InvestmentRe: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by Elai147: 5:59pm On Sep 07, 2014
nitrogen: Okay, I get you now, right, any arrangement outside the primary market can be termed a secondary market transaction.

What I am just saying is this, there is an OTC market (maybe main secondary market) where rates of bills changes daily, just like stocks, e.g a 91 day bill you bought last week at 9.95%, may have changed to 10.10%, of course, the tenor would have changed to maybe 85 days. Now one can buy that bill at 10.10%, but it isn't accessible by individuals. Arrangements are very much different from what I am saying.

Basically, there is a market where the rates of bills changes daily, and also where big institutions, bills traders, pension fund guys etc buy and sell bills daily. You see that itrade platform, something like that exists for bills trading too.
You are right. In the secondary market there is daily trading of Tbills between primary dealers/market makers in the OTC market where the rates of bills changes daily. There are two types of transactions that can take place in the secondary market: buying from OMO and buying from other market operators. The OMO is not accessible by individuals, only primary dealers/market makers and there are set minimum volumes for the dealers. Non-primary dealers will submit their bids to the primary dealers. Primary dealers will submit their own bids to the CBN and if their bids are successful, they will then issue bills to the various banks/non-primary dealers at their various bid rates who in turn sell to individual investors at lesser rates and make profits.

InvestmentRe: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by Elai147: 7:27pm On Sep 06, 2014
nitrogen: Yours is just an arrangement between you and your bank. They get the bills and sell at a lower rate to you.
If a primary dealer buys in bulk from the primary market and sell to you at a lower rate, it is still a secondary market transaction.
InvestmentRe: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by Elai147: 7:08pm On Sep 06, 2014
nitrogen: Yes, this just confirmed my assertion, you don't buy from the secondary market, that one you are doing is just an arrangement/scheme by the bank.

We have two markets for treasury bills, primary and secondary, secondary is OTC (over the counter), so it means you can trade all tradable bills daily, just like the stock exchange market, but this time, it is done over the counter, and the minimum volume traded is 250m. Most times, individuals can't access it, banks, PFAs, and discount houses do.

Yours is just an arrangement between you and your bank. They get the bills and sell at a lower rate to you.
I understand your point my oga but I don't agree with the N250 million Naira minimum. I think the minimum is about N1 million naira (not too sure though). What if you decide to sell a N5 million Tbill before maturity? Such is usually done in the OTC market depending on the forces of demand and supply just like the stock market. What do you call this one? It is still the secondary market.

SWG1: who is this guy. Pls this outburst and inappropriate choice of words is the reason u need to start from page 1 (including the one we lost to hackers) .If u dont have the grace to do so, come meet Elai or pastor ihedioramma for laying of hands.
kotlass: With all due respect to everyone, I never believed or liked the idea of telling a newbie to go read from page 1. It's almost like a cliche here already. Seems dismissive too. To learn the ropes of stock investment, book recommendations or websites on stock investment would be better. Reading from page 1 familiarizes you with the thread- goal, code of conduct, ethics etc. It is a complex web/puzzle for a newbie. The stock trading strategies and picks on this thread requires that one has a prior knowledge of stock investing which made it easy for most of us that stumbled on this thread.
Just an opinion though.
This is very simple. If you are advised to read from page one, it is not a must that you should start from page one. It's his personal choice where he choses to read from. For me, someone who finds it difficult to read through an interesting thread such as this one will find it boring to read an investment book.

donclark: Thanks guys!

But how do I know the. Value of the share now cos dad didn't spend much on it cos in 2002, N50,000 was sum sort of money but right now I don't know if the share still has value.

Is it possible to invest it on this FTN Cocoa I hear you guys gunning about? Enlighten a Stock Exchange toddler please?
The registrars will give answers to all your questions regarding the stock.

Please don't try to invest it on FTNCOCOA. First, you need to know if the share still exist by speaking with the registrars, get yourself a stockbroker and dematerialise the share certificate and then you can sell. Later you can come back here for advise on stock that you can reinvest the money on. While you are doing all these try to get as much knowledge as you can get on stock investing before you start investing. You should read from page one of this thread, it will help you a lot.
InvestmentRe: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by Elai147: 12:10pm On Sep 06, 2014
Joysmart: visit CSL registrars with the certificate but before you can sell it you need to open a cscs account with a broker in order for them to dematerialize it. Since your Dad is alive it shouldn't be difficult.

Born2berich: IMO i dont think there is need to take up a legal case on this..i have worked with the legal team in my organization and from the little knowledge i have you wont win this case. Do you know why? i will tell you..Wale tinubu stated that the result will be released in september 1 but he didnt state the year..That alone is enough reason to back him up as he can claim sept 1, 2015 etc..So Just let it slide.
I believe he was joking.

Aks: You guys should take it easy with Morgan capital, if you are not satisfied with their service, you can as well do business with other stockbrokers. We want a seamless service but we can all get it all the time because of our environment. Issue can be from Morgan, bank, interswitch or networks generally.

As somebody mentioned b4, whenever you transfer fuund online, make deposit in the bank or want to withdraw from your account, follow up with a phone call/mail them if the fund is not showing in ur account within the hour, that's not too hard a task. This is what i do everytime i make such transaction.
Is it better to remain silent over poor customer service which you pay for? If customers don't complain how do you expect the company to improve on their customers service?

mercylicious: Football betting, is there money to be made there? grin

Getting a TRANSFER button or paygate has its own risks. SECURITY is highly involved cos money is moving.
It doesn't carry any risk because the transfer still has to be approved and processed by the brokerage firm. Meristem has transfer button.
InvestmentRe: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by Elai147: 3:35pm On Sep 02, 2014
Amisec: For those who use morgan, how do I transfer funds from my acct? I can't find any button for this purpose on the webpage.
Choi... I have never thought of this. This Morgan capital shaaaa. Why would there not be a transfer button. Why making life so difficult for your client? Even common football betting site self get transfer button. Smh

I also noticed that my account balance is not usually updated until after trading hours

Amisec: Making deposit and on-line transfer, which should reflect quickly?

I think is on-line transfer.
Why should I be carrying money about when I can do an on-line transfer, without hassles.
Online transfer is better. If you are transferring from a different bank, ensure to do the transfer before 12pm and follow up with an email (copy at least two of their staffs). This was what I did and my account was credited same day. Remember to write your full names as Remark or transfer description.
