Politics › Re: FG Writes US Over Possible Drone Strikes On Nigerian Soil by drnoel:
youngies: IN what seems like a tacit partial surrender of the nation’s sovereignty to the United States of America, the Nigerian Embassy in the US yesterday formally wrote to the US State Department to appeal that in the event of a US attack on targeted Boko Haram insurgents, on Nigerian soil, their innocent immediate neighbours should not be harmed.

The development comes as the Catholic Bishop Of Sokoto Diocese, Dr. Hassan Kukah, reiterated his call for dialogue with the Boko Haram sect, even while urging improved intelligence gathering.

The US had, on Thursday, placed three Boko Haram leaders—- Abubakar Shekau, Abubakar Adam Kambar and Khalid al-Barnawi—- on its terror list.

The letter from the Nigerian Embassy reads: “The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria presents its compliments to the Unites States Department of State and has the honour to acknowledge the news of the implementation of Section 1B Executive Order 13224 by which the State Department declared Abubakar Shekau, Abubakar Adam Kambar and Khalid al-Barnawi as specially Designated Global Terrorists. The designation according to the Order is designed to diminish the capacity of these men who are members of Boko Haram to execute violent attacks.

“While the facts contained in the Order are not in dispute, the Embassy hereby expresses its sadness that the Boko Haram episode has led to such a declaration.

“The Embassy however wishes to assure that the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is firmly resolved in its determination to bring an end to the destructive activities of this group. We shall continue our efforts in this direction with the active cooperation and assistance of our friends and allies especially our host government.

“The Embassy however wishes to appeal that whatever action that is eventually taken against these individuals, their immediate neighbours who have felt most the impact, but are very much vehemently opposed to the activities of Boko Hararn, should not be affected.

“The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria avails itself of this opportunity to renew to the United States Department of State, the assurances of its highest consideration.”

Military actions against terrorists in Somalia and Pakistan included drone attacks among other options under the US search and destroy objective against foreign terrorists.

Although the US State Department announcement on Thursday morning in Washington DC did not expressly say so, diplomats said yesterday that With the designation of the three Nigerians as terrorists, they now fall under the potential of direct attacks by the US government at anytime since they are now identified as enemies and threats to American’s national security interests.

now someone should tell me how these drone attacks can differentiate who is boko haram and who is not. Its obvious US would not use drones, I belive that is what the Nigeria embassy was hoping to accomplish when the sent out their letter telling them to spare lives of relatives of boko haram. Just read in-btw the lines of the thread.

Nairaland General › South African Innovator Takes Water Out Of Showering by drnoel(op): 7:56pm On Jun 20, 2012
Marishane, a 22-year-old student at the University of Cape Town student invented a product called DryBath, a clear gel applied to skin that does the work of water and soap.

The invention, which won Marishane the 2011 Global Student Entrepreneur of the Year Award, has wide applications in Africa and other parts of the developing world where basic hygiene is lacking and hundreds of millions of people do not have regular access to water.

The product differs from the anti-bacterial hand washes by eliminating the heavy alcohol smell. It creates an odorless, biodegradable cleansing film with moisturizers.

He came up with the idea as a teenager in his poor rural home in the winter when a friend of his said bathing was too much of a bother, made all the worse by a lack of hot water.

"He was lazy and he happened to say, 'why doesn't somebody invent something that you can just put on your skin and you don't have to bathe'," said Marishane.

It was his "eureka" moment.

He then used his web-enabled mobile phone to search through Google and Wikipedia in pursuit of a formula. Six months later, he came up with DryBath and a obtained a patent.

Science/Technology › South African Invents Drybath: Allows You To Shower Witout Water & Soap by drnoel(op): 6:41pm On Jun 20, 2012
What if something called DryBath was invented that allows you to shower without water? Lazy bathers can thank South African university student, Ludwick Marishane, for creating a gizmo that allows you to shower without soap and water.

The 22-year-old University of Cape Town student took part in a Dell Social Innovation Challenge and won the 2011 Global Student Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

His creative idea has many uses throughout Africa, where disease runs rampant because residents do not have access to soap and water, regularly, citing a Reuters report on Monday.

The DryBath invention is a gel solution that resembles anti-bacterial hand washes. However, the comparison stops there because it does not leave the lingering smell of alcohol behind. In fact, it is has moisturizers, carries no odor and is biodegradable.

Marishane said his idea was inspired by a friend, who had grown tired of taking a bath, and said it is "useless" because there is no warm water.

read that interview some days back and its clear they still have a lot of problems. My main worry though is the continous use of gas to power electricity. I think there should be a radical change in that direction. U guys should remeber that it is now estimated that the world oil would last 4 just the next 50 years and then it would run out. Guys tell me, once the oil Nigeria relies heavily on runs out, what would be the countries next source of income at the end of the petrochemical age (this is something our leaders are not thinking about). Other countries are now investing heavily on green power, even Europe and America is talking of raising solar enegry in our backyard (the sahara desert) to supply them with electricity when the petrochemical age ends. Heard their estimated budget is a very whooping sum but they seem to be committed to seeing it thru, but Nigeria is still talking of Gas turbines.

Politics › Committee Members Harassed As Security Operatives Investigate Call Logs... by drnoel(op): 4:15pm On Jun 16, 2012
SECURITY operatives are reportedly analysing the call logs of some members of the House of Representatives’ ad-hoc committee that probed the fuel subsidy scam over alleged misdemeanour.

Saturday Tribune learnt that the action was prompted by complaints by more oil companies allegedly found culpable by the committee that other committee members were compromised.

According to the source, the oil chiefs were stunned that the House resolved at its emergency session on Friday in Abuja to turn the heat on two oil marketers over alleged misdemeanour rather than going after all the committee members that were reportedly compromised.

Consequently, some oil marketers were said to be preparing to open more cans of worms on alleged high level of compromises by the committee members.

The House had, specifically resolved to reverse its recommendation on Synopsis Enterprises Limited and Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited, which it earlier deleted from a list of oil companies that obtained Foreign Exchange [FOREX], but allegedly failed to import petroleum products.

Saturday Tribune learnt that the resolution of the House on the bribery scam incensed some oil marketers, particularly because of the failure of the House to probe its members who alleged collected bribes besides Honourable Lawan Farouk, who purportedly owned up to receiving $624,000 as bribes.

There were reports that a vocal principal member of the House was equally involved in the scam having been offered a sum of $3 million as bribes purportedly contributed by oil marketers, whereas it was only the alleged deals by Lawan and Secretary of the committee that leaked.

A source to some of the marketers hinted Saturday Tribune that just like a video clip of the alleged misdemeanour by Lawan was presented to security operatives, recorded conversations between other lawmakers who reportedly received bribes during the probe of the oil subsidy proceeds would also be released at the nick of time.

It was further gathered that the conversations between the lawmakers and the marketers through telephone, most essentially, had been relayed to security operatives who were said to have commenced investigating the lawmakers so fingered to authenticate the roles played by each of them.

The oil chiefs were allegedly angered that the House, during its sitting, gave an impression that it was being witch-hunted by the executive arm which it subtly claimed was the mastermind of the ordeals currently being faced by Lawan, rather than addressing the case of corruption involving some of its members.

ruledworld: I met this girl some 5 years ago, and we have been going on smoothly without any problem. But the fact that she has NEVER asked me to do anything or give her anything or buy her any stuff, or even send her credit, even though she is not from a rich family, I started to wonder, does she really love me? undecided

To cut it short, we are still together, we are currently engaged, and planning to get married next year.

What I want to know is, is it normal if your girlfriend never asked anything from you? Though I trust her, I still have some worries that she might be getting some help from people I don't know, which can result in something I don't know again.

PS: Do not assume that I have never done anything to her before, I use to do so many stuffs to her, though not frequently, only when I can conveniently do it. But the fact that she have never asked anything from me, really baffles me.
thank your lucky stars. I know ur feeling cos I also had the same feeling while i was dating my wife. Anyway be adivced u have to make 4 for it sha after u are wedded.
