InvestmentRe: Stocks That Can Make You Rich In 2007 by Egavlas(m): 7:04pm On May 23, 2007
I dont know if its been mentioned here but I think Skyebank and Ecobank shares are good stocks. I really think that Skyebank for instance, is underrated because they dont publicise their achievements a lot. These two stocks(in my own opinion), are going to be in high demand soon. And they will definitely go highr. They are already appreciating by the day.

I am not a stock guru or expert. I am just speaking from what I have seen of these two stocks

my2cents:
CNN isn't CMS' and it is rolling on fine. I bet it gets millions of hits per day.

This is where what I said above comes into play - you need a sound architecture. Again, looking at CNN, you will notice that their articles are named by date and title (cnn.com/month/date/nairaland.rules.html, for instance). I hv "tempted" them by referencing a link I saved a year ago and the article still exists. If you don't determine how you will link to articles/archive them, trust me, you will get big time headache as the site gets larger.
To assume that Cnn website is based on a static site framework is simply unthinkable. There are multi categories, multi-sections, multi-regions(africa, world , etc.) There is no way that CNN website would be based on a static pages arrangement.
There are CMS's (Content management Systems) that can be used out of the box, ie the way it is. On the other hand there are softwares that are written as a Framework(Content Management Framework). This enables webmasters, programmers to use the software as a frame work to build any Content Management application, be it news publisher, ticketing systems or portals. An organisation like CNN or BBC(I know of a certainty that BBC is based on a custom made Content managemt Framework), would know what it means to run such big sites on static pages. The mere thought of it would give any webmaster the shivers. CNN and by extension any of the newspapers sites that I know of, dont even use only one webmaster for the maintenance of the sites. Newspapers sites are built in such a way that different levels of authentication/access can be given to webmasters, editors, contributors and publishers to be able to log into the back-end and edit or post news items.
This cannot be achieved with static page based websites. So please dont even imagine that CNN is run of a static pages arrangement. It cant be even remotely workable giving the size of the sites.
The only thing going for non-databased newspaper sites are that they will use less processes on the server and the bandwidth usage will be lower thereby bringing the overhead of hosting fees lower. Also unlike CMS based sites, the site may load faster since there ar no calls made to database.
If the sunnews papers is based off a static pages arrangement, then the webmasters maybe going through a hectic time maintaining that site.

@ timmy

my standard charge for a website is 120k.but i recently started a promo where i charge 20k for a site. i think its all about marketing strategy. you can have one 50k job every 2 months while i have three 20k jobs every month. who win?

i lke the idea of low prices. web deisgn is not rocket science. its quite simple. people should be encouraged to have websites so the niaja internet presence can develope.

in my view. if you see a client that can pay 200k. bill him. if you see a client that can pay 15k and you are free at the moment. d the job. if its not a really a complex web application, one should be easy on the price.
This is true ! Very True. Good post @dasa

That they can make so much as to buy such a house is news worthy.

I think the Driving/Talking car advert campaign is a lot better than this one. Even the man drinking water from a gas station pump is better. I think the guy that started this thread probably has something to do with advertising or seriously follows advertising and thats why he could be very bothered about those things he pointed out. As someone who is just enjoying the adverts on tv, you may not fully appreciate where the guy that started this post is coming from. I have a friend who is working with an Agency that is equally big and he pointed out a couple of things including the issues pointed out here. I mean, why would the basket baller wear another product brand? Is it a double product advert or what? Such things cause serious damages abroad where attention is paid to details. Why villify the guy that posted this because he saw somethings done wrongly(igbolandia take note). We are hear to discuss and learn from one another and I think his posting is well on track.

BusinessRe: Zenith Bank Websurfer Mastercard: How Reliable? by Egavlas(m): 2:11pm On May 14, 2007
I think he meant IP and not ISP . If you are shopping online and you enter your credit card details, the system checks the address of the card owner and compares it with the IP address of the network you are browsing from. This is called the AVS system. Address Verification system. So if you are shopping from nigeria, and the address on the card says UK or Us, they will flag the process and hold the transaction because the IP address of your computer, indicates Nigeria. If you were from other "trusted" countries , they may give you a benefit of the doubt that you are on a travel/vacation and ask you to send proof of card ownership but if you are Nigerian and in nigeria and you contact them, sorry no show. Unless the AVS system checks out.

I have not had problems using my credit card except on two isolated cases.
BusinessRe: Zenith Bank Websurfer Mastercard: How Reliable? by Egavlas(m): 10:57am On May 14, 2007
If you say that it doesnt have your name on it, then thats going to be a problem. Using my credit card to pay online, I run into sites that will just flag the transaction with a fraud alert once they see your location through the AVS system. If I still have problems once in a while when using my credit card with my name, address and everything on it, what do you expect of the *websurfer*? I suggest you get a Dom account with any of the banks that issue mastercard and get a card.

This is one of the reasons why I detest the Yahoo Yahoo boys and all that rubbish. Majority of Nigerians, who are into legit business, are being hard done by the activities of this misguided and unrepentant few

I don't know what to say to the  guy that started this thread. I am reading it and thinking *This is exactly the reason why ladies mess with  guys' heads. Such attitudes have confused the ladies and they, on the most part, don't know what to expect anymore. We all are the worse for it. You are the one who asked for the number aint you?

I for one would feel terrible after I have engaged in long conversation and *getting to know* you with a lady just for her to turn around and say no to giving me her number. Some of us like Ladies who know where they are going and the kind of thing they want. And besides, her giving you her number doesnt necessarily mean she is dreaming of dating or going to bed with you.
I can see that you even started a poll on this topic with the options, 1)Of course yes, 2)Probably not.
What about a third one 3)Absolutely not  huh

Thanks people,

I went to CTO yesterday , spoke to two other internet providers

1. IPNX had a good package , I don't need a mast in my house , but they have a maximum download of 6GB per month,
2. Directonpc did not have a price list for me to compare.

3. Another option might be Starcomms EVDO.

Anybody has any experience with these other guys?

I presently use starcomms dial up ,
Please stay away from anything that gives you maximum data download per month. If you really use the internet a lot, you are going to exceed that and you will be cut off. When Direct on Pc started, they did it(dont know if they are still doing it) and it was very inconvenient at my former work place.
I am currently considering Starcomms Evdo(Modem package for Desktop). People I know that are using it are commending it and recommending it. I am currently using multilinks dial up for my home use and I think I have outgrown it, even for home use.

Dont mind udoh zone! Swiftbroadband is the best for now, because we're using it in my office and is very ok.

Advantages.
1. Faster.
2. No network failure.

Disadvantages.
1. You have to pay them before the due date or else they will disconnect u.
2. Reconnection fee is #2,500.00
I think *faster* is relative. For someone who uploads websites and downloads huge files, it may be different from someone whose greatest *geeky* job on the internet is attaching a 1mb pdf file to email .
And whats with the 2,500 naira reconnection fee? Thats absurd. They aint seen competition yet.

The bragging is totally unnecessary because a server with fewer websites hosted on it will be much faster than a server with more websites hosted on it assuming the 2 servers have the same amount of bandwidth available for clients.

Ok, ask google or yahoo to switch to your servers and we will know your servers are really fast.
Good one Afam. I actually loaded the aimtech websitte listed above and abimco at the same time and aimtech site loaded faster

What cities are they currently in? My folks at PH may want to migrate to its cheaper options - they've been complaining of DSTV's ever-increasing prices.
They are rolling out in Lagos for now. They say other cities will follow soon.
TV/MoviesRe: HiTV Website And Services by Egavlas(m): 9:33am On May 09, 2007
somze:
@Salvage
Your link does not confirm most of the claims you made. Please where did you get most of the information. A source confirmed the spanish la liga screening but the EPL packages but still remains your word.

Agreed the DSTV pricing is expensive compared to HITV, but the packaging is superb. The fact that you can instantly know the menu (and a short explanation of each programme) for most of the channels is worth praise. There are a lot of features and services DSTV offers that HITV can not presently. With creative and efficient management, however, HITV may get there in about five(5) or more years. So right now I don't expect much from them.

How much are the equipments?

Will DSTV cease to show live premiership matches?
Hi Somze,
You can take it from me. The next premiereship season will have Hitv showing 8(Eight) Premiereship matches per week while Dstv will have only two. Its the same way people were doubting that Hitv got tha la liga rights untill they stopped watching it on Dstv. From August, Hitv will be in charge of premiereship in naija. They are also going to be giving a match or two(not yet determined) to local stations. The adverts are already going on with BON.
With Hitv, you can also know what is going on in other channels while still watching one.Its not a mere cable company, they have done some work on their system. With Hitv, if you are watching foxsports for instance, you can use the menu and check what is going on on the Hisports channel with a small partition on your screen.

The equipments are 25k for dish and decoder and 3k monthly subscription. However, the agents charge 3k for mounting and installation.
You also have an easy payment option that they have worked out with Bank Phb, Ecobank and Oceanic bank where you get to pay only 6k down payment and get the decoder, dish and 0ne full year of subscription. The amount of N4,500 naira will then be taken from your account each month which will cover the cost of everything plus the one yr subscription at the end of 12 months.

As per whether Dstv will show the premiereship matches, I think they only have rights to only two per week, compared to Hitv's eight per week. You will notice that Dstv recently went to get the French League, and they are getting chelsea tv, manutv and arsenal tv.This is in anticipation of what will happen from august. But those stations, dont have a right to premiership matches and they can only show delayed matches when it concerns their clubs.

I think the 5years you want to give em is too long. I will give them 2years cause when the money starts rolling in from the subscribers, they will be able to do more.
TV/MoviesRe: HiTV Website And Services by Egavlas(m): 11:30pm On May 08, 2007
Hi guys. For those of you who are hanging on with Dstv because of the English premiership, I advice you to start making plans to get Hitv. Hitv has bought the broadcast rights to the premiership package A (or something of that nature) while Dstv could only secure the package B. This means that Hitv, will get the rights to show 8 (Eight) premiership matches per week while Dstv only has the right to two matches per week. Hitv also already has the rights to the spanish La liga and thats why you can't see Ronaldinho and the rest of Barcelona crew on Dstv anymore. Hitv also has a non-exclusive rights to Italian Seria A. They also have exclusive rights to UEFA cup matches, of which they took DSTV to court for showing some UEFA Matches before they stopped.

They don't have the Champions League rights but the local stations here in naija show them so thats not a problem.
Hitv also has rights to Euro 2008 qualifiers.
So whats the implication of all this? Dstv will continue appealing to ladies and teens cause of the other custom channels but for a very large number of individuals who would rather watch football and news(CNN, BBC, Channels, Aljazira), plus 18 other channels, kiddies and God Tv(They say a lot more are coming), Hitv will do thank u.
Why would I pay 9k for DSTV to get channels(most of which i don't watch), when I can pay 3k and watch football and news and nollywood movies and christian tv to my hearts desire.
Its payback time to Dstv for running companies like TITV and FSTV aground.
The Ironic thing about this is that Hitv is already giving a couple of local stations the Spanish La liga, UEFA cup matches, and plans to give 1 premiership match per week as well for free to local stations once the next season kicks off.
Its a football fest for me with Hitv from next season.
