Religion / Re: Atheists Stories Of Religious Discrimination And Atheophobia (a Library ) by ezme(m): 6:24pm On Jun 16, 2013
striktlymi:

No it does not! And yes, it would mean that everyone, including all who told one story or the other in this thread, is guilty of discrimination in one way or the other.

Yes, we all are guilty one way or the other of this as we carry out our daily activities, no matter how subliminal it may be.(example: Choosing to sit next to the tall pretty lady over the fat ugly dude at the far end when you get on a Public bus)
Religion / Re: Atheists Stories Of Religious Discrimination And Atheophobia (a Library ) by ezme(m): 5:48pm On Jun 16, 2013
striktlymi:

If we want to categorize that as discrimination and prejudice it would mean that everyone is guilty of same like I said before.

If for instance the lady in question is in a position to offer you a job and she rejects you based on religion despite being the most qualified candidate then I would say you have every cause to cry foul play.

The rejection, being solely on the ground of my religious inclination still falls short of your dictionary definition of discrimination?
Religion / Re: Atheists Stories Of Religious Discrimination And Atheophobia (a Library ) by ezme(m): 5:05pm On Jun 16, 2013
striktlymi:

The above is rather common...I have been rejected by a lady because I am not from Anambra. She said her dad will NEVER give his blessings because she is the Ada of the family.

Nah...I am not playing this down because it has to do with religion. I am a catholic and I know first hand the level of rejection we face when other Christians are concerned.

I have experienced a lady who said that she will NEVER marry if Catholic guys are the only men on the planet. I don't hold this against her because it is one of her criteria just like I can NEVER marry a lady that is an "O yes member"...

Is this not a form of discrimination? Is this not an unfair treatment of a person or group on the basis of prejudice?

Will I be wrong to say I was discriminated against on the basis of a prejudiced view of religion?
Religion / Re: Atheists Stories Of Religious Discrimination And Atheophobia (a Library ) by ezme(m): 4:48pm On Jun 16, 2013
striktlymi: @ezme: Everyone has a list of what he or she wants in a life partner. If someone rejects you because she does not see some qualities in you, then it is my opinion that the person has every right to say NO!!!

I am pretty sure you can as well reject some ladies because they did not meet your 'standards'. If everyone who does this is accused of being discriminatory then it seems everyone on Earth is guilty of same.

@Affiliated: Some of your posts were borne out of serious butthurt and ignorance.

davidylan:

Sorry but ezme's comments are better placed in the romance section. The joke is NOT that it happened but that he considers it a serious example of religious discrimination.

The fact you don't even see a problem with the examples just puts in perspective how the Christian mind works. I feel your response is borne out of your need to be part of the opposition.

@striktlymi I agree she has every right to dictate earmarks she wants in a future partner, but some of these have no merit when critically analyzed.I once met a girl whose requirement was that the future spouse must be from Anambra( not just Ibo). Now tell this to the Imo or Abia or Enugu guy who is "head over heels" with her and watch him take it gleefully.

Also Striktlymi I believe you are playing this one down as it borders on religion (which is an attribute we can choose).Lets interchange this abstraction with race(an attribute we have no control over) and tell me if you would be comfortable with your above disposition

Education / Re: University Of Benin Students Shot This Afternoon by ezme(m): 10:21am On Jun 15, 2013
iyobs7:

Thank u for this post. I graduated last year frm uniben after spending 6 yearz and a Year 5 student of my dept was killed by one DPO in benin and was buried by the police without the consent of his parents. Uniben PRO came out in national tv and completely denied the deceased as a uniben student. It amazes me when jambites fill their forms and are in a hurry to put in uniben for 1st choice, uniben shudnt even be in the first 20 best schools in Nigeria. I studied Science Lab Tech Microbiology option and yet for the 6yearz I spent, I neva saw or used a microscope, I cultured microorganism in my head... Is that education? I wud have said uniben standardx has fallen tremedously bt I dont think they ever had any standard

I agree on the falling standard, but why was it convenient for you not to mention that your program isn't a regular one. Is your department having NUC accreditation? Are you even eligible to go for National youth service with that course of study? You are talking about UME candidates, did you even get into that program through UME? When you choose to be part of a program you can tell from the onset was only put in place to make money for the school, you don't have to come here and whine.

Sometimes one never really get to know all the opportunities/thing and relationships you miss out on based on your religious stance or affiliation. There is a very large intolerant and elite Christian population out there. Sadly, Religion and the nature of God are one of the few things that we may disagree on. We probably would agree on so many other aspects and outlook on life.

My first case of discrimination was when a friend stopped talking to me and deleted me from Facebook saying she cannot be friends with people who think like I do.

My second case (which actually is the most painful for now) was a girl from National service year, who I had dreams of a future with. Young, intelligent, ambitious and pretty too. Our relationship was not going to work out and I had actually moved on.I really did not press on for a reason it wasn't going to work (maybe my arrogance got in the way). I had believed she chose someone better by her standards(more caring, pays more attention to details and probably richer) and I wasn't ready to lose sleep over it. We stayed friends on social networks( I'm still friends with all my ex'es). So recently she did a blog on how "God keeps his words". I expected to read a testimony so I went ahead to read. It was while reading this blog I found out the reason I didn't make "substantive boyfriend". The sad part was that she made it look like a divine revelation not to choose me. She picked up a bible verse from a "basket of bible blessings" during some Church service. It actually wasn't the " do not be unequally yoked" verse but some verse talking about the wisdom of God. She went ahead to say that the she needed that verse at the time as she was struggling with making a decision to date a guy(me) who was an unbeliever (Sadly, I haven't embraced free-thinking then, I just wasn't going to church regularly). She said she needed a nudge in the right direction and picking that bible verse from that basket of blessings was it.

Reading about the "unbeliever tag" and how that was the determining factor if she was going to date me really broke my heart. This wasn't a situation that I wasn't good enough for her, I just wasn't "christian" enough for her. I believe she chose that tag as I started being open and vocal about my disbelief in organised religion on Facebook a few months after she made her decision. Knowing this now makes we wonder how many people would have silently passed judgement on me. Does religion really define morality? All the wife beaters we read about, are they all unbelievers? The fact my emotions were involved in this case made the rejection really get to me.

Career / Re: Do You Believe In Luck? by ezme(m): 2:33pm On Jun 10, 2013
I would choose not to build a belief system around luck but would like to say that our choices in life are a half-chance, so is everybody else's. Opportunity tends to favour the prepared man. Take the driving seat of your life, seek rational wise counsel and base your decisions on sound judgment knowing that with the uncertainties that characterize this world we leave in, there are no guaranties for the future but just precautionary measures that gives a better odd at success.

Acidosis: This girl is a Sierra Leonean, a chronic drunkard, & an unbeliever but recently she had a very terrible dream... God showed her a revelation of HELL...omg!

If you listened to her you cannot escape tears! She saw her own caring mother.

According to her, the woman was a 'good woman', caring, hard-working and every other thing you can think of BUT the entire family before she died never believed in JESUS let alone accept him as their Lord and personal saviour.

I don't even know how to describe all she said ( just few hours ago) cos the tears & agony was too much for her to bear... This girl couldn't recognise her mother .. If not for the voice she heard, and her look according to her is something you'll never wish for your worst enemy..

She said her mother was crying bitterly in pains and regrets. omg cry cry cry

I beg all of una, HELL is soooo REAL.
and the worst is our world today is full of sin.. everything around us is sin..

Lord I need your mercy.....

and as for these Pastors who always ignore the teachings of Hell & Heaven out of fear of loosing Money and people to occupy your plastic chairs, may God close down your churches & run you down until you repent & change your ways (Amen!)

The world must know the TRUTH.

I guess you take the Village drunkard in your hometown seriously too when he tells tales.

What I read is that 24 people got jobs without passing aptitude tests and going for interviews. Please you shouldn't confuse this for a referral because it is not. When we encourage unfairness and celebrate things like this because we happen to be of same faith is plain hypocrisy. What about the unemployed Muslims and Pagans that missed out on this? Nigeria would be great when we start speaking the truth no matter who is on the receiving end. God didn't give them this jobs, the Nigerian factor did.

I don't know about you but my life is my story in which I'm the protagonist. Oh there actually could be people trying to undermine your moves maybe to get ahead. The thing is that those wishing you harm cannot do this using magic.

No I don't feel the need to attribute anything to a supreme being so such thoughts don't even occur to me. When something surprising happens, I thank those responsible either directly or indirectly by learning and appreciating whatever it is.

What was the last thing you thanked someone for?

For sure, when it is your life story you are the protagonist. A documentary of the history of Nigeria will not have your character as the protagonist.

The last thing I thanked someone for was a barbecue catfish and a cold bottle of Heineken. grin grin grin

You forget say bacteria and viruses were created by Satan.. God shall lock him up along with his followers on the last day.

The bible creation story is silent on the creation of bacteria and virus. Its just modern biology that groups these micro organisms into plant and animal kingdoms. I believe the writers of the bible did not understand fully the cell level of organisation at that point in time.

Lol. Am I the only one that noticed this?

Oh I DO. I desire to live the best life, and there are times I face disappointing experiences along with good fortune. I celebrate during the good times, and reassess myself during bad times. In all though, I do not believe any of these events are influenced by any spiritual being.

Oh, yes I do. And I believe that is out of habit rather than any inclination that a Good God is responsible for the fortune. I still catch myself screaming 'Baba GOd' when I score a sublime goal on the playstation grin.. it's quite similar to screaming 'Jesus' or 'oh my GOd' when there's danger.. These are habits from my former religious life that I've come to realize may die hard.

The bolded is part of the reason I started this thread. I still find myself saying a prayer before I eat most times.

I do not hate religion or people who practice it. I just hate the negative impact it has when selfish and unreasonable persons use it for purely personal/political ends and pretend there is some divine purpose or some holy benefit to be derived thereof. The Devil is inside us as well as God.. it is the very basis of our human nature - nothing more

Is your Atheism your personal form of protest against how backwards religion has brought our country, Nigeria?

Religion / Dear Atheist, Do You Feel The Need To Be Thankful? by ezme(m): 7:34pm On Jun 01, 2013
Dear Atheist,

Judging from your religious stance, I know that you do not have the psyche of the Believer and therefore would not attribute the outcome of your choices in life to a third party. You know above all things that a sound judgment is the best guide to living your life. You understand the erratic nature of life and therefore make projections accommodating all the "Maybe's" that comes with walking this earth.

You understand that life is a not a story, and you are not automatically the protagonist/hero.You know that there are no dark forces(village people/family/enemies/demons)trying to undermine your every move. You know that you won't get help from a third party supreme being by practicing a religion. In whatever you do, you do not congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either as you know your choices are a half chance and so are everybody else's,irrespective of what they believe.

But, do you ever feel the need to be thankful after a run of positive events in your life. The need to attribute these blessings to the handiwork of a supreme being. Do such thoughts blindside you while in traffic when making the return trip from a work day outing?

P.S: I really want to know your thoughts especially those atheist who were formerly Christians or Muslims.

I'm just curious, and this is for transparency sake. We took back exam slips after writing the test. Are we not supposed to be able to check and verify our results independently as this seemed to be the purpose of us being in possession of the examination slip?

I think this would have been a better approach where people know their scores and can make postulations as regards their fate. This "Nicodemus" calling doesn't look so straight- forward.

P.S: This post is in no way trying to take anything away from those that have been called so far. It is just an opinion.
