Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state Sunday urged Nigerians to resist what he described as the rascality of Presidency officials who he said are bent on destroying our hard-earned democracy and emasculating the National Assembly.

Ayodele Fayose The governor said:
“The major difference between democracy and dictatorship is the presence of the legislature in democracy and its absence in a dictatorship”, adding that efforts by this administration “to hand-cuff the National Assembly is a subtle plot to foist full-blown dictatorship on Nigerians. He therefore charged Nigerians to resist such development, saying:

“In doing so, we shall be defending our democracy and we shall also be defending ourselves and generations of Nigerians yet unborn. This democracy cost us a lot in blood and sweat. The labour and sacrifice of the heroes and heroines of our democracy must not be allowed to go in vain”, he said.

The governor made the remarks in a statement released in Ado-Ekiti Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, saying it is a shame when the Constitution of the country is violated by Federal appointees and the Presidency keeps silent. “It confirms that the Presidency is the one behind it. In the uniform saga involving the Comptroller-General of Customs, it is safe to say that the Presidency is in support of Hammed Ali against the National Assembly.

“It is scary that a whole Senate of the Federal Republic has to bow to an appointee who had needed the same Senate to confirm his appointment. In a democracy which thrives on separation of powers, this is tantamount to an invasion of the hallowed chambers of the legislature, in the same manner that we recently witnessed against the Judiciary.

“When the Presidency accepts and defends the arrogance of one man against the time-tested and practice-honoured intricate system of governance, then, the system as a whole has collapsed. It is even more dangerous that the courts have been dragged into this obvious plot to destroy the legislature just as we recently witnessed a similar plot against the Judiciary itself”

“It is an open secret today that many judges are being blackmailed to do the bidding of the Presidency and the ruling party. It is also embarrassing to ask the Senate to maintain status quo on an issue that borders on the performance of its legislative duty”, he added.

“Presidency appointees are ridiculing and sneering at the Legislature, which is comprised of the elected representatives of the people; Presidency appointees are relentlessly and without remorse tearing the fabrics that bind this country together: What are they turning this country into? When last did this happen in Nigeria? “Magu’s nomination has twice been rejected by the Legislature; yet, he sits pretty in office: Under what law and by whose authority?

Mrs. Jamila Shu’ara, permanent secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education, who should have retired two years ago, is being brazenly kept in the civil service in flagrant violation of extant civil service rules and regulations.

Where else in the civilised world can that happen?

“If a power-drunk Presidency is bent on violating the law, why can’t the individuals concerned be men and women of integrity?

“What is the essence of sending appointees’ nomination to the Senate? It is so that the Senate, which is the authority constitutionally-saddled with the responsibility to confirm or reject such nominations, can perform its duty.

And its decision is biding; not advisory like some chop-and quench lawyers are rationalising. And no nominee, who fails to pass the Senate hurdle, can sit in the office to which he had been nominated.

“The spirit as well as the letters of our Constitution; and, indeed, the pillars of democratic governance erected this road block to enforce checks and balances and keep the Executive in check because power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely “Otherwise, we shall have dictatorship on our hands and President Buhari would soon become Emperor Buhari in the same mould or even worse than those of Emperor Jean Bedel Bokassa and Emperor Idi Amin Dada. God forbid!

Fayose then warned that “the infractions by the President’s men are becoming too often, too many, and achingly intolerable. We run a constitutional government and not a dictatorship. It is a shame that they are all behaving as if Nigeria is a banana republic”.

The Presidency has said that President Muhammadu Buhari has no certificate case hanging on his neck as being insinuated in some quarters.



Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, gave this clarification while reacting to a national newspapers reports where the president was featured among prominent Nigerians the paper alleged have certificate scandals.

Shehu, however, exonerated President Buhari from such category of Nigerian leaders with questionable certificates.

He enjoined editors of the newspaper to “update their records to avoid making this repeated mistake.”

The statement read in part: “In reaction to your cover story this morning Sunday, March 26,2017, we wish to emphatically state that President Muhammadu Buhari does not fit into your categorisation of leaders with certificate scandals because he bears none that is on available records.

“In the course of the contest for the office of the President in 2015, a number of wild, untrue and malicious allegations were made against him in order to stop him from contesting for the office in the election.

“The issue of certificates was raised against him but the campaign successfully dealt with the allegations by providing evidence that not only was he qualified to run, he had a far higher academic qualification than is required by the constitution. As a result, he went on to run for the office and eventually won.

“Since the purpose of the challenge was primarily to stop him from being a candidate in that election, the challengers either voluntarily withdrew or abandoned the cases soon after he won and all of them were subsequently struck off by the courts.’’

The Presidential aide therefore maintained that President had no certificate case hanging on his neck.

The leaked report of the State Security Service to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has vindicated the Senate on its repeated rejection of Ibrahim Magu as substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, its spokesperson said.

The SSS report, leaked on Friday, was a response to Mr. Malami’s request that the security agency back its earlier allegations of integrity deficiency against Mr. Magu with documented evidence.

According to the report, the SSS dispatched 12 documents to Mr. Malami, including 11 that tried to link Mr.
Magu with Mohammed Umar, a retired air commodore on trial for money laundering and illicit possession of firearms, and one on how he was “severely reprimanded” by the police after official documents of the EFCC were found in his private residence.

Based on the report, the Senate spokesperson, Aliyu Abdullahi, in a statement over the weekend, said the legislative body had vindicated.

“Following several calls made to me today by journalists seeking my comments on the leaked report on Mr. Ibrahim Magu which was more damning than the one submitted to us, I can only say that myself and my colleagues have been vindicated,” Mr. Abdullahi said.

The Senate had twice rejected Mr. Magu’s nomination by President Muhammadu Buhari. Last December, his rejection was announced after a Senate closed-door session, citing a security report from the SSS. But President Buhari re-nominated the acting EFCC Chairman and absolved him of culpability in respect of the SSS allegations.

But during his confirmation hearing, following the re-nomination, Mr. Magu had a below-par performance while another SSS report, reaffirming earlier position that he should not be confirmed because he is allegedly integrity-challenged, was raised by Dino Melaye. Therefore, the Senate declined confirmation.

“From that report which is now public, it is obvious the DG SSS even tried to give Magu soft landing in the report that was sent to the Senate. The recent report is messier and shows that our decision not to confirm his nomination was right,” the Senate spokesperson said.

“We therefore call on all Nigerians to continue to have full confidence and trust on the Nigerian Senate as it discharges its responsibilities according to the letter and spirit of the Nigerian constitution.”
In the letter to Mr. Malami, the SSS said: “An officer appointed as Ag. Chairman of EFCC should by all means be one of impeccable credentials, with proven integrity and capacity to lead the nation’s fight against graft in high and low places. Thus far, it is evident from MAGU’s antecedents that he is by no means that kind of
officer.

“His relationship with Umar MOHAMMED which involved disclosure of very sensitive and classified official documents in his possession shows lack of professionalism and assails his integrity. Moreso, for an officer who was indicted and nearly dismissed six (6) years ago, to again be involved in similar circumstances, it is clear that MAGU is a perennial offender and cannot change.
“Also worthy of note is the fact that MAGU exhibited a total lack of judgment where it matters most. He accepted to move into a tastily furnished accommodation without any scrutiny of how it was furnished. This is curious and speaks volumes of his personality.”

But Mr. Magu responded to the allegations against him, refuting the allegations and saying the SSS is integrity-challenged.

In its report, the SSS also accused Mr. Magu of victimising a Stanley Lawson.

“A further demonstration of MAGU’s questionable credibility as an untainted anti-corruption official is his failed bid to settle personal scores with one Stanley Inye LAWSON by placing him on Security Watch Action.

It was however discovered that LAWSON was actually working in the interest of the Federal Government and the Action was subsequently expunged.”

A PREMIUM TIMES report, however, found that not only was Mr. Lawson linked to a fraudulent deal, he returned his share of the loot believed to have been stolen by former petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

Despite the resignation of the Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Jumoke Akindele, the crisis among the state lawmakers has remained unresolved as the acting Speaker, Malachi Coker, refused to step down for a new speaker to emerge.

Coker presided over the plenary session of the House following the resignation of Akindele on Monday.

It was gathered that an agreement was reached by all the lawmakers, during a reconciliation meeting with state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, for Akindele to resign and Coker to act and organise an election for new principal officers.

A source told our correspondent, “It was agreed that the Akindele leadership would step down on Monday and the Coker leadership was to take over the control of the House for two days (Monday and Tuesday) and step down on Wednesday for a new leadership to emerge.”

Coker, however, denied there was such an agreement.


“The 13 members on my side in the House remain together. There is no crisis among us on the change of leadership of the House,” he said.

SUNDAY PUNCH also learnt that the lawmakers, particularly those belonging to his faction, were angry with Coker’s refusal to step down and that they were planning to have him removed.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State has insisted that the refusal of Akeredolu to pay the salaries of political appointees that served during the administration of Olusegun Mimiko was deliberate.

It was gathered that the state government paid February salaries of civil servants and political appointees of Mimiko’s administration.

However, Chairman of the PDP in the state, Clement Faboyede, told SUNDAY PUNCH that Akeredolu left out many of the appointees, paying only a few of them.

Faboyede, who did not give the exact number of the unpaid appointees, said they were over 100, saying Akeredolu only paid salaries to Mimiko; his deputy, Lasisi Oluboyo; ex-Chief of Staff, Dr. Kola Ademujimi; and ex-Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Rotimi Adelola.

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday gave vice chancellors a marching order to expel students with less than 0.5 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from next academic session.

Such students, he said, are unserious elements that should not be accommodated any longer in higher institutions.

The President also cautioned governing councils and managements universities against muzzle-flexing and ego-tripping, which he said had thrown affected universities into avoidable crises.

Buhari spoke at the 31st convocation of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT).

He further assured his administration was committed to the 2009 agreement entered into with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).



This, he noted, led to the recent setting up of a committee to renegotiate the contentious agreement.

Buhari, who was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Onwuka, told vice-chancellors and their managements to practise transparency, accountability, fairness and ensure discipline.

He said: “We must stop to continue housing adventurers, who have no business remaining in the universities beyond the time specified for their studies in the universities.

“In that wise, it is being proposed that at the end of this academic year, any student with less than 0.5 CGPA should cease to be a student of the university and should be shown the way out.

“The universities must continue to have people who are serious in what they have come to do.

“If you have less than 0.5 in your CGPA, you are out. You are out for good so that the space will be left for those who have come to do serious business.

On governing council, he charged them to avoid ”unnecessary muzzle-flexing and ego-tripping that throw affected universities into avoidable crises.



“They must look after the welfare of staff and students and ensure proper development of their universities.

On the contentious 2009 agreement with ASUU, Buhari pleaded with the lecturers to give peace a chance, by coming to the negotiation table in the best interest of higher education.

He reassured ASUU and other unions that government was committed to quality education in the universities and other layers of the education sector, including the welfare of staff in the system.
