Health / Re: US-based Nigerian Dr. Discovers Drug for Killer Sickle Cell Disease by ell77(f): 7:23pm On Jan 02, 2008
Found some stuff on thiocyanate which i think is the active ingredient but this stuff was from 1986 and I don't really agree with it. Since then no articles have really been published on experiments in any of the journals although there has been a lot of talk. But the truth is sickle cell in general is not reported on as much as other diseases. ~This finding may be nonsense but even if it is not it is likely to take forever to come to effect. It is a very interesting hypothesis though the drug Hydroxyurea that is currently used is a drug that induces fetal heamoglobin in adults so this is a possibility and I think a mediteranean, Asian or African nation will have more of a vested interest in a treatment.

Seun:

I stopped reading when I encountered the line "converts SS to AS". What a silly claim! cheesy

In theory it may be possible. It would be hard to change the genotype but the sickling of the cells is basically down to the charges of certain proteins and we designate the phenotype SS when it has this abrnormal phentoype (-ve) that causes the proteins to clump together and form a sickle shape. If there was a way of somehow changing the charge on a protein from positive to negative in this red blood cell on these proteins (in the production phase perhaps in the marrow more likely to be able to affect than when the cell is ready made) then the cells would not be sickle cells and you could designate them normally.

I know it does sound far-fetched but it would not be an impossible thing to do. They even have gene therapy for Cystic Fibrosis so this is possible. Alot of medicines we have today were discovered accidentally like Curare - tubocurarine and more. But this needs to be represented in a scienctific study - even if no one wants to publish his documents he must have his own these/journal entry detailing the methods he used and the exact results he obtained. I am gonna do a search on this.

@oziomatv - its enough now how is this fun for you? Does it change our situation at all, anyway guess you are just venting, I said what I needed to say I don't like HATE. A free man know not hatred! Your hatred binds you and means those people are an important part of your existance, they own part of your heart. If you don't care about someone's opinion they can't make you angry. Be free and leave Ify alone, she can post where she likes I don't see anything wrong in what she has said.

Lol. Funnily enough i am going to marry a man from Imo state, so thats not my issue.

The reason I cry for peace is I like peace.

I do believe in fighting for the freedom of Igbos (freedom from suffering) but I believe physical fighting only led to loss - Igbos are outnumbered and the best way to fight this 'bondage' is by uplifting your people - helping where you can whether you fight a yoruiba or hausa man it will not make a difference.

You are worried about the Igbo history (which i am well aware of - perhaps not as much as you but enough). I on the otherhand am worried about the Igbo present and the Igbo future. All the energy we use fighting out cousins we could be using to fight out brothers. I know there is suppression even today - but it is not every Yoruba/hausa person whose sole goal is to push us down, and even if it was that is more the reason to focus you efforts in the right places.

Oziomatv - I think you are a good person and you have a lot of passion for your people which is a good thing, you can probably do great things but you can't fight yoruba/hausa people and fight for freedom at the same time. Majhority of Yorubas are in Yorubaland majority of Hausas are in Hausaland majority of Igbos in Niger-Delta. Those who need your help are in niger-Delta. These morons who are against Igbos like the fact your energy may be misplaced as the fight you are fighting you can never win. Don't insult those who don't deserve it, and forget those who do.

Culture / Re: Are Igbos Taking Over Lagos? by ell77(f): 4:41pm On Jan 02, 2008
@oziomatv - I know this was directed at ify but . . . There is no way the nation will ever split - all the oil is in Niger-Delta so lets put that aside for one second. If we are to stay together as one nation with one rule (whether we should be together or not), I think we have to havbe at least some love for other tribes, don't you think so?

I know some Yoruba guys who treat Igbo women really well and some Igbo guys who treat other tribes really well with no stabs in the back. Yes there probably are problems at times and things don't work out for various reasons even the cultural reasons you may be highlighting but everyone's case is difference please. There is no way biafra will ever come to be whether it is the right thing or not - unless they find oil in hausa land. So how do we make Nigeria better if all the tribes are fragmented? Inter-tribal relationships can nsometimes be a blessing to Nigeria in disguise - maybe it fosters understanding and appreciation!

Romance / Re: Help With Nigerian Husband And Misunderstandings: by ell77(f): 3:37pm On Jan 02, 2008
@ Poster, well I am not married but I will advise you based on what i have observed from ym parents, hopefully it is helpful.

Nigerian men who often do things like that are common go to the numerous threads that talk about a woman being able to cook. Food often causes arguments in relationships, especially if the guy is very backward. I would have thought your guy was not that backward as he doesn't even hang around Africans but i am afraid a lot of Nigerian men i know pick and choose the traditions they wish to follow.

You said you work yet you are supposed to cook everything and monitor bowls that are empty in the fridge? The reason he probably put the bowl back in the fridge was because he did not want to wash it out. Than he went back to the fridge hungry and realised the bowl that was there was empty, instead of blaming himself he took it out on you. Sorry. He is wrong, you are right. But I think you can both move on from this if you let him know he should put empty containers in the sink so you know the fridge is empty, or he should allow you to stop working so you can devote all your time to being a housewife. I suspect he enjoys the fact you work as it means your standard of living is higher so he may see reason if you approach the issue delicately like that.

The only way you could know that the containers in the fridge are empty are if you serve him the food directly to his table rather than allowing him to go to the fridge (common in Nigerian culture). Perhaps that is what he meant when he said you are treating him like an animal - making him fetch his own food not caring if it is empty or not! Of course you were actually treating him well as far as I am concerned but since you said you just want to understand him rather than see who was right or wrong i am just giving you my two cents. I am not sure how long you guys have been married but marriage is supposed to be a learning process on both sides. You do your best to please him and he does his best to please you. The Nigerian guys I know don't like talking about issues where they may be wrong so it may be hard for you to discuss these things in depth (like why he feels the need to shout at someone he loves over common food), but just try your best ok?
Culture / Re: Are Igbos Taking Over Lagos? by ell77(f): 3:11pm On Jan 02, 2008

Lovely dreams but I will suggest you pick ONE and work very hard on it.

make it a life time achievement.

First I have to get the money then i will pick which one I am able to do and work from there. funloving:

I once raised in topic in this forum asking what is wrong with the Black Race ?
There is something fundamentally wrong with our make-up, our psyche. We are very, very, very EVIL.
AFRICANS, BLACKS, ARE VERY EVIL. I make bold to generalise, irrespective of what anybody will say.

There are election irregularites all over the world. It took place even in the world's No 1 Democracy, USA but lives were not lost, churches were not burnt and property were not destroyed.

As long as humans run elections we should always expect irregularities but must it be of the magnitude as seen in Africa ? Why can't we have minor irregularities that will still allow the election result to be a true reflection of how the people voted ?

Why can't Africans for once do something right that the world will applaud ?

Very soon we will begin to blame the West for our woes.

Nobody can use you if you don't make yourself available to be used.

The Arms dealer can't force Arms on you unless you are willing to buy

The natural resource exploiter can't just walk into your land and plunder your resources unless you are willing to help him.

Other better countries and continents have a way of safe guarding their people and their resources but Africans have a repulsively ingenious way of destroying their own, with the help of outsiders.

STUPID BUNCH OF HUMANS !!!

Some of what you said is true and some needs to be explored further as it is in some cases more complex than you have made out but i am African and i am not stupid. Please try not to generalise

I saw reports on NTA about the election i have not yet watched the news to see what they will have to say. To me it just seemed incensitive. If the article was about Kenyans killing giraffes they may have devoted more to the article about that you know but human lives are by-the-by. Anyway it's true Africans should report on what is going on for themselves.

@davidif - please oh don't insult Igbos! It is uncalled for. People in power abuse their positions in those areas and non-Igbo areas also. Shouldn't the president enquire why certain areas are not developing - or don't you think it is because they don't care?
Business / Re: Chinese Expatriates Invasion? by ell77(f): 9:37pm On Jan 01, 2008
I have and yes they do. My mum is a Nigerian, my Dad is a Nigerian my brothers are a Nigerian. I am Nigerian. if i was born in a town where oil was leaking into my water or cholera was plaguing me I would like someone to help me. There are many good NigeriansĀ  but even if they were all bad except my family I would still try and help because they are my people and if tomorrow BNP ruled England and sent us all back to where we came from I would find myself in Nigeria. Tomorrow If i complain how bad Nigeria is and how much I hate it someone should stone me because what have I done so far to make it better?

The UK has a lot of opportunities for people who want to become businessmen (banks and business anbgels and governemnt trusts and levys), there are also scholarships, free healthcare, orphanages. I may complain about UK but it does what it is supposed to. Now okay the government carries this out and they should do that in nigeria too, but in the UK they don't have oil per se, they use my tax money to do all this. So if I am to spend my money through tax building the UK 30% to 40% (isn't tax like 15% in nigeria and how many people pay the full 15%) of my income why can't I spend the same amount rebuilding Nigeria. If Nigeria does not deserve the developments I want to give does the Uk deserve the developments it has had?

@Babasin - don't worry Babasin I know that much okay? Well I plan to start my own businesses there andĀ  i feel i have great ideas, my only obstacles will lie in people wanting to cheat me but I am sure i will meet decent people too. In time I aim to start my own charities.

These wont be 'dash-dash' charities. Although I would like to own an orphanage. But I wan't to provide scholarships, I want to redevelop areas that are not as they should be, I wan't to start up a venture capitalist agency where I will invest in local businesses (depending obviously on the market i.e. could aghriculture thrive or is an internet cafe better) and help other men and women to come up too but not after educating them on how to run a good business (that will be the charity part of it), i wan't to open a clinic/hospital where perhaps emergency care is free to those who earn below a certain amount and you are treated first before being asked to pay (if deemed able to pay at all - ok this one na dash).

I will have to be MEGA RICH to do so and i know it is possible, i have worked hard all my life and when I have a worthy cause i am able to pull my superior game out and achieve things others can only dream about. That being said, it is only God who can help me with this so pray for me oh! Atleast even if I only manage to do one of these things I listed it will amke a difference to someone's life and if every Nigerian who could both at home and abroad did the same by now Nigeria would be the land of milk and honey! I do not care about joinning politics for now I believe the answer lies in wealth not politics anyway because even if I joined will I be able to make our president and various governors all good? By the time that happens i will already be dead and i want to make some kind of impact in my life time. Afterall i was born on democracy day I think it is a sign! grin
Politics / Re: Pictures From Niger Delta by ell77(f): 8:58pm On Jan 01, 2008
@Backslider - how do you get funding for this? It is not a bad idea BUT this is exteremely capital intensive and the only people who have enough money to do so right now are politicians, those who own oil and wealthy entrepreneurs. Who will pay for the millions of POUNDS needed to set up universities and fund mining expeditions for this without wanting to make their own profit or own some if not all the oil themselves? You see the problem?

All the same I don't buy into MEND how long have they been doing this the people who REALLY REALLY own the oil and have the power to make a difference can never be caught by such militants the people who are caught are the semi-rich Nigerians who aren't even well educated about the full plight of the people and small children and ambitious oyibo (perhaps greedy but greed in itself is not so bad as long as you are not stepping on the heads of others).

The government are the ones who are supposed to fix things. Even if they don't want to hand over oil, they can take these oil companies to court and use the money to build up and clean the area, provide education etc. So that they will care more about the people and environment. These pictures are worse than 9/11.

Anyway I would not wait for that to happen. Just pray for me to become rich I will develop the area myself! grin
Politics / Re: Genocide On The Watch In Kenya by ell77(f): 8:41pm On Jan 01, 2008
The article you posted devoted 1 tenth to the actual people who died because of this and the remaing 9 tenths were donated to british holiday visits - which by the way are ok because they will be safe when visiting Safari's even when the urban areas are running in chaos!

Romance / Re: Most Nigeria Girls Are Poor by ell77(f): 8:32pm On Jan 01, 2008
@ruescho
-So when did 80% of nigerian women abroad amount to an article from 2000 that says 15,000. There are millions of Nigerian women abroad and if you go to any place where there is a black person in a good job: doctor, lawyer, investment banker, accountant, biochemist, nurse etc it must surely be a Nigerian and there are more black females than males in university here in UK (unfortunately) so explain that. If you see alot of poor nigerians then perhaps it is because one in four black people are Nigerian anyway. So yes there are alot of poor Nigerians abroad but there are alot who are rich and blacks in general don't do so well abroad according to the country because of discrimination or because they enetered illegaly - those prostitutes you speak of were illegaly trafficked if they arrived legally you may find most of them working as nurses. Some were probably trcked if not most like what happens to Eastern Europeans. The people selling them nko are they not doing it for money, they are most likeley poor men! lipsrsealed

Forget that nonsense although I am saddened by the article these women are the type of women who would not come home to Nigeria anyway so I don't know what the poster is talking about. I don't like to accuse people anyhow but I am suspecting this guy is a 419er look at his posting history. He says he can't afford school fees in east Nigeria to the point he is begging for people on nairaland to help him, yet he knows what is going on abroad in terms of occupations of only Nigerian girls. Perhaps he met a girl online from abroad expecting her to be his key to money and she turned out begging him for money. the grass is not always greener abroad but everyone's case is different. shocked
