Speak for yourself and not Igbo tradition. There is no masquerade that is allowed in Igbo traditional practice to use the whip on anyone.

Masquerades are part of the traditions of a lot of tribes in the south of Nigeria, especially among the Igbos, Akwa Ibomites, Yorubas and Cross riverians. Masquerades are supposed to be reverred and in return the masked people are supposed to carry themselves with dignity, earning greater respect from the people.

In those days, there were particular masquerades that were idolized and heavily fortified and would only appear occasionally. Women and strangers were not permitted to view them, otherwise they would face severe consequences. The lesser masquerades would appear regularly to entertain people and not whip them. That how it’s always been with them, especially in the Igbo land as a whole. The beauty in the whole practice has gone away. Whips were meant to serve as threats to keep people away and not to be used to rob the citizens. Chasing people around was meant to add to the fun of it and not to injure either the citizens or themselves.

Nowadays that myth has been lost because of the irresponsible behavior of the followers and the men behind the masks themselves. They use masquerades to rob citizens. Masqueraders rape women and cause serious bodily harms to citizens. Nowadays we see masquerades publicly engaging in gang fights on the streets. That’s not culture, that’s not tradition. That’s pure foolishness, recklessness and crime. Many of them have died right under their cover. A lot of them move about with daggers under them, waiting to see their perceived enemies and stabbing them to death.

I think by now governments should begin to pass laws to end the criminality of masqueraders and restore the so called cultural practice to the way it used to be. The beauty has almost completely faded away. I hope Governors like Soludo who dealt with those oke ite people can get the likes of aka odo and Agunechemba to tackle those criminals hiding under masquerades.

Be reminded of the eight allegations against Governor Sim Fubara, as spelt out by the members of the Rivers state house of assembly.

1. Reckless and unconstitutional expenditure of public funds

2. Unconstitutional misappropriation of public funds

3. Hindering the Rivers state house of assembly from performing its constitutional duties

4. Illegal appointments of persons without allowing for screening by the house of assembly as provided by the constitution

5. Seizure of salaries and funds meant for assembly members

6. Seizure of salaries of the clerk of the Rivers state house of assembly, Emeka Amadi

7. Refusal to implement provisions of the constitution on financial autonomy of the legislature and the judiciary

8. Withholding of funds meant for the running of the Rivers house of assembly service commission and hindering its activities.

Hopefully BUA should come on stream sometime year. If lesser refineries follow suit by getting built up completely, then we add that to the modular refineries, then we can safely say that we are permanently away from petrol scarcity.

If APC presented Rotimi Amaechi as the candidate in 2023, it would have been catastrophic for them. Amaechi passes the streets and no one recognizes him. Obi gets into streets, either in the day or night, everywhere gets lit up.

Anyway, first Sowunmi must remove the log in his eye. He should face his disfigured PDP and leave Obi/Amaechi/Atiku alone with their ADC.

The Senatorial ticket has attracted ex Gov Bello of the same APC and he has declared interest to contest. The present governor was installed by Yaya Bello and it is payback time. The governor will reciprocate the gesture by supporting Bello’s aspiration to become a Senator on the APC ticket.

Now that PDP is having serious issues and has almost been complete wiped out by Emperor Wike, Senator Natasha only bides her time. With her personal person Dino Melaye already in a more stable ADC, she will decamp to ADC. That’s the platform for her to contest against APC’s Bello next year.
