Thank you - when you boil it with the skin do you cut it up first? And do you eat the skin?

You are right that he won't cook! angry
FamilyRe: Abortion: Who Commited The Crime/sinned? by English1(f): 7:02am On Jun 07, 2007
"Most people are of the view that abortion is a sin comparable to taking a human life."

Really? Can you prove that? At least I only gave my opinion, as asked for, I don't assume I can speak for 'most people'.
In the UK, 76 per cent of the British population support a woman’s right to choose. (to have an abortion). see here for article

I wouldn't hold your breath. It's a bit early to be worrying about any details of something that probably won't happen (it might eventually, but not in the near future).

The current government has always resisted such action. Who knows what future governments will do, but I have to say that if the Conservatives win the next election I think they are even less likely to do this than labour.

'Tabling a motion' in parliament just means that they want to discuss a topic. It has nothing to do with changing/creating/voting on legislation. With only 30 MPs out of 646 interested in this, it's not exactly a hot topic. It's just part of the start of the campaign. Campaigns like this can take years, if they are ever successful.
HealthRe: Bathing Every Day Not The Best? by English1(f): 7:24am On Jun 06, 2007
Funnily enough I read an article in the newspaper yesterday saying that parents shouldn't bathe their babies more than three times a week as it is drying to their skin. They should wash the babies on the other days.

Just shows the difference between bathing and washing.
HealthRe: Bathing Every Day Not The Best? by English1(f): 9:17am On Jun 05, 2007
Yep, in Europe 'bathing' would mean sitting in a big bathful of water and washing. Showering is standing under a shower. Anything else we don't call bathing. So if you filled up a sink with water and soap and stood there naked and washed yourself thoroughly all over, that's not called bathing, it's called washing. That's how we wash without bathing cheesy. That's what I meant by 'bathing' meaning different things to different people.

so, in Europe, just because someone doesn't 'bathe' everyday it doesn't mean they haven't cleaned themselves thoroughly. I think this is probably where some of the confusion has come in. We just use different words to describe the same things. Not everyone does 'bathe' every day - but I don't know anyone who doesn't wash at least once a day.
FamilyRe: Abortion: Who Commited The Crime/sinned? by English1(f): 7:06pm On Jun 04, 2007
It's the fault of both of them but it's not a sin.
HealthRe: Bathing Every Day Not The Best? by English1(f): 12:39pm On Jun 04, 2007
I wonder if 'bathing' means different things to different people. You can wash without 'bathing'.
FoodRe: Recipe For Chin Chin by English1(f): 12:12pm On Jun 04, 2007
Ha, I tried to make some the other day and it all went a bit wrong. For a start I used self-raising flour instead of plain. and then I had to guess the quantities because we don't use 'cups' here in the UK.

It came out like donuts instead (and was very nice) but does have anyone have a recipe that tells you the quantities in ounces or grams not cups? And I guess it is plain flour not self-raising?

What else can I do with plantain? It's my boyfriend's favourite thing. I've been making do-do by just frying it in a little oil (is that right?) but I'm getting a bit bored with that. How else can I cook it?
PoliticsRe: Is Satan Really A Black Man? by English1(f): 11:46am On Jun 04, 2007
I don't think people visualise Satan as a black man. I can't think of any movies where a black man plays Satan. What movies are you talking about? He's usually shown as a red devil or as a white person.

See the movie 'Bruce Almighty' to see Morgan Freeman (a black man) playing the role of God.
Christianity EtcRe: Could Jesus Have Been A Black Man by English1(f): 11:41am On Jun 04, 2007
I don't know what he would have looked like, but I'm sure he wouldn't have been the blue-eyed blond you usually see in pictures, as how many Jewish people in the middle-east look like that?!

RomanceRe: 3 Years Older Than My Boyfriend: Is It Ok? by English1(f): 9:34am On May 29, 2007
All this worrying about age confuses me, really it does.

I know people much younger than me that I have a lot of respect for. I also know people who are much older than me that I have little respect for. You get respect from how you act, what sort of person you are, your character. The date you were born doesn't have much influence on those things.

CultureRe: That's A Nigerian? How Can You Tell? by English1(f): 7:50am On May 24, 2007
No, it's not a bad thing. Like I said 'Everyone always looks nice, just different.'

Sure, we also make sure that our accessories and outfit go together, but perfectly matching shoes and bags isn't our thing any more. Not for the under 70's anyway.
CultureRe: That's A Nigerian? How Can You Tell? by English1(f): 4:34pm On May 23, 2007
I'm not sure I can narrow it down specifically to Nigerian but I can nearly always spot someone who is from Africa, as opposed to born in the UK, or caribbean.

Clothes, hair, body language, all just a little different. Sometimes very different. Show me an African man wearing a business suit and 99% of the time I'll know he's African, because they don't wear the same style/fit as British people.

Likewise, these days women in the west don't match their shoes and handbag, so that is a dead giveaway!

cheesy

Everyone always looks nice, just different.

TravelRe: Travel To Europe In July by English1(f): 10:13am On May 23, 2007
Whatever the situation is in Estonia (and I doubt it is good) even if you manage to 'vanish' to a more developed European country your opportunites, as an illegal immegrant are very poor. In the past, illegal immigrants could find work but now it is almost impossible. Thousands and thousands of legal EU citizens have moved from the poorer countries to the richer countries, and companies can employ them for tiny wages. Why would they risk huge fines and jail by now employing an illegal immigrant.

If you hit Europe as an illegal immigrant, someone without a work permit, you'll end up doing what you see all the other illegal Africans doing. Standing on street corners selling handbags and running whenever the police appear, and barely earning enough to eat. With virtually no chance of converting to legal status once you are here illegally, it's a bad choice to make.

Work to come here legally. Otherwise you will regret it.
FamilyRe: Can I Marry My Brother's Wife Sister by English1(f): 9:35am On May 15, 2007
Of course it's not incest. You are not related to the girls at all.

Anyway I'm confused. Is she his wife or just his girlfriend? Not that it makes any difference really.

It's not like that everywhere.
TravelRe: Experience Diversity, Explore Opportunities: A People To People Experience: by English1(f): 3:12pm On May 13, 2007
sounds like a con. Why should you pay non-refundable money just to apply for something like this? It's just a holiday. So they get 200 people applying and end up taking 2 people - who have to pay for their trip as well?
TravelRe: Thailand Vs Nigeria by English1(f): 3:10pm On May 13, 2007
Yuk, all that talk about women's bodies and how 'easy' Nigerian women are, and how to go to a prostitute.  angry

You should have described it as a pervert's view of Nigeria.

TravelRe: What Was Your First Job Abroad? by English1(f): 10:53am On May 09, 2007
RichyBlack - yes you are right, of course some people go straight into great jobs. (but my point is that if you can't, you shouldn't be too snobby to do a menial job).

I'd rather sweep the streets than have my parents support me as an adult - I'd find that so embarrassing. How can you be a real adult if mummy and daddy are still looking after you? It's a matter of pride to me. Some people would be too proud to work in a fast-food shop but I'd be too proud not to earn my own money instead of acting like a child.
TravelRe: What Was Your First Job Abroad? by English1(f): 1:57pm On May 08, 2007
Junegirl - most students, international or not, do these sorts of jobs to help pay the bills while they are studying. It's hard to find a good job that fits in with study hours. People here don't see anything shameful or wrong in doing this sort of thing. Most professionals I know have done a stint in a grotty job or two!

Egbon, yes the regulations have really been tightened up. Companies have to ask all new employees for proof of legal work status, even white English people. I've had to show my passport to new employers.

There's no shame in earning money to pay your bills. I think that many graduates/students coming here from abroad seem to think that they are above doing the sorts of jobs that graduates/students do here to support themselves. Perhaps in their own countries only poor/uneducated people do these jobs, but here it is different. Of course, no-one wants to be stuck doing this sort of thing for the rest of their lives, but it's very common for people here to take whatever they can while they look for something better. Taking jobs like these doesn't mean you get labelled as someone who can only do those jobs. I'm a professional, now with my own company, and in the past I've worked in factories, supermarkets and a hospital laundry. My own son is currently working as a barman while he studies. My best friend used to be a waitress and a barmaid and now 3 years later she is the head credit controller for a whole group of companies. My boyfriend was a professional with many years experience and good qualificationswhen he moved here and had to start off working in a factory and as a taxi driver. He now owns a company employing 10 people. You have to be prepared to start at the bottom, no matter where you come from.

Christianity EtcRe: A Beautiful Analogy For Atheist by English1(f): 12:32am On May 08, 2007
That's rubbish. The analogy doesn't work at all.

How does it explain how some people without God can live long happy healthy lives and some people with God do nothing but suffer? If you go to the barber, your hair will be cut. If you don't go to the barber, your hair will not be cut. If you have god, you can still suffer. If you don't have god, you still can have no suffering in your life.
