Eze Promoe: That was why I used instances from English words.Even still, English pronunciation is in no way similar to most Igbo pronunciations, and Igbo tone use is way too complex for just a list of written words. How would you be able to tell someone the difference between 'he is at the back' and 'he is on a fish', or 'walked' and 'copied' through English pronunciation? It won't work. It's hard enough teaching someone face to face. The only reason we can read written Igbo here is because of guess work and experience. It's the equivalent of teaching Mandarin through writing, or even any other language. |
There's absolutely no way you can teach/learn Igbo through writing, especially through written words with no notes on the intonation of the word. |
They probably mean the Lagos middle-class accent. |
I know that all the sons, and maybe even daughters, are given land, but unlike the okpara they can choose to live on other lands that they own, even if it is still in the village and they are never given the main compound which is always reserved for the first son and his family. There are also siblings that live closely together, maybe because they do not want to move out or sisters that didn't marry, or for whatever reason, but still the okpara owns that land. The practice is one of those things that is done in most parts of Igboland. |
Again, since the okpara inherits the compound of his father, it could be the importance of expanding and spreading out the lineage is mostly down to ulu, since they don't get the main compound. |
I also see a pattern of ulu being 'more cherished' but I only put this down to the ulu usually being the last born/younger child, and the okpara being the one who is given a lot (maybe too much) responsibility even from a young age. nedu210: like the first and last child, the second is also very important and some times well cherished than the first child, in my part of igboland they are called ulu nwa, and they usualy named after their maternal grand parent making them an 'ogo'. Ulu nwa are more respected both in their village and maternal village. They are called nwa ulu in northern igboland and nwa olu in southern igbo land. They're called ụlụ in northern Abia as well. |
Fetish cultures like the Pentecostal Church, many evangelical churches in fact. Claiming things as part of a Nigerian culture when the are not, like women wearing skirts only. Using the bible and any other religious text to justify stupidity. Waiting on "God's time" when it comes to life or death issues and so on. |

By the way are we arguing about 150 years ago or 15,000 years ago?!?!?! |
shymexx: Did they also wait at the coast in Angola-Kongo??OOOOOOO! CHIM O! Are we talking about Angola, or Namibia or Azerbaijan?!?!?!?!? If entire villages were running at the site of Europeans barely 150 years ago what makes you think European people had a presence in the area? |
shymexx: This is the link: http://www.eupedia.com/europe/Haplogroup_R1b_Y-DNA.shtmlAnd it says absolutely nothing about Igbo populations. |
shymexx: Kidnapping is different from conquering... It isn't news anymore that Europeans went into the hinterland in Africa to capture slaves by themselves... If they did the same thing around Africa(most were not documented), what makes you think they didn't do the same thing in Igboland??NO, Europeans waited at the coast ALWAYS, this was even confirmed by Olaudah Equiano who trekked for days with his kidnappers across land and river to the coast where the boat was waiting. |
shymexx: One-drop is the same thing everywhere, even in Europe... Mixed raced people are considered light-skinned blacks out here and most of them live as black people...If one drop were the same thing in Europe and everywhere then mixed race people wouldn't be getting the privileges the rest of the black population does not. Anyway, the point is Mariah Carey has nothing to do with the magical British ancestors of the Igbo who managed to NOT get eating by wild hippos and NOT have their heads used as a charm or even better, a headdress for a war dance because they flew in an early air balloon and landed in Oguta lake. |
shymexx: Haplogroup R1B (Y-DNA) Map...And is this the map that you've based your entire R1b Igbo European fantasy on? Did you actually try and check if this map was accurate and if r1b is common among Igbo population? R1b exists NOWHERE in West Africa. |
shymexx: How about the slaves who escaped??1. NOPE, Europeans NEVER hunted for slaves in the Igbo region otherwise they would have jamed the Aro who would not let them take away this trade so easily (the British only entered Aro in 1901 after fighting with the kingdom for months, with trenches and everything). 2. You still haven't provided any sort of research that reveals that one of Africa's largest and oldest ethnic groups have significant Euroepan ancestry. You still haven't provided me with any Igbo family (in Igbo land) that claims a British ancestor. You still haven't explained why the Europeans created homes for their African mistresses and children in city quarters all over West Africa, but non in Igboland. |
shymexx: If Berbers are indigenous to Libya, how come archaeological excavations keep digging up pure negroes in North Africa and Libya?? Where were the Berbers when Hannibal was in Carthage(Don't tell me Hannibal was a Berber as well)?? Where were the Berbers when the Moors ruled North Africa??I'm not even interested in this sort of black-nationalist argument about Nuba people taking over Dublin. All I know is that Berbers are indigenous to north Africa and have been victims of Arab imperialism. Whether there were Maasai people called Hannibal ( by the way from which African language did this name originate?) or Zulu's ruling Tunisia, I don't care for this talk.shymexx: Mariah Carey is 50% black - her dad has both Afro-Venezuelan and African American ancestry and her facial features(except prob. the cheekbones) look Caucasoid to me...Yes, USA Black, but not black in the sense of more than 90% black African ancestry. |
Another thing that Is Mysterious about the whole "Igbos obtained their complexion from Mixing Is" Their mixing happened relatively recent. As compared to cases such as the Fulani and Somali So one would presume that since the "mixing" took place more recently, that would Theoretically lead Them scoring higher on the Admixture charts. Seeing as how they didn't have enough time to "Remix" back into something more close to purity. Yet they don't score high...as a matter of fact...they don't score any points on admixing charts.
And there's absolutely no memory of magical British forefathers in the Igbo hinterland. The same hinterland where Igbo people were running away from 'white-spirit people' when SOME British explorers finally ventured inside in the 19th century until the 20th century. |
shymexx: If Igbos never had contacts with Europeans before colonialisation, how come they make up a large percentage of the slaves taken to the new world??In the slave trade era, there was something called MIDDLEMEN. The KALABARI who do in fact have SOME European ancestry as well as a good number of solid European family names, are the ones who greeted the Europeans and then sold Igbo slaves from the Aro-Igbo who trekked to Bonny and other places after getting their slaves from the inside where raids were tearing up the land, on the other side were the EFIK of Calabar. Mind you these journeys were made by men only (apart from captured people). Igbo people NEVER sold slaves directly to Europeans in significant numbers. |
shymexx: Kris Humphries is quarter black, but he looks 100% white...Another one with a MIXED and a white parent. Common sense. Mixed is only truly considered black in the US. |
shymexx: Berbers are just a new group created by Europeans to give the glory of the Moors(black people) who conquered and ruled Southern Europe during the dark ages to their mixed offspring... Those who lived in Libya during Ancient Egypt were blacks and the Phoenicians who came afterwards with Hannibal were also blacks - hence why Gaddafi never recognised the Berbers and their language... Gaddafi confirmed it himself!!This sounds like gist for the truly crase. Berbers are the indigenous people of northern Africa, and as you said, not all are "white". Gadafi was an Arab and the Arabs conquered and are suppressing the Berbers. Anyway Libya is not my concern because even the ancient Egyptians took up paint and drew what they look like for all to see. shymexx: Berbers are just a new group created by Europeans to give the glory of the Moors(black people) who conquered and ruled Southern Europe during the dark ages to their mixed offspring... Those who lived in Libya during Ancient Egypt were blacks and the Phoenicians who came afterwards with Hannibal were also blacks - hence why Gaddafi never recognised the Berbers and their language... Gaddafi confirmed it himself!!Mariah Carey's father is from South America and is probably more mixed than someone with one white parent which is why she looks like that. So you can't judge through facial features but skin? |
U can't even understand what is wrong with some people. Isn't it common sense that if it was the British that gave the Igbo population their ethnic features (which a stupid conclusion seeing as Igbo people do not look much different to other African populations), then there would be enough people to remember this? Especially when, in your whacky theories, all Igbo people were supposedly dark until their women were molested and then the babies came out lighter, which means women were having foreign looking babies in the village. Have any of you even stopped to even pick up a book, google, or ask about Igbo history, society, and culture? Have you heard of Europeans having babies with African women and allowing them to travel back to their traditional communities. Please! |
shymexx: What's Berber? - that's another term for Arabised Moors(black people) who became light-skinned due to excessive inter-breeding with Arabs... FYI, Tuaregs are also classified as Berbers and most of them are dark-skinned...Berbers are different from Arabs, there have been lighter skinned people living in north Africa (Libya) since Ancient Egypt. Where did you get this R1b European nonsense from? There are absolutely no signs of mixture in the Igbo population, through ancestral DNA, through facial features and build, through to actual history and so on. Igbo land was actually the last place in Nigeria that was visited by non-Africans so when did this massive migration of Europeans happen and how comes non of us have heard of it? The Igbo are more similar to the 'pigmies' of the central region of Africa than they ever will be to any population outside (or even inside) of Africa. Igbo is genetically similar to the Mbundu populations of Congo. Until you can show me a study which says otherwise, your reply's won't do much in favor of your argument. |
European genetic ancestry is the most researched and diverse in study, therefore it is easily identified when analysing peoples ancestral lines. No one, absolutely no one come up with anything less than 99% African, the other 1% being an error. |
Okay, but in the case of the Igbo it is COMPLETELY absent, unless people have DNA studies that say otherwise. |
shymexx: Saying light-skinned West Africans aren't mixed is like saying Sicilians, Greeks, and Catalonians in Europe aren't mixed...No it is NOT, unless you have DNA evidence of this from all the testing that has gone on on the coast. Again, even the Wodaabe scored low on Berber DNA, Igbo people (both dark and light) have been tested and there hasn't been any case of ANY European ancestry. |
shymexx: If you can't provide archaeological evidence to support your assertion that Igbos are naturally light-skinned, then your assertion is flawed...What does that even mean? Aren't you supposed to be the one providing examples of such births made by Igbo women and British people? How can you be telling us about something no one has experienced or about ancestors that don't exist? Are the khoisan of the Botswana desert not considered ancient? Are they not also lighter skinned than most Africans? There's absolutely no DNA evidence, or historical evidence, that supports this claim that Igbo people are majorly mixed with ethnic Europeans. There's DNA and historical evidence that African women under slave masters were raped. Do you think Igbo people are unlike any other West African group and do not have a list of their lineage, or are you suggesting there's a massive cover-up? Even in areas where many Africans mixed with Europeans like Cape Verde you have obvious evidence of the fact. You can't even look at an Igbo persons facial features and tell me they are similar looking to most Afro-European people, because Igbo simple aren't mixed. There's no universal law that says African, or certain African, groups can't have members with lighter skin. Darker skin is a result of Melanin which can come in different levels depending on genes and the regions where you ancestors lived. The whole idea of this mixed theory is nonsense and should this thread should be discarded immediately. |
I don't know where from which body parts most of you are pulling out information from. If Igbo women would riot because of taxing, how are they going to lye stiff on the bead for onye Bekee and then bear the rape-child 9 months later with no protest? Amd where in Igboland is there any such instance of people having Europeans lineages? Surely if 10% of Igbo people are light and you guys are saying because of British molestation then why are these Igbo men and women not claiming their British great and great-great grandfathers, or do they not know their family again? Presuming that every light-skinned Igbo is a product of the British how do we then explain two dark Igbo parents giving birth to anyara-like featured babies? Or maybe these mothers are funking invisible oyiboe?? What about two light ones making a dark one? Maybe invisible Sudanese molestation? Give it up. People have already had DNA tests and had absolutely no European whatsoever. I don't know why people believe more than half of the world can have a skin tone lighter, except diverse Africans. |
Callotti: Does not look healthy kpa-kpa.You sound jealous and bitter. This will not make the rotten place you came from any more Enugu-ish. |
Dede1: To address you as a fool is an insult to dullards. My grandfather told me to forgive the person whom I had tough fight but the person who stood on the sideline while instructing my opponent to have stronghold on me through the loopholes. I guess fools tend to cherish the same delight. It explains the reason why anybody would regard NPN as a regional political party.Biko, Dede1 allow him. He's just trying to be "Pan-African", the same "Pan-African" thought that couldn't save the Tutsi, the Nuba, the Berom, Eastern Congo, and so on. . . . |

by the way from which African language did this name originate?) or Zulu's ruling Tunisia, I don't care for this talk.
