1. I don't know why but I could tell if I'd done anything wrong with the number of names my mum uses to call me.

If it's just sumn really good, she used my English name.
If she wanted to send me on an errand: My Yoruba middle name. . . Debola.
But when it's sumn really bad I've done she drops the combo . . . ADEBOLANLE JOHNUUUU OMO AJAYI!!!! BO SIBI!!! (Adebloanle John the son of Ajayi, come here) grin grin

2. When it was time to get flogged, my mum used to ask us where we wanted it . . . a choice between the palm, the back or the buttocks.
If you said you wanted your palm, she'll use the cane on your back and buttocks. . . if you said buttocks, she flogged your palm. grin grin

After sometime we just learnt to tell her the opposite of what we wanted grin grin

haha. I think this idea that "intelligent, sophisticated, enlightened" people don't want to go out, get wasted, and shake body to some mindless song about booty and shayo, is very misguided.

I can even argue that when a majority of that segment ^^ of the population thinks "Thank Goodness It's Friday", that is exactly what they are looking forward to.

It's the myth that most Nigerian parents tell their children to keep them from getting 'corrupt'.

Well . . . this movie was erm . . . what can I say, not my type.
It's one of those movies that make you wonder if they really had to shoot just one movie for two distinct stories.

Haaa. . . . why do people speak so unintelligently like this
Look. . . I rap and you must understand that I love the lyrical and thought-provokin stuff
If u want u can check out my recent youtube vids

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENrm7rW_d_w

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwzBaIjx8iI

My point however is that because music is not lyrical does not make it bad/not good
For christ's sake, some of the best music don't even have lyrics at all, jus ask Beethoven or Bach. . .
My point is this: when it comes to music, the criterion for rating is flexible
Is it a GOOD dance track? or is it a GOOD "track with a message"? etc etc
In fact do you guys realize how hard it must be to make a conventional track that says nothing really but still captures people's attention and sets the artist apart from the othe hundreds of thousands trying the same thing?- Terry G is dexterous, maybe not with his lexical aptitude, but something, maybe its rhythm, or his ability to identify with the listener or giv them what they want to hear when they jus wanna stop thinkin and have fun!!
To some people on this thread, Mozart and Bach are wack . . . their lyrics don't make sense grin grin grin

I dont care what happened when MJ died, but actually, Naija music industry is actually getting dump and silly. Its now easy to sell albums in naija, just get a party beat from Terry G or K-solo(or mat of fact any dumb bleep) and drop some incantations on it. We are rapidly loosing the values of good music in naija but anyways big ups to the ones keeping it real . People like Mode9,M.I, Lara George, Sound Sultan and some others.
I'm saying the whole concept of 'good music' is extremely subjective. . . and to tie it to events in a certain time or place is extremely idiotic.

@blacklion
So only Igbo movie makers should be allowed to do that??
Doesn't that sound stupid to you considering the fact that about 50% of the viewers aren't Igbo??
No one is against the usage of calabar girls with the name ekaette as house girls because we even have a movie for that as well already. The name is synonymous with house helps but we should not extend it to a home wrecker or cheap LovePeddler.

So you are saying now that we already accept the wrong notion that Muslims are terrorist and suicide bombers, we are free to use them as such freely in the entertainment and media industry? Hope you know about the danish cartoon riots and miss world riots in Nigeria?

Those names you gave as examples are just one of the numerous names that can be associated with anything in nigeria so they have no effect like the one in contention here.  As for the ijebu and calabar thingy, it boils down to the fact that some stereotypes are good, something we could just laugh about or not harmful while there are some that can be termed as a no go area or just too sensitive to be used loosely.
No one is saying stereotyping is good, these artists are jst portraying what is already existing in our culture. TV shows still portray Arab muslims as terrorists, why?? Because they exist. . . Ekaette jokes still exist because we have real life Oga and Ekaette stories.
It's so Nigerian of you to live in denial.

How hypocritical is it for you to accept the 'Calabar girls are good in bed' stereotype but start mouthing off when that stereotype mixes with the 'some husbands like to sleep with housegirls' truth.

Match Point

Woody Allen is not quite a genius, but two of his movies in one day and I've noticed a trend.
The average romance flick at the beginning, a burst of action and just when you're waiting for it . . he kills it.

Match Point is quite good.
It would and it might not have which IMO has no significant relation to this name because you and I know the history of this name in the nigerian context. The name has been synonymous with to a calabar house girl for a very  long time and now extending it to a home wrecker and cheap LovePeddler does not argue well. Anyway if the majority of the people are cool with it no problem after all there was a song stereotyping Yoruba women as using jazz in cooking foods to hook up customers and hence destroying the name iya basira.

Hope this will not lead to conspiracy theories linking the tribes of the artist for these two songs lol ( Iya basira and ekaette ). Well the sexual content of the song also is sometimes too raw.
If the name is already synonymous with Calabar housegirls in everyday life, why then should we punish someone for putting accepted everyday life into music??
Isn't that the whole point of having music as the voice of culture??

Why don't we ban Nollywood movies for naming their witches Ngozi or naming their gatemen Sule??
Why don't we ban the beer parlour discussions where people say Calabar girls are good in bed??
Why don't we ban people from saying Ijebu people are stingy??

If this is the only defence NBC can put up, then they are failed as an institution.

Bawss1:
A welcome move from the NBC! I found the suggestive nature of the song rather distasteful, it is not fit to be played especially before children. Citing foreign songs as an excuse is lame, should we copy even the bad things they do. The NBC can't possibly ban all songs but at least they can control/ban the wrongly presented Nigerian ones.
How does saying 'we did it' become graphic??
Do you want us to go back to Bible times and start saying 'he knew her'??

What yardstick exactly is the NBC using to make it's decision? I can bet my last dollar the decision was made largely from "sentiments" and what one idíot thinks is right and wrong!

The way some people spew fuckery is quite amazing . . .
Good music died with Michael Jackson . . . hiphop died with Tupac . . . dancing died with James Brown.

If you're going to criticise stuff, then at least let's be reasonable about it. . .  when last did MJ release good music??
To attach an overly subjective view to an understandably sentimental matter as MJ's death is fine. . . but expecting us to take you serious is impossible.

It always works, let's praise the past and criticise the present, let's embrace the distant and tear apart the one that's right next to us, insult the young and respect the old. . . it's a trend, and it's just daft in my own opinion.

Why can't we judge artistes for their music and not where they're from, or how old they are??
Didn't Michael Jackson's era have wack people like Vanilla Ice . . . I listen to Slick Rick now and I swear, Eedris Abdulkareem will outrap that negro.

You criticise Nigerian music, but I'm still waiting for a plonker to come out and say Dare Art Alade is crap . . . or come here and say M.I and Modenine are not good enough because they're Nigerian.
Or maybe come out to say K'naan isn't good because he's relatively new. . .na there we go get beef.
