princdebola201: Blame Past And Present S/E Governors Not The Oba Of Lagos By Jessica Obioma My husband and I really relished the jokes that flooded social media as a result of Oba Akiolu’s threat to drown the Igbos living in Lagos in the lagoon if they don’t vote for his candidate – Akinwunmi Ambode. The one that takes the cake is not Basket mouth’s discounted live jackets for the Igbos. No, it’s the one that says Igbos living in Lekki had refused to come out on the Election Day to vote because they live next door to the lagoon. I thought that was hilarious. Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu Now seriously speaking. That threat by the Oba wasn’t funny at all. However, nothing about those crude, mean comments from the Oba surprised me because this particular Oba has always come across as one of the few less accommodating Yoruba men I have ever seen. Royalty is not about brute force or hooliganism. But let me move on. It’s about time my brothers and sisters from Igboland sat back and took stock of how and why things have turned out so hopelessly and helplessly for them. The civil war ended many decades ago. How did they sit back and allow a few mean greedy and little-minded kleptomaniacs from their own tribe reduce them to a charity case in other lands. Why have they allowed past and present South East Governors to rob them of not only their means of livelihood but also their right to live and work in their home land? Once the enabling environment is not there for you to thrive and blossom you are forced to seek solace elsewhere. And that’s what the systematic looting of state resources by past and present South East government have done to sons and daughters of Igboland. Why won’t the likes of Akiolu denigrate them when their own so called leaders have devalued, diminished and degraded them? Some years back, a man called Sam Mbakwe as Governor of Imo state showed selfless leadership by making the welfare of the citizens a priority. He was ready to suffer mockery in the hands of the Shagari government, and was labelled the “weeping Governor” because he was bent on making sure his people were not denied their entitlements. He spent the state resources on developing the people and their communities. Even the blind saw it and the deaf felt it. He did not need to appoint any PR consultant or Lying Press secretaries to peddle lies in the media about invisible legacy projects. Dee Sam Mbakwe, as he was fondly called by all, provided good roads, clean drinkable water everywhere and affordable quality medical care. Even though the state capital was Owerri, he constructed good roads with deep drainages in major cities like Aba and Umuahia. He set a standard which subsequent Governors refused to emulate due to sheer greed and wickedness. And he did not have the kind of billions these Governors have been swimming in. Mbakwe gave all Imo state University students bursary awards, and Jim Nwobodo did same in Anambra. Workers received their salaries promptly. Parents were able to take charge in their homes. Business boomed in Aba and Onitsha. People came from all over Nigeria to buy goods from these markets. But today Onitsha and Aba look like war zones with horrific odours everywhere. Since I999, the South East have been bedevilled by heartless, blood thirsty, and the worst breed of greedy Governors. They have been ruling with high handedness, roguery, and lies. It’s been a case of Me-my-mother-son and family plc. You dare not raise your voice or you pay with your own blood. So, our helpless and almost castrated Igbo men, who cannot challenge their Governors, go about chanting things like “OBJ hates us, even though his government paraded so many ministers from Igboland, Hausas don’t like us that’s why they killed us during the civil war, oh, Yorubas loathe us, in fact they are all tribalistic.” So what about your own blood, your kith and kin in leadership positions? One of you was Vice President Ekwueme, then came your so called President Ebele Jonathan, another is the SSG Anyim, Ngozi has been in charge of the nation’s coffers for years yet most of you have not been paid salaries in the states since December, the Aviation Minister until lately was Stella your own sister, what has come out of all these? They just served their pockets and not the interest of the Igbos. Awolowo gave his tribe free education and Fashola is doing the same in Lagos. Now Igbo young men and women have left their homes to come and work in Lagos as house helps so that they could enjoy free education. Abia state Governor sacked all the civil servants and teachers in Abia who are not Abia indigenes even though some are married to husbands who live and trade in the state. If it were a Yoruba Governor that did that Igbo hypocrites, who dare not talk in their states, would chant to high heavens about tribalism. Go to that slum called computer village in Lagos and you will see handsome but haggard-looking unkempt young Igbo boys hanging around dirty shops in the name of apprenticeship. They can hardly finish a correct sentence in English. The same Igboland that was reputed for thriving in education no longer cares about it. You now have to be a thug to a rogue politician, a Malaysian- based drug pusher, or a 419ner with a base in South Africa to make it as an Igboman. Courtesy of our Governors. God will certainly reward these thieving Governors. When you look at the map of Nigeria and see the small area called South East you can see that it would not cost much to develop it. If only these Governors could use up to 50 per cent of the allocations they collect monthly from the federal government there would not be so much poverty and deaths in Igboland. The biggest industry in Igboland now is burials. People are just dying of malaria and high blood pressure because they cannot afford medical treatment and they can’t afford even a meal a day. They all look so malnourished and traumatised even though they are not in a civil war. The South East especially Abia state have paraded the worst set of Governors in the country since 1999 because these Governors make a living out of rigging elections and subverting the will of the people. Any state INEC chief that comes is easily bought over with hundreds of millions of the people’s fund that’s how they keep perpetuating their stooges in power after they have looted the state treasury for eight years. They continue to use their anointed and rigged-in stooges to milk the state coffers. The South East have never enjoyed democracy so their people keep running and seeking a better life elsewhere in Nigeria. So, why won’t the Oba of Lagos trample upon them when their own blood are humiliating and crushing them daily without blinking an eye? Jessica Obioma, a multi media journalist, author, publisher, TV and Radio host, is President of Teenage Life Mission. The above crap is a ranting of a maggot. A silly conjecture born out of delusional mind. |

STOP TEACHING TRIBAL SUPERIORITY
For those wondering why most Igbo feel they are superior to other tribes in Nigeria and why I have been shouting myself hoax these days about the end to racial superiority, I will not stop because I will continue to provide facts to back up my claim. Any Hausa, Yoruba, Ijaw, Efik who claim tribal superiority should be roundly condemned too, all of us must identify this dangerous trend because if we don't, we shall only be postponing the evil days.
CHINUA ACHEBE did much in his work THERE WAS A COUNTRY to paint other tribes as envious of IGBO superiority and he did much to damage the psyche of most Igbo who will read his work and be inspired to believe him. This should provide explanation for the reason why some Igbo youths believe that they are the best in Nigeria, that they country the country's economy, that other tribes are dirty and that other people's lands should be categorizes as 'terra nullius' (no man's land).
Below are some of the "Igbo Supremacist" quotes from Achebe's book: 1. The Igbo “led the nation in virtually every sector – politics, education, commerce, and the arts." (Pg. 66)
Achebe suddenly forgot the facts that the Yoruba man Esan da Darocha (from Ilesha) was the first millionaire in Nigeria. The Yoruba business-woman Madam Efunroye Tinubu (1805-1887) was the first woman in Nigeria to buy a car. William Akinola Dawodu (A Yoruba) born in 1879 was the first importer (dealer) of motor car in Nigeria -he was the sole agent for firestone tyres, Dogde, Chevrolet, and Rio motors. He was also the principal promotor of numerous Ford vehicles in the country. The first Igbo man to buy a car was , Igwe Orizu I (Eze Ugbo Onya Mba) in 1912.
Kano: In 1851, this city, one of the largest in Africa, made 10 million sandal pairs and 5 million hides for export every year.
Alhassan Dantata, born in 1877, was a Northern Nigerian Kolanut trader and was described as perhaps the richest man in West Africa at the time of his death in 1955; In 1929, when the Bank of British West Africa, opened a branch in Kano, Dantata placed 20 Carmels loads of silver coins in it. That was money speaking.
But Achebe did not see all these as anything so long as the achievers are not Igbo; because only Igbo were leaders in commerce.
The Yorubas were already doctors and Lawyers almost 70 years before the Igbo, but to Achebe, the Igbo were the first in everything. Achebe forgot that Madam Efunroye was sending trading missions to several countries, including Europe before Amalgamation of Nigeria. The fact that the man who gave the Igbo their alphabet (Latinized script) was Samuel Ajayi Crowther, a Yoruba, but according the Achebe, the Igbo led the nation in politics, education, commerce etc.
The NCNC credited to be Igbo party, was co-founded by Herbert Macaulay, a Yoruba who was the first President of that Party; before NCNC, The Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP) Nigeria's first political party was formed in 1923 by Herbert Macaulay (a Yoruba) to take advantage of the new Clifford Constitution, the NNDP successfully organized various Lagos interest groups into a single group that was able to compete politically.
In fact a careful study of the list of the associations which made up the NCNC part showed that it was an amalgamation of several cultural associations, and labor movements formed in 1944; with very few Igbo associations represented but according to Achebe, it was the Igbo who led the nation in politics. See the List of the NCNC founding associations below to judge for yourself:
T.U.C. of Nigeria National Democratic Party Associated Press (Zikist) Demobilized Soldiers Union Calabar Improvement League Lagos Market Women Union Ebute Butchers Union (Lagos) Tailors Union of Nigeria Bamenda Improvement Association Nigerian Union of Students Yaba Estate Social Club Ahoada District Union Council of Ijebu National Societies Ekpoma Progress Union Ezi Wlefare League Igbotako Progressive Society Igbanke Union Ijebu Igbo Patriotic Society Ila Patriotic Union Ipetu Improvement Union Kwale Improvement Union West African Union of Seamen Nigeria Reconstruction Group Youths Literary Improvement Association of Master Tailors Commercial Biz League Farmers Committee of West Africa Akure Federal Union Council of Ijesha Societies Enugu Divisional Union Ishan Progress Union Ekpoma Progress Union Ezi Wlefare League Igbotako Progressive Society Igbanke Union Ijebu Igbo Patriotic Ila Patriotic Union Ipetu Improvement Union Kwale Improvement Union Seamen Nigeria Reconstruction Group Youths Literary Improvement Association of Master Tailors Commercial Biz League Farmers Committee of West Africa Akure Federal Union Council of Ijesha Societies Egbado Improvement Union Enugu Divisional Union Ekiti Parapo Society Mbaise Union Edo National Union
2. The Igbo were “the dominant tribe.” (pg. 233) Achebe forgot that the Yoruba had Telephone connection close to 70 years before the Igbo, and that Itu was connected before Enugu. The Hausa/Fulani built empires and cities centuries before the amalgamation of Nigeria, but to Achebe, the Igbo were the dominant tribe.
3. “This group, the Igbo, that gave the colonizing British so many headaches and then literarily drove them out of Nigeria was now an open target, scapegoats for the failings and grievances of colonial and post-independent Nigeria.” (pg. 67) According to Achebe, it is the Igbo alone who chased the British out of Nigeria. The works of Awolowo, Herbert Macaulay, Anthony Enahoro, Pa Michael Umoru, and others.
Obafemi Awolowo advocated federalism as the only basis for equitable national integration; as head of the Action Group, he (Awolowo) led demands for a federal constitution, which was introduced in the 1954 Lyttleton Constitution, following primarily the model proposed by the Western Region delegation led by him.
4. Achebe writes, has “an unquestioned advantage over his compatriots…Unlike the Hausa/Fulani he was unhindered by a wary religion, and unlike the Yoruba he was unhampered by traditional hierarchies…Although the Yoruba had a huge historical head start, the Igbo wiped out their handicap in one fantastic burst of energy in the twenty years between 1930 to1950.” (pg. 74)
Describing the religion of others as 'wary' is not palatable, and to trivialize the traditional culture of the Yoruba is an arrogant display of supremacy and tribalism.
5. “It is my impression that Chief Obafemi Awolowo was driven by an overriding ambition for power, for himself in particular and for his Yoruba people in general…However Awolowo saw the dominant Igbos at the time as the obstacle to that goal, and when the opportunity arose – the Nigeria – Biafra War – his ambition drove him into a frenzy to go to every length to achieve his dreams. In the Biafran case it meant hatching up a diabolical policy to reduce the number of his enemies significantly through starvation – eliminating over two million people, mainly members of future generation. (pg. 233)"
It is obvious from the above quote that Achebe has sown the seed of hatred against the Yoruba in the minds of the Igbo forever. Claiming Awolowo had overriding power for himself and his Yoruba people. He arrogantly claimed Awolowo saw the 'dominant' Igbo as a threat and obstacle that must be removed. This is a deliberate incitement against the Yoruba by an opinion leader and influencer like Achebe. This self-delusive claim of dominance above others is common in several narratives among both the Literates and Illiterates Igbo. This nonsense must stop, it is standing history on its head to claim the Igbo are the dominant ethnic group in Nigeria. Yet these are the people who will accuse all others of tribalism.
According to Achebe within 20 years, the Igbo became the leading tribe in Nigeria, he made this assertion without any statistics.
He made it look like other tribes stopped developing. When evidence contradicted his arrogant claim. The first TV station in Africa was created in the 1950s by Obafemi Awolowo with money from Cocoa; the first University in Nigeria (the University of Ibadan) was founded at Ibadan and not in Igbo land. Awolowo built the first stadium in Africa, the first high rise building in Nigeria, first industrial estate. I guess the Igbo within 20 years surpassed all these records and only the Igbo grew because other tribes went to sleep.
If an intellectual like Achebe could have this supremacist attitude, then one needs not be surprised when not-so educated Igbo claim that their tribe are the richest, the cleanest, the best in Nigeria. This attitude gives false sense of entitlement because people fed with these falsehood will grow up wondering why they are not the leaders in all aspects of the economy since they are the best.
We must make it a mission to correct this dangerous attitude, because it has led to several violent conflicts before not only in Nigeria but in Nazi Germany and in Rwanda. There is nothing like a superior tribe. We must also stop sweeping all dangerous comments and tribalist claims under the carpets for the sake of 'peace.' If not corrected, we are only postponing the evil days. The poster of the above crap simply dwells in hearsay and innuendos. You have done what Yoruba do best, thus, to claim everybody in Eko who had meaningful source of living as Yoruba. It has not yet down on the writer that anything claimed by Yoruba is completely tinted and instigates element of doubt since Yoruba had have the liberty to incorporate returnees into their society. No Igbo man claims anything but states factual facts which history tends to validate. I guess the poster cannot differentiate fact from fiction as in the case of alleged Dantata’s load of 20 Carmel of silver coins and Bank of British West Africa. What a ninny. |

If federal government should give Igboland Lagos or Abuja as it have given Yoruba land and Hausa land, Ndiigbo would have stayed in their Lagos or Abuja which could have hastened the disintegration of the jungle called Nigeria. I am strictly for disintegration of Nigeria so that every Joe could control his destiny. |

kemitwarrior: "Igbo's Didn't make Lagos, Lagos Made the Igbo's".~By Akin Ajayi Obe. -Most Igbos say they are the people that developed Lagos and made Lagos what it is today. They say without Igbos, Lagos is finished. And I keep wondering how have Igbos helped in shaping and developing Lagos? “Lets get the fact right, Igbos didn't develop Lagos rather, it is Lagos that shaped and made the Igbos what they are today. Without Igbos in Lagos, Lagos will remain Lagos and without Lagos, most Igbos may likely be nothing. “Reason for my assertion is that most giant and top companies that attract millions of people across the country to Lagos are not owned by the Igbos so, how have Igbos shaped and developed Lagos? “These are the achievements and economic advancement Igbos gave Lagos and Lagosians; Tokunbo and Fake Spare Parts at Ladipo Market, China Electronics and Pirated CDs at Alaba Market, Bend-Down and Select Clothes at Idumota, Yaba and Kotangowa Markets, Chinese and Tokunbo Computer/Phones and Accessories at Computer Village Ikeja are Igbos economical achievements and contributions to Lagos. In fact, most Igbos are causing nuisances in Lagos. A visit to these markets will tell you the amount of nuisances that Most Igbos have caused in Lagos. The environments these Igbo traders are mostly populated are always polluted with waste of all sorts, they are dirty, stinking, rough, erect illegal shops on the roads, on pipeline and railway lines indiscriminately in these market places that cause traffic gridlocks and other dangerous situations and when Lagos State Government dismantles these illegal shops, they get angry. If Lagos State Government closes their shops for environmental violations, they pick offence. How then have the Igbos developed Lagos?.... think on these...... “As far as I am concerned, PZ, COCA-COLA, 7UP, CADBURY, MTN, ZAIN, GLO, ETISALAT, DANGOTE, SHOP-RITE, GOLDEN PENNY, FLOUR MILL, INDOMIE, UNILEVER, P&G, CHI LIMITED, GUINNESS, NIGERIA BREWERIES, OANDO, CONOIL, TOTAL, MOBIL, CHEVRON, SHELL, KFC, AQUADANA, EKO HOTEL, INTER CONTINENTAL HOTEL, PROTEA HOTEL, JULIUS BERGER, RCC CONSTRUCTION, NESTLE, KPMG, GSK, FRIESLAND FOODS, WAMCO, BRITISH AMERICA TOBACCO, SCHLUMBEGER, AIT, SILVERBIRD TV, CHANNELS TV, LARFARGE, etc are not owned by the Igbos. These companies are what attracted millions of people to Lagos. “Igbos shouldn't lay claim that they developed a place by becoming nuisances. Most of the top Churches in Lagos are not also owned by Igbos. House on the Rock, Redeemed Christian Church of Christ, Christ Embassy, Deeper Life, Living Faith, MFM, etc are not owned by Igbos. The only Church that's reasonably big and is owned by an Igbo man is TREM, while another Igbo Church, Lord Chosen Church, encourages nuisance in Lagos and it also doubles as the dirtiest Church in Lagos. “Records show that 75% of robbery cases in Lagos are carried out by Igbos, 85% of ritual cases in Lagos are carried out by Igbos, 60% of drug cases in Lagos are carried out by Igbos, 70% of fraud cases in Lagos are carried out by Igbos, 90% of pirated CD cases in Lagos are carried out by Igbos, 60% of fake and adulterated drugs in Lagos that have killed thousands of Lagosians are carried out by Igbos, in fact, most of the crimes in Lagos are connected to the Igbos, so how have the Igbos developed Lagos when they can't get their hands off crime? “There's no Igbo man among the top three richest people in Nigeria, so how are they successful? “The truth is that Igbos should be grateful that the Yorubas accommodated them in Lagos peacefully, they shouldn't take the meekness and kindness of the Yorubas for granted. “Igbos didn't make Lagos but it is actually Lagos that made Igbos.” End of discussion! ...... Yoruba are full of it. All of sudden, Lagos has become the almighty creator that made Igbo. Please can someone tell the moronic writer of the above crap that Eko was before Lagos and all are man-made? |

raumdeuter: And the Civil war soldiers too killed the useless people in Nigeria. Benjamin Adekunle killed the foolish people who had no sense and came with a knife into a gun fight
You are free to inject the tribal plank into it I do not know about civil war soldiers who killed useless people in Nigeria. However, I knew about one idiotic and loudmouthed Benjamin Adekunle who was practically man-handled at the battle front by the Biafran soldiers that prompted his sack as GOC of 3MCDO of Nigerian army. |

omoluabi001: . well an igbo man Major general Alexandria Madibo who was Ojukwu's second in command explain How d war started in his book which he wrote after d war, he explain How d war could Have been avoided entirely when Ojukwu signed d Aburi accord deal in Ghana but for d selfish interest of Ojukwu who successfully deceive his kinsmen that they will win d war...He explain d series of meetings BTW Ojukwu and some "White men" which Ojukwu reluctantly refuses to share d details with anybody incliding hia second on command, he further explain how Ojukwu trusted in white mercenaries he hired more than his own people who feels d pain of d war....he explain how Ojukwu castigated a yoruba man (Major Ademola)who was fighting along side d Biafran soilders since d begining of d war, reason was that Ojukwu didnt like him and ordered his people to killed him by jungle justice (what a shame) a man who was disowned by his people cos he defect to biafra....Major General Madibo also gives account of how he threatened Ojukwu to surrender when he knows that d war can never be won no mater how hard they fought...he explain how ojukwu stationed a TWO army batallions in his native town Nnewi....my friend major secret were released in that book..... I know telling the truth has become a taboo among certain ethnicities in Nigeria. It is a natural fact that Ojukwu did not reneged on accord reached in Aburi, Ghana but the so-called federal government of Nigeria led by Yakubu Gowon and staunchly encouraged by Obafemi Awolowo. Please just remember you do not have monopoly on the so-called book written by Alexandria Madibo. |
