Crime › US Customs Agents Seize $40K From Nigerian Traveler At BWI by dridowu(op): 7:36pm On Aug 25, 2015
LINTHICUM, Md. (AP) — Customs and Border Patrol agents have seized more than $40,000 in unreported currency from a Nigerian traveler at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

The Department of Homeland Security announced Monday that the man who arrived at BWI on a flight from London on Sunday initially declared that he had $5,000. The man later amended that to $22,000, but officials say customs agents ultimately discovered more than $42,700 on the man and in his luggage. The money was seized and the man was advised on how to file a petition for the return of the currency. He has not been charged with a crime.

There’s no limit on how much currency travelers can import and export, but they must report amounts larger than $10,000.

Travel › Four Nigerians In Arrested Jakarta Over Proper Stay Permits by dridowu(op): 3:47pm On Aug 25, 2015
Jakarta. An immigration office in Jakarta on Tuesday arrested four Nigerian nationals without proper stay permits at an apartment complex in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta.

Hambali Haryadinata, head of the North Jakarta Immigration Office, said that officers on Tuesday morning had raided the apartment units of the four Nigerians, identified as VC, DC, CF, and FU, after receiving reports over suspicious activities from other residents.

"During the operation, we asked them to present their passports and visas but instead they tried to escape and officers immediately apprehended them," said Hambali at his office.

Officials did not find any drugs during the raid, but confiscated five laptops, five mobile phones, two USB modem sticks, three sim cards, two wallets and a sum of cash.

According to Hambali, the four Nigerians confessed that they had come to Indonesia to do business but declined to provide further details.

"We haven't found any leads for other crimes. For now, they are under suspicion of having violated the immigration law," said Hambali, referring to the 2011 Immigration Law.

The four Nigerians could face three months imprisonment and a total of Rp 25 million ($1,770) in fines, he said.

I just knew efforts to hound this lady out of office would start. The moment she dared to speak out against public fund mismanagement that has led to the current state of indebtedness to civil servants in the state, I knew they were going to start throwing dirty bombs. Why can't our leaders ever own up to wrongdoing and accept criticism? That is how Amosun sacked teachers for honest but apparently offensive (to him) exam questions.
i agree with you yet i disagree with you. No one is throwing dirt at her , if she comes out clean from the allegation of snatching husband then she just shame APC but if it is other way round then she shame herself, her family, her children, her friends in short almost everybody that surround her.

Politics › Fayose Wants South West To Produce Next PDP Chairman by dridowu(op): 7:43pm On Aug 24, 2015
Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has
called for the zoning of the National
Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party to the
South-West region of the country.
According to him, it was the turn of the
region to produce the chairman since
presidency would return to the North in the
next general elections.
He spoke when an Ex-minister of the
Federal Capital Territory, Bala Mohammed,
paid him a visit on Sunday night to consult
him on his ambition to become the National
Chairman.
Mohammed, who was in Ekiti in company
with Ambassador Liya Damagon and a former
Special Adviser on Political Matters to Ex-
President Goodluck Jonathan, Ahmed Gulak,
met with Fayose behind closed-doors in Ado
Ekiti.
Asked if he was in Ekiti over his ambition
to contest for the seat, Mohammed said it
was no longer news that he was contesting
for the post.
Speaking with newsmen, Fayose said that
the time was not right for the party to
have a substantive chairman and that the
present care-taker Chairman, Mr. Uche
Secondus, should take charge for the next
five months to conclude the on-going
reorganisation in the party.
Fayose said, “I think the party needs the
caretaker committee now rather than a
substantive chairman.
“What I also wish to say again is that for
me, it is the turn of the Souh-West to be
the national chairman of the party.
“The South-west and the South-South have
had their turns (presidency) and of course
the next presidential candidate of the party
would be from the north. So I believe it is
the turn of the South-West to have the
National Chairman. We have to allow the
north in the party to begin to search for a
credible presidential candidate for the
party,” he said.
“Secondly, we need somebody who could
take his time and use this interregnum and
put the party into proper position. We do
not need somebody who is trying to just
finish the tenure of a former leader.
“The time we are now is quite a challenging
time and it is not a time for someone to say
he wants to just complete a tenure. We
should allow the caretaker committee to
take over and put proper elections in place
for new executives of the party.
“You would recall that I told Muazu he
has to go and he’s gone now. This time we
must entrust the party into the hands of
credible people who would not use it to
redeem their name or for personal gains. So,
to me, there isn’t much that a substantive
chairman can do in just five months now,”
Fayose said.

Crime › Nigerian Hid 15kg Of Suspected Ivory Inside This Tailor-made Vest In Hong Kong by dridowu(op): 6:55pm On Aug 24, 2015
A 42-year-old traveller from Nigeria was arrested at Hong Kong International Airport with 15kg of suspected ivory products stashed inside the pockets of a tailor-made vest.

He arrived in the city from Abuja, Nigeria, via Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, on Monday morning.

"During customs clearance, customs officers found about 15kg of suspected ivory pieces and products concealed in a tailor-made vest inside his hand baggage," the Customs and Excise Department said.

The haul was estimated to be worth HK$150,000 in Hong Kong and the man may face prosecution for importing an endangered species, the department said.

The suspect’s hand baggage was seized alongside about HK50,000 worth of ivory products.

Officers handed the case to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for further investigation. The conservation department oversees ivory matters in the city.

It was the third seizure by customs officers at the airport in a month. On August 7, an 18-year-old man arriving from Harare, Zimbabwe, was arrested with 15kg of ivory products.

On July 27, officers caught a 27-year-old man who had arrived from Lagos, Nigeria, and seized HK$150,000 worth of ivory tusks and ivory products. He was convicted of importing an endangered species and fined HK$62,000.

A state-run newspaper reported in April that a syndicate behind ivory smuggling provided a "baby rental" service as a cover to help its smugglers receive less scrutiny while crossing into the mainland from Hong Kong.

The tactic was revealed after a Hong Kong woman was arrested at a checkpoint as she tried to smuggle 24 ivory products into Shenzhen. She was carrying her own baby when arrested.

Crime › Vietnam Seizes 2.3 Tons Of Elephant Tusks Inside Nigerian Wood Shipment by dridowu(op): 6:54pm On Aug 22, 2015
Police and customs officers in Da Nang on Friday seized more than two metric tons of elephant tusks inside a timber container from Nigeria.
Officers said the tusks were hidden in many bags buried deep under more than a thousand wood logs.
The shipment arrived at Tien Sa Port in the central city on August 11.
Vietnam has banned ivory trade since the 1990s, and yet it has been fueled by the rising affluence in recent years and the demand for using ivories for decoration.
Officers said the tusks can sell for around VND100 billion (US$4.44 million) on the black market.
The invoice named a local business as the receiver of the shipment.
The company was earlier named as the recipient of a Mozambique shipment which was seized by Da Nang customs on August 13 for containing nearly 750 kilograms of elephant tusks and rhino horns.
Both products are strictly banned from commercial use worldwide to protect the endangered animals.
The company has denied responsibility.
