The Biafran secession of 1967 and ensuing civil war presented Israel with an acute dilemma. Israel sought to maintain correct relations with the Federal Government of Nigeria, which viewed as a hostile act any support rendered to the Biafran separatists. At the same time, the plight of the Igbos reminded many Israelis of the Holocaust. This article makes use of Israeli archival material to shed new light on how Israel shaped its policy towards the conflict. The Israeli public, press and parliament called for assistance to Biafra, evoking their country's deep moral obligation to help a people in distress. Israel aided Biafra, including, in a clandestine manner, the supply of weapons for which the secessionists pressed, in addition to humanitarian assistance. At the same time, Israel also sold arms to Nigeria, seeking to prevent a diplomatic rupture with the Lagos government that would have affected Israel's position in all of black Africa.

One of the reasons for the precipitation of January 15, 1966 coup was that Federal government of Nigeria led by Tafawa Balewa NPC had allowed northerners such Muhammed Buhari who did not possess mere secondary school certificate to become officers in Nigerian armed forces. The echo of such nepotistic endeavor reverberated during the presidential campaigns when the same Mohammed Buhari forgot where he hid his WAEC certificate.
It is rather unfortunate that most Nigerians are dwelling on the crap such as Gowon was not a participant in the July 29, 1996 coup. The nonsensical crap of non-participation of Gowon in the countercoup was initiated by Yoruba, western regional government of Nigeria and other few dingbats from southern Nigeria in order to atttact favor from their masters from northern region of Nigeria especially Gowon. |

totima: Before I get jumped on by the tribal voltrons...please hear me out.
I remembered the Wall Street Journal article (abi na Financial Times?) that referenced Tinubu's machavellian approach to cinching the presidency and this got me thinking.
Contrary to what many believe, I suspect that the incriminating video excerpt of Lagos' Oba threatening Igbos was leaked by APC handlers...not PDP.
Think about this: in Lagos, there are more Yoruba pvc holders than Igbo. Whether Igbos like it or not this is an irrefutable fact (as for the why...population dynamics + the power of the incumbency to ensure yoruba owned pvcs are released to the public compared with non-Yorubas).
This election is actually about shifting + securing the Yoruba vote...and nothing guarantees this more that inciting a little tribalism. What better way to do this than by using the Igbos as pawns in an exciting Igbo vs Yoruba battle?
They release something from a Yoruba figurehead to offend Igbo sensibilities, have them react with vitriol towards Yorubas and in turn, have Yorubas vote APC out of tribal retaliation. Tribalism is Nigeria's opium and Igbos and Yorubas sucked the drama out of this episode like a man who,,re guzzling on puzzy juice (xcuse my french).
Prior to the recent turn of events, I didn't believe that the Lagos elections would have a high turnout. Nigerians were still in the honeymoon phase of Buhari's election and weren't THAT interested. And there were legitimate concerns that PDP's Jimi Agbaje would give Ambode a run for his money among Yoruba voters.
This saga was the game changer that APC needed.
SMART MOVE.
Igbos fell for the bait and the Yoruba masses will fall in proper position, as planned.
I must admit that Yoruba leaders (emphasis on Yoruba LEADERS. The general population are a malleable lot and exhibit nigger.ism just like their equally dumb Igbo counterparts) are masters of political manipulation. Something that Igbo leaders sorely lack. Could it be the years of palace intrigues in the heyday of slave empires of oyo, ife, etc?
I don't see this among the hausa-fulani aristocracy and I guess this stems from the survival tactics employed by Yoruba courthands since Obas were more disposable than Emirs.
I will look to the results of this weekend's elections to confirm my suspicions.
I may be watching too many episodes of Revenge (love me some Emily Thorne vs Victoria Grayson mindgames ....season 4 sucks though), BUT think about this. I guess the essence of loudmouth is incredibly inherent among the Yoruba. For 16 years past, PDP which is supported by Ndiigbo has celebrated the death of four political parties from Yoruba land and there was no time the issue of shrewdness surfaced. Simply because APC, a composition of Islamic and tribal parties in Nigeria won a rigged out presidential election and silly boneheaded comment from consummate fraud called Oba of Lagos, smartness of Yoruba ethnicity shone like a lone northern star. |

akpumping7720: "Respectfully, We Igbos have always overrated our significance in Nigeria. Since the existence of this country, our stubbornness have always made us the best looser. We haven't taken a lesson from Biafra, or the fact that we largely assisted in relegating PDP to a regional party, or the fact that our "myopic thinking" (in the words of Rochas) have cost us the seats of the Senate Presidency and House of Rep Speaker. But we gladly take a worthless pride in our stupidity. NdiIgbos really need to look inwards and cast the demon misdirecting us away". I quoted d above statement from a nairalander's comment on a particular topic today. Truth be said, d above statement needs to be written on a golden slate. The igbos need to look inwards if they really want to have a say in Nigeria politics. The average igbo is Proud and always full of himself. I respect the igbos a lot because they are very INDUSTRIOUS and INTELLIGENT. They have contributed a lot to the Nigerian economy directly and indirectly. There is no sector you wouldn't find an igbo man in Nigeria. But they have little say in the Nigeria Political system. .Even almighty God himself respect HUMBLE people. Ojukwu can avoid d civil war if he hadn't prove stubborn that he can't receive order from Gowon because he is superior to him in rank, but truth be told, the Igbos need to learn the art of the game by learning how to be humble and loyal to other tribes. We have a saying in yoruba that 'if we should postrate for a dwarf, it doesn't mean that we will grow shorter when we get up'. Being loyal doesn't make you a 'butt licker'. Large deposit of oil is in the Niger Delta and not in the core east, that was why the presidency was zoned to them. It is true that Nigeria belongs to us all but there are some set of cabals that only revolution can cast them away, they determine who will be there and who is to come. The Ndigbos need to go back and learn how to play the card well. Buhari wouldn't have won if he didn't align with the Southwest to win the Presidency. If a yoruba man wants to get something that will be difficult for him to get, he doesn't mind calling d person daddy even if he is old enough to give birth to that person, he can even go as far as postrating just to get it. Let the igbos come together in one voice and support one of their own and do away with 'Pride', I believe if they can do this, they will one day Rule this nation and have a prolong say in the Nigeria Political System. The above crap is a classical display of idiocy. I guess Ndiigbo were not involved in relegating PDP to any level of national political prominence for 16 years it ruled Nigeria. Simply because the PDP has just lost presidential election, Ndiigbo equally lost the humble aspect of their being. Most Nigerian are completely short ranged on the intellect. |

ujoatu: GOVERNMENT OF IMO STATE PRESS RELEASE SUBJECT: HIS EXCELLENCY SETS UP HRM EZE OHIRI-LED COMMITTEE TO MEET WITH OBA OF LAGOS His Excellency, Governor Rochas Okorocha has announced the setting up of a committee made up of notable traditional rulers in the State to be led by the chairman of the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM, Eze Samuel Agunwa Ohiri who would travel to Lagos to meet with the Oba of Lagos, HRM Rilwan Akiolu over the death threat he was said to have issued to the Igbos in Lagos if they fail to vote for APC in the governorship election that comes up on Saturday. The governor directed that the Eze Ohiri Committee should leave for Lagos immediately to meet with the Oba to enable them have one-on-one discussion over the said threat by the traditional ruler, and extract some commitments from him. The chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum said although the traditional ruler was reported to have denied the report, it should not be enough to accept that refutal without traditional rulers from the South-East meeting with him to discuss the controversy and the way forward, to ensure that the long existing cordial relationship between the Igbos in Lagos and their host community should remain commendable and enviable. The governor remarked that it was not enough to take up the matter on the pages of newspapers, with some of the commentators only keen in the issue to cause more serious problem between the Igbos in Lagos and the Oba of Lagos, but a new approach that would be more result-oriented should be employed, which includes the traditional rulers from the State to be led by Eze Ohiri going to Lagos and meeting with the Oba to talk about the matter. No serious Igbo man or Yoruba man would like trouble to exist between the Igbos and the Oba of their host community, and that limiting the attendant actions to comments on the pages of newspaper won’t solve the ripple. The traditional rulers when they get to Lagos and indeed to the Oba, would try to hear from the Oba directly, look at the entire issue and know what to tell the Oba or what to demand from him before travelling back to Owerri. The Governor urged the Igbos in Lagos to remain calm and also remain the good ambassadors of the Igbo nation like they have always been and that the current misunderstanding should not be allowed to cause unnecessary rift between them and the Yorubas in Lagos. Sam Onwuemeodo Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media The above alleged proposition from Mallam Rochas Okorocha can be best described as a boneheaded postulation from a culturally anemic governor of Imo State. So-called Oba of Lagos is seemly a wish fellow and should be held responsible for his acts. If there should be chaos and destruction of lives and properties in Lagos State during or after the gubernatorial contest, the loudmouthed joker should be a target. |
