up. It was so frustrating for Spain.

The thing is Nigeria even has more recognized players than this Iran. We mainly lack a coach with the tactical nous to make our boys function as a well-oiled unit.
Do you know how long the Iranian coach has been with them? He qualified them for 2014 World Cup and also this 2018 world cup. With our mentality we may decide to sack Rhor for any cause after this world cup.

Don’t return home if you lose to Nigeria, Maradona warns Argentina coach

ARGENTINA Legend Diego Maradona has issued a scathing assessment of his country’s World Cup draw with Iceland, warning manager Jorge Sampaoli that he would not be welcome back home unless he changes his tactics.

Argentina got a rude shock in their opening match against Iceland and need to win their remaining matches against Croatia and Nigeria to be able to avoid the disgrace of an early exit from the Russia World Cup.

“Playing like that, he can’t come back to Argentina,” the 1986 World Cup winner told Venezuelan television. “It’s a disgrace. Not having prepared for the match knowing that Iceland are all 1.90m tall… I get the feeling there’s a general anger at the heart of the team,” said Maradona. Maradona said that the road to qualification is difficult pointing Nigeria as a stubborn opponent that may stop them in their last qualification match. ‘’The Nigerians are young and very fast. Their counter-attacks and pace are a beauty to behold. I wonder how Sampaoli do it. All I know is that he would not be welcomed back to Argentina if he does not guide Argentina to beat Croatia and Nigeria to qualify.” Argentina play Croatia in their next game in Saint Petersburg on 21 June.
