I can't remember reading about billionaire "prophets" in the bible.

I believe the point is that the 'eze' and chiefs living below okigwe are a recent invention and the hats symbolism as 'struggle' is also new. Why I'm trying to clarify this is because people can get harassed in Anambra particularly for wearing these hats without an Nze or Ozo position, but the reverse is not the same. It's the same for people outside the Cross River wearing okpu agu or any other of the conical hats as well as the ukara.

That's one of the words that exist and has to be researched since there was ingenuous embroidery, at least in the early 20th century.
CultureRe: Any National Animals In Nigeria. by ezeagu(m): 12:24am On Jul 30, 2012
warlei: Nice ,are there still wild animals nigeria? Can you name them,nd which part they can be found
There are wild primates in the Cross River National Park in south eastern Nigeria, including the Cross River gorilla which is native to the area. There are also wild monkeys all over the south, a few crocodiles and tortoises in places like Agulu lake in Anambra State, and hippos in the rest of the Niger Delta. I don't know if they are still around (outsied of zoos and sanctuaries) but there were leopards native to the forest region in the south. Of course there are also zoos.

Otheres should help me with the name of the fan and shirt, I'm not sure if that's ishiagu.

But the other items of clothing are the ukara wrapper, the okpu agu hat, and some corals. This man is definitely from Abia State, if not then Ebonyi.

ChinenyeN: Alright. I see the post now.
You said the otogbo developed into the attire worn by Glover and Whitaker?
I think, I'm not sure. The ones they were wearing may just be Western formal shirts. The otogbo has arms as well.

ChinenyeN: Just got word back that my people do (or did) something similar with guns, specifically dane guns. Dane guns were later on replaced with ntulala (canons). It is said that one of the reasons we used dane guns (and later, canons) was to signal beyond the local village community to the rest of the nnadi (since the ikoro drum lacked that extended range). The dane guns are said to have had no bullets. They would be fired blank. The same with the canons I believe.

The practice has become uncommon, it seems. People have now mostly reverted back to ikoro for signaling (or at the very last, ikoro has once again become what people primarily associate with community signaling).
In Umuahia ekpe and in other events they use nkpo na ala/ntulala.

This hat comes from the Cross River region of West Africa. It is called okpu agu in Igbo. The hat is used in mens leopard societies, the patterns are abstract depictions of the leopards spots, its claws, and other powerful leopard-related imagery.

Excuse me digging a thread from its grave, but I came to announce that the map I made months ago is being used by the World Igbo Congress, the one recently admitted into the UN ECOSOC.

Really don't realise how much impact you can have with a post online.

I didn't even know this thread showed up since it banned me from positing while I was editing it.

Antivirus92: do you know that in the olden days prior to the coming of the europeans that cloth doesn't exist in africa. In those days people were wearing animal skin. On introd uction of cloth, different people chose a way of dressing that they feel have a relationship with their culture. Again igbo is not a collection of different people as u claim, igbo is a tribe.the igbos in the boundaries do mix their traditional language, culture and dressing with their non-igbo groups ,so don't say that there is nothing like igbo tradition. If u want to witness the true igbo tradition please come to the igbo areas that are sorrounded by fellow igbo communities and not using ur community in the boundary to judge the entire igbo tribe. I have been saying it all the time that the problem we have in igboland today are the igbos who share boarders with non-igbos,those people always use the influence of non-igbos around them to judge others.they will readily divide the igbo nation and always see themselves as different from some other igbo people far away from them. There is igbo tradition, custom, tradition!,yes they exist.
I've seen this myth of Africans not having textiles before Europeans in Nollywood. The oldest woven material was found in Igbo-Ukwu dating from 300 to 1000 AD. Check the other thread on this section for Igbo clothing.

Also a tribe is more a close knot family, one that can trace blood lines, most Igbo villages are more like tribes than the whole Igbo.

Onitsha does not share borders with any other non-Igbo group, but they told the first Europeans they were from Benin, but this isn't what this thread is about.
CultureRe: Igbo Traditional Gun Salutes/salutations/distress Signals by ezeagu(op):
I thought nkpo na ala was different from the gun salutes, as in the nkpo na ala are like land mines, or are the names just the same? I specifically remember hearing about guns, but maybe they're interchangeable. I already know about nkpo na ala.

odumchi: I'm aware that communities have ndi oye iwu (town heralds) who go about and announce news with their ogele.

I also know that some communities use drums as a means of sending messages but I'm not aware of the use of firearms in the same manner.

I'll inquire about this. Anyway, Ezeagu, could you tell us the communities that use guns in such a manner?
All over, but I don't know about Anioma.

The Igbo also wore long gowns like in many west African cultures, in the Onicha language, and among other Igbo language, the gowns are know as otogbo.

You can see it faintly in this early picture of a titled man or patriarch:

It's used in addition of ikoro I think. But we have to remember guns have been in certain parts of Igbo lands for at least 150 years.
CultureRe: Igbo Attire And Its Meaning by ezeagu(m):
The red cap is from Nri ('the land of the ideal manifestation') and was given to the Ozo (meaning 'saviours') and Nze (apprentice Ozo) who were 'peace warriors' that went on spiritual missions (ifu ije or gbata ọsọ) across Igboland. The red symbolises fire and fire Agbala, which is the 'holy spirit'. The red cap signifies that the Ozo and Nze are agents of Agbala. The ozo sects also acts as a 'parliament' from which the Eze Nri is selected.

The red cap is sacred in Anambra and not just anyone can wear it on the road. Of course, in many other parts of Igboland it's devalued and is just a representation of a 'king' or 'chief'

I don't know how many of you know, but many Igbo communities have a uniform code of gun signals going by the amount of times a gun is repeatedly fired. All I know is that 6 or 7 rounds fired is supposed to be a call for the rest of the community to gather at the compound (whether for a bad reason like death, or a good reason like a birth). Does anyone know anymore about this?

CultureRe: What's The Origin That Word "PAPA" As We Use To Address Our Fathers? by ezeagu(m): 4:44pm On Jul 25, 2012
Yeah, papa is from Latin via French, mama is almost universal, many languages have the syllable 'ma' in their word for mother.
CultureRe: What's The Origin That Word "PAPA" As We Use To Address Our Fathers? by ezeagu(m): 3:25pm On Jul 25, 2012
"Papa" from French 'dad', "mama" from English, imitation of baby talk.

Igbo also has mpa for dad, and mma for mother. Mpa mpa for grandfather, mma mma for grandmother.
