Those yorubas were spoken to in yoruba in their various homes by their parents and not english.Remember you said that if you speak english to them at home it will not affect them understanding yoruba when it is spoken to them which is a lie.
It will affect your Yoruba definitely
But you don't exactly get labelled an illeterate during the process of picking up Yoruba as a second language, do you??

@Mr_me_too
Stop bringing in the Mexicans . . . they live in the US of flippin A
English is what they speak in informal circles . . . the vernacular is not that too different from the official language
Nigeria's different, once you step out of the classroom . . . a whole lot of other languages come in
And still you live in a system where your status in official circles is more or less based on your ability to communicate effectively in English
Learning English first is an added advantage . . . take it or leave it

@Chuckvyl
You ever heard the adage bout using life's lemons to make lemonade??
It's typical for armchair analysts like you to blame me for the system. . . yeah, it's my fault that the official circles run business in English

Let me explain this to you in Anglais . . . Nigeria is an English speaking country, so English takes a priority, deal with it
If you manage to turn it into a Yoruba speaking country with your wishful thinking, then voila, I'll take Yoruba classes till my fluency in Yoruba dominates my English . . .
Sit there in front of a computer (product of Capitalism) and cry about your Marxist fallacies . . . that's your cup of English tea.

Exactly. . .The music business has always been the same.

Music is about expression. . ."do you!!!". Not everybody is "conscious", not everybody is educated, not everyone likes to dance etc. But music transcends all of that. We are all guilty of having, at some point, been crazy about some dumb song that made no sense!

Most of the people that have posted on this topic are better educated than Beyonce, Jay z, Michael Jackson, Eminem etc. I think I can even say our Nigerian artistes (as far as pop culture goes) are some of the best educated on the planet. An artistes job is to entertain u, not to educate u, inspire u or whateva. If he/she can do all these things at the same time, great!! It makes him/her much more appreciated by a larger audience. But those are not the qualities that make an artiste, its about how well u get across to ur audience. What does ur stage name have to do with anything? That mongrel wrote like 2 long ass paragraphs on that. . .just blowing grammar for nothin

I don't mean to sound so confrontational but this man is obviously clueless about a lot of things. I've never seen such well written garbage in my life! That is a really long article he wrote. . . at some point he must have stopped to think about what he was writing. He doesn't know any better. He is a good writer, but I wouldn't take anything that comes from him very seriously, on whatever issue.
That's a bit harsh . . . but all the same, you made my day grin grin

We can always excuse a couple of mistakes. But when such dominate an important document like CV, it becomes a cause for concern.

The argument that English is not our first language does not hold water. In Nigeria, English Language is the medium of communication from cradle to death.
You do know that First Language and Official Language are two totally different things, don't you??
These people learnt their indegenous languages as their basic language of thought, they were trained to speak English years later in schools.
Half of 'em speak Pidgin English and Yoruba outside official circles, this affects their English Langage skills.

That's why I'll keep laughing at people that come out to support training up kids in indegenous languages. . . that only makes sense in countries like India and China where the official languages are the native languages.
That's pure cultural deprivation . . . c'est fini

Simple! They probably want to tap into the vast North American market not too many people do Sky at the other end of the pond. The Prem ain't exactly a big deal to them they have MLB,NBA,NFL and NHL to worry about

Plus its all about the cash, pesos argent and dinheiros which ESPN have plenty of
I beg to differ . . . the rights are limited to the UK and probably Scotland
Fox Sports own the rights in the States . . . it's business as usual at that end of the pond.

mbulela:
Macca (Steve McManaman) is not bad at all.he is not without intelligence - a rarer commodity in football studios than it should be.

the major problem of Setanta is a lack of content outside the EPL games. as much as their are mad football fans, their number is not enough to sustain a channel without other drawing factors (i am looking at you HITV). that in my view was the singular most important factor why Setanta failed.
Setanta failed because of the global economic meltdown . . . simple
Getting viewers was not a problem, they had the FA Cup, England's Away fixtures, for sometime they had control over England's highlights . . . they had us feeding off their hands.
I even forgot to mention the French League and the SPL

But as many other businesses, they couldn't restructure their loans mainly because banks were not willing to lend, so they lost EPL and SPL. . . the rest was a downward spiral from then.
Noted. . . . .

But ma point is. . . . .If ESPN cannot do better than SKY, why bring em aboard in the first place.
Why pay ESPN to watch live games when SKY can do 1% better than ESPN?
Monopoly is bad for any industry . . . Rupert Murdock had to sell his shares in ITV to ensure competition remained
Competition helped to provide motivation for Sky to make their work better

Setanta is low budget but they have been doing great in North America ever since.
It's just that the idiots they bring on TV don't know nowt about football like Richard Keys or Andy Gray.

How can u compare the Nigerian commentators to the pundits on SuperSports??
SuperSports ain't a Terrestrial channel, NTA are.

ESPN might end up like Setanta. . . . . .Setanta also found themselves in a comfort zone when they won the bid in 2007/8 season.
They couldn't hold up because of the recession. . . . .ESPN might follow suit.
Abeg, the FA should leave SKYSPORTS' monopoly alone. . . . .I want good value for ma money, i don't care about monopoly.
Come on . . . you do know you can't compare ESPN to Setanta
ESPN is a real brand, Setanta was made for the EPL, I watch Presspass on ESPN and it's not that bad

Besides they've go money to employ coaches and retired footballers for analysis
I've seen Ruud Gullit and many other top class coaches there . . . that's a winning recipe, not Ray Parlour and Steve Mcmanaman

Is it me or is this Mr Abati just representing the exact problem with his generation??
There may be a few Nigerians who share Mr Abati’s sentiments and I will blame that on a lack of exposure, lack of wisdom or the need for enlightenment. This cannot be tolerated especially when it is being voiced by a journalist who holds such a crucial position in our media.

There has never been a time in Nigeria’s history when Nigerians have been more patriotic. A time when it has become cool to be Naija! A time when we wear ankara with pride, listen religiously to Nigerian music, watch Nigerian movies and look forward to a more progressive Nigeria. Mr Abati, your generation failed us and we have learned from you guys how not to fail the next generation. Ok to the issue at hand

I was flipping through the musical channels yesterday and all i saw was the "new form" of hip hop that to me were simply nauseating.Soildier Boi was milli vanillin to kiss you through the phone on Mtv base,Flo-rida was on Trace TV exhibiting his new tatoo(or so it seems),Lil Wayne has taken the vocoder thing to ne plus ultra cum he was acting a rock-star rather than a hip hop act. angry Damn!,there's been a volte-face from what use to be. sad cry

If you grew up listening and watching the deep rap culture proponents of the 80's and 90's(Public Enemy,NWA,Big Daddy Kane et al) on Yo!Mtv Rap and Rap City, you can not but be riled by the vitiated versio of rap on offer nowadays.

Turn on my radio and it was a "modern rap song" booming;catchy but scanty beat with repetitive chorus. The snap your finger lean-back schitzo. There's so much of Lil'-Quality of poetry going on by the likes of Lil'-Flip,Lil' Jon et al you'd think there's a fatwa on real hip hop.I was hating on the track but nodding my head nonetheless,nd who amongst us hasn't been a slave to the page of this so called wacka wicki MCs.Haven't we all been transfixed to the videos of an iced out Mike Jones,Lil'Wayne and Lil' what- have-you spewing nothing but exhibiting a Dr 90210 piccasoed vixens!

And i ask myself,at what point did Hip Hop give up it's realness and give us it's ghost? What are the hard-line rules that this new artiste failed? For example,Don Williams,Kenny Rogers,Dolly Parton et al did country music the way listeners will term original way back but i don't hear listeners cast aspersion at the way Faith Hill,Shania Twain,Tim McGraw,Lone stars et all do it now. undecided BUT how many times has the KRS-1 of this world taken a swipe at Nelly?

I asked, are this hip hop heads been primitive,stuck-in-the-past spoilt sports who just refused to accept the train of hip hop has left them behind?
You spew my mind . . . infact in Kanye's words 'we're like a pair of siamese twins connected by brain'

Music and evolution are inseperable . . . Pop used to be Elvis, now it's Justin
Rock used to be Oasis, now it's Kings of Leon . . . even Fuji has changed from what we've always known it to be
I seriously do not understand why everyone has a problem with hiphop.

The most shocking aspect of all this is that people have refused to admit that hiphop's themes and presentation got monotonous
It was like knowing what each rapper was going to throw out time and time again.

If we look at the scenario carefully, it's easy to point out that the artistes that have refused to change are the same ones that have been left out.

Can u (eldee) tell me a planet thats bigger than jupiter? If u can, i would give u a hundred dollars . . . I PROMISE!!!!

ANd YES a planet can be bigger than a star as long as we are talking RADIUS and not MASS
Neutron stars are typically only 10-20km across - so all planets in the solar system are bigger than neutron stars

If we exclude neutron stars, white dwarfs are typically approximately the size of the earth. So all the Jovian planets are bigger than white dwarfs!

The biggest star is ~1000 times bigger than the sun (VY CMa)

And if we stretch it to include dead stars, they are still considered stars and they still glow (at least white dwarfs do).
If we only count stars currently undergoing nuclear fusion processes - then I'll agree that the answer is "no"
First of all, I do not appreciate this stupid namedropping tactic you're using . . .

Coming from someone who finished from a tertiary institution, it's a fucking disgrace(apologies to Drogba). grin
Hehehe . . . don't spoil this one.
I'm waiting for the bumlickers to come here and explain this line.
And it had better be sumn in the line of 'the stars shrunk the day before modenine recorded the song'
