I think the problem is that, dental surgeons are very few in Nigeria and most people do not know about the academic requirement of dentistry. Because most dental surgeons do not talk much about their profession, and most dental students are so busy with medical and dental postings or exams and hence too busy to enlighten the public. Most people do not even know that dental students write same MBBS exams as medical students organized by Faculty of Medical science and then dental surgery (BDS) exams organized by Faculty of Dentistry.. The only difference is that they commence their specialty from undergraduate level and still undergo a postgraduate to specialize in any of about nine specialties(oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral pathology, periodontics etc) at the West African College of Surgeons while for their medical counterparts, you commence only after the undergraduate in medicine.. In the postgraduate Medical college in Nigeria( college of surgeons), you have different Faculties: orthopaedics, O and G, ENT, Opthalmology, surgery, Internal medicine, Dental surgery (for Dentists)... So, they are all considered as one (atleast here in Nigeria). They all have set of skills that distinguishes them as doctors and make them unique, so one cannot claim dorminance over the other. Now, one should decide which field to specialize so as to become profficient in that field (whether med or dent) and become a consultant in their field. It's wrong for a neurosurgeon to say a dermatologist is not important, or an ophthalmologist to say a dental surgeon is not important. Because when he has a dental or maxillofacial problem, he does not go to see a ophthalmologist, but a dentist.. So, they are all doctors and deserve the right to be because they have the knowledge and unique set of skills which the other does not have. This should be enough to enlighten whoever, unless one's case is irredeemable
The most sensible post I have seen since. I wonder why people will be fighting and jumping up and down. We all are doctors. Everyone should be respected in his or her own right. Don't shade one in order to make yours look nice. Simple and short

Are you serious? Are you even a doctor or you are just a health practitioner who is trying to form I-too-know?

How dare you compare the Medical and Dental relationship with Basic Medical courses?
Are you trying to imply that the medical doctors know more anatomy, physiology and MBC than their Dental counterparts? If that's what you mean, then cursed are you! You must be more stupid than I thought! For Petes sake, we both learned this courses under the same conditions, we wrote and passed the examination on this courses under the same conditions and you are here comparing us to anatomy students?

In clinical school, we both do pathology and pharmacology together, write and pass the examination under the same conditions!
At this level, We have spent 4 years together and in my school 5 years because 400l is for 2 years!
In 500L, we officially separate, the dentals proceed to do Medicine and Surgery!
So basically, the only courses Medics do that we don't are O&G, pediatrics and Mental health! So how did you come to the conclusion that we know less than 30% of what Medics know?
When did I compare you to anatomy students? You choose to compare yourself. I talked about an attitude not compare you. Let me break it down for you.
Bye bye

Even when you graduate, Oga, you know less than 30% of even your dentistry. I guess there is no postgraduate training or consultancy again for dentists. You know everything abi?

I didn't say a dentist isn't a doctor. In fact, registering body for doctors in the country is called Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. During the NMA meetings, you have dentists in attendance.

It was just the way that the guy was talking and showing himself that annoyed me. Matter of fact, he know less than 30% of what 'doctors' according to him know. Na this same attitude that someone who studied anatomy will come out and be forming 'we know what they know. Didn't we do Anatomy, biochemistry and physiology together?'.

Stop displaying your despicable and abysmal level of ignorance. This is a public forum. Who told you it's only oral cavity dental surgeons studied? I am a dental surgeon. My part 5 bed side exam was a DM patient of which I was expected to know everything about diabetes ranging from clerking, features, signs and symptoms diagnosis, complications and management during medicine and surgery exam with those that were studying medicine under the same exam conditions and pass mark. No part of your body is in isolation. Different parts of body work together as a system. That is why you must know everything as a doctor
If anything is wrong with a part of your system, manifestations may be on a distant site. Dentists are complete doctor just like those that studied medicine
That you are a dental surgeon does not and will not make you know 80% of what medical doctors know. There is a reason that people are called specialists, because they are well versed and adept in the specialty. I dunno what Part 5 is, whether it is an undergraduate exam, which I feel it is, but even when you have just graduated with MBBS, you have barely scratched the surface of medicine. You are just someone who should know what to do after clerking+examination, manage and make a referral if need be.
Do you know that a detailed text on Diabetes, which you preached to know so much, or even something as common as meningitis can fill a small library, and you are claiming to know 80%. If you know 80%, there is no need for specialisation.
Of course, medicine is system based. You treat your patient as a whole. That's why a doctor should know something about every system and everything.
I won't want to join words with you and return insults, but I am surprised that you did insult me, being a 'doctor' that you claim to be. Apparently, you were not trained in character but just academically. You are not the only doctor on nairaland.
That I am a medical doctor would not make me claim to know even 30% of what a dental surgeon knows. I knew enough about the your discipline to pass through school way comfortably, but I won't claim to know even half of what you know. It is this kind of 'know all' attitudes that creates scenarios at times that makes the public roast us. THE GOOD DOCTOR IS ONE WHO KNOWS WHEN TO REFER, SIMPLY BECAUSE HE ACKNOWLEDGES THAT HE KNOWS LITTLE OF WHAT THE PERSON HE IS REFERRING KNOWS.

Almighty Dental surgeon my foot.

Mr Ponzi Hater, it clearly shows that you are ill-informed or an outright illiterate in the field of Dentistry. Dental and medical students study the same courses up to part 4 and in some schools part 5. Dental surgeons know more than 80% of what medical doctors do know . Medical doctors know nothing about Dentistry. Dentistry is a broad specialty with many subspecialties under it. They ear the same salaries (CONMESS) and in abroad dentists earn more. You are very wrong that Medicine is for the smartest. In OAU, a number of dental students have won first prices in Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology in preclinical classes where medical students are despite the fact that dental students offer more courses. To me, they are medical doctors, but dentists as specialists just like gynaecologist, urologists, neurologists etc. Mr Ponzi, try to explore and be more exposed.
Oga, you don come. How person weh deh study to specialise in the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus, know 80% of what doctors who study the other parts of the body? Explain please. The oral cavity is less than 1% of the body

This is obviously a doctor commenting and he just made common sense. The women obviously needed blood and the husband was not available to make provision on time for one by paying at the payment point. In most Nigeria government hospitals, you make payment before services is rendered. This is as a result of abuse by patients who run away or refuse to make payment when services are rendered before payment.
It depends on the nature of service being offered. In emergencies, blood and IV drugs, and even investigations are done using emergency care forms, which can be later offset by the caregivers. However, it is pertinent for the patient's relatives or caregivers to be around for these things. You won't expect the doctor or nurses to be chasing drugs or blood. It is not their duty. It is the duty of the caregiver. I remember the countless times I have had pity or was compelled to do these. But heh, Nigerians will talk and use every opportunity that presents to lash at medical personnel when ever they are placed on the altar of public opinion. Health doesn't require emotions in making your decision. That a patient is crying and shouting will not make you to take a wrong management protocol. What you don't know, you simply don't know.
But who cares? Abeg, if you are a young doctor, make plans and leave. This country has no plans for you. Not the government or the ungrateful public

Even private hospitals are not left out. I know someone who went for antenatal in the last weeks of pregnancy and they took her bp. It was high but the nurse didn't utter a word. Thankfully this lady had been browsing pregnancy related issues and challenged the nurse. The nurse now sent her to the gynae on ground.
Nigeria is bleeped up.
A lot of 'nurses' in private hospitals are auxiliary nurses who don't know and cannot interprete data and clinical signs. They aren't real nurses. They are usually employed to save cost. I detest that practice and would want it expunged if I am in power.

My brother, I get your point. Your parents went to the Motor spare parts line to get a container. They had more capital than this woman and they were in the location where customers usually come to buy parts.

In this woman's case, she used 120k to make a container, some extra thousands for a show glasses. After all these, she's saying she needs more money for the confectioneries. Which is more important, the snacks or the container? She focused on the container and she's unable to produce d snacks.

I give kudos to her for coming up with this despite her limited resources. Wish I could get her contact let me also send her sumtin small.
Dude, I get you now. I also love your constructive argument. I am really happy that you didn't bash me, like people do here. You can still look for her Twitter handle and contact her. It is there, I think. Good job

OkoYiboz:
This is exactly what happens when someone without financial education comes into sudden 'wealth'. Actually, I don't blame her cos she's done pretty well within her limited exposure.

She has built a container in a remote area, far from customers and has ended up with limited funds for the actual confectionery business itself. I think it would have been better if she rented a smaller shop in a more conspicuous place and put the bulk of the capital on the confectioneries itself. Better still. she could also have gotten 2 salespeople to help her sell at designated points based on 'sell and return' or commission basis and reduced her expenditure on rent.

Tantalizers behaved like this woman. They invested their capital and profits in building a skyscraper in V/I known as Kanti Place just by Eko Hotel. The financial pressure of the project sucked life out of Tantalizers restaurant which was their cash cow and made tantalizers the culinary scarecrow that it has become today.

Kudos to her, she needs our support to do better.
Oga, it is easy to sit there and be analysing anyhow. I remember when my parents wanted to get a container like that for selling motor parts, I know what it cost them. That her own container is small self, unless you want her to get a shop the size of a 'St Louis sugar packet'. Depending on how neat and all, they spent almost 250k alone for that container. And the site where they sell it is still an area where spare parts are sold at Aba. Forget all these our armchair analysis, things are expensive. I just ordered for a friend a Lenovo tab off Konga at 115k, this is a tab I bought around August last year for 68k. My parents paid for their container more than 4-5 years ago, and that container now would not be the same price now.
My point is, she can really eke out a leaving from that place. Don't despise the days of little begining.
Thanks

I used to be pissed at all the brouhaha sorrounding the politics of Abia state, because the state sucked at infrastructure and there appeared to be nothing being done by the incumbent. However, I entered Aba this week and saw that Gov Ikpeazu has gone back to the master plan on trying to restructure Enyimba city.
First, he razed almost an entire one-quarter of a street that was sited on a swampy area supposed to serve as water catchment close to the famed Ukwu Mango. On going to Ariaria to get some stuffs, I observed that he has started attempting to work on Faulks road by demolishing illegally constructed shops that had been brought to the fore of the road illegally. Even the banks were not spared.
Now, I support that. Aba needs someone with balls who will hit it head-on so that sanity can be restored.
I am not a fan of Ikpeazu, because I believe he is riding on a stolen mandate, but for this, and the construction of Faulks road, old express road.....that I believe is in the offing, I doff my cap for him.
