Yakubu Gowon, a former military head of state, says Nigeria would not be dependent on fuel imports if plans by his administration to build five refineries had succeeded. Nigeria currently imports most of the refined petroleum products in circulation through crude oil swap deals and falls prey to scarcity of the products from time to time. The government owns four refineries with a combined installed capacity of 445,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) but have been operating well belowncapacity, hitting an all-time low in 2017. But speaking at the second annual Oil and Gas Trainers Association of Nigeria (OGTAN) international conference in Lagos on Monday, Gowon said three refineries designed for local consumption were built during his rule between 1966 and 1975. Gowon said one of the export-oriented refineries would have been dedicated to the local market to meet rising demand. “During our time, we planned to build five export- oriented refineries to be able to deal with exporting of crude oil for refined products,” he said. “But then, we had the three refineries–Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna–for home consumption. “Today our consumption has grown more than the three refineries can do, and what would have happened is that we would transfer one of the export-oriented refineries to feed the local market. “That is the way that it would have been.” The former head of state hoped that the modular refineries coming on stream will reduce the nation’s dependence on petrol imports and bring an end to subsidy. “With the modular refineries coming up, I hope things will improve and there will be reduction of our dependence on export of our crude oil for refined petroleum products as this has created a lot of problem like subsidy and other challenges,” he said. “I hope the modular refinery will solve the problem.” https://www.thecable.ng/gowon-we-wont-be-depending-on-fuel-imports-if-my-plan-to-build-five-refineries-had-worked |

A total of N13 million was budgeted for telephone calls in the office of Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo state, in 2019. The office of Agbola Ajayi, Akeredolu’s deputy got N5 million, still for telephone calls while N2 million was set aside for telephone calls in the office of the senior special assistants to the governor. This provision was made in the budget passed by the Ondo house of assembly in January but made public last week. In a copy of the budget seen by TheCable, N1.066 billion was provided for gift items during festivals and children’s party as well as hosting of state guests during special events in the office of the governor. The amount also covers donations to unspecified beneficiaries. N50 million was provided for donations in Ajayi’s office. The breakdown, which was published under special programmes in the 2019 estimates, has N500 million earmarked for “hosting of state guests during special events”. Also a total of N336 million was also budgeted to cater for gift items during festivities and children parties, just as N230 million was set aside for donations. The governor’s office also has N107 million on local travel and transport; N2 million on electricity and N25 million for office stationery and computer consumables. Also to be spent is N13 million for printing of security documents, N53 million for maintenance of motor vehicle and transport equipment, N12 million for maintenance of office furniture, N19 million for local training, N150 million for refreshment and meals and N26 million for welfare package. When he presented the bill to the lawmakers in December, Akeredolu had said the main objective of the budget was to advance the state to the “next level” through completion of ongoing projects. https://www.thecable.ng/n13m-for-phone-calls-n500m-for-hosting-guests-akeredolus-2019-budget |

President Muhammadu Buhari has been blasted by
the The Northern Elders Forum, NEF, stressing that
the current insecurity in the North showcases
leadership failure and irresponsibility of governance.
Speaking to newsmen after the forum’s meeting in
Zaria, the NEF Chairman, Prof. Ango Abdullahi called
on President Muhammadu Buhari to demonstrate
higher level of concern and sensitivity to the plight
of traumatised citizens, especially in Zamfara,
Katsina, Kaduna, Benue, Niger, Plateau and Taraba
States. Apart from the Presidency, the NEF also slammed other tiers of government for failing to address and arrest the abject poverty and under-development in the country. It said Nigeria has the resources and ideas but lacks the political will to tackle the problems. According to Abdullahi, “There is serious irresponsibility of governance in the country, especially in the North; the leadership is not doing enough to meet up the challenges of poverty and under-development. “We also demand a decisive, comprehensive and fundamental government actions against poverty, underdevelopment and insecurity affecting North as well as show leadership and compassion which are reciprocal expectation of the Nigerian people.” NEF said recent report of an international organisation revealed that 90 per cent of the over 13.5 million children out-of-school in the country were from the North. It added, “The children will be adult in the next 10 years; no education, no vocational training, what do you expect then? Insecurity situation.” Abdullahi expressed sadness that instead of development, northern states were living under horrendous Boko Haram threats, banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, marauding youth gangs, herders and farmers clashes. “It has become imperative for the forum to call President Muhammadu Buhari to respond to threats faced by northern Nigerians following incessant killings in some states,” he observed. https://dailypost.ng/2019/04/15/buhari-govt-failed-nigerians-northern-elders/ |

Abubakar Malami, attorney general of the federation
(AGF) and minister of justice, has accused the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of “taking the
freedom of speech too far”. Malami was reacting to the allegations that he was involved in a plot to cause constitutional crisis in Rivers state. The PDP had alleged that Malami and Rotimi Amaechi, minister of transportation, were pressuring the supreme court to reverse the nullification of the primaries of Rivers chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC). The court had upheld the verdict of the trial court that excluded the APC from participating in the general election that held in the state, ruling that the APC did not conduct credible primary elections. But fielding questions from state house correspondents on the outcome of the federal executive council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday Malami said “the PDP has taken freedom of speech too far.” He said unless otherwise proven in court that he is involved in the act, the allegation will remain an accusation. “Regarding what was leveled against me by PDP, I think it remains an accusation. It has to remain so until proven through a judicial process,” he said. “But for me I think it is freedom of speech that has been taken too far.” https://www.thecable.ng/malami-pdp-abusing-freedom-of-speech

One Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, a graduate of the University of Birmingham, National University of Singapore and University of Gloucestershire, has claimed in a controversial piece that some Kannywood the actresses are lesbians while most engage in prostitution. Read below: PROMISCUITY IN HAUSA FILM INDUSTRY A veteran Hausa actor Malam Ibrahim Mandawari about 13 years ago complained of how the Kannywood actresses became rich overnight. He stressed that his years in the industry alone was more than the total age of most of them, but he did not have what they had in few years they spent in the industry. That was in those days when all they had was a little compared to what they are having/ getting now. And, in those years, most of the current actresses did not join the industry. Some of them were in their husbands or parents houses. What Ibrahim Mandawari was trying to point out was that a lot of them were only using films to advertise themselves. This is true because we have seen how they run a fancy and buoyant life out of their usual earnings. We are also aware of how big and rich men sponsor those celebrities to trips around the globe. So in essence, if truly they live this joyous and rich life within their legitimate earnings without engaging in prostitution, why are their male counterparts not as rich as they are? We recently gathered about N270 through an Instagram group NORTHERN HIBISCUS to Chiroki who is battling for survival, selling “kunun aya”. Now imagine if he is also a woman. What we are seeing now is a total disgrace to the image of Hausa culture hey claim they represent and Islamic tradition they came from. They spoil children’s training instead of teaching virtues, norms and values they ought to. It is true most of them are promiscuous. We know what it takes a lady to start acting in Hausa movies. They have to give themselves out to producers and directors, at most times, to even the person introducing them into the industry. They enslave and exploit the girls in the name of what they call ‘kan ta waye’, meaning ‘before she get exposed’. A person introducing them exploit them sexually first because he knows he won’t be able to get them once their customers set eyes on them, She will one day be richer than even him. Some of us going to Kano know all these. We know where they gather, the hotels they stay and what they do. This is the reason many responsible parents ban watching Hausa movies in their houses. In my father’s house for instance, it is prohibited to play those movies, except out of our father’s knowledge. He has done his part by making sure his children are not exposed to that irresponsibility in the name of entertainment. We can all tell who are their customers. Our leaders and politicians are undoubtedly their customers. I once met one of them in Cairo sponsored by a politician ( I’ll not mention name), he later met her there and they stayed for two weeks. They ask them to get visa, travel to a particular country, lodge in a hotel and wait for them. Then they tell their families they are travelling abroad. No wonder they are now dominating even our political space. Our politicians are now finding pleasure in engaging them in campaigns, but the real motive is hidden. The fact that some of them are even lesbians is true. I know a hotel in Zaria they visit and stay throughout some weekends. A friend once went there to drop a parcel for one of them, and unfortunately he saw a girl he know inside a room with some of them almost naked robbing and romancing each other and at the same time taking syrups and other drugs. The girl is now a professional lesbian in Zaria, recruiting many young girls into the act courtesy of her association with Kannywood actresses. What happened recently between Hadiza Gabon and Amina Amal is further revealing what they really are and what they stand to represent; promiscuity. Gabon has the gut to confess that Amal approached her with demands but she refused. What made Amal to have feelings for her is another question, but one can’t visit a market he knows a certain commodity can’t be found in. But the fact remain, most of them are promiscuous and lack morality to be celebrities to our children. This is the reason responsible Kano people rejected padded proposal by Abdulmumini Jibrin to establish a film village in Kano, which would eventually turn recruitment center for prostitutes and harlots, or even gay advocacy center in the name of entertainment. Is left for parents to monitor who becomes their children’s role model. Auwal Mustapha Imam https://www.tori.ng/news/120186/some-kannywood-actresses-are-lesbians-and-harlots.html

Nigerians have been warned to avoid this type of meat as it causes cancer, heart disease and shortens your life. New research has linked both red and processed meat to a higher risk of certain health conditions, such as diabetes, coronary heart disease, and even some cancers. Previous studies have examined the effects of eating moderate-to-high amounts of meat on mortality. However, the impact of consuming a small amount has remained largely untested. Researchers at Loma Linda University Health in California aimed to address this imbalance in a new study, according to a report by Medical News Today. “We wanted to take a closer look at the association of low intakes of red and processed meat with all- cause, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer mortality compared to those who didn’t eat meat at all,” states lead author Saeed Mastour Alshahrani. The team’s findings suggest that eating small amounts of red and processed meat could increase a person’s risk of death. Another study provides more evidence that a plant- based diet is healthful. The researchers used data from people who took part in the Adventist Health Study-2 (AHS-2). Between 2002 and 2007, this cohort study recruited close to 96,000 Seventh-day Adventists living in the U.S. and Canada. Adventists are an interesting group for scientists looking into factors relating to the diet. About half of these believers are vegetarian, and those who do choose to eat meat consume very little of it. To see whether meat consumption had any effect on mortality, researchers analyzed two factors. The first was the cause of death of more than 7,900 Adventists over an 11-year period. The second was a dietary assessment of the same individuals using food frequency questionnaires. The researchers noted that meat intake was low. Among the people who reported consuming meat, 90 percent ate 2 ounces or less of red meat per day. When they evaluated the deaths, the investigators found that cardiovascular disease was responsible for almost 2,600 of them, while more than 1,800 deaths related to cancer. The results, which feature in the journal Nutrients, showed that there was an association between the consumption of a combination of red and processed meats and a higher risk of both total and cardiovascular disease deaths. Processed meat alone did not show a similar trend. Certain groups appeared to be more susceptible to specific meat types. For example, unprocessed red meat was “significantly” related to a risk of all- cause mortality for white people but not for black people. When the researchers looked specifically at the risk of cardiovascular disease mortality, they noted that this was only significant among women and black people. Black people and women also had an increased risk of all-cause mortality from eating processed meat. However, the team only identified a link between processed meat consumption and cardiovascular disease in women. The researchers did not report any significant findings relating to cancer, but they noted that other studies have found evidence of a relationship between meat intake and this disease. As a result, they suggest that this association may only become apparent with higher meat consumption. The authors of the new study believe that their work supports previous conclusions. “Our findings give additional weight to the evidence already suggesting that eating red and processed meat may negatively impact health and lifespan, ” comments Michael Orlich, Ph.D., co-author of the study and co-director of AHS-2. The study also shows something new by demonstrating that eating even a small amount of red and processed meat could be worse for health than eating none. The study has both strengths and limitations. Researchers adjusted the results for various factors, including obesity, physical activity, and low intake of fruit and vegetables. To strengthen the findings, they also took into account specific dietary factors, such as intake of dairy, whole grains, and legumes. It also helped that relatively few of the participants smoked or drank alcohol. However, the study relied on questionnaires, which could cast doubt over the results because people may not recall consuming food that they eat very little of or consume irregularly. More research will be necessary to support the findings of this study. It is also still unclear precisely what causes red and processed meat to lead to adverse health outcomes. -NAN Share this news: https://www.tori.ng/news/120046/eating-this-type-of-meat-causes-cancer-heart-disea.html
