Gov Shettima bans motorcycles in Maiduguri
Borno now worse than war zone – Monguno
By Mohammed Isa, Abuja & Mustapha Isa Kwaru, Maiduguri

Members of Jama’atu Ahlis-Sunnah Liddaa’awati Wal Jihad, popularly known as Boko Haram yesterday rejected the apologies tendered to them by the Governor of Bauchi state, Mallam Isa Yuguda, and former governors of Borno and Gombe states, Ali Modu Sheriff and Muhammad Danjuma Goje respectively, as earlier demanded by the sect.
In a statement made available to the Hausa service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the Islamic sect said it would only accept the apologies by the trio, if they fulfilled the other two conditions it gave them.
The yet to be met conditions, according to the BBC report monitored yesterday in Abuja, are that the governors should renounce the democracy being practiced in the country, and in its place conscientiously work to promote Islam.
The group however appealed to residents of Maiduguri, the Borno state capital to exercise patience and bear with the prevailing situation in the city.
Also in the statement, Boko Haram claimed responsibility for Tuesday night’s attack in Bauchi state, where a police station in Toro local government area of the state was ransacked by gunmen, who carted away arms and ammunitions, as well as the bombing on Wednesday of a patrol team of the Joint Task Force (JTF) deployed to foster peace and order in Maiduguri, where three soldiers were reported to have been killed.
In the meantime, as part of measures to stem the tide of the incessant killings by suspected members of the Boko Haram, Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno state yesterday placed a total ban on the use of motorcycles, both for commercial and private use, in Maiduguri, the state capital and Jere local government area.
Prior to the latest measure, the use of motorcycles were restricted between 6.00am to 6.00pm. The policy was apparently introduced because most operations of the gunmen were carried out using bikes, which makes it easier for them to flee.
Briefing newsmen at the Government House in Maiduguri, Governor Shettima said the measure was imperative as part of security strategies to find lasting solution to the persistent violence in the town.
The governor also explained that the ban, which took effect from 2.00pm of yesterday, followed recommendations of the state Security Council, which were made in its report, recently submitted to him.
According to him, though government was not unmindful of the anticipated hardships that may befall the public following the ban, he urged them to exercise patience, as sometimes people have to encounter some temporary predicaments in order to enjoy sustainable peace.
He further stated that in a bid to cushion the negative effects of the new policy, government would procure 5000 commercial tri-cycles and 100 buses to be used for intra-city movements.
He said the tri-cycles would be used in the two local government areas, while the buses are to ply the major streets of the capital city to ease the foreseen transportation problems.
Shettima assured the people of the state that government was on top of the situation, and with God’s guidance, very soon the security challenges would come to an end, adding “that the journey to attaining peace is protracted and it takes time to achieve so.”
The Borno chief executive also declared that if the Boko Haram gunmen shift their attacks to the remaining 25 local government areas of the state, government would be compelled to extend the bike ban to the entire state.
He said Nigeria is multi-ethnic and religious nation that should learn to tolerate one another for peace to reign, stressing that no religion preaches violence as an instrument of resolving grievances, even as he said “we still reiterate our readiness to dialogue with the sect’s members”.
Our correspondent reported that tension was high in the state capital as streets and major roads were deserted at about 12.00pm, with low vehicular movements, due to the presence of heavy security personnel patrolling the town.
Similarly, schools, banks, markets and other commercial centres were shut down as early as 1.00pm.
Some of residents, who spoke on the ban, described it as “ill-timed” and capable of causing yet another suffering for the masses, stressing that it would not in any way curb the serial killings.
“This is injustice. How can a government which was saddled with the mandate of eradicating the plight of its people now introduce this wrong idea, knowing that majority of residents have solely relied on commercial bike operators for their transportation,” Malam Goni Mohammed, a trader decried.
Another resident, who simply identified himself as Musa Hassan, an okada rider, condemned the ban, saying that, it was capable of causing poverty and unemployment among the teeming youths, who embraced okada operation as a means of livelihood.
“For God’s sake what can we do and where can we go to earn a living as our only source of livelihood was blocked”, he further lamented, adding that, “I can assure you that the ban would not solve the violence as the Boko Haram gunmen would devise another tactic of operations”.
However, the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi, has called on the government to convert the commercial vehicles of the state-owned transport company, Borno Express, to township operations to ease the imminent transportation problems due to the new policy.
Speaking to newsmen at his palace yesterday, El-Kanemi observed that the vehicles should be directed to commence intra-city services, prior to the procurement of the 5000 tri-cycles and 100 buses.
In a related development, the JTF has said it observed with dismay the unacceptable behaviour of some residents in Maiduguri who allegedly allowed the surroundings or frontages of their houses to be used for nefarious activities.
Spokesman of the JTF, Col. Victor Ebhaleme, in a statement yesterday, strongly warned that henceforth appropriate action would taken against those found harbouring criminals, adding that owners of makeshift kiosks who allow for their use by suspected criminals would be dealt with.
Meanwhile, an elder statesman, Dr. Shettima Ali Monguno, has advised the Federal Government to urgently adopt appropriate measures to address the persistent insecurity bedeviling Borno state, saying the prevailing intense situation was more horrible than what Nigerians had experienced during the civil war.
Dr. Monguno, who was Nigeria’s first indigenous minister of petroleum resources, gave the advice yesterday, while chatting with newsmen in his residence in Maiduguri.
He urged the government should do all it takes to restore peace so that residents could sleep with their two eyes closed.
According to the elder statesman, the violent campaigns ravaging the state were getting out of control, saying all authorities concerned should engage the aggrieved group in a dialogue, “no matter what it takes”.
“I served at the UN under various representations and that whenever there was a feud between two parties, we always proffer solutions through reconciliation”, he said, adding that, “for this I am making a humble appeal on the authorities to adopt same strategy and end the bloodsheds sooner.”
The one time petroleum minister admonished those perpetrating the violence to embrace peace and dialogue as means of pursuing their grievances, as Islam does not in any way condone violence in achieving an objective.
“Islamic principles provide that two parties who are engaged in a feud must resolve their differences within three days, otherwise, the wrath of Almighty God will befall them,” he further added.
Dr. Monguno equally admonished people of Borno state to return to God, repent and pray to seek divine intervention over the loss of lives rocking the state, adding that, “everyone is pushed to the wall, and if we seek God’s guidance and blessing this mayhem will be over”.

Tears as bodies of slain corps members return home

By Augustine Tsenzenghul

They came alive to Bauchi State to serve the nation, but yesterday when it was time to leave, they left as dead heroes.

The remains of the nine National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members killed in the state in the aftermath of the April 16 election violence were yesterday moved from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) mortuary to their various places of birth for onward commitment to mother earth.

It was not a beautiful sight to behold as sympathizers, friends, compatriots and relatives who were at the morgue to bid them goodbye could not control their emotions as the reality of the tragedy dawned on them.

The murdered corps members were evacuated by officials of the National Directorate Headquarters of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), Abuja led by Mr Yakubu Jok, a Deputy Director of NYSC. The officials got to the mortuary as early as 6 am and waited for the corpses of the fallen youthful and energetic heroes to be dressed in their full NYSC attires before they were loaded into the nine ambulances line up for their transportation amidst wailing and prayers.

The nine corps members, among whom seven were murdered at Giade Police Station had a female corps member who was pregnant, but was violated by her killers. The murderd corps members were Adewumi Seun (Ekit Statei), Teidi Olawale Tosin (Kogi), Adowei Elliot (Bayelsa), Okpokiri Obinna (Abia), Gbenjo Ebenezer Ayotunde (Osun), Ukeoma Ikechuwku Chibuzor (Imo), Nwazema Anslem Chukwuonyerem (Imo), Adeniji Kehinde Jehleel (Osun) and Akonyi Ibrahim Sule( Kogi).

The seven killed in Giade Police Station had run there for safety but the killers overpowered the policemen on duty, also beheaded a woman police corporal  and the corps members with machetes and sticks before setting the police  station on fire.

Adowei Elliot, Ukeoma Ukewchuwu Chibuzor and Aknoyi Ibrahim Sule were of Batch A who were supposed to leave the Wailo NYSC Orientation Camp at the end of March 2011 but were not allowed to go home to proudly show off their NYSC colours to their parents and siblings because they were engaged as INEC ad hoc staff for the general elections.

Barely few hours after NYSC officials ferried the nine corpses away enroute their states of origin, another female corps member who also sustained serious injury during the same post-election violence at Dambam Local Government Area and was hospitalsed, gave up the ghost, thus bringing the death toll to 10.

Last week, Bauchi State Governor, Isa Yuguda had said the corps members were destined to experience what they got.”  Yuguda who spoke to reporters at Government VIP Lodge shortly after casting his vote, recalled that he had a similar experience in Ibadan, Oyo State in 1979 when President Shehu Aliyu Shagari was declared winner of the election then.

Yuguda who condoled with parents and relatives of the deceased, however, absolved himself of any blame over the death of the corps members. .He blamed the NYSC authority for exposing the corps members to danger. He, however, did not say what his government will do for the families of the slain corps members and those who sustained injuries and lost their personal effects.

The last appeared not to have been heard of explosions in Maiduguri ,the Borno state capital as residents of the city Tuesday experienced three more bomb blasts

The blasts are coming barely 24 hours when three similar explosions rocked the state capital claiming three lives and injuring 14 others

Although the casualty figure of Tuesday's incidents that happened in different parts of the state capital appears hazy for now , one of the blasts was however said to have been aimed at a police convoy going round Maiduguri metropolis to monitor both the gubernatorial and House of Assembly polls

Also on Tuesday, an attempt by a member of the Boko Haram sect to smuggle suspected explosives into the University of Maiduguri was thwarted by security operatives and the suspect promptly arrested by the police

Very Soon, sooner than you or I can ever imagine, those responsible for all these dastardly acts will have every cause to regret their actions. I have a strong feeling that the “Hausas and the Fulanis” will never rule Nigeria again. Mark my Words. All we need to do in the future is vote for anyone from those regions where GEJ won, middle belt down to the Atlantic, that all, nothing for the far North, they will forever regret their foolish actions.

Absolutely. I can't agree less with u . In fact the unfolding scenario reveals that the Hausa-Fulani have become minority in Nigeria's political equation and the current senseless violence and killings is worsening this confirmed and uneviable status they have to contend with.

Seriously i doubt the credibilty of election under this poorly organised and coordinated INEC.

JIGAWA State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido spat fire on Northerners who are opposed to the continuation of President Goodluck Jonathan in office on May 29, this year.

If Northern opposition to the President continues, the country should simply be broken up, he declared, pulling no punches at key members of the North who have continued to raise anti-Jonathan sentiments.

Lamido noted that opposition to Jonathan is subsisting although the President has secured the nod of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to fly its banner in the election.

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) last week declared the North’s opposition to Jonthan despite winning the PDP ticket at the party’s last national convetion in Abuja.

Lamido, who spoke on the Hausa service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) monitored in Kaduna said that no governor in the North was coerced to vote for the president at the last special convention of the party where he emerged as the party standard bearer for the election, contrary to speculations.

Lamido also argued that the issue of zoning was laid to rest by the party during the special convention of the party on January 13. He added that the overwhelming votes cast for the president at that convention superseded even the constitution of the party.

The Governor said that if Northern Muslims could insist that President Jonathan, a Southern Christian, should not be President, then, there is a need to divide Nigeria and let each zone determine its direction.

He argued further that those championing a Northern presidency are uncivilised, adding that such sentiment would only lead to the destruction of the north itself.
His words: “The point is they are using such sentiments to destroy the North. What is politics all about? Following your opinion. But for someone to say one must abide by his opinion no matter how, is wrong. People should be allowed to do what they want. If that is the case, we should divide the country so that we could have the section for Christians and that of the Muslims,” he said.

Lamido continued: “We should know that this issue of zoning, out of about 60 political parties, this zoning issue is for the PDP alone. It does not bother those in the ANPP, CPC or ANC. But because of the circumstance we found ourselves, it has become a general issue. Now they are denouncing the PDP but the fact is that they cannot change anything.

“ Look at what happened in Kano during the ANPP, there was this boy called Ibrahim Little. For many years he was the only major figure in the ANPP but in the end they forcefully rejected him. Look at how Abacha’s son joined a party within two months and seized everything. So those people, what they are doing, they feel is what everybody is doing.

“Jonathan is not the governor of Abia, he is not the governor of Borno or Kastina. Therefore such noise….It is wrong for someone to be listening to the sermons of a gossiper…for someone from another party to come and be saying all sorts of things against the PDP, like the party is against Islam, Sule does not like Muslims, he has gone astray by following non believers, okay let’s see.”

Explaining why some states did not wholly vote for Jonathan, Lamido said: “Whoever did what he did, did that based on his opinion and wishes. Some are afraid, others are frightened. But for us, we have been in it for over 30 years. We were frightened, we were made to be afraid, they said we don’t like Islam, that we are anti-North…but those who judge somebody’s faith, look at them.

“ Any person who says his fellow man does not like Islam, look at him and watch his relationship with others. They are ignorant by saying someone has deviated from his true religion. We are still in the North and we are seeing them, what is it that they have not said? Forget about such people. The electorate should go and vote for its choice, it’s an election and people know the right. They have seen those who ruled before, how was it, what level are the states in now? What becomes of the North and how strong is the Northerners’ strength?

On demonstrations in some states against the PDP like in Kaduna where the PDP flag was burnt, he said: “Any member of the PDP, wherever he might be, is known. The party has followers everywhere, in the local governments and everywhere. Those perpetuating such crisis, not all are in PDP. But the point is that there are some lazy politicians who feel they have lost. We know their antecedents, they cannot be trusted. They are Muslims but they don’t know what the religion demands.

“ All these allegations that the North has been marginalized, they don’t know about it. They are the ones causing such problem and we have small children that are unemployed. Poverty is unlimited here. These burnings, humiliations, and abuses, would that wipe out the poverty in the North? They should choose to live in peace so that we work for their development.

“All the people talking are those in CPC and ANPP, and they were never in PDP before. There was ANPP administration in Jigawa, all those in CPC or ANPP in the state, even before he was in ANPP and not in PDP.”

Lamido also said those who might defect from the party were not true members of the PDP. “I heard what Ribadu, Buhari and Shekarau were saying, that they would provide good leadership devoid of ethnic or religious sentiment…Those who failed election in the PDP and are now alleging foul play, perhaps the other time they won nobody heard them say anything. To them, PDP was the best at that time.

“It is wrong to politicize religion because of Jonathan…a Muslim does not lie, he does not gossip or mislead, or blackmail people.”

Deeper Life pastor, 3 others killed in Maiduguri by suspected fundamentalists
News Jan 20, 2011

As CAN, Uma Ukpai urge Christians to defend themselves

By Sam Eyoboka
LAGOS — Renewed sectarian killing resurfaced in Maiduguri, Borno State capital on Tuesday as a Deeper Life Christian Church pastor and three of his neighbours were killed by fundamentalists.

It was gathered that Michael Medugu, a district pastor in charge of Hausa church, was killed by a gang of four fundamentalists in his pharmaceutical shop while dispensing drugs to customers at about 7.05 p.m., leaving his wife and seven children to mourn him.

According to the reports, Megudu had just returned to his shop after the day’s Leadership meeting in his church, where his pastor, Ama Awokoya, incidentally called on Christians to increase their prayers for peace in the region, saying: “Must they bring dead bodies to the church before we intensify prayers?”

How prophetic that turned out to be, as few minutes later the pastor was confronted with the news of the death of the pastor in charge of the Hausa church and three of his neighbours including Obina, Mr. James and one Baba Joy at dusk same day by a gang of four who came in on foot and later escaped.

Attackers, enemies of President Jonathan—CAN
Responding to the latest brutal killing yesterday, the National President of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor and the president of Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Organisation, Rev. Uma Ukpai argued that the incessant mindless killings might have been sponsored by enemies of the Goodluck Jonathan administration who are determined to make him look unpopular.

Oritsejafor, in a telephone interview, from Rome said the attacks “without any doubt are part of the grand design by enemies of the president who want to give the impression that the man is ineffective.”

He, therefore, called on Christians in that part of the country to rise up to defend themselves whenever they come under attack by these mindless fundamentalists, stressing: “It really does not make any sense for a peace-loving Christian to watch his family members being slaughtered without doing anything to defend them.

“People are calling me from that part of the country, daily by people who are disenchanted by the daily killings which had instilled fear in the minds of Christians in that region to the extent that some are now migrating from the region, because they believe that the government has not demonstrated enough commitment to defend the citizens,” Oritsejafor maintained.
Uma Ukpai urges Christians to defend themselves
Also speaking, Evangelist Uma Ukpai, who is also in Rome for this year’s Christian pilgrimage, said “there will be no end to the religious crisis in the North unless the Christians in the area take it upon themselves to defend their lives and property.

“Do you know that whenever the perpetrators of the crisis are arrested, they are released without any form of trial,” he said, adding: “This has continued over the years and not one person has been prosecuted successfully. I know that there is no one person in any jail in any part of Nigeria, who is serving any term for the part he/she played in any religious crisis.”

it is really amazing how people criticize and even politicise the statement of Mr president on the bombing. For goodness sake, he is d chief security officer of the country n as such has access 2some privileged security info which none of us has. The intelligent thing 2do in the circumstance is 4us 2give him the benefit of doubt that he meant what he sed given his privileged position and wait 4any compelling reason 2doubt same. What okah sed is 2me not compelling yet;he shul provide authentic transcript of d conversation wit GEJ if he wants 2b taken serious. In fact it is high time d Fed Govt took a strong stand on  d South African govt n Aljazeera coz they are gradually constituting a serious threat 2our national interest.

This is senseless angry angry angry. But I blame d lax security 4dis madness. i was appalled 2watch on tv; people hanging on trees and moving freely on d roof of the stands at eagle square 2 watch d independence celebration event. now, if such monumental security breach cul b allowed within d venue one then wonder what level of security existed outside. the govt has failed woefully in its responsibilities n we are consequently existing in Hobbsian state of nature, where life is nasty, solitary, brutish, poor and short . May God save us!!!

they really need 2b more clinical upfront coz against a good side they will rue these wasted chances. Anyway, on d whole good performance,it's not easy 2beat d host in a tournament.

Nairaland / General / Sani Kaita Has Admitted Receiving Death Threat by ebor(m): 12:56am On Jun 20, 2010
Kaita receives death threats

Midfielder Sani Kaita has confirmed that he received death threats following Nigeria's 2-1 defeat by Greece in a World Cup Group B game last Thursday.

The Super Eagles were leading 1-0 when Kaita petulantly kicked out at Greek defender Vasileios Torosidis on the touchline, earning himself a straight red.

Nigeria cracked after that, giving up their lead and then conceding a second goal to lose the game, and leave their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.

Kaita's Facebook fan page was immediately inundated with tens of hate messages, including some that called for him to be killed, or to commit suicide.

Kaita admitted that he had also received some messages via email.

''Yes, I have received some threats to my life,'' he told the German media.

''They were sent to my email but I'm not disturbed about that because as a Muslim, only God decides who lives and who dies.

''Everything on this earth is in God's hands, whether it is your life or whatever and unless God allows it, no one has the power to kill me.

''Only God knows what will happen tomorrow. He holds our destiny. That is what my religion teaches me.''

Kaita admitted to having sleepless nights after his dismissal against Greece.

''I cannot stop apologising to all Nigerians for making this costly mistake,'' said the 24-year-old.

''I couldn't sleep thinking about what my action has cost my country, but I hope we will win our next game (against South Korea) and qualify for the next round, where I hope to redeem my image with a good performance.

''I promise to put my life down on the pitch to ensure we go very far in this competition.

''And I promise that what happened will never happen again.''

whatever anybody says, Dora has honourably written her name in our golden sand of history by taking the historic move 2challenge the vampires/cabals tormenting us, headlong ,even at the risk of her live. what she needs is commendation coz her bold move was the turning point in the ya'adua illness saga. and Kanti Bello's questions 2 say the least were puerile and his action amounted to trivialising such important national assignment of screening ministerial nominees. our senators shul learn to address issues of dev instead of dissipating their energy on trying to achieve personal vendetta.

Meldrick:

What do we mean by fairness or not been fair. Is it a Northerner that will cry for the people of Anambra. They have not complained meaning they are okay with it. We shouldn't be talking about zoning but credible leaders.

Meldrick u're absolutely correct. This zoning and federal character nonsense have accounted for our underdevelopment coz we often end up wit round pegs in squared holes. even if they are all frm one area in Anambra state, are the people of Anambra complaining? it's high time we stoped this sacrifice of merit and performance on the alter  of fair representation.America is where they are 2day coz leaders emerge on the strength of what they can offer rather than on where they come from or what faith or religion they belong to; Obama is a classical example. And why are people saying Dora will still appear 2mrw, it's like i heared the senate president told her 2take her bow and leave. I am proud of her- she was composed, cool, calm and collected even in the face of unecessary antagonism of Kanti Bello against her.The cabals, which Sen Kanti is obviously a member, will not succeed in stoping her re-appointment.They should go and hide their heads in shame for underestimating the collective will and intelligence of naija. naija is not katsina, where they had their way for 8 years.
