Hydroelectric power furnished about 14 percent of the energy consumed by Nigerians in the 1980s. Total energy used in the form of electricity was considerably larger, however, because much of the energy provided by petroleum products and gas was converted into electricity. In 1990 most electricity was supplied by NEPA. This agency had been established in 1972 as a semiautonomous government activity through the merger of the Electric Corporation of Nigeria (ECN--created by the government in 1950 to generate and transmit power nationally) and the Niger Dam Authority (NDA--set up in 1962 to develop the economic potential of the Niger River). As part of its mandate, the NDA had constructed the Kainji Dam and an associated hydroelectric plant, which began operations in 1968. Until the late 1970s, the plant was the principal source of Nigeria's electrical power.

The demand for power grew at an average annual rate estimated at 15 to 20 percent after the start of the 1973-74 oil boom. NEPA's total generating plant, having an installed capacity of 881 megawatts in FY 1976--almost half of which was located at the Kainji hydroelectric plant--was unable to meet the rapidly growing requirement. By FY 1978 an additional 250 megawatts had been installed, of which 200 megawatts were at Kainji, but a drought in 1977 and 1978 significantly lowered the level of Kainji Reservoir and thus reduced the plant's output. [size=14pt]During the drought, blackouts were frequent, verging on the catastrophic for major industrial establishments. Goods in the process of assembly had to be destroyed, and interruptions in machine operations substantially reduced productivity[/size]. The situation improved in the 1980s, with two 120-megawatt units added to the Kainji hydroelectric station, ten units of 120 megawatts each installed in Sapele, new hydroelectric stations built at Shiroro on the Kaduna River and Jebba downstream from Kainji Reservoir, and another 200 megawatts added at various smaller plants. Power was distributed through a national grid that linked many of the large towns, some of which had been previously served by local diesel power stations. Yet the power sector, lacking spare parts, had neglected maintenance to the point that generating capacity was rapidly declining.

All of them are expired. The sensible ones have also left the frontline of politics for the younger ones, while the greedy ones still want to continue till they quench.

Even Bakare agreed with this when he was still neutral and had no selfish interests.

Let me show you what backward thinking is:

Chronologically, that seems to me like backward thinking and the starting point is BUHARI! The best way to reverse all the progress made so far.
We should not try to recycle something out of nothing simply because we are tired of the little things we have achived. We need to move forward not backwards.

That is a good dream. If you had said BB it would have been a nightmare. GEJ and Ribadu are the only forward thinking candidates in the top four.

The press was encouraged to report on all sides of these issues and to print public responses and opinions.

The current government is making new policies that will affect their diesel and generator businesses and they are fighting to stop GEJ. They will fail woefully and Nigeria will succeed.

ACN will give CPC a run for their votes. ACN has a better spread than CPC. ACN has better structures and has been on ground for a longer time. Them never know how far yet. When the results are out, I would like to see how the faces of BB will look.

For me i believe in the pedigree of Buhari as a military head of state especially WAI so why not him?

WAI was not only a war against indiscipline, but a war against [b]I[/b]nformation. It was also an avenue for him to [b]I[/b]nfringe on the basic human rights of Nigerians. Nigerians were [b]I[/b]ntimidated and treated as dogs during his regime. He fiercely persecuted the press and made life miserable for them.

He was able to achieve all he achieved by the koboko. That strategy cannot work for him in a democratic setting! If his major tool of governance cannot function in today's Nigeria what else does he have to offer?

I respect Buhari as one of our those who has contributed to the building of our nation one way or the other. But that is as far as it goes. He should remain in the background and not at the fore front. We need a president who has the strength and skills necessary to pilot the affairs of the nation as it is today. Nigeria is about to enter into an era of economic and technological explosion, enough to set us amongst the world's leading economies. The world is waiting for Nigeria to break into the limelight and we need a president that can safely spearhead that effort. A look at the other aspirants will reveal that they have more to offer Nigeria as far as the key issues are concerned.

If we really need change, we should go for outright change and not try to recycle Something out of Nothing.

I think the election process itself will create some problems. Let me explain,

The procedure is to accredit voters from 8.am. to noon after which no other voter will be accredited. If this is the case, we will inevitably record very low turn out in centres where the officials are less efficient. The situation will be such that centres with lots of voters will have risk of people getting automatically disenfranchised. The registration process took several weeks to conduct. Now, we have just a few hours. In addition, logistics problems and several other things may eat into the accreditation time. In effect, we may have several states recording about 50% turnout

This will have a huge effect on the election results if not properly controlled.

In light of current events, should we begin to expect lower turnout than initially postulated?

This reply is specifically to the people that wont vote for GEJ because he is on the PDP platform.

For now only PDP can deliver a true national leader. maybe in a few years other parties can.

this is why.

PDP is the only National party in Nigeria. all other parties are sleeping. they are based on tribe, religion or location.

PDP has a strong presence in the North, middle belt, south west, south east, and south south.
ACN is mainly in the south west.
Anpp is in a small part of the North.
Apga is in a small part of the south east
CPC(Buhari's personal property) is nothing in buhari's state but has a few almajiris in other states.

the rest do not exist.

These parties shoult mobilise on a national scale if they want to control this country.

If you want gold, you have to dig in the dirt
if you want diamond, you will most likely enter a dirty river.

GEJ is in the right place. he would have had no chance if he was an ACN candidate.

Please Forget the parrty and vote the man.
you can vote any other person for any other position, but its in our best interest that GEJ wins.

I want to comment on the issue of  black out in Nigeria. I can say that since I was a child, the issue of blackout has always been there in Nigeria. In a few years, I would be celebrating my 40th xmas.

Thank you my brother. Some of these kids just play around with their computers and post nonsense in a forum where matured minds are discussing serious issues.

He may not have put it perfectly but before you crucify the man, think of it this way: If all the elections were to be held today, it would have been a different story. He may have been trying to tell us to look at the brighter side.

The Action Congress of Nigeria has rejected the postponement of the National Assembly election to Monday.


In a statement issued in Ilorin on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party also described the ‘bungling’ of the National Assembly poll as “a national calamity and an avoidable embarrassment, which will further expose Nigeria to ridicule in the comity of nations.”


It stated that the National Assembly election should be held on April 9 while the presidential poll be postponed to the middle of the upper week, and the governorship/state house of assembly election can still be held on April 16.


Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party’s Presidential Campaign Council has expressed ‘shock and consternation’ at the circumstances that led to the postponement of the election.


“Given the enormous resources and logistic preparations that INEC claimed to have put in place, we are at a loss as to why there were this kind of avoidable lapses at the last minute.“This act of negligence is capable of portraying INEC in bad light and many are likely to question its ability to conduct credible elections.”
