Ezekiella:Talking from a commercial point of view. At ten weeks, the marketable fruits have been harvested. |
Xlyad:Till the ground at least 1ft by 1 ft dimension and plant. That's how I plant. Also other farms around me. |
Idemujoseph:Dear Joseph, From my own experience, realizing is different from profit. You can realize 50k but what about your cost. but if 50k profit is what you mean then we can talk about the plant management. Water and chemical management are one the most important factors during the dry season as there will be less humidity and more pest. if you solve this, then you can make more than that as a profit during the dry season because during the dormant months of no rain, you will still be selling and the price will be at least double high and the roads to the market will be free and dry. Also i noticed someone's advice on making beds for ugu. this is a no brainer during the dry season, dont try it. And then if you are going to do ugu during the dry season, you need to plant between september and october for upland planting. I hope this little advice helps. |
aquadude15:From my own experience, it is between 8-10weeks. at 8 weeks, the fruit/seed production becomes zero while the leaves starts turning yellow rapidly. |
Most comments and advice on this thread to the OP have been Greedily and Gluttonously given. As a business person, the first thing i will advise the OP or anyone in his situation is to first checkout for that thing he loves naturally and turn it into a business. also i will advise that he can look around his environment and source for that item that can be produced easily but is scarce in other environment. he can also look at going for items that cannot be done without in his environment- mostly food items - raw/cooked - e.g - buy dried pepper like 5k, Salt - 1k, onion - 3k, palmoil - 5k, seasoning - 3k etc and use the balance for restocking (NB: these items can stay at least 6mths without getting spoilt) - he that is down need to fear no fall. start like this from home and you will become a household grocery person. Looking at all these, OP should think deeply before investing. |
bilag17:@bilag17 Good Morning Sir, how is business and family. I have not been around for quite a while. As discussed, I ventured into cropping due to the limited time I have to take care of my stocks. I hope to be back to this venture as soon as possible. Very glad you are still active on this thread to show us the way. I only have positive reviews with your broodstocks and i hope you still have them in their lineage. My shout out also goes to @excelsiorfarm , @robonski15, @Ttalk and other contributors. i will always update the house. NB: Agriculture is the only respectable job that does not require your CV though you have to be very tactical. For those doing earthen pond farming, its time to fortify your barricades to prevent flood (Just my advice). Emmanuel - 08183549869. |
austinomd:Dear All, i thought about coming here to continue sharing my experiences on my Ugu project. I decided to leave it alone for seeds and not touch it due to the wicked market conditions and it ended up being a blessing in disguise as the drought finally set in. This is approx. 7 weeks of no rainfall at Ikorodu, Lagos and am smiling because the weeds are busy protecting my very vulnerable plant roots for me to avoid them from burning out while that of other farms has started withering off. Male flowers has started forming so i intend weeding & fertilizing it once the rains begin in September while praying & hoping that it will produce the seeds i will use for my dry season farming in November as the cost of Ugu seeds is outrageously high and that is the only limiting factor for me to embark on dry season farming. i am patiently waiting for those who set the market conditions during the dry season while i will keep updating the house as i journey through. potential dry season buyers should keep this number 08183549869- Emmanuel. |

austinomd:I do not plan to sell leaves by November. I plan to start planting by November so that my leaves will get ready by January. then I will sell throughout the dry season. I have access to at least 2-3 acre swamp for that and I tend to utilize it very well. though it depends on accessibility to and cost of seeds at that time. on seed formation, you need to apply fertilizer especially potassium and calcium based fertilizer if your plant exhibit such symptoms. Ugu will naturally start to produce if you leave it for that length of time without disturbing it. though, from experience, you need to have cut it for at least 3-4 times before leaving it for seed. |
OluchiDelly:Thank you @OluchiDelly. right now, penetrating these market is not that easy because of the assumed glut and it is not economical to cut your leaves, pay for expensive logistics as a result of bad roads due to the rains only to get to the market and still sell at half your cost price to those extortionist market women. I wish there was a platform where buyers can meet sellers directly to bypass these middlewomen. even my mentor who brought me to the game has abandoned me because of the glut as he cant share his customers with me. that's the reason for this post. I am looking forward to positive buyers. but in case I do not find any, I will leave my plants for seeds to plant by November. Then, I will know that it is my season. |
okoroemeka:Thank you for the advice. Though I had intention of selling the leaves based on promises here and there especially from the so called market. but you know, until your product is ready before you know your customers behavior. I then realized that the law of demand and supply governs market behavior and not relationship. they suddenly started changing their mind. I even decided to give them on 2 weeks credit but they are even reluctant to receive it. I can imagine how oyingbo will be flooded with vegetables by now plus the extortion in the name of registration with the union. I have decided to use it for seed production to fortify my dry season November farming if I do not get a good market for it. may God keep us till then. but anyone still interested can call my no. 08183549869. |
