You can rate someone higher and still prefer a relatively lower-rated artist. It's very possible
We're not talking about what's possible here . . . we're talking bout what's plausible.
You prefer people because you rate them higher, that's more likely to happen. . . and that's evident in most of the posts on NL.

Genuflect:
The thread is not about who is rated higher. Rather about who you prefer. C'est fini
And you think people's preference has nothing to do with who they rate higher?? or who they think is better??
Music/Radio › Re: Your Best Naija Rap Intro by eldee(m): 8:53pm On Feb 07, 2010
Ruggedman's Thy Album Come intro was next level.
The whole thing about the God arguing with the rest of the Trinity about whether to send Ruggedman to punish rappers on earth was really good.

One big voice said, 'send him' . . . the other voice was like 'but he has to much wahala' grin grin

What's your point with all these 'she became famous in Yankee first'? Who cares?
My point was pointed in my first post on this thread.
She's not as good as Asa, the only reason she's been rated higher is because she's the most famous Nigerian artiste out there . . . c'est fini.

He doesn't talk about his shiit being as stinky as Toronto shiit and get away with it. Now you see why I don't like to listen to either of them much?

At least Drake used swimming, 'cos Nemo's a fish, and swimming in money, and emphasized, 'FIND me' like the title 'Finding Nemo'. I can't think of a better punchline to use to emphasize swimming in money that would fit into that rhyme scheme. That was great. You can make punchlines sound corny, and you can execute them perfectly. That's an example. 'I'm hotter than the sun and colder than y'all' and 'i call them april baby, cos they fools' are corny. Then he tries to execute corny ones well 'i'm so high i can eat a star' and fails. And he's the one who does wordplay like no other?
Oh my dayz . . . I never knew Nemo was a fish!!!
That's the problem . . . you make excuses for Drake, 'emphasize swimming', 'rhyme scheme'.
Dude the only reason you can't think of a better line is because you're not a rapper . . . c'est fini.

The 'hotter than the sun', 'i'm never sprung', 'colder than y'all', 'I'll never fall' . . . let to the 'I'm being hated by the seasons, Bleep y'all who hating for no reason'.
That's corny?? And 'I'm Nemo' isn't?? WOW!!!

hax:
Oh, I said that?
You said Drake was the best on the song. . . I said Lil Wayne and Kanye made him look ordinary.
You backing out already??

hax:
Rolling Stones claims that 'Lose Yourself' is the no. 2 hip hop song *kanye west voice* OF ALL TIME!
They're mainstream. They have to appeal to a wide audience. They give a fxck what the 1 million that bought his album in the first week think. Would Rolling Stone sell if it put Freddie Gibbs or Pill as it's cover artiste? Now if it's Kanye? Or Weezy? Or Drake? How else would it even claim that Lose Yourself is better than Stan? Stan was #7 or so, Lose Yourself was #2. That's a big hint. Lose Yourself was the best selling, I think, and longest to stay on #1. Why wouldn't it be #2 OF ALL TIME?
You see, that's where you flopped. They actually decide what the public thinks.
They make these guys . . . they get the album some time before they get released and do reviews.
The reviews make people buy them.

If the Source does a review and says K'naan is the best thing since Pac . . . he'll sell 5mill.

Are you trying to say Lose Yourself isn't a classic?? Lose Yourself V Stan?? The first verse of Lose Yourself kills Stan.

The only thing good about Stan was the compelling story . . . anyone could have done that.
Loose Yourself was Eminem showboating . . . delivery, multi-syllabic rhyming, metaphors, internal rhymes . . . the beat wants you to start spitting bout the Jimmy Smith in you.

Ask anyone . . . Stan was a better story, Lose Yourself was a better rap track.

Using your analogy . . . Stan should be on top of the list not GMF's The Message. . . afterall, it outsold the whole of the top 5 on the list.

hax:
I find the less popular critics' opinions less,  influenced/wavered? I don't know if that's the right word. Rolling Stone have always sucked, imo, they embarrass themselves every time they post a top 50/100/500 list. Pitchfork gave We Are Young Money a higher score than Clipse's Casket Drops. I can't take them too seriously.
*yawn*
Fxck Grammys. It was bad enough when Release Therapy won it ahead of Game Theory and Food & Liquor. Or do you think 'credible critics' acclaimed it over the other 2?
The Grammys are not a hiphop organisation . . . they pay more attention to how musical albums are.
They'll pick a good song over a good track, a good artiste over a good lyricist . . . that's so easy to see.

Let's end this argument . . . show me one of you 'less popular' critics that thinks Lil Wayne's better than Drake and I'll stop arguing.

hax:
You can't back up your 'analysis', so you resort to this. I couldn't be bothered. I've listened to enough Lil' Wayne to form an opinion on him.
Yeah yeah . . . you obviously do, especially with the way you don't know what Successful's about.
You ask for explanations, I write em . . . then you say you knew already, you sound exactly like my younger sister grin grin

hax:
There are better rappers who rap about the same thing but sell 5k copies a week.
Fail.
I believe I've said I don't like either of them much. I'd pick one over the other, the same way I'd rather be drowned to death than burnt alive. Get it now?€
Well I guess myself, the Music Academy, about every music critic I know would much rather burn in hell than watch ourselves drown.

hax:
Really? It's old. I heard that last year. You claim it shows how good hip hop will be this year. I'm not even going to start boasting about my taste. I try to listen to alot of new stuff all the time. I have like 30 albums on my PC I haven't even listened to yet because I like to see what new peoplle can do. I'm the one telling you to download J.Cole and Pill so you'll listen to better new music instead of Weezy only. So don't think your 'wide range' will help you make more 'informed decisions'. If you really listen to the likes of Blu, Elzhi, Fashawn, Jay Elect, Little Brother, you'll eventually notice that Lil Wayne is generic crap.
Hehehe . . . You made me listen to The Come Up??
Go look at the Jay-Z threads where I was talking bout J. Cole, you weren't even on NL then.
Anywayz . . . as I said before, if you're going to argue J. Cole or K-one Vs Lil Wayne, open a new thread.

This is where I have a problem with 'hiphop heads' . . . I said I listen to a wider range of music and you're telling me about Elzhi??
We're not on the same page homie.

hax:
Really? How does that even make any sense? How do you know he isn't trying to say he's FROM New Orleans? Because you and your unnamed 'top rappers', can read his mind, right?
Unnamed rappers?? KRS-One, Common, Jay-Z, Eminem . . . the list is endless.

That's why I say you need to listen to more of his songs to understand him.
When he says 'I am hiphop', does he mean he's a hiphop artiste?? Or does it mean he is from hiphop??
But I guess you're just been 'sarcastic' as usual cheesy cheesy

hax:
I'm glad you regard me so highly, but I'm not that awesome.  embarassed
Come on. . . the fact that you know more about music than the Grammys, critics and artiste should at least count for sumn.
Don't you like have an award named after you or sumn?? tongue tongue

hax:
I hear it's because Drake is his new ghostwriter, after Gillie the kid left him?
*Yawns* . . .Jay-Z is the head of the Illuminati, George Bush paid Osama to bomb America.
Y'all need to get creative with your theories.

hax:
He's got FLATS in other continents, sir.
My point still stands figure of speech.

hax:
Rakim hasn't retired. Rakim released a nice album last year. He is part of 'the future of hip-hop'. At least, I'm looking forward to his next project over Cudi or Wale or Drake.
Hehehe . . . I listened to The Seventh Seal, it was nostalgic, yeah . . . but it's people like you that don't tell rappers when their work is done.
Rakim has no relevance to modern hiphop. . . Drake, J. Cole, Jay-Z do . . . Rakim doesn't.
While Jay-Z's saying 'Niggas want my old ish, buy my old album', Rakim's still stuck in the past.

hax:
I only bolded that because of the multis.
Hold up. Lemme clear something up. This is the part I meant.
[Weezy]
and I will never stop like i’m running from the cops/
hop up in my car and told my chauffeur to the top/
life is like a f-cking roller coaster then it drops/
but what should I scream for this is my theme park/
That's not 3/4.
Try again.
It's a crap bar . . . multies or no multies.

Well . . . I'm not trying to convince you.
If Rakim said 'pistol on my side you don't wanna hear that thing talk', you'll be all over with that part in your sig already.

hax:
I SAID LAST YEAR.
And you say you have a 'wider range' then you criticize me for 'downloading every available mixtape'. smh.
Lil Wayne's not been at his best with mixtapes recently.
Everyone know rappers slow down on mixtapes after their first multiplatinum album.

A wider range of music son, music . . . you claim to download every mixtape that sniffs the net but you can't even get the correct version of So Far Gone

hax:
You're going 180 now. First you're like 'omg how can you compare 30 seconds to 5 minutes', then you go to 'oh the 30 secs was better anyway'.
180?? You attempt to score cheap points by choosing Successful.
I knew it would only come from someone that's not properly listened to the song . . . and you proved me right.

That's why I dropped the whole concept of the song and now you're clutching straws.

hax:
This is getting annoying. Is Swagga like us off Lil Wayne's album? Because he was in the 2 songs it's an excuse to give it to a poorer song? Or is it that you just don't want to blaspheme or admit that SLU was better?
In my opinion, is a it's better song than Swagga Like Us. Which is better lyrically?? Of course it's Swagger Like Us, but at the Grammys it has more to do with with is more musically creative and the closest to that was Lollipop.

Cool. Comparing his past work with Drake's past work is BS. He doesn't even have an album out yet. And his mixtape is full of singing. I think he's been better on the songs they've been on together. Simple. My opinion.
That's the part I'm struggling with . . . most of the songs, at least the ones I've heard . . .Unstoppable, Forever and Successful, Weezy has outclassed Drake.
But it's just a difference in opinions, it's all good.

Because he has none out? You have no point either. This comparison is unfair anyways.
And that's the sad part, isn't it?
Exactly . . .I do hope Drake goes on to achieve more that Lil Wayne, but he's just not there yet.
With what they've both put out, Lil Wayne is light years ahead of Drake.

It's so much fun arguing with you man . . . at least you do know your hiphop and you're not just one of 'em sentimental people.
Let's just agree to disagree from here, we're seeing completely opposite perspectives on this thing.

Music/Radio › Re: Asa Or Nneka? by eldee(m): 1:50pm On Feb 07, 2010
First of all . . . Nneka can't really sing, she can't rap, remove her lyrics and she's just any other person.
Go listen to From Africa to You off the No Longer At Ease album, Halfcast and you'll see what I'm saying.
Well . . . that's the same with Bob Marley and Floetry, so it's not that much of a disadvantage.
So talking about vocal abilities, Asa tears her apart.

Now about being original, Nneka does, hiphop and R'n'B, rock and soul . . . she even has dubstep versions of her songs.
She sounds more European than Nigerian. . . she's kinda like using Reggae, rock and hiphop, (all of which appeal more to the West) to deliver her message.
She flops when she tries to sound African . . . try Niger Delta off the same album.

Asa on the other hand is more African, her style of music, her lyrics, her look . . .everything.
To her 'yeye' is still the Yoruba word for mother cheesy cheesy

All in all, I think they are two totally different musicians . . . the only thing they kinda share is the messeage.
i'm not a big fan of Nneka. I've only heard the song "Africa excuses" or something like that and i hated the lyrics. they don't relate to the average person living in the country n i found it a bit disturbing.
I see where you're coming from.

The most special thing about Nneka is her view on issues. . . she's half German and half African, that's like being half Jewish and half Arab.
She sees things in a way that none of us can . . . hence the lyrics that seem to escape from the whole 'fight against the government' thing.
She kinda relates more to the rest of the world than she does to Africans.
Infact, only reason most Nigerians ever claimed her was because she got famous in America.

This is a freaking double standard situation man.
I don't care about his desire to succeed, you don't go talking to the press like that.

Yeah, he told the truth . . . Gallas worded the gospel about Walcott too, everyone jumped on his case.

Here's what Gallas said about Walcott:

I think Theo Walcott can be the new Wayne Rooney, but he has to change his style of play.
"He must work hard in training because everyone knows where he will run with the ball. He goes on his right foot so he must work to come on the inside on his left foot.
Now see what Arshavin said about Arsenal
It's bigger than who lost on Sunday, it's principle . . . players don't talk about their fellow team-mates of managers in public.

First of all, AA23 is an outspoken player and you cannot change him at 28. He will speak his mind - both positively and negatively and we'll just have to get used to it. He is a big player with undoubted talent and isn't talking about earning more pay, but speaking his mind on the play of the team and where he thinks the team is going.

To those saying AA23 is not delivering, he's the second highest goal scorer at the club after Cesc, despite not being a forward. Against the 'big' sides, he's scored twice - both away, something no one else in this side has done this season (bar Vermaelen).
Because he's 28 doesn't mean he can't change . . . all he needs is talking to from Wenger.
Gallas was forced to STFU at 75, now he stays 'mum like one of my parents' cheesy cheesy

Come on . . . we can't set double standards in our own team, when a player questions the 'class' of his team, he needs a warning.
Yeah, he scores . . . but he's playing the striker's role, even Anderson would score if he played as an Arsenal striker.

I still insist . . .it's wrong to put down your team-mates in front of the press. Even Cesc shouldn't do that.

I myself don't see much difference too . . . I think he needs to shut the fuck up and get back to doing what he's paid for.
We can't have him always running to the press to talk about in-house issues just because he's worth £16mil.
If you're going to at least insult the team, talk about their strength of character, lack of work ethic or sumn else . . . but class?? Come on!!!

Arshavin needs to shut it . . . Ade was the Arsenal heart-throb before he got crucified.
If he knows his vocabulary is not good enough to avoid using the wrong words, he should stop granting interviews . . . afterall he's not the captain.

And Wenger . . .hmmn
