TOPIC: A FOUR-WAY RESPONSE APPROACH
READ: EPHESIANS 5:9-12 (NKJV)

5:9. (for the fruit of the Spirit [is] in all goodness, righteousness, and truth),
5:10. finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.
5:11. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose [them.]
5:12. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret.

THE MESSAGE:

The text for today gives us guidelines on how to respond to the darkness of the world system around us. The first step is to live in the light. There is a force which darkness cannot resist, and this force is light. To live in the light is to live the life of Christ. The second is to use the light to discern what the will of God is. This discernment involves engaging the Holy Spirit in your decision-making, aligning your choices, behaviour and decisions with God's will and standards. It requires that we understand and follow God's word. The third step is to reject darkness. In addition to living in the light and discerning the will of God, we also need to reject darkness. All unrighteousness and worldliness should be rejected by sincere believers. The fourth approach is to expose darkness. This means that believers should not remain silent or passive in the face of evil or wrongdoing.

We are called to stand against injustice, immorality, falsehood and also bring them to light. By so doing, we contribute to the transformation of society and promotion of God's word. Can one describe your life as living in the light or as living in darkness? Avoid darkness and live in the light!

PRAYER: Help me, O God, to cast off the works of darkness in my life, Amen!

READ: EPHESIANS 5:1-8 (NKJV)

5:1. Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.
5:2. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.
5:3. But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints;
5:4. neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.
5:5. For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.
5:6. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.
5:7. Therefore do not be partakers with them.
5:8. For you were once darkness, but now [you are] light in the Lord. Walk as children of light

THE MESSAGE:

In this passage, Paul was urging the believers in Ephesus to imitate God and walk in love, just as Christ loved them and sacrificed Himself for human kind. Paul also emphasised the importance of living a life that is separated from sexual immorality, impurity, and covetousness. Every kind of filthiness, foolish talk or crude joke, should be avoided by us as Christians.

These instructions above apply to us today. Beyond a divine Code of Conduct, unholy living has a tendency to deny one an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Again, we see from the text that another reason we should live in holiness is that we were darkness, but now we are light. Therefore, as children of light, we should walk as those representing and radiating the light of Christ. We are now in a generation where some persons do not take holiness seriously: A lot of loose living, uncleanness and immorality now exist, even in the assembly of believers! This should not be so. The word of God is clear on how we should live while in the world: As believers in the light. The instruction is clear - show the light! Beloved, let today be another divine opportunity to show the Person and character of Christ in you.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to be and remain an agent of the light of Christ, Amen!

TOPIC: THE BEAUTY OF THE CHURCH IN THE FACE OF HER VARIED GRACE
READ: EPHESIANS 4:7-11( NKJV)

4:7. But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ's gift.
4:8. Therefore He says: "When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men."
4:9. (Now this, "He ascended" -- what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?
4:10. He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)
4:11. And He Himself gave some [to be] apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,

THE MESSAGE:

The gift of Christ is grace, and what He gives to believers is the gift of grace. This gift has various dimensions, manifesting as grace. If you can measure the gift of Christ, it is only then you can measure the varied grace He has given to His children. This gift of grace shows His triumph over our foes such as sin, Satan and death. What a tremendous gift His death and resurrection have released unto us! Christ also gave us the five-fold ministry gifts for equipping the saints and for building up the body of Christ.

It is so tremendous that everyone of us, including a new convert, is blessed with a measure of this grace. "And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace" (John 1:16). The picture that comes to my heart as to how we are to see the gift of Christ is "Joseph's coat of many colours." It is one coat but made of different colours. In the same way, the gift of Christ is one varied grace. This understanding will end competitions and the feelings of inferiority or superiority amongst us, as we will now appreciate the uniqueness of our individual grace.

PRAYER: Father, help me to use the grace in me to edify the Church, fostering her unity and beauty.

TOPIC: THE UNITY OF THE BODY OF CHRIST
READ: EPHESIANS 4:4-6 (NKJV)

4:4. [There is] one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling;
4:5. one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
4:6. one God and Father of all, who [is] above all, and through all, and in you all.

THE MESSAGE:

Our text this morning reveals the source of the unity that exists as it were, in the body of Christ. It is a unity founded on God's oneness. We worship one God in trinity and the trinity in unity. That is, they are distinct in person but one in divinity; every quality the Father has, the Son has too, and the Holy Spirit also has. We are members of one body, distinct from one another, yet sharing in the one hope, faith and baptism.

If we are from God, we cannot but reflect the same oneness amongst ourselves. We acknowledge our distinctiveness, yet we must seek out for those common grounds we share together, for in so doing, we will appreciate our distinctiveness by seeing them as reflecting a dimension in God. What we share in common is above whatever reason we have for our disagreements. "One God and Father of all: who is above all, and through all, and in you all". We have One God who is above all our reasoning, argument, differences, and even our denominations. Are you working for the unity of the body of Christ, or are you fighting to defend your denomination?

PRAYER: Father, help me to see more, what binds us together. May the oneness that exists in the Godhead find expression in Your Church.
