I grew up in a a purely Yoruba state, my parents couldn't risk speaking Yoruba to me at home
She couldn't bear watching me pick up the Egbado-accent
I had to learn Yoruba after I'd already started thinking in Anglais . . . my Yoruba still sounds weird though

I never even learnt Ishan, her native language too . . . but nah, I don't regret it, I'm even planning to go on a Spanish intensive . . .

Skillz, lyrics, beatz and production make a rap song and not the sub-genre.

A rapper needs to be talented and buisness-savvy to make it.
And there is nothing wrong blending the two.

And pls some people need to understand correctly ,CONCIOUS RAP ISN'T GANGSTER RAP.Canibus isn't a conscious rapper.
Exactly what I was pointing out in my first post . . .
Who says it has to be Soulja Boy OR Immortal Technique, we can't just ignore the Jay-Zs and even Jadas of this world

In A Private Experience two women take refuge in a shack in the middle of a riot carried out by Hausa Muslims against Igbo Christians in northern Nigeria a few years ago. One is an Igbo medical student, the other a Hausa market-trader, and their brief interaction affirms the power of humanity to resist and survive tribal warfare. All Adichie's stories are suffused with evocative atmospheric detail. The riot-torn streets outside the shack “smell like the kind of sky-coloured smoke that wafts around during Christmas when people throw goat carcasses into fires to burn the hair off the skin”. And there is plenty of quirky detail too. What do these two refugees from the riot talk about? Well, the Hausa woman thrusts her naked breasts at the medical student with the plea, “My nipple is burning like pepper”.

In her stories about immigration to the US, Adichie highlights the adjustments required when you arrive in the world's most powerful and pervasive country. She invites us to ask whether it is really worth it. In Imitation, a bored Igbo housewife, Nkem, has been deposited in a smart American suburb by her businessman husband while he lives in Nigeria. Despite being part of the “Rich Nigerian Men Who Send Their Wives to America to Have Babies” league, she is still a powerless “Bush Girl” who gets her English tenses mixed up. But finding that her husband has installed a mistress in their Nigerian home galvanises her inner warrior and she takes control of the situation, rendering him mute and compliant.
I think she's the J.P Clark of the future . . . the way she highlights the life of the everyday Nigerian is amazing
She's not going for the exotic Abiku-style plots that fascinate the West, she's presenting modern Nigeria exactly the way it is.
Little wonder she's compared to the Margaret Atwoods of this world.
Wait . . . is that a review from the Times?? Damn, she's good!!!

@A-40
I get where you're coming from
I might unconsciously implied that Pac wasn't successful in his lifetime, but you have to agree that his death increased the hype on him
He was one of the most popular rappers of that era, he dwarfed the Rakims and the East Coast(not B.I.G though) . . . and even after his death he still was, but this hype cannot remain constant for 13 years, it dips slowly.
And other artistes rise to fame . . . people have their periods
Pop Culture is Chicago . . . erm this is metaphor, Chiogo beware

This E! issue . . .lol.
Now let me focus on this, I didn't want to use MTV or VH1, because they are more into contemporary urban music . . . that's still basically another hiphop circle.
What better example than an Entertainment company that has White America and Europe as its major demographic??
And yeah . . . the only thing they do s worship the idols of pop culture
As I said, you got my point, if you give me a better example, I'll gladly correct myself.

As I said, I'm not Elstradamus (never predicted an Arsenal result correctly before grin), but maybe if Pac were still here, he'ld probably be the one doing all those things I listed, but nah, he's dead and now it's the Ems and Hovs doing it.
And yeah . . . as you pointed out, he didn't have enough time to do that in his lifetime, that's the first thing I mentioned in my post.
Jay-Z waited till what?? 2003 before he reached out to the rock audience, Eminem is white but he waited till the third album
We both agree on something at least . . . Moonstone is sumwhere hating this cheesy

@Bamsyle
A wise man once said 'you think arguing with the learned is hard?? try the ignorant Bamsyle' grin tongue Just kidding wink
Now tell me how I'll get across to someone that thinks Tupac is the most talked about dead artiste

Even if we keep screaming 'Hiphop Is Dead' from now till next year's Easter Monday, I think one thing we'll agree on is the fact that all rappers know how to brag.
I'm just opening this thread to appreciate one thing that makes rappers rappers . . . their cocky lyrics, the way they make 10 seem like 1000

The album still sold despite EM's below par production which only show that Pac is still relevant in the game[/quote]Eminem is one of the best selling rappers of all time . . . he's proven that he can sell to different sides of the musical/ethnic/class/Atlantic divide
His work?? Fiddy . . . you have to admit that Em had a hand in 50's rise to fame . . .

Step outside he box and look at this . . . Pac, Em, Jay-Z, LilWayne all belong to the hiphop generation of contemporary music.

The E! thing?? My dayzz . . . are you a 16 year old chic in disguise??

So when next I say Uncle Tom, I'm talking bout my uncle?? This is ridiculous.
Aiite, let me explain this to you, the way I'll explain to erm . . . Chiogo, E! in the context I used it was just symbolism for the mass media and the way they portray celebs these days. . .
Ever heard of E!-status??

Come on . . . you know bout 70% of music sales take place in the year of release . . . given that fact, it's easier for new songs from this time to be downloaded, both legally and illegally, in dfferent countries round the world.
That's just one edge over the Rakims because people download Jay-Z while the hype is high. The 0.75p single download means it's faster to get to listen to artistes.
This was impossible in the early 90s.

I'm arguing with Bamsyle, A-40 and Sauron, I don't expect every letter I say to be taken literally, when I mention E!, every idiot knows I'm talking about today's mass-media.
What's the point of restricting the number of people I argue with if I still have to deal with pips that are incapable of thinking outside the box??

@Bamsyle
I'll have to speed up my reply to your last post

1. Proof?? C'mon Bamsyle, sales in different countries, references in popular culture, diversity of concert audiences, and funny as it sounds even Search Engine referrals(Eminem, 50 and Hov have double Pac's Google hits) . . . even personal experiences(You don't need a degree in Music Technology to know who's hot in Nigeria, it's even easier in the UK) . . . do your homework and get back at me (we all know bout your wiki skills)

2. Aight . . . I respect that but did any of Pac's movies sell $242 mill?? And to think Pac was a better actor. This is the power of modern marketing strategies.

3. And I've proven to you that my mass media argument only applies to artistes whose careers started in this generation of music.
Dude . . . please drop these wikipedia yarns, I'm talking about popularity here not talent. Rakim influenced a majority of the 90s rappers, how popular is he??
He's the most talked about dead artiste?? LOL!!! Bamsyle . . . no offence, but you need some cultural exposure up in your life.

4. Eldee's not half the hiphop community . . . hell, Eldee's not even in the hiphop community. I'm talking about the half that said Notorious B.I.G was the better artiste.
Bout that . . . they told them to vote for the best not most popular . . . dig??

Had to quote this one
Yeah I agree . . . the internet was not popular in Pac's time . . . but even with all that, the late 90s/2000s rappers all waxed together are still not as popular as 2Pac . . . his fame continues to spread by the day . . .
Coming from someone that says I don't have proof . . . u're a joker bruv

peops are always interested in knowing the locus classicus of anything . . . it's impossible to claim you know Rap Music without knowing 2pac . .
I beg to differ . . . in my own opinion (which Ihappen to share with Nas) people are more superficial these days
They tend to forget about the origins and just go for what the media presents to them . . . how, for Bleep's sake do you think rappers like 50 and Lil Wayne sell that much in this era of poor albums sales?? two words Media Hype!!!

In the ideal world . . . Pac should be more popular the 50 and Em put together . . . but come on!!!

You just echoed my point . . . people that claim to know rap know Pac, but what of people that couldn't care less bout hiphop . . . that's where Jay-Z and Eminem come in.
Cutting through gender, ethnicity and social class . . . Jay-Z and Eminem did that
Tupac was in an era where he had to battle a moral panic that was constructed against hiphop, modern day rappers reaped the fruits of his labour.

Reports have shown that many people in the past used to stay in empty shell marriages all to satisfy the 'covenant' thing.
